| How to Be Shameless: Squashing Your Inner Critic, with Maggie Langrick | 31 juil. 2024 | 00:30:49 | |
“It was easy for me to say to people ‘your stories are valuable’ but when I would turn that lens on myself, I was tongue-tied and embarrassed.” As the founder of Wonderwell Press, a non-fiction publishing company, Maggie Langrick has been a champion of writers for years; in fact she was a huge influence in the development of Keri and Kelly’s upcoming book, Whatever the Hell You Want (coming in October!). But while Maggie was helping everyone else find their voice, she was actively repressing her own, because, as she tells us, she felt like it was “weird…in the wrong way”. So when a cancer diagnosis derailed her ambitious business plans, Maggie was forced to finally slow down. And that’s when she realized that she actually had a lot to say, if she would only stop discarding her ideas before she’d even explored them. Today, Maggie is a writer, a podcast host, and a writing coach who helps people dig into their own creativity and discover the incredible power of losing the shame and telling their own stories. In this episode Maggie tells how she confronted her self-judgement and learned to listen to her own voice. She also shares what a “full-body ick” is really telling you. About Maggie Langrick In her teens and early twenties, Maggie was an award-winning film and television actress, starring in films such as My American Cousin and Harry and the Hendersons. May is Mental Health Awareness month, and in this episode we're thrilled to shine a light on Sonia Kahlon and Kathleen Killen who host the fantastic podcast Sisters in Sobriety. We’re also talking about Everblume, an entirely unique alcohol recovery support community founded by Sonia. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. “I was functioning at such a high level. I'm not going to refer to myself as an alcoholic. There's a stigma to that word”. Sonia Kahlon is a recovery coach and former addict who’d always known that "alcoholic" is a label that can sometimes stop people from getting help. But it wasn't until her marriage suddenly ended, and her recovery was put to the test, that she decided to build an alternative approach to recovery. Sonia was looking for consistency, and a place that embraced moderation, as well as total abstinence as legitimate goals. So she founded Everblume, an online support community that meets women wherever they are on their sobriety journey. Sonia is also one half of the fantastic podcast, Sisters in Sobriety, which she hosts with her ex-sister-in-law, psychotherapist Kathleen Killen. Kathleen has also struggled with substance abuse, so when Sonia asked her to co-host the show it seemed like a great way to share some tools for change. This episode is a quadruple threat of co-hosts on co-hosts, with these fun, amazing women who never stop teasing each other, even while they're dropping powerful insights on recovery. | How to Speak Up: Assertiveness, Boundaries, and the Beauty of Anger, with Cara Tuttle | 24 avr. 2024 | 00:31:11
“Anger is telling us something. It's often telling us that something isn't right or that a boundary is being violated”. Cara Tuttle is a lawyer, consultant, and educator focused on addressing sexual assault and harassment in higher education, and she wants us to explore our anger as a key tool in assertiveness training. After years of working on a university campus, Cara found that assertiveness was a major struggle for women of all ages, and that has a lot to do with how women have been raised, and how complicated anger can be for women in particular. As Cara explains, “a lot of the women [I work with] have been raised to be well behaved. They've been raised to be pleasant, which delays them in asserting their boundaries.” In this episode, Cara talks about her important book Drowning In Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living, that she wrote to address the questions she heard from women over and over about how to speak up for themselves. Plus, we do a deep dive into anger, assertiveness and boundaries, to explore why anger is a good thing and why it’s so complicated for women; the small things you can do to create big change; and we even talk about the life-changing power of quality sexual education. About Cara Tuttle Cara Tuttle is a speaker, author, consultant, and activist-minded educator with over twenty years' experience working in higher education. Cara is the author of Drowning in Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living and has contributed chapters to various books and publications, including The Future Female Leader: Preparing Girls and Women to Lead the World, The Female Code: A Woman's Book for Empowerment and Confidence, The Professional Woman: Pivoting to the New Normal, and Raising Daughters:Raising Healthy Children in an Unhealthy World. | Lifescaping: How to Dig Yourself Out of Entrepreneurial Trauma, with Monique Allen | 10 avr. 2024 | 00:30:47
“One of the jokes I have in coaching is, the surefire way to kill passion is to build a business around it, or marry it”. Monique Allen will tell you that entrepreneurship is it’s own special kind of trauma, and it needs a special kind of business coaching. Monique is a professional gardener who has spent almost four decades in the industry. Over that time, running her own landscaping business she began to see a crucial need amongst her fellow creatives and trade-based entrepreneurs: they had started a business because they loved their work, and then suddenly they became managers and stopped actually doing that work that they loved. So she developed a fascinating coaching method that focuses on the unique struggles of trade-based entrepreneurs. “Nature is a system”, Monique tells us. “It's the living and non-living things in connection with each other, with the overlay of energy and human interaction. This isn't all that much different than how businesses are formed”. In this episode, Monique shares the story behind “Lifescaping”, her coaching method inspired by the elements of all healthy ecosystems. Lifescaping helps business owners push beyond their barriers and thrive as entrepreneurs. About Monique Allen Monique founded The Garden Continuum - a regenerative landscape design/build and fine gardening firm celebrating its 25th year in business. She is the creator of the Life-Scape Method for land development. As the Lifescape Coach, she's interpreted this simple method into a system to teach service-business entrepreneurs how to develop more satisfying ownership experiences. | Walking Away: How to Leave a Promising Career and Make Your Life Your Own (Camino stories part 2 of 2!), with Christine Job | 27 mars 2024 | 00:30:41
“I was expecting to feel a certain way about the accomplishments. But it wasn't fulfilling, and I couldn't understand why.” Christine Job was a talented law student and the first Black female president of her class. From an early age, her family had expected her to go into law, but despite her achievements she was terribly unsatisfied. Christine’s early professional life was a series of fits and starts. Big opportunities kept leading to dead ends until one day she had a nagging feeling that would not go away. A friend had told Christine about the Camino de Santiago, an intense 800 kilometre pilgrimage across northern Spain. Hundreds of thousands of people walk the Camino each year, all of them seeking clarity. To Christine, it sounded horrible, but feeling lost about what was next, something in her told her to head to Spain. This is our second of two episodes on The Breakout where we look at the transformative power of the Camino de Santiago. On this episode, Christine shares her Camino experience, her winding road to fulfillment and all the hard lessons along the way. One night, at the tail end of a vacation in Europe, Kelli Field suddenly hit a wall. “I just started crying and I just told my husband, I can't do it anymore”. After decades of working in a high earning, high stress career that took a huge toll on her health, she realized she couldn’t go back to work. Something deep inside her had finally said no. “My life had all the trappings of the American dream. Big house, expensive cars, long commute. I did everything I thought I was supposed to do to be happy…but it was like a suit of clothing that no longer fit, and something had to give”. With no idea what to do next, Kelly followed a longtime goal to walk the Camino de Santiago, a grueling 800 kilometer pilgrimage across northern Spain. It was a walk that laid bare everything that needed to change, and kick-started an amazing journey of personal growth. On this episode, Kelly takes us through the profound experience of the Camino and the extraordinary choice she and her husband made once she returned. | Changing the Narrative: The Untold Her-story of Human Evolution, with Cat Bohannon, Bestselling Author of Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution | 28 févr. 2024 | 00:34:44
“There’s this really old, really crap story that how we got here is about what the guys did. And women were just like some side character behind a hill, just like pounding some tubers, saying, ‘Oh, sorry guys. I see you're busy. I'm just gonna build the future of our species in my actual body’.” That’s how the brilliant and hilarious Cat Bohannon introduces the idea behind her New York Times bestselling book, Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution. Ten years in the making, and making a huge splash internationally, the book is a fascinating, myth-busting tour of biological evolution that re-examines everything we think we know about the human body by placing women at the center of it all. In honor of International Women's Day on March 8th, we’re thrilled to talk with Cat about her boundary-breaking book, which puts the female body in the foreground of biological research. “ It's not that there's a sexist cabal saying, ha ha! We're gonna understudy females”, she tells us, “It's that there’s this pre-existing idea that ovaries don't matter”. Cat shares how there’s a long history of female bodies being excluded from medical, evolutionary and biological research, and why that matters for everyone. The interview also dives into Cat’s sci-fi movie inspiration for the book, how female figures in evolution were key to the humans of today, why the “male norm” in biological research developed in the first place, and how change in the scientific community is happening…slowly: “paradigm shifts are hard…that’s the hardest thing to break out of. A paradigm shift is the biggest thing there is”. Don’t miss this eye-opening discussion that looks at the human body from a whole different vantage point. | How to Escape Monogamy: The Valentine’s Day Episode! Featuring Psychologist, Sex Educator, and Best-Selling Author, Dr. Joli Hamilton | 14 févr. 2024 | 00:34:39
Get ready for a Valentine's Day episode like no other. True to form, we're challenging some expectations, and today, it's that age-old ideal of “the couple”. Why is it still so glorified, and what are some ways to do relationships differently? Psychologist and sex educator Dr. Joli Hamilton is one expert who wants to shake up the monogamy paradigm. In her practice, Joli helps people explore non-monogamy and the many ways it can be implemented in a relationship. Joli specializes in helping couples develop their own self-awareness, and navigate the bumpy road of non-monogamy – a choice that for lots of people can be overwhelming. But, she says it doesn’t have to be, “a lot of times we accidentally shame people for not following the script – for not just sticking with monogamy. If we actually had these conversations, we would have a different way of approaching this and it might not be so scary”. Joli also happens to be in a consensually non-monogamous relationship herself. But when she first began living non-monogamously, she made a lot of mistakes. She developed her own coaching and therapy practice to help couples avoid the difficulties she had. On this episode, Joli shares that messy monogamy breakout story, and gives us the 101 on non-monogamy, polyamory, and all the relationship concepts we need to know. She also explains how she takes couples through “the year of opening”: a year long process to help them navigate their open relationships in healthy and empowering ways. | Stuck In-Between: How to Defy Cultural Labels and Define Yourself (without all those rules), with Urmi Hossain | 31 janv. 2024 | 00:31:25
“I never felt I was Bengali enough. I never felt I was Italian enough…And because of that, I struggled to find my cultural identity”. Urmi Hossain is Italian by birth, and Bengali by blood, but there’s always been friction between those two identities. Born and raised in Italy to immigrant parents from Bangladesh, Urmi grew up at the center of a clash between Italian culture, strict Muslim parenting, and a society that wanted to categorize her one way or another. You know that tendency we all sometimes have where we want to define someone's cultural identity with one convenient, hyphenated label? Well, it's not always that simple. And on this episode, Urmi explains why it can also be a real problem. She tells us about her ongoing journey of breaking out of a single cultural box and how her writing and mentoring helps others do the same. Urmi talks about the push and pull of being raised in a country where cultural diversity is not the norm, and how it took her many years and a move to a new country to find her confidence, leadership skills, and self-awareness. In her book Discovering Your Identity: A rebirth from interracial struggle, Urmi explores the delicate balance of cultural self-discovery and her journey toward owning her own identity. Now she mentors young women of all cultures, in business and finance, helping them push their careers forward and embrace their power. | How To Save Your Kids: Kidnapping, Trauma, and Fighting the Odds...and Your Own Demons, with Author, Lizbeth Meredith | 17 janv. 2024 | 00:30:03
“Four years after I left – four long years of being stalked and having my tires slashed – my former husband took the kids one day and disappeared out of country.” That’s the beginning of Lizbeth Meredith’s years-long nightmare of searching for her two young daughters after her abusive ex-husband kidnapped them and took them to Greece. Living on just $10 an hour at the time, Lizbeth embarks on a $100,000 journey working with a private detective, fighting through a foreign court system, getting arrested, and taking terrifying risks to bring her children home. But this is a story that really begins with Lizbeth’s own difficult childhood. In this episode, Lizbeth shares the long road from her own early trauma to surviving domestic abuse, to rescuing her girls and growing a foundation of confidence and self-worth. She now works as a writer, true crime interviewer, probation worker, and child abuse investigator, and uses her voice and her experiences to advocate for victims everywhere. Lizbeth talks honestly about being “a good victim”, staying quiet in hopes that things would get better, and how her childhood contributed to decades of not believing in herself. She wrote about the whole harrowing journey of defying the odds and the expectations in her memoir, Pieces of Me, and in 2022, that book was made into a Lifetime movie, called Stolen by Their Father. In 2023, Lizbeth published her second book, Grounded In Grit, that she describes as “personal development for women weighed down by crises or abuse, finally ready to become their own best advocate”. You don’t want to miss this amazing story of transformation and survival. | How to Change the World, One Kid at a Time: From Medicine to Toys – Career Reinvention for a Better World, with Dr. Zee of InKidz | 06 déc. 2023 | 00:32:27
“I lived in Southern California, born and raised my whole life. And I was bullied for being different”. That’s how Dr. Zabina Bhasin, better known as “Dr. Zee”, experienced her childhood as a South Asian American growing up in California. Today she is a child psychiatrist who is deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of children. Her work is about building self-confidence and self-awareness in kids, and she’s been committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in the healthcare space since her career began. So when her own child came to her upset and confused about how she was treated as a South Asian American, she realized history was repeating itself, “It hit me: Oh my God! This is the exact same thing I went through”. The same ignorance Dr. Zee experienced as a kid was still happening today. Frustrated, dismayed, and sad all at once, Dr. Zee knew the only way to change things is through education. And that's when her life took an unexpected turn. She left her thriving career as a doctor to start InKidz, an educational toy company that aims to build belonging, self-worth, and acceptance from an early age. On this episode, we're digging into two breakouts: Dr. Zee's courageous decision to leave one passion to pursue another, and how she dealt with the friction she experienced in moving from a respected profession to create products that challenge the status quo. Dr. Zee’s second breakout is about her work in stopping the cycle of ignorance and building more acceptance in the world. Plus, with the holidays coming at us quick, you're going to get some amazing gift ideas for all the great kids in your life! “The beauty of adversity is it creates these amazing conditions for growth”. Jolie Wills is a cognitive scientist and a specialist in disaster relief who wants us to rethink how we deal with disasters. In 2011, Jolie lived through New Zealand's worst earthquake on record. As she helped her community through the aftermath that included 5 years of devastating aftershocks, she saw how disasters can make people re-assess their whole way of life. “You hit this point where you're having to innovate constantly, you're really tired, and suddenly the things that maybe were there hidden, but didn't really get in your way, really surface.” Jolie and her business partner, Elizabeth McNaughton realized a dire need for resources to help leaders, organizations and individuals manage adversity. They founded Hummingly, a company that creates tools and training for leadership skills, resilience and performance under pressure. Based on extensive research around disaster fatigue, prolonged stress, cognitive response to adversity, and leadership skills, Hummingly’s coaching and tools are accessible, game-based, and effective support for any community, organization, family or individual negotiating high-pressure times. On this episode, Jolie talks about post-traumatic growth, and the self-awareness and confidence that comes with adversity. She also explains how disasters blow everything wide open and expose the foundations of your whole way of life, and for some, inspire a complete rebuild from the ground up. | What You Think You Know: Inside an Abortion Clinic with Patrice D’Amato | 01 mars 2023 | 00:30:57
During her 40 years as a nurse, Patrice D’Amato has seen a lot of things, but it was her years spent providing abortion care that had the biggest impact on her. She’s never thought of herself as an activist, but as the polarizing debate about abortion raged on, Patrice realized that the real problem is our perception. So she decided to do something about that. This is the second installment of a three-episode run that will explore different aspects of motherhood on The Breakout. In this episode, Patrice tells us about the fascinating book she wrote to try and shift perspectives on abortion. Her book The View from the Clinic takes us inside the clinic to challenge what we think we know about the issue, show us who is actually getting abortions (spoiler: it's mostly women who are already mothers), and shine a light on what our beliefs about abortion are really built on. The Breakout is hosted by people and change experts, Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Keri and Kelly are founders of Abbracci Group, a results-driven coaching and consulting firm focused on getting the best out of people. Join them as they get advice and insights from change experts, and dive into the stories of people who have busted out of life’s stifling boxes and shifted their lives into bold new territory.

“This was a very big, well-constructed, covert military spy operation that we were on. I didn’t want anyone to talk about it”. That’s how Meirav Zur felt about her long, painful journey through fertility treatments. She’s an actor and writer who makes a living being open and vulnerable on stage, but for almost a decade, Meirav insisted that she and her husband keep this part of their lives top secret. Until one day, something shifted, and Meirav found a beautiful way to get past her silence. This episode kicks off a three-episode run that will explore different aspects of motherhood on The Breakout. In this first part of the series, we hear how the pressure of expectations around family planning kept Meirav from sharing her experiences with even her closest friends, and what made her finally let it all out. | Ep 75: Valerie Paris reCHARGED (rebroadcast) | 04 janv. 2023 | 00:41:03
You may have heard that we’re changing things up. It’s true: we’re retiring ReCHARGE Your Life and dropping a brand new show very soon! In the meantime, we’re looking back on one of our favorite episodes from 2021: a beautiful and important story from our guest, Valerie Paris. Summary: Ideas. Ideas. Ideas. Valerie Paris shares with us her favorite book on ideas. How they move through the universe, how they visit you and how they leave you. Profound words on the concept of ideas. And that is just the beginning of our conversation with Valerie. Valerie discusses her decision to transition two years ago. Her transition began when she asked herself the question: If you could live your life how you want to, and you could do anything, what would that look like? And she realized that she would be happier if she transitioned to a woman. She shares her story and, in particular, her fear that she would be fired when she told her company that she was going to transition. Throughout her story, Valerie illustrates her courage and how it manifested itself during her life. And, we talked about understanding our fear and how the world could change if we stop acting on fear. It is an incredibly personal story. And, we recorded it on International Transgender Day of Visibility (an amazing coincidence and we are thrilled the universe made that happen for us—beautiful!). Valerie Paris is a game designer with a background in marketing, community engagement, and immersive storytelling. Having worn many hats in her professional experience, from designing escape rooms to improving operations, she is passionate about creating experiences that help connect people in meaningful ways. Her latest games have focused on exploring themes of gender and LGBTQ+ issues, as well as building positive queer community in the often hostile world of games.

| Ep70: Stopher Cavins reCHARGED | 26 oct. 2022 | 00:40:43 | |
Stopher Cavins spent so much of his life in a “me bubble”. Situations that occurred during his childhood presented him with challenges which he dealt with by going into survival mode. Unfortunately, he would remain in that defensive survival mode for the next 30 plus years, which presented a real challenge to those trying to get close to him. Throughout his 20’s and 30’s, he didn’t seek answers from within. While he liked the idea of spirituality, he would never make time to connect spiritually. His time was spent protecting his “me bubble”. Ego was fully engaged, enabled, and empowered. For Stopher, this way of life was getting the job done. His fully empowered ego was protecting him from experiencing the pain and heartache that he experienced in his childhood. The flip side was that he was extremely unfulfilled and always disappointed with where he was in life. As he entered his 40’s, things changed for him. The universe was tired of hearing him complain about not having what he thought he deserved. He was launched into what he later realized was a spiritual awakening. The real Stopher finally stood up and took control. For Stopher, developing psychic and intuitive abilities was never a goal. In removing expectations and fears from his life, he opened up a whole new world for himself. Once his ego was checked, his higher self, along with his guides, and angels took over. Stopher’s calling is to help people heal. He wants people to get the clarity about their situations that he was never able to get and to bring a sense of clarity and confirmation to those about their path forward.
