Sigur Ros of course had success with Hoppípolla from their follow-up album Takk... being used in a series of adverts and TV montages. While JJ72 songs were never used in quite that way, Mark tells us a funny story about a clip of Oxygen appearing on Sky Sports!

This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Mark Greaney, formerly the frontman of JJ72.

The band burst out of Dublin at the start of 2000 and were playing big festival shows and supporting huge acts when they were only just turning 20. Mark reflects on that boom and how they capitalised on the buzz around the band.

But within two years Mark says the music scene had changed dramatically. Why? Because of The Libertines, he says. Mark discusses how the sudden shift from bands formed in the late 90s to ones formed in the early years of the 00s changed the landscape.

We discuss how JJ72's two albums were put together, including some of their biggest hits such as Oxygen, and Mark - who works at BIMM Institute Dublin and has taught the likes of Fontaines DC - reveals potential plans for the previously unreleased third album!

This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're joined by David Jordan and Jim Maddock from Air Traffic.

One of BBC's Sounds of 2007, Air Traffic were a band in demand and, despite being still in their teens, had record labels fighting for their signatures. They ended up on a major label with EMI - and tell us about the excessive spending they enjoyed as part of that deal.

Sticking with the financials, we also learn about how band members get paid as part of a deal like that. But it wasn't all roses, with the guys discussing the impact of a vicious review in the NME on both their mental health and their trajectory.

In a wide-ranging chat we also find out how the band strangely became really big in Belgium - and why they went out to buy their own personal pool cues during the recording of their album...

The band actually had to fight to get this released, with their record label refusing to put it out. That led to the band streaming it for free on their website before a different record company released it the following the year.

And it was a good job they fought for it too, with the album critically acclaimed and going on to be a big seller! James explains what makes the album special.

This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we catch up with Tom Greatorex from Black Wire.

The band burst onto the scene in Leeds and immediately became renowned for their wild live shows, with one of their early gigs inspiring the Kaiser Chiefs' I Predict A Riot. Tom recalls that night - and tries to work out how he ended up losing his trousers and being punched on stage by a bouncer!

The band spent a lot of time on the road with The Cribs and Tom chats about his respect for the Jarman brothers and other bands of the era who inspired them as we discuss how the 00s scene emerged.

The band split in 2007 but gave fans a lockdown treat in 2020 when they finally released their second album 13 years after it had been recorded, so we get the story behind that, too.

With those icons combining together, there are a lot of different influences at play and Matt explains how the sound of the band is hard to pin down - but very special nonetheless.
