Put on some Phil Collins to set the mood, and then settle in for this memorable look at "American Psycho." In this episode, recommended by dear friend of the program Derrick Brooke, Keith and Ev discuss all the complicated dynamism of Patrick Bateman as played by Christian Bale, Mary Harron's excellent direction, the endlessly dark quotability of the film, and Ev makes a stunning confession that will make you second guess ever thinking he might know what he's talking about. THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is a damn fine episode. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go return some video tapes.

THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 26 - "The Last of the Mohicans"10 Dec 202100:38:11

It's the first revision to The Bluff Council's Top Ten Favorite Films Lists! Ev sends "Up In the Air" out into the atmosphere, and inserts Michael Mann's 1992 historical epic "The Last of the Mohicans" into the #6 spot. In this episode, Ev raves about the soundtrack, the set design, the natural lighting, the ending, and the ROMANCE. Upon watching this film for the first time, Keith is... considerably less enamored. Keith is not impressed with the film. Ev is not impressed with Keith's opinion. Loads of unimpressiveness here, folks. You'll see. #TheLastoftheMohicans #DanielDayLewis

THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 24 - "The Little Things"08 Dec 202100:34:51

An all-time great crime thriller classic? Or a stinky dud that proves studio films should disappear forever? THAT'S IT THAT'S THE ONLY TWO THINGS IT CAN BE THE WORLD IS A STRICTLY BINARY WORLD OF ABSOLUTES. Just kidding! It's neither of those things. But it IS a movie, and it features three very interesting actors. In this episode, Keith and Ev tackle "The Little Things," a new film recently released on HBOMax. They talk about Rami Malek's "sneaky sexuality," they discuss "Leeto vs. Letto," and they debate the structure and the moral of the story, or perhaps, the lack of one.

The Wizard of Oz pt. 2 | It's the most important film ever made, but far from perfect | The Bluff Council Movie Review | Ep.111-227 Dec 202400:33:22

KEY TOPICS

- Keith's biggest complaint: The script
  • The character of Dorothy doesn't need to learn the primary lesson of the film

  • Toto is screwed

  • Why does water kill the witch, and why didn't we know that beforehand

  • Glinda the sociopath

  • The behind-the-scenes horrors: toxic makeup, hot lights, and poor Judy Garland 35:28 - The munchkin hanging

  • Margaret Hamilton as the Witch is great, timeless stuff

  • We don't love the Tin Man. Or the Lion. Or the Scarecrow...

  • Intentionally and unintentionally funny moments

  • The music, there's sure a lot of it

  • The production design and effects are amazing, and what makes movies special

1939's "The Wizard of Oz" is so iconic it has transcended being "just" a film. It is as much a part of our shared social fabric as just about anything else. It's perhaps the most viewed film of all time. How did that happen? How does it hold up today? Why was it so impactful? LET'S GET INTO IT.

KEY TOPICS

 - Intro / Is this the most important film of all time? 01:45 - Wait Keith has seen this movie before right
  • Dark Side of the Rainbow

  • Is it even possible to judge this movie on its merits with how iconic it has become?

  • Keith thinks its beloved because it has been passed down by generations

The Sandlot pt. 2 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 110-223 Dec 202400:27:59

KEY TOPICS

 - The "poorly aged" Wendy Peffercorn scene AKA ya'll hate true love
  • The poignant relatability of the ending

  • Ev's major criticism: Why do the moral and climax of the story not more directly include the primary protagonist of the film?

  • The movie definitely takes a hard right into Kid Town in that third act

  • The visual representation of the mythic Beast

  • Smalls hung out with these kids all summer and never learned who Babe Ruth was? Come on...

  • Keith has either a continuity issue or a directing issue with Benny's slide into home

  • Ev hates grownup Benny the Jet, the Dodgers, and maybe Keith

The Sandlot pt. 1 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 110-120 Dec 202400:20:01

For folks of a certain age, "The Sandlot" is about as good as kids movies get. The 1993 classic was a staple of endless rewatchability and quotability for an entire generation. But what makes it so great? Why was it so timeless? And what, gulp were the... flaws? Join the aged and overweight boys of The Bluff Council as they dive head first into the deep end, even though they can't swim, and fake their own death so the lifeguard has to come give them CPR, which sure gets a little sketchy, but hey they all got married after so LEAVE IT ALONE OK, IT WAS TRUE LOVE. Er... sorry. Join us as we discuss... "The Sandlot."

KEY TOPICS

 - Intro / Is this a Top 5 Kids Movie?
  • Ugh Ev is going to try to ruin this isn't he

  • The solid performances by this young cast and some of our favorite characters, including Squints, Ham, Benny, Yeah Yeah, and Smalls

  • This movie is filled with memorable lines and memorable sequences

  • Awesome use of music throughout

  • Setting the story in the 1960s gives the film a timeless appeal

  • This movie makes us love baseball and miss our childhoods

  • The beautiful 4th of July sequence

  • Keith loves the beginning of the film and all the groundwork it lays

Deadpool & Wolverine is amazing, BUT... pt. 2 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep.109-218 Dec 202400:31:37

KEY TOPICS

 - These is no story to be found here, very little makes sense, character motivations are... meh, the heroes can't die, etc.
  • This movie is fun, the story doesn't matter

  • OK but if the story doesn't matter NOW, Marvel/Disney is gonna just keep not trying to make it matter in the future

  • The big question: Does "Deadpool & Wolverine" save the MCU? Probably not, because it's not even really an MCU movie

  • There is clearly a market for adult-focused comic book films. Will they ever learn?

  • Robert Downey Jr. is Doctor Doom. Yay...?

  • Put Glen Powell in it

KEY TOPICS

 - The terrible audio mixing/mastering... did this film use AI to fill in actor's voices?
  • Wait so one guy yells "bar fight" and the bar erupts into a full blown riot?
- Fight scenes don't need CGI! Especially bad CGI
  • All the drama: This film's streaming release, Doug Liman's beef, and his open letter - Was it all just a marketing gimmick?

  • Are the streaming companies intentionally trying to kill the movie industry?

Road House pt. 1 | The remake is pretty awful | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 106-104 Dec 202400:19:23

The original "Road House," released in 1989 and starring Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott, was loud, dumb, and incredibly fun. This new "reimagining" of "Road House," released in 2024 and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, is loud and dumb. Two outta three ain't bad! Right? Right!? Let's talk about the script, the performances, the effects, and also maybe a few good things about this new Amazon product. Oh boy...

KEY TOPICS

 - Intro / TESTOSTERONE 00:48 - What Ev thought
  • What Keith thought

  • Jake Gyllenhaal is good!

  • This movie is all FUN and ENERGY and sometimes that's OK

  • Comparisons to the original "Road House"

  • This film would have been better experienced in a theater

  • Worst script ever? With examples

  • Conor McGregor's performance is... a choice, and Jessica Williams' performance is... bad

  • There is absolutely ZERO character development in this film

Was Greta Gerwig snubbed by the Oscars | The Bluff Council debates | Ep.10502 Dec 202400:17:53

"Barbie" may be the biggest film story of the year. 1.5 BILLION dollars raked in. Immeasurable cultural impact. So when the director of the film, Greta Gerwig, was not one of the five directors nominated for Best Director at the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards, the streets of the internet were filled with rage. Was Greta Gerwig snubbed? Or were there simply five directors that Academy voters found to be more deserving? Should a film's box office and cultural impact play a larger role in the voting for these nominations? At the end of our recent Oscars Predictions Spectacular episode, we argued about this very subject. Keith thinks Greta should be there. Ev thinks that the Academy got it right. It gets heated. What do YOU think?
