Episode 548: Are You an Expat or an Immigrant?
Saison 11 · Épisode 548
lundi 2 septembre 2024 • Durée 30:12
Tiffany moved to Italy as an expat in the fall of 2004—almost exactly two decades ago. Since then, she's married an Italian and started a family, bought a home in Italy, and become an Italian citizen, so... is it time to change that label from expat to immigrant?
In response to a listener email, Tiffany and Katy chat about why Tiffany can't seem to relinquish the label of expat, and how despite being a fully fledged Italian citizen, she still doesn't feel as Italian as the native-born.
On this episode from our archives, we also discuss whether the choice when using the expat and immigrant labels has anything to do with race or privilege.

Episode 547: Traveling the World by Book
Saison 11 · Épisode 547
lundi 26 août 2024 • Durée 26:48
Reading books can inspire you to travel, and travel can inspire you to read books. It's what we call a delicious cycle.
Today we talk about the books (and other types of art) that have inspired not only particular trips, but the things that we have sought out while on that trip, or even things we have made a point to see in our own cities.
But this inspiration goes both ways, and sometimes the things we see when traveling inspire us to read more about them, whether in fiction or non-fiction. Listen in to our conversation about travel-inspired reading and reading-inspired travel.

Bittersweet Moment #198: Discomfort Recollected in Tranquility
Saison 10 · Épisode 198
jeudi 16 mars 2023 • Durée 05:13
"An adventure is simply physical and emotional discomfort recollected in tranquility." —Tim Cahill
Do you agree? In this mini-episode, we share a snippet of a past interview with fellow podcaster and adventurer Scott Gurian. He talks about his habit of seeking adventure, being a planner who knows the best experiences are often unplanned, and how he has turned from reporting on others adventures to living them himself.
The full interview can be found here, and be sure to check out Scott's podcast Far From Home. We aired an episode of the Far From Home podcast on our show this week (and they aired one of ours on their show!).

Episode 471: A Stranger in a Strange Land
Saison 10 · Épisode 471
lundi 13 mars 2023 • Durée 30:58
Today we have the pleasure of hosting an episode of one of our favorite travel podcasts, Far From Home, hosted by Scott Gurian.
In this episode, Jamie Yuenger talks about the unexpected challenges of adjusting to life as a New Yorker living in the Netherlands. She describes the near impossibility of making friends with locals, the lost feeling of not knowing the "terms of engagement," and the surprise in finding that her Americanness is often perceived as "too much."
It wasn't until she went back to New York for a visit after three years that she was able to put her finger on why adjusting to life in a small Dutch city was such a challenge. She talks about the things she misses, things as simple as being able to walk into a bookstore and be able to read any book there, to as important as being able to fully express yourself to your partner.
This is an unmissable episode for any expat who's having a hard time, or anyone who is planning a move abroad.
Way back in our archives, you can find an interview with Scott Gurian, Episode 174 Rally, where he talks about an amazing adventure he went on, the Mongolian Rally.
You can also listen to more from Jamie on her own podcast, If You Knew Me.

Bittersweet Moment #197: Furbo vs. Fesso
Saison 10 · Épisode 197
jeudi 9 mars 2023 • Durée 11:23
They say that in Italy, you're either a furbo or a fesso—a wise guy or a chump. It's an unhappy reality that, in many situations in Italy, if you're not getting one over on someone else, someone is inevitably getting one over on you.
After Monday's debate over the possible unexpected benefits of Italian disorganization, Tiffany recalls a few times in her nearly two decades of living in Rome when she turned on the wily arts of furbizia to get her way, and to avoid being a fessa.
But that leads to a bigger question, does it have to be this way?

Episode 470: In Praise of Italian Disorganization
Saison 10 · Épisode 470
lundi 6 mars 2023 • Durée 27:40
Italians love to complain about how disorganized everything is in Italy, but deep down, do they actually like it? A chance conversation Tiffany had last week sparked this episode about the possible benefits of living a country that doesn't take rules and regulations quite so seriously. Is there something to be said for a place that's a bit more flexible and relaxed, where people are more apt to "live and let live"?

Episode 469: Can You Move to Italy without Speaking Italian?
Saison 10 · Épisode 469
lundi 27 février 2023 • Durée 27:17
Is it possible to move to Italy without speaking Italian? Can you find a job in Italy without speaking Italian? Can you make friends?
This week we tackle a listener email, a question from someone who is pining to move to Italy, but is worried that she won't be able to find work or fit in, since she barely speaks the language.
Tiffany and Katy spill on how much Italian you really need to know to get by, what you can do to improve it, and why it's so important to (eventually) speak the language of the country you live in.
If you have a question of your own, email us and we might just answer your question on air!
And if you want even more access, join us on Patreon, where we host regular live meet-ups with listeners and offer two exclusive bonus episodes every month!
