Speaker Salon Showcase with Dina Gregory16 Jun 202300:15:20

Today, I am sharing one of the amazing talks given live at my Speaker Salon Showcase — an event I curate annually in New York City.

This talk, “From the Felt to the Flesh: Lessons from Italy’s Legendary Christmas Witch,” was given by Dina Gregory.

By day, Dina teaches trauma-informed language instruction to children. By night, she is a writer, speaker, puppeteer, and host of the Le Befana’s Table podcast.

Whether in the classroom, under a table, or on a stage, Dina combines down to earth truth telling with humor and imagination. She inspires people of all ages to reclaim the sacred adventure of life.

As an Italian American, Dina has fond memories of sitting around the kitchen table sharing stories and singing songs. She felt called not only to preserve a legend from her cultural heritage but to bring forth a new story. This story shows the world that, in spite of our differences, life is sweeter together.

In her talk, she explores:

  • How a one-toothed puppet of Italy’s Christmas witch changed her life

  • What to do when world events make you feel powerless

  • Why every single one of us has a vital role to play

  • The impact storytelling has on our lives

Rehearsal vs. Run Through25 Apr 202300:17:41

This week, I’m breaking down the difference between a rehearsal and a run-through when you’re preparing to take the stage with your big talk.

At the time of recording this episode, I was preparing to speak at an event. And when I’m in the process of prepping my own big talk, I make time for both rehearsals and run-throughs.

Many people don’t understand the difference between these two phases in the preparation processes, and I want to clear that up today. Because not going through both of them is one of the biggest mistakes I see speakers make before they take big stages.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • What defines a rehearsal vs. a run-through

  • Why you have to move out of the rehearsal process into the run-through process

  • How to create your confidence-competence loop

  • My run-through of the talk I gave on International Women's Day

Ask Me Anything with Emma Cullen28 Mar 202300:44:41

This week, I am being interviewed by my dear friend, mentee, and social media manager, Emma Cullen, as I allow her to ask me anything.

We start our conversation in a very natural place for us — the topic of mentorship. I began mentoring Emma when she was 17 years old. She knew she wanted to be an actor — which she currently is — and her parents brought me in as her coach as she prepared for college auditions.

When we started our mentorship, we met weekly in NYC, and the rest is history! I know you’ll love the questions Emma brings to the table today.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What it means to mentor someone and what it means to be mentored

How to say no14 Mar 202300:12:19

This episode was inspired by a question my dear friend, mentee, and social media manager, Emma Cullen, recently asked. She said, “You often say no to things in order to free up more time for your clients, your family, your community, and your friends. But how do you say no?”

I loved this question, and I am excited to share my answer with you today! Because when it comes to responding to a request, “no” is a complete sentence. And I am not only talking about when you apply to speak.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • Why, as a visionary, speaker, and leader, you have to get really comfortable with saying no

  • The baggage many people have with saying no

  • Examples of how to say no to the things you’re being asked to do

  • How to show gratitude when saying no to someone

How to Give a Wedding Toast14 Feb 202300:14:19

In today’s episode, I share about a kind of big talk many people, speaker or not, are asked to do at some point in their lives. And that is a wedding toast.

When someone asks you to give a toast at their wedding, it can feel natural to move into a place of fear. After all, you don’t want to mess up someone’s big day. However, just like any talk, you have to remember that it's not about you.

And when you reframe your thoughts in this way, giving that wedding toast, or any talk, becomes much easier.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • The first thing you should think about when someone asks you to give a toast at their wedding
  • How to alleviate your worry and concern (and the couple’s) about the toast you’re going to give
  • Where to begin in writing your wedding toast and how long it should be
  • The things you should never do during your toast

The Art of Responding - How to Manage Rejection17 Jan 202300:14:02

I’m so excited for today’s episode because I am talking about an important part of any thought leader’s journey. And that is how to navigate a rejection.

Every speaker eventually has the experience of not being chosen to take a stage. This is normal. And the art of responding to this rejection can be learned.

Recently, I addressed this with the members of The Big Talk Academy. The news of who would be taking the stage for our Virtual Showcase was met with a range of responses. And today’s conversation is a part of the coaching call where we discussed these responses.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • Why no one can take your voice from you
  • What goes into a producing a show and why certain speakers are chosen
  • The reason you don’t get feedback from your applications
  • How to respond to organizers and event producers when you are not chosen for a stage and why this matters

Dr. Benedek began his career as a professor at McMaster University in Canada before leaving academia to tackle water pollution. He did this by founding Zenon, which became the global leader in technology for recycling water.

After Zenon was acquired by GE in 2006, Dr. Benedek worked briefly at the Scripps Institute of Technology in San Diego, California, where he became interested in finding solutions to climate change. To further his newfound mission, he founded Anaergia in 2007. Anaergia has since become a world leader in recovery solutions for a cleaner, greener planet.

I previously had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Benedek for an article in Brainz Magazine, and I know you are going to learn so much from him today.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • Dr. Benedek’s powerful backstory and his beginnings of facing challenges head on
  • The impact he is making in the world through his work on climate change
  • Where we can look for hope that our efforts to create change will work
  • How we can all make a difference in our world

How To Moderate a Panel20 Dec 202200:15:45

In the past, I’ve shared what it means to be on a panel and the benefits of doing this as a thought leader and speaker.

Being a panelist is a great way to get your toes wet! You don't have to memorize anything. You don't have to come prepared. You just come and allow the moderator to take care of you.

And today, I want to talk about what it means to be a moderator and how this can also be an important part of your journey as a speaker.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • My experience moderating a panel at the Chelsea film festival here in NYC
  • The importance of getting to know your speakers before you moderate a panel
  • An easy way to make your speakers feel safe and connected to you
  • How to steer the conversation while also elevating the panelists

I’m so excited for today’s episode because it’s a part of a new series that gives you an inside look at the hot seat coaching that happens during our masterclass, The Art of The Big Talk.

I shared the first episode a couple of weeks ago and have loved hearing your responses to it! My hope is that these questions will serve to inspire you and give you some of the insights you’re seeking as you too work towards taking the stages you desire.

In these hot seats, we’ll explore:

  • Dispelling myths with your talk
  • Working through the precise words you use in your talk title
  • Turning the personal story you know you need to share into a signature talk
  • Giving birth to something bigger than yourself

How to Write a Book in a Weekend06 Dec 202200:20:38

Recently, I decided to co-author a book about menopause. Although I wrote The Influential Voice myself, I chose to co-author this new book because I wanted to bring in a colleague and friend of mine, Dr. Alexandra Stockwell, who I deeply respect.

I don’t have children, and I’m not a medical doctor. However, Dr Stockwell does and is. And I wanted to have both of these points of view when it came to talking about menopause.

The reason I decided to talk about this today is because we intentionally decided to write this book together in a single weekend. A few months ago, I had no idea that this was possible. And I’m hoping by sharing this experience that you’ll also feel inspired to reexamine what you believe is possible, too.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • The reason I felt strongly about writing a book about menopause and who it is for
  • Why Dr. Stockwell and I decided to write a book in a weekend
  • What that weekend looked like for us and how we prepared for it
  • Why anything is possible when you make the decision to do what you desire
