S6Ep30: Caring for Kids from Hard Places27 Aug 202400:32:06

This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey interview author Jayne Schooler about her new book; Caring for Kids from Hard Places.

Why doesn’t he act his age? Why does she behave so impulsively? Why does he have meltdowns so often?

There is always meaning behind behavior in all of us. It might be a behavioral reaction from something as simple as hunger or exhaustion. Or something far more serious – a triggered reaction to a traumatic, frightening experience.

Children who have experienced early childhood neglect or trauma are often greatly impacted in developmental ways. Children in foster care or who are given up for adoption often deal with these kinds of negative early experiences and it can be difficult to know how to help. People who teach–either in school or children’s ministry often see these youngsters’ behavior as confusing and don’t understand why.

In Caring for Kids from Hard Places, Jayne and David Schooler discuss the reasons behind why children and teens sometimes exhibit potentially disruptive behavior. Together, they offer practical strategies on training, equipping and resourcing staff and volunteers to provide a responsive environment for children with behavioral challenges. Caring for Kids from Hard Places includes:

  • Insights on how to understand adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
  • Principles for creating a trauma-informed environment
  • Strategies for facilitating healing
  • Tips on how to create a sensory-smart classroom

Discover how to better love children from difficult backgrounds and pave their way for a better life.

S4Ep30: Yancy - Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship01 Aug 202200:38:55

This week Mike and Sarah talk with singer-songwriter and now author Yancy, about unlocking the power of discipling kids in worship in her new book, Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship.

STOP just doing songs and START leading worship by making disciples who know what it means to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth.

No matter our age, each one of us was designed to praise, and for our praise to shift the atmosphere and usher in freedom and deliverance. Our worship is a sacrifice unto the Lord-this includes the praises of children. It's powerful. It's beautiful. It's sweet. Can you imagine children singing out, with their whole hearts, praises to their King? It's quite possibly the sweetest sound you will ever hear! It matters. Jesus himself said, "From the lips of children and infants, you, Lord, have called forth your praise." (Matthew 21:16)

This book is full of prophetic, practical, and power-filled truth. It will change the way you view kids worship, as well as your own ability to lead. By using examples from the life of King David, as well as her own personal experiences, Yancy is purposed to empower you to raise up kids who desire to live a life of worship on a daily basis, not only on Sundays. This is about their future. Are you ready to be a part of that?

Yancy is a worship leader, songwriter and producer of hundreds of songs that make Jesus loud. Her Dove Award winning music is all the things kids love and everything adults value. She is a powerhouse at leading and teaching kids from birth to preteen how to worship, and creates popular worship resources for churches and homes around the world. Yancy is a passionate advocate of raising disciples to worship. She recently authored the book “Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship”. Because of her passion to serve the Church she created “Heartbeat”, a curriculum to teach kids the heart of worship. With a family legacy of children’s ministry, her authority and PK perspective help encourage and champion the Kidmin community that the seeds they are planting will reap a harvest that will go on to affect families for generations. Yancy lives with her husband and two sons in Nashville, TN.

S4Ep29: Laura Smith - Restore My Soul25 Jul 202200:30:53

This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with author Laura Smith about her new book for women and how the psalms impacts parenting and kids.

The book of Psalms is full of wonderful passages that illuminate the intimate connection we get to have with our Father. Despite the chaos of our busy lives, the Father is frequently whispering to our souls to spend time with Him. As you read Restore My Soul: The Power and Promise of 30 Psalms you will receive revelation and insight from best-selling author Laura L. Smith on the beauty of connecting with God through His Word. Dive into the power of the Psalms and be inspired to praise God every day.

  • Showcases 30 popular psalms and the timeless truths and emotions they reveal about our daily lives

  • For women who are longing to deepen their faith

  • Explores popular Bible themes to encourage you to participate in spiritual development

Laura L. Smith has been searching her whole life for beauty. Not in the world—there’s plenty of that—in the crimson of a cardinal’s feather, in the sound of waves crashing along a shore, in the melody of a Beatles’ ballad, or in a Chagall stained glass window. The world is filled with beauty, but for her that was another story. It took her years to discover her true beauty, to fully grasp she is made in the image of her Creator, and therefore, she is beautiful. The incredible thing is…so are you. You were marvelously made by God to inspire awe. No matter what the world tries to tell you, no matter what you try to tell yourself. No one can rob you of the incredible true identity God instilled in you. Smith tells stories (through books, blogs, and speaking) in hopes of helping you discover what took her so long to see: your beautiful true reflection in Christ. Smith lives in the college town of Oxford, Ohio with her husband and four kids.

S4Ep22: SOS GOD!06 Jun 202200:35:47

This week co-hosts Amy Parker and Mike Nawrocki chat (and sing) with author Susan Burritt about her new book SOS GOD!

SOS GOD!’s humorous poems inspire children to pray, showing them they don’t need fancy words to talk to God. They can speak to Him like a BFF!! Each poem encourages kids to have a personal relationship with the Lord, reassuring them of His love, no matter what! They’ll learn to be grateful for the joys in their lives, and they’ll discover they can ask God for help with whatever ails them!

The poems are narrated in a child’s voice, with Bible scriptures listed by each one, so parents can use the book as a devotional. It is unique in its amusing child narration and its boldness to talk to a loving God about anything and everything.

Children will face fear with: “The Lord is my light and the One who saves me. So why should I fear anyone? The Lord protects my life. So why should I be afraid?” Psalm 27: 1 ICB

They’ll conquer low self-esteem, proclaiming: “I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well.” Psalm 139:14 ICB

They’ll rejoice in God’s goodness, declaring: “God, your love is so precious! You protect people as a bird protects her young under her wings. They eat the rich food in your house. You let them drink from your river of pleasure.” Psalm 36:7-8 ICB

There are also activity sheets at the end for children to interact with the Bible. SOS GOD! is the perfect book to draw children (and adults) closer to God.

Susan C. Burritt was born in Rochester, New York. Facing difficulties in childhood, she discovered reading took her to new and exciting worlds! Books became her greatest pleasure and escape. She moved to Los Angeles to become a famous movie star! When that didn’t happen, she made use of her Masters in Education. She teaches and motivates youth at a private learning center in Los Angeles, and at charter schools throughout the Los Angeles area. Susan wrote SOS GOD! to inspire children to talk to God about everything because she firmly believes that the most powerful solution to problems is receiving God’s help through prayer.

S4Ep16: Bags: Helping Kids Lighten the Load25 Apr 202200:42:11

This week Amy and Mike talk with author Chris Sasser about his new book Bags: Helping Kids Lighten the Load.

Parents want their kids to grow up and live emotionally, relationally, and spiritually healthy lives. More and more kids today are struggling to live this dream. As they go through life, they encounter people and situations that lead them to pack and carry some enormous emotional baggage that holds them back from living in the grace and freedom that Christ provides. Parents are in a unique position to help their kids "lighten the load" along the way. BAGS helps parents become aware of the specific bags kids tend to pack as they grow up, how these bags tend to get packed, and the long-lasting negative impacts they can have. BAGS also offers practical strategies parents can employ to leverage their influence and prevent some of these bags from getting packed in the first place. The hope is that we can lead our kids into a more stable and healthy future.

Chris Sasser is the Pastor of Family Ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC. He has served in full-time ministry since 1993, working with children’s, middle school, high school, college, and parent ministries. He has a passion for equipping and encouraging parents and leaders to help the next generation walk with God. Chris shares thoughts and ideas at www.equipandencourage.com and loves to share with students, leaders, and parents. Chris is married to Karin and they have two children, CJ and Kylie. Chris is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and has done some graduate work at Fuller Theological Seminary and Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary

S4Ep15: Heroes of the Bible Devotional18 Apr 202200:35:11

This week Amy and Mike talk with New York Times best-selling author Joshua Cooley about his book Heroes of the Bible Devotional.

Ask any 12-year-old kid to describe a hero, and you will get some of the following answers: a superstar athlete, a soldier on the front lines, or a guy in a cape who can jump over buildings.

Most of our “heroes” are related to human achievement and glory, but the Bible has a very different concept. The list of people who were great in God’s eyes might shock you. This devotional book is about their stories.

The 90 devotions feature the qualities of Bible characters that made them heroic. From Moses to Esther to Jesus, kids will learn more about how these Bible people pleased God. They will know that qualities like courage, worshiping God, and being a true friend are heroic actions. The devotional features line drawings of the Bible characters to further help youth identify with and learn about the people in the Bible.

Joshua Cooley is a New York Times bestselling author, a freelance writer/editor, and has 14 years of experience as a fulltime children’s minister. He has authored or contributed to 14 books, including many devotionals for children and youth such as the Heroes of the Bible Devotional; Creator, Father, King: A One Year Journey With God; and The One Year Devotions With Jesus. In 2018, he teamed with Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles to co-author the star quarterback’s bestselling memoir, Believe It: My Journey of Success, Failure, and Overcoming the Odds. Josh lives in Durham, N.C. S4Ep13: Read It, See It, Say It, Sing It!04 Apr 202200:27:16

Amy and Mike talk with author Hunter Beless this week about her new book Read It, See It, Say It, Sing It!

In Hunter Beless’s delightfully whimsical picture book, Read It, See It, Say It, Sing It!, multiple diverse families grow in their knowledge of and love for the Bible in four simple ways:

  • Reading, or hearing God’s Word read aloud
  • Seeing, or memorizing Scripture
  • Saying, or talking about the Bible together
  • Singing, or worshiping God and proclaiming the Gospel

As the characters read, see, say, and sing the Bible, they learn that God uses His Word to speak to us, mature us, help us fight sin, and expand His kingdom. Young readers will understand that as we study, memorize, repeat, and declare Scripture, Jesus is glorified, and our lives are changed forever!

A celebration of the living and active Word of God, Read It, See It, Say It, Sing It! elevates Scripture to the place it belongs in our lives—as the highest and most trustworthy authority. Children will see that by knowing and  loving God’s Word, we can draw closer to Jesus, the hero of the Bible!

HUNTER BELESS is passionate about helping women know and love God more, especially through His Word. She is the founder of Journeywomen, hosts the Journeywomen podcast, and loves doing ministry in her local church context. Hunter and her husband, Brooks, have three amazing kiddos who memorize Scripture way faster than their mama! When they’re not reading, seeing, saying, or singing the Bible, you can find the Beless family camping, riding bikes, or snuggling up with a good book.

S4Ep8: Hues of You with Dr Lucretia Berry28 Feb 202200:40:36

This week Amy and Mike talk with author Dr Lucretia Berry about her new book Hues of You: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In.

We live in a vibrant, colorful world, and though we enthusiastically teach our children the hues we find in nature and in the objects around us, we often find it difficult to teach them about the beauty of different skin tones.

Dr. Lucretia Berry, founder of Brownicity—a learning community dedicated to education and advocacy for antiracism—is often asked by parents, teachers, and caregivers how they can best approach this conversation with kids. In response, she created a fun and interactive tool that provides children and their adults a way to brave the shift from color blindness to color consciousness—HUES OF YOU: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In (WaterBrook; on sale 1/4/22).

Filled with lively and bright full-color illustrations by Adia Carter, the book’s drawing and writing activities are divided into four main sections—Hues of You, Hues of Your Family, Hues of Your Ancestors, and Hues of Your Friends. Each page gives kids space to explore their identity in a variety of social contexts and to celebrate the diversity of skin tones in the world around them.

Adults who have felt hesitant or unprepared to talk with the children in their lives about skin tone, race, and ethnicity will find that Hues of You is the perfect starting point. With this engaging resource, they can help lay the groundwork for a more positive, affirming, and inclusive world.

While diving in Rockport Harbor, Parker Buckman makes a terrifying discovery, haunting enough to keep him out of the water. His best friend, Harley Lotitto, has his own dilemma and needs Parker’s help.

Meeting Harley halfway won’t cut it. Parker will need to be all in—which can only mean trouble. Harley is in more danger than anyone realizes. His uncle Ray has cornered him into secretly finding recordings he’d hidden before going to prison. Evidence powerful enough to get Ray out of jail—and put a worse man behind bars. If Harley succeeds, Quinn Lochran will get multiple life sentences.

Lochran has a dark plan to make sure that evidence never sees the light of day. Ray’s “get-out- of-jail” ticket might just become Harley’s death warrant—and Parker’s, too.

Jelly and Ella know the boys are up to something. They want to help, but—unless the boys open up—they feel powerless to do a thing. They have a feeling that the boys are going to need all the help they can get . . . and they’re right. These friends have survived deadly situations together before. But this time escape seems more hopeless than ever. What do you do whenyou’re surrounded by darkness . . . and dawn will never get there in time?

S6Ep3: Parenting: Getting it Right22 Jan 202400:46:40

This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey interview author Sandra Stanley about her new book, written with husband Andy, Parenting: Getting it Right.

Am I getting parenting right? Most parents at all stages find themselves asking this question.
Whether you’re sleep-deprived with a colicky newborn or navigating the emotional roller coaster of a teenager, parenting has its lows and highs, its confusion and clarity, its big blowups
and small victories. And no matter our family’s makeup or our children’s personalities, many of us experience anxiety over our children’s futures and often fear making a mistake.

Andy and Sandra Stanley are no strangers to this feeling. As parents of three grown children and cofounders of North Point Ministries, the Stanleys have spent decades teaching and
learning. They’ve counseled families, mentored others, and learned from mentors of their own, all while leading one of the largest churches in the country.

In Parenting: Getting It Right (Zondervan Books; January 17, 2023), Andy and Sandra combine their experience and wisdom into a guide that helps readers understand and live by essential
parenting principles.

S6Ep27: The Man in the Tree and the Brand New Start05 Aug 202400:30:26

This week hosts Sarah Humphrey and Mike Nawrocki welcome back returning guest Carl Laferton to the podcast to talk about his new book, The Man in the Tree and the Brand New Start.

Teach children that genuine faith in Jesus leads to a transformed life.

Zacchaeus was very short, very rich, and not very happy, but his encounter with Jesus changed everything.

In response to the grace Jesus showed him, Zacchaeus was transformed from the inside out. He repented, treasured Jesus above everything else, and showed kindness and generosity to others like never before.

Use this story to teach children that only following Jesus will make them truly happy and fulfilled, and that genuine repentance and faith is demonstrated by loving others.
