In this episode of the show I reflect on the recently concluded MirYam Institute I-SAP tour to the Nazi death camps in Poland and to the sites of the D-DAY landings in Normandy, attended by close to fifty delegates from U.S. military colleges.

Together with Yaakov Lappin, we then turn our attention to the ongoing crisis surrounding the drafting of the Haredi community into the IDF before assessing the status of the hostage crisis and the threat of the Iranian nuclear weapons program.

In June, 2023, The MirYam Institute brought close to fifty U.S. and Canadian Military Cadets to Poland and to Israel for the annual Israel Strategy & Policy Tour (I-SAP).


All of the participants will go on to serve as officers in their respective militaries and to deploy throughout the world.


After a three day tour of the Nazi Death Camps in Poland, the delegation traveled on for a twelve day tour of the Jewish state.


I-SAP prides itself on presenting a broad range of perspectives to the delegates for their consideration, from within the bounds of mainstream, Israeli opinion.


In this recording, you’ll hear my conversation with the current leader of the embattled Labor party, MK Meirav Michaeli, followed by questions from the cadets.

Episode 31 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Benjamin Anthony, Co-Founder of the Miryam Institute. 

In this episode, in which Benjamin succeeds Danny Ayalon as Chuck’s interlocutor, they begin by extending their deep appreciation to Danny for his participation to date. Danny is moving on to new and better pursuits and Chuck and Benjamin wish him every success. It has been a pleasure working with him. 

Chuck and Benjamin then turned to the ongoing crisis over the judicial reform process, which has reached another turning point with the proposed nullification of the “reasonability” criteria by which the Supreme Court has heretofore weighed the cases before it. Both Chuck and Benjamin agree that the reform process was entirely unnecessary, is tearing Israeli society and the IDF apart and has weakened Israel in the eyes of its adversaries. They disagree regarding its causes. Chuck believes Netanyahu’s legal considerations motivated it, Benjamin disagrees. They also disagree over the growing threat to serve by reservists in elite IDF units, should the legislation actually go through. Although both find this highly problematic and are concerned precedent set, Chuck’s thinking has changed and he is now supportive of it, whereas Benjamin believes there is no justification whatsoever.

They then conduct an in-depth discussion of developments in the Palestinian area, including the reasons for the recent two-day operation in Jenin, its consequences and causes. Chuck continues to believe that there is no realistic alternative to a separation between the two peoples, presumably through a two-state solution, Benjamin does not believe that this is possible and seeks alternatives.

In this episode of the briefing, I was joined by Yaakov Lappin to discuss the aftermath of Operation Shield and Arrow - both strategically and personally. 

Yaakov described his feelings as a father to young children, particularly in the aftermath of a direct strike by Palestinian Islamic Jihad on his hometown of Rehovot in central Israel - a strike that killed an 87 year old woman and injured others. 

He and I strongly disagree on certain aspects of the operation, despite our shared admiration for the targeted killings of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leadership. 

Time will tell which of our respective assessments is correct, if either one is. For now, we are pleased to be the beneficiaries of peace and quiet beneath the skies of Israel.

To mark Yom Hazikaron / Israel Remembrance Day, The MirYam Institute recorded a conversation featuring Rozita Pnini and Benjamin Anthony, both of whom are co-founders of The MirYam Institute and IDF veterans. 

During that discussion, moderated by Miryam Institute in-house analyst, Yaakov Lappin, Benjamin and Rozita reflected upon their recollections of service and the sacrifices made by the members of the IDF. They also weighed in on the importance of Yom Hazikaron / Israel Remembrance day transcending the regrettable political discourse currently engulfing the Israel conversation, so that Israelis are able to mourn those loved ones lost to them, in the total absence of undue politicization and and political grandstanding. Israel Remembrance Day is a day for the bereaved to solemnly reflect upon the Israeli victims of terror, and the servicemembers who fell in defense of the one and only Jewish state. Anything that detracts from that, must be shunned and banished from remembrance ceremonies.
