Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 5: Verse 1 - Verse 6)14 Aug 202200:32:30

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 5th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 1 - 6.  Arjuna asks a question that every seeker wants to know - is it better to renounce the world or should I live a normal life and be spiritual? What is easier and will both paths lead to the same destination? Sri Krishna responded by expressing that both Karma Yoga and Gyana Yoga lead to the Highest attainment which is mukti but of both paths - it is karma yoga that is easier. Understand that the Atma does not have the fruits like pain and pleasure of any action, this then brings freedom. Don’t naively claim one path will reach self-knowledge and the other will not. This is foolish thinking. Be smart and understand both paths reach the same outcome - Self-Realization. Sri Krishna explains how the path of action is what prepares the mind for Knowledge of Brahman and then this will lead to freedom. For the beginner on this journey, they should perform selfless actions, giving up all outcomes and then they will attain the Highest - which is this Gyana. How quickly we get there depends on how quickly and diligently we practice.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 39 - Verse 42)07 Aug 202200:31:31

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 39 - 42.  Sri Krishna guides us on the importance of having shraddha and giving our complete focus on this Gyan and that is how we balance ourselves in this most Supreme Brahman - the Ultimate Self. To be in contentment in this life and the next, we need to go beyond the superficial purpose of living and enter a deeper understanding that pervades all of existence.  See yourself as the Atman - this Brahman and watch every action of yours be based on humanity and they are ethical. This chapter is brought to a beautiful end as Sri Krishna gives us the lesson we need to understand and the natural result of its practice. We are nothing but the True Self - this Atman.

Wisdom of the Mystics: Meister Eckhart31 Jul 202200:34:22

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the wisdom of the Christian Mystic Meister Eckhart. He had a distinguished career became a Parisian Professor of Theology and took a leading pastoral and organizational role in the Dominican Order.

In the language of the Christian tradition, Eckhart expounds the eternal mysteries in a style that is fresh and original in the best sense. Through the vividness of his use of imagery,  Eckhart paradoxically directs us to that which lies beyond the image - going beyond the name and form of both Christ and God.

The depth and universality of Eckhart's teaching have drawn seekers of truth to the radical notion of oneness. His radical and penetrating insight makes him an interesting mystic to learn from.

In this episode, I go through the mystical sayings of Meister Eckhart that mainly focus on what religion is and the oneness of Truth, beyond traditions and institutions.

I hope you enjoyed listening to the Wisdom of the Mystics series and if you are interested in listening to more episodes about Non-Duality and a deep dive into the Bhagavad Gita, please follow/subscribe to this Podcast.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 34 - Verse 38)24 Jul 202200:30:31

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 34 - 38.  Sri Krishna guides Arjuna to give utmost respect to the sages and rishis who know Brahman. Arjuna must serve them, ask sincere questions, share this wisdom with all, so that this Gyana can be taught to him. What others can't see, these rishis and gurus can see. Arjuna can never be deluded or confused again. He will see that all beings, himself and Krishna are all one - this Supreme Brahman. It doesn't matter what you think of yourself, how your past was, or how you are now, this wisdom will always carry you to the safety of your True Self. Sri Krishna explains how the Gyana burns away all our karma! Immerse yourself deeper into the Atman - unite every action in remembrance of Brahman, give every thought and action as a sacred offering to the devas and be fulfilled.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 30 - Verse 33)17 Jul 202200:31:46

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 30 - 33.  Sri Krishna instructs us to dedicate everything to Brahman, as a sacred offering as this will keep the mind focussed on worship and this naturally creates selfless acts, and no reactions from karma will have its effect upon you. Sri Krishna explains to only consume that which you have offered to the devas, thinking of Brahman. Without this, material success at the very least is not even achieved. Yajna is essential. Sri Krishna explains everything is Brahman and is offered to It. To get freedom is to understand yajna and then practice it. For everything is the Lord’s, to the Lord it returns. Sri Krishna guides Arjuna that this Gyana of Brahman is worth far more than anything material. Giving yourself to the Divine is the most important and supreme offering.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 24 - Verse 29)10 Jul 202200:26:23

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 24 - 29.  Sri Krishna instructs us to be completely one in Brahman and to offer all actions to Brahman. Sri Krishna highlights two differences between spiritual aspirants - some do it to please the devas, some offer their mind to the Ultimate Reality. Sri Krishna gives us two options on how to deal with the senses. One is to eliminate any information perceived from the senses before they reach the mind. The other is to let the senses give the information to the mind and the mind burns its effects by offering everything to Brahman. Both paths lead to the purification of the mind. Through thorough negation, we can reach Brahman. Some give up different things, take up certain practices, become monks, some offer their life breath as a sacred offering to Brahman.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 19 - Verse 23)03 Jul 202200:31:22

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 19 - 23. Sri Krishna makes a beautiful comment about the non-doership of a person and how their intellect is always turned towards Brahman. Once this is done, all consequences or reactions to their actions are burned away by the knowledge of the Atman. The real karma yogi appears to be acting but because they are completely satisfied, they in fact do nothing because they don't care about the reactions to their actions. The goal is to see ourselves as the formless awareness and then we have no karmic reactions created, we act without feeling anxious as we are transparent in knowing this reality of life. We have no desires and don't grab for any results. The Sage is always balanced in their own inherent peace. They see the Atman in one and all, therefore, they can easily be free from the outcome of any action. Understanding the oneness of All, by performing every action as a sacred offering to the Divine, they know what they are - this Formless Awareness.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 13 - Verse 18)19 Jun 202200:24:57

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 13 - 18. Sri Krishna gives details about the varna system, and why it was created. However, Krishna has left this to humans with the details. There is no need for the caste system today, it has very little purpose. Sri Krishna explains how to transcend the rules of karma and that is by not being attached to the results of the actions we do. We are instructed by Sri Krishna to follow the path of the ancient rishis who wanted moksha and follow this path of Karma Yoga - transcend the results of our actions. This is where the Bhagavad Gita will evolve the definition of what is karma and akarma. We must know the subtle differences with action despite how difficult it is to understand. Sri Krishna explains how a perfected yogi can tell the subtleties of material cause and effect between inaction in action, and action in inaction.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 9 - Verse 12)12 Jun 202200:27:08

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 9 - 12. Sri Krishna instructs us that we must accept Krishna’s divine birth and understand the purpose. If we do then we attain Him, as the Supreme atma when we die and not be in the cycle of birth and death. Sri Krishna explains that those that get over desires, fear and anger, who focus on the Supreme, are completely purified through knowledge and simple living, they attain the same Brahman, which is Krishna’s own divine nature.  Whatever approach we take with Sri Krishna, he reciprocates this. The importance of this verse is to highlight that even if people do now want to have liberation, there is still something they can attain. But it will not be Krishna’s Supreme Reality, which is Brahman. But it will be fulfilled in this transactional reality, in this world.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4: Verse 1 - Verse 8)05 Jun 202200:37:38

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 1 - 8.  Sri Krishna establishes the ancient aspect of his wisdom and explains how the teaching is passed down and then how it gets lost, it loses its value. Society transforms and changes. Sri Krishna explains that this highest teaching is shared and beautifully understood through a deep friendship. Arjuna’s question of how Krishna gave this knowledge to the Deva of the Sun millions of years ago is logical and asks this before anyone can doubt it. Sri Krishna explains that both himself and arjuna have had many incarnations on this planet but as Sri Krishna identifies himself with the Supreme Being, he remembers it all but Arjuna who is only attached to his body, has forgotten. Sri Krishna explains that he is eternal and can appear within matter at will as he is Immortal Self. Sri Krishna expresses why he appears as an avatar and this is due to the lack of righteousness on the planet.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 40 - Verse 43)22 May 202200:22:38

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 40 - 43.  Sri Krishna tells us what happens when those distorted desires hides within our senses, mind and intellect, therefore it ruins our relationship and connection with others, we fail to see our true self and we do actions that only cause harm and destruction. By following the niyamas, we will be able to control our bodily senses, therefore remove any desires that may affect our spiritual liberation. Sri Krishna tells us the ultimate process of what is superior and this is something we must adhere to in order to be successful. Sri Krishna guides us that we must let the mind be conquered by the real King of the self - which is Brahman/Pure Awareness.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 36 - Verse 39)15 May 202200:22:48

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 36 - 39.  Arjuna asks this question that we all feel, that we may have felt before we started on this spiritual path about what force makes us go astray. Paap is powered by a force that starts with an unfulfilled desire that transforms into anger and then is fueled by raja guna -which is when the mind becomes hazy with overthinking and this consumes us and becomes that destructive force. Sri Krishna gives examples to highlight how anger and unfulfilled desires distorts our discerning faculty of our senses, therefore we never see a situation clearly. Sri Krishna gives us a great analysis on why material desires can catch our attention and take us away from the spiritual path. It creates unbalance, which is not great for the truth seeker. Even the wisest suffer.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 30 - Verse 35)08 May 202200:32:30

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 30 - 35.  Sri Krishna guides Arjuna that dedicate and perform all actions as an offering to Brahman - that Pure Awareness. Have no selfishness at all and with the confusion gone, Arjuna should follow his individual nature and fight this war. If we stick to the message of Karma Yoga, we dedicate all actions to Brahman, then we will be able to have the strong conviction that will contain no resentment about the supreme influence of this practice - which is liberation. These individuals will face no negative karmic reactions. Sri Krishna warns us of the people that don't practice the Gyana that he has given of Karma Yoga and the results of this is pure confusion. Sri Krishna tells us about how knowledge cannot change the tendencies we have gained from previous lives, they are now our nature. Sri Krishna wants us to follow our own inherent nature and that it is better to die than become the copy of someone else.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 27 - Verse 29)24 Apr 202200:28:43

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 27 - 29. Sri Krishna guides Arjuna that nature has a hold over us, the three gunas have an impact and therefore, we get confused that we are the body. The more we understand that we are the Atman through a humble inquiry, we understand that we transcend the ego respectfully and rest in the Atman. With the understanding that we are the atman, the gunas of the senses will not lead the seeker away, they understand the compulsions for more material satisfaction but will remain detached. Sri Krishna wants us to understand that we should not disturb those who are deluded by the forces of nature, the gunas as their intellect is not sharpened by discernment.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 22 - Verse 26)17 Apr 202200:28:03

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 22 - 26. Sri Krishna guides Arjuna that despite the fact he has no compulsion to act and there is nothing for him to attain, yet he still acts in the world. We all must follow the example of Sri Krishna - we must act in the world, with detachment, knowing full well that we are the Supreme Being - Brahman, Pure Awareness. If Krishna refused to act, then human beings would do this and it would bring great harm to the balance of this Earth, to the devas.  Shri Krishna is giving us an insight into the future if we do not act as enlightened beings. If we act according to our suffering, then we will cause a great extinction on this planet. Shri Krishna wants Arjuna and all of us to understand that we are karma yogis who are not to be attached to any self-serving outcome. And say if we do have to act for own benefit, then we must also keep in consideration the greater well-being of all beings in this universe  We do not tell others what to do, but we show others how to perform actions with unselfishness through our own personal example. This is the best way to show someone enlightened living!

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 17 - Verse 21)10 Apr 202200:33:02

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 17 - 21. Shri Krishna guides us that the Sage that has fully realized themselves, that are firmly established in Brahman are always in divine joy, pleasure. They are completely enlightened within and are totally established in contentment. They are no longer compelled to complete material actions but their every action is done as an act to bring others to the Divine. Happiness is only found from within when we are established in Brahman. No action can lead us to this, no achievement can lead to this. Shri Krishna tells us to do what seems impossible and that is to perform actions without attachment to the outcome. The more we practice this and perform every action as a sacred offering to Brahman, we realize that the most supreme and ultimate abode is within us and around us, this Non-dual Brahman. All of us that live in the world have the capacity to attain the realization established in karma yoga, we can be enlightened and live our normal lives established in Brahman and perform actions for the well-being of all. We are inspired by the great karma yogis and we follow their example. At first, we may imitate them but eventually we realize that those very virtues are inherent already within us.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 14 - Verse 16)03 Apr 202200:26:22

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 14 - 16. Shri Krishna guides us to understand how we are all interconnected on this planet. Therefore, be grateful for all that brings you to be alive and ensure that we share our resources with the wellbeing of all in mind. Understanding that Brahman is the underlying reality of everything that is manifested, we must perform these sacred offerings knowing that all is divine, all is Pure Consciousness. Shri Krishna gives a stark warning that society will be consumed by going against the balance of nature and will only destroy its ownself and the world along with it.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 10 - Verse 13)20 Mar 202200:36:22

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 10 - 13.  Krishna guides us on from the beginning of time, humans have been guided on how to live with nature, to respect nature and we must continuously give back to nature. We are to respect its laws and then we get aplenty back. We have to look after nature, give to nature as you take from nature and there can be universal harmony. This is only if we show our appreciate and show our gratitude. It is not enough to thank just God. We must thank everything that sustains us, even if in the end it is just a projection. If we care for each other, for every living being on the planet, then this Earth can be a paradise and a heaven for every one. We cannot leave any one person out here. Shri Krishna is warning us to not be like this. We must offer back to the universe, to the earth, to living beings with an open heart. Then the universe can give back. But if we just take and not give back, then what can the universe offer back to you. Eventually, it will exhaust itself and what greatness is in your accumulation. Shri Krishna says you are a thief.  Don't be selfish, be selfless in all that you do and attain. Give everything and do everything as an offering to others. You will get positive results. It is very simple. But if we have an iota, a speck of selfishness then nothing can stop the negative reactions from any action that we do.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3: Verse 1 - Verse 5)06 Mar 202200:19:22

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 3rd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 1 - 5. Arjuna begins with  wanting to establish what the best process is going to be for him. Is it the path of knowledge or the path of action? Arjuna’s confusion needs to be eliminated and Arjuna wants to know what path of Yoga will help him. Shri Krishna then responds and guides us that there are two paths that have always been in existence. One is of Wisdom and Knowledge for those inclined towards analytical thinking and second is the path of karma where some are inclined towards action. Both can get someone to self-realization in various degrees. Sri Krishna is ensuring that Arjuna’s doubts can be answered, so he tells him the importance of not running away from action and that moksha is not attained by just taking sannyas and entering into a monastery. No matter what you are, who you are, we are all subject to perform actions because we are manifested in this world. Whatever actions we do, we will receive the reaction or response to it.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2: Verse 70 - Verse 72)20 Feb 202200:16:03

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 2nd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 70 - 72. Shri Krishna guides that person is full of peace, who is not overwhelmed by the material desires and can watch all these desires appear and disappear. The unrestrained ones run towards sense desires and the current of these desires are endless and limitless until one has the knowledge of Brahman, their true self. The Sage only functions to maintain the body and yet, has no attachment to the body and therefore, is always at peace. Whatever is received, is not considered as one’s own but just needed for a particular function. The Knower of Brahman remains Brahman now and forever. This wonderfully sums up exactly what Chapter 2 is all about.

Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2: Verse 66 - Verse 69)13 Feb 202200:22:23

Send us a text

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 2nd chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 66 - 69. Shri Krishna guides that the person who is not able to connect to the True Self, due to the lack of discernment of what they really are, will have a mind that is unsteady and there will be nothing but turbulence and not peace. Therefore, this person can never experience contentment as there is no peace within their mind. Our mind is uncontrollable if it runs after whatever the senses want. Therefore, we lose all knowledge of the Atman and Brahman, the Real and Unreal. We lose our focus on liberation.  Shri Krishna describes how one with a steady mind can withdraw the senses away from objects and remain in that steady wisdom, where Brahman shines and illuminates all. By controlling our senses, understanding wisdom and knowing what our Real Nature is, which is Brahman, when this illumines the mind, we are truly awake even though we may look like we are sleeping to those that just chase after the objects in life, like cars, wealth, bigger houses. But really the Sage knows the real difference between who is awake and who is asleep.
