Bryant University head coach Jared Grasso joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on building a program by playing with pace.

Jared Grasso enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Bryant University men's basketball program in 2021-22.

Grasso, the 2021 USBWA District I Coach of the Year, has turned the Bryant men's basketball program around in three short years on the sidelines. Bryant is 40-44 in three seasons under Grasso, after going 23-71 in the three years prior to his arrival. Guest: Andy Bronkema, Ferris State Head Coach

Ferris State head coach Andy Bronkema joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on running a program with a simple identity: rebound, run and pass.

Andy Bronkema, who took over prior to the 2013-14 season, led the Bulldogs to four-straight GLIAC Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances from 2015-18. The Bulldogs posted their sixth-straight 20-win campaign last year in 2019-20 while recapturing the GLIAC Championship and earning yet another NCAA Division II National Tournament berth.

For his efforts, Andy Bronkema was a consensus choice as the National Coach of the Year and led the Bulldogs to a second-straight GLIAC regular-season crown and the school's fourth tourney title in a row.

In 2016-17, Ferris State posted a then-school all-time best 28-5 overall record under Andy Bronkema's direction while capturing both the GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. FSU advanced to the D2 Midwest Regional Semifinals and led the country in blocked shots for the second-straight year.

The Bulldog men's basketball squad closed a memorable 2015-16 campaign with a 24-10 overall record. FSU also reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen while finishing with its first back-to-back 20-win campaigns since the late 1980s. The Bulldogs made their first appearance in the NCAA Tourney under his direction in 2014-15 after claiming the league tournament title.

Episode 198: Stan Johnson, DOC - Defense, Offense and Culture12 Jan 202201:01:35

Guest: Stan Johnson, Loyola Marymount Head Coach

Loyola Marymount head coach Stan Johnson joins the Basketball Podcast to share his insights on defense, offense, and culture or what he calls DOC.

Born in Liberia, Johnson played his college basketball at Southern Utah and Bemidji (Minnesota) State before embarking on a coaching career that would take him to such schools as Cal State Northridge, Utah, Drake, Arizona State, and Marquette.

The 2020-21 season saw meteoric growths across the board for LMU men’s basketball. The Lions finished in the top three of the West Coast Conference standings for the first time since 2005-06. In his first season as head coach, Stan Johnson guided his team through the COVID-19 pandemic and posted a winning record in the WCC for the first time since 2011-12.

LMU has posted a top-100 ranking in the NCAA’s NET, college basketball’s comprehensive metric that takes into account record, quality opponents faced, and game location, among others. LMU’s 95 ranking is the highest NET (or RPI at that time) since the Elite Eight season of 1990.

Johnson coached five seasons at Marquette University and was promoted to associate head coach in June of 2017 after helping guide the Golden Eagles to an NCAA tournament trip in 2016-17. Marquette also made a run to the NIT quarterfinals in 2017-18 and returned to the NCAAs in 2018-19.

Johnson arrived in Milwaukee after working the previous two seasons at Arizona State and was on the opposing bench in a pair of matchups against the Golden Eagles. The Sun Devils, who went 16-1 at home, participated in the NCAA tournament in 2013-14 in his first campaign with the program and earned a spot in the National Invitation Tournament in 2014-15.

Johnson also spent two seasons (2011-13) at Drake University after a three-year stint at the University of Utah, which advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2009. Johnson came to Utah after a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge in 2007-08. The Matadors finished 20-10 overall and earned a share of their first Big West Conference regular-season championship with Johnson on the staff.

Guest: Travis Steele, Xavier University Head Coach

Xavier University head coach Travis Steele joins the Basketball Podcast to share his insights on what happens from one game to the next game during the season.

Steele is 51-37 in three seasons, including a 13-8 mark in the COVID-shortened season of 2020-21. Steele led XU to a 19-13 record in the 2019-20 season, which was cut short prior to postseason play by the COVID-19 pandemic. Steele was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top first-year head coach in Division I. Steele, who finished 19-16 in his first season as the Xavier head coach, led XU to eight wins in its last 11 games. All of the opponents for those 11 games were in either the NCAA Tournament or NIT fields, including seven road and neutral site games.

Prior to being named head coach Steele spent the previous 10 seasons at Xavier, including nine on the staff of his predecessor, Chris Mack. Steele has been a part of nine NCAA Tournament teams at Xavier, including five teams that reached at least the Sweet 16. The 2017-18 team won Xavier’s first Big East Regular Season Championship, a school-record final AP ranking of No. 3 and the first NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed in school history.

Former Xavier head coach Sean Miller hired Steele prior to the 2008-09 season as Xavier’s Director of Basketball Operations. Mack promoted Steele to assistant coach after he took over the program prior to the 2009-10 season. Steele was promoted to Associate Head Coach following the 2015-16 season.

Prior to Xavier, Steele worked on the staff at Indiana. He joined the Hoosiers in August of 2006, taking on the duties of the video coordinator. After serving as the video coordinator for a season and a half while at IU, he was promoted to the position of assistant coach in February of 2008.

Prior to his time with the Hoosiers, Steele served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Wabash Valley College (2005-06) and spent a year with the Ohio State basketball program as a graduate manager (2004-05) under former XU head coach Thad Matta.

Guest: George Galanopoulos, Texas Legends NBA G-League Head Coach

Texas Legends NBA G-League head coach George Galanopoulos joins the Basketball Podcast to share his insights on defense, ball screen concepts, and coaching internationally and in the G-League.

Galanopoulos was a member of the Legends coaching staff for the 2016-17 season serving as an assistant before earning a call-up to the Dallas Mavericks. The 2016-17 season saw the Legends earn the most wins to that point in franchise history and earn a record five NBA Call-Ups. He spent two seasons as a video coordinator for the Mavericks and is currently on the bench with the Summer League team in Las Vegas. His first role with the Legends came out of an internship with the Mavericks as well when he went from player development intern in Dallas to assistant coach in Frisco.

In 2017, Galanopoulos was named Uganda National Team Head Coach, a position that he still holds. He has helped spark great success for the Uganda program as they compete for their place in African and FIBA basketball.

Along with G League, NBA, and FIBA international, Galanopoulos’ resume includes collegiate experience. While at Indiana University, Galanopoulos worked with the Hoosiers’ men’s basketball team, which helped propel him to his first position with the NBA G League’s Bakersfield Jam.

After the Jam experience, Galanopoulos then ventured overseas to coach in New Zealand’s NBL, returning to the States the following March hungry for another opportunity in the NBA. Having previously interned under Mike Procopio at legendary trainer Tim Grover’s Attack Athletics in Chicago, Galanopoulos reconnected with his old boss, now a player development coach with the Mavericks spearheading their expansive internship program. Procopio minted Galanopoulos as one of the Mavs’ 12 player development interns for the ‘15–16 season.
