Emma Thompson Shakespeare!!23 Aug 202400:27:49

Sooooooo..... not only is Emma Thompson a brilliant actor and wonderful human being, but she is the one who told Leda (Owen's wife) and Lisa Ann, in a bathroom in London after having seen that stunning As You Like It that we've talked so much about...

"Theatre is supposed to reduce you to rubble!"

Heaven knows this fabulous woman has done that SOOOOO many times in her career.

We love her!!!!!

Relationship Shakespeare16 Apr 202100:55:54

We WERE going to call this episode Romantic Shakespeare - but then we realized in a lot of the plays, non-platonic relationships are often UNromantic so.... yeah.

So therefore, in this episode, we discuss the believability and viability of the "love" relationships in Shakespeare's plays.  Can one really sustain a marriage when you fall in love in less than a page?? Can you have a happy marriage when you have managed to get married by having some whore pretend to be you so your soon to be husband HAS to marry you???

It's a conundrum.  We discuss.

Punny Shakespeare05 Feb 202100:38:43

An academic walked into a bar and sat down at the counter.  "Barkeep," he said "Pour me a stiff one. I've had a hard day." "What's the matter, friend?" said the barkeep. "Well," said the academic, "this morning's class was all about the life of Shakespeare himself. This afternoon's class will be all about his poetry. Things are going from Bard to Verse!!!"

(Ba dum dum.)

Okay, maybe that's not as good a pun as most of Will's, although there are some that groan worthy, but we can't help it - we're paronomasiacs.

(You'll learn what that is in this episode.)

Adapted Shakespeare22 Jan 202101:55:33

The well known American author Susan Vreeland was correct - art begets art!!!

On the heels of our Film Shakespeare series - here is our longest episode so far, comprising even MORE stuff that is based on, or inspired by, the works of our friend Will!!!

His plays have given birth to SOOOOO MUCH ART!!!!!

We can tell you this....

Shakespeare AIN'T GOING NOWHERE, folks, and this episode proves that indisputably.

Violent Shakespeare08 Jan 202101:05:29

"Have at thee, coward!!!"

As we've discussed before, there are SOOOOO many instances of violence of one kind or another in the Shakespeare canon.  So... how does that get translated onto the stage or in a film in a believable way?

We talk to Randy Kovitz, master fight choreographer, who helps us understand how we can stab, strangle, smother, or otherwise subdue a character and make it look real - while being safe... cuz we're only ACTING, people!!!

Christmas Shakespeare25 Dec 202000:29:24

Merrie Christmas, dear listeners!!!

In this episode we discuss how those Elizabethans celebrated Christmas - for twelve days, those filthy animals!!!

ALSO.....

At the end of the episode is a special gift from us to you... Merry Merry!!!!

So now is come our joyful'st feast,
   Let every man be jolly.
Each room with ivy leaves is drest,
   And every post with holly.
Though some churls at our mirth repine,
   Round your foreheads garlands twine,
Drown sorrow in a cup of wine,
And let us all be merry.

(George Wither—16th c. poet)

Racial Shakespeare11 Dec 202001:05:15

Was Shakespeare racist?  Was he anti-Semitic?  Or was he just writing as a product of his times?

And what about modern day productions of Shakespeare - how  do they deal with these  issues?  Is there such a thing as truly colorblind casting?

We are proud to  welcome our first guest (YAY!!!!), the wonderful and talented Alvin Keith, to discuss this very timely, important, and frankly, often inflammatory topic.

Judi Dench Shakespeare!!09 Aug 202400:37:16

In the last couple of months, we've delved into some of the most well-known Shakespearean actors.  All of them male.

It's time to shift the focus!!!!! In this episode, we rush headlong into the female side of this category - and who better to start with than herself, Dame Judi Dench???

(Sounds of Owen and Lisa Ann bowing and scraping.)

Literally (like the title of her recent book!), Shakespeare was the man who paid her rent!!!

Yaasssss, Queen!!!!!

We're back at it!  The bard's youngest lovers on the big screen!!

But we digress.

We give thanks for YOU this year, dear listener!!!

Winning Shakespeare13 Nov 202000:40:38

Winners and losers... losers and winners....

What kind of behaviour does a winner or loser display?  Are they gracious?  Do they experience a moment of clarity in loss?  Do they ascend with humility or do they try to burn the freaking house down??

On the heels of the recent United States Presidential election of Joe Biden (and yes, he DID win, contrary to what SOME people would like to believe), we return once more to the plays of the Bard to understand the etiquette - or lack thereof - within the scope of political power.

It's Halloween!!! Samhaim!!! Tyrannical Shakespeare16 Oct 202000:35:59

It's almost November, people!!!

There are certain ELECTIONS in certain countries that are very much on our minds, as well as the minds of the rest of the planet.

So... how  we do deal with it?  We talk about the political atmosphere that surrounded our boy Will!!  Was there a separation of church and state for Shakespeare?  Hell, no!  Shakespeare had a devil of a time maneuvering around the politics of his time, but managed to stay under the radar of those who would chop off his head for treason.

"Tyranny attempts to poison not merely the present but generations to come, to extend itself forever.  Tyrannies are enemies of the future."

Just sayin'.....

"By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes....." (and in some cases, it's the way the text of Macbeth is bastardized - feh!!)

One of the greatest dramatic plays ever written about the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake, we deep dive into the many versions of the Scottish Play available on film.

Can you smell the blood still???

To be, or no to be..... HAMLET!!!!  SOOOOOO many famous actors have given their collective eye-teeth to have a go at this role, and not just on stage. In this continuation episode, we go through a bunch of the many film and/or video Hamlets we've been watching lately.

And BTW... who knew how sexy Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek or Quint from Jaws as the unctuous Claudius could be?!?!? (pant pant)

Angels and ministers of grace defend us!!!!

Assholes, Douchebags, and Fuck-ups in Shakespeare21 Aug 202000:39:03

What is the difference between an asshole, a douchebag, and a fuck-up?

And that being said, how about a jagoff, a prick, and a dick?  And what title transcends even those???

In this episode, we discuss our favorites of the MANY somewhat detestable characters in Shakespeare, attempting to delineate between the above monikers.

Strap in, people - it's a bumpy ride through the crapola!!!

Film Shakespeare - Part I07 Aug 202000:40:15

Did you know that Will Shakespeare - that bitch! - has the kind of numbers on IMDB that every freakin' actor DREAMS of????

It's true.

This is the first episode in a series, 'cuz this category is just too damn big for one. For the foreseeable future, until we've satisfactorily exhausted the category, the first episode each month will be an episode that falls under the Film Shakespeare umbrella.

Get your popcorn ready, you surly tardy-gaited clotpoles!!!

Filthy Shakespeare09 Jun 202000:38:18

Were you ever sitting in high school English class, struggling to stay awake while listening to the theatre kids schmacting Romeo and Juliet out loud, and you hear a phrase that perks you up for a second? You think, "Was that a dick joke??? Nah, can't be, it's Shakespeare."

It WAS a dick joke!

And there's SO much more.

Sibling Shakespeare17 May 202400:39:39

You know, dear listeners... we are such dear, dear friends (and have been for so many years!) that we truly feel as close to siblings as two people can get - who aren't actually biologically related. (Is blood actually thicker than water?)

Plus, National Siblings Day was just a few weeks ago! It started us thinking... (always a scary prospect!)... how many pairs and trios and mobs of siblings are in the plays of Shakespeare??

In today's episode, we do a deep dive into the familial connections in the canon.

Worst Roles in Shakespeare13 Dec 202400:53:26

Whoever said there are no small roles, only small actors... is full of shit.

YES THERE ARE!!!! There are hundreds of small roles in the Shakespeare canon, and a lot of them SUCK. (As do some not so small roles.)

In this episode, we slap that stupid phrase right out of the proverbial mouth and discuss all the roles we can think of that fit this particular (crappy) bill.

Shakespeare - The Plays - Twelfth Night 05 Apr 202400:45:08

We had so much fun delving deeply into Julius Caesar last episode that we decided to tackle one of the comedies!!

Twelfth Night is quite special to us, because we played Viola and Malvolio together a bunch of years back at Tulsa Shakespeare in the Park.

That being said, we have A LOT to say about the play, that production, the characters, other productions we've seen and all that proverbial jazz.

Enjoy!!

Stabby Shakespeare22 Mar 202400:40:07

Beware the Ides of March!!!

So, last week we were just shooting the proverbial shite, and it was - of course - March 15, the Ides of March. Which led us to a conversation about Julius Caesar. Which led us to a conversation about the state of politics in the good ol' US of A.

Ugh.

So we thought... let's talk some more about this!!!

Dinner with Shakespeare23 Feb 202400:51:16

One of our lovely listeners, Susan, asked us "Which characters would you most enjoy (or not) to have a meal with?"

When we read it, we thought: What a fantastic idea for a podcast episode!!!

So this is it!!! We discuss who in the canon we'd love - or not love!! - to break bread with.

Thanks, Susan!!  We love you!!  Enjoy!!

Swan Shakespeare26 Jan 202400:48:23

Oh listeners... a year ago the podcast was in the heart center, Stratford Upon Avon.  We were reminiscing about our lovely adventures there and thought...

What about the swans?

Luckily for us, LA's partner Don is an animal guy.  So we asked him to do some research on swans, those Stratford ones in particular.

Did you know swans are monogamous and mate for life? And that they are bad asses that you never want to piss off?? It's true!!

Join us as we dive (ha!) into the Swans of Avon.

Clerical Shakespeare15 Dec 202300:46:13

Remember when you were a little kid, and your mom and dad made you go to church/synagogue/mosque even though you would rather have stayed home and watched cartoons?

Yeah, us too.  But that has very little to do with this episode, except that we discuss the religious characters in the Shakespeare canon. Some are genuinely pious, most are manipulative, and some are drunk.

Have at it!!!

Quacks and Shysters in Shakespeare01 Dec 202300:35:03

Yeah, yeah, we know... talk about lawyers in Shakespeare and everyone quotes the famous line to kill them all.  But do they actually need to all be killed?

And what about the doctors in the canon? Are they as shitty as the lawyers?

In this episode, we ponder those very questions, and discuss the characters that fall in those categories.

Though fools at home condemn 'em."
                                                                     - Antonio, The Tempest, Act III Scene 3

Oh, the traveling life!!! We LOVE to travel, and we think Shakespeare felt the same way, because he uses SOOOOO many different countries and places in the canon!

In today's episode, we discuss the myriad of locations in Shakespeare plays.

Book your tickets and let's go!!!

Kind Hearted Shakespeare 17 Nov 202300:47:45

Okay... we know that we have a penchant for discussing the shittiest of characters in the canon. It's fun, we can't help it. Don't judge!!!

However....

In this episode, we talk about those characters that are genuinely good, honest, loving, compassionate people.

Mostly.

Mother Fucking Shakespeare03 Nov 202300:40:36

Think about it... how many characters are mothers in the canon?  Now think about THIS... how many characters in Shakespeare don't seem to HAVE mothers??

Weird, right???

This one's for you, Joanelle.

Okay. We all know that the Shakespeare canon is simply rife with all kinds of bad doings - but which ones are the most heinous??

In this episode we talk about those characters who exhibit just downright criminal behavior.

Oh Officer Krupke................
