Welcome to Season 21!! Today, I am chatting with seasoned homemaker and mother of 10, Elizabeth Ours, who had the most clever blog name ever back the day,  Yes, They are All Ours. Get it? 😁

Married right out of college, Elizabeth has been homemaking for four decades and homeschooled all 10 of her children. She has so much wisdom to share and her joyful attitude is contagious.

I'm also sharing what I'm loving lately on Allison's Update and what to expect this season on The Art of Home.

Monday Motivation #6 | Homemaker Culture, Cultivating a Creative Life12 Aug 202400:21:09

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

In today's Monday Motivation I'm riffing on the popular Charlotte Mason idea of Mother Culture™ and applying it to the homemaker. Mother Culture™ stresses the importance of cultivating your own soul and mind with the express purpose of having something good, true and beautiful to offer those in your care.

Homemaker Culture, as I have experienced it over the past 30+ years, involves claiming small windows of time amidst our busy days to cultivate a rich reading life, religious life, artful life and creative life. This episode will focus on the creative life, with some practical suggestions to help you begin to pursue Homemaker Culture.

Homemaker Portrait | Darah Rogers12 Jun 202401:05:13

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

I am chatting with Darah Rogers who has been keeping a home for several years…including a time of single homemaking in a youth camp cabin during covid and most recently for 2 years with her husband and baby girl. Darah shares how she struggled to reconcile her long standing desire to be at home full time with the cultural pressure she felt to pursue a career and how she is still resolving that struggle. We cover all the usual ground of fails, wins, tips and Titus 2 advice. Darah has that youthful zeal for all the  homemaking things and I picked up several new ideas from her!

In Allison's Update, I'm sharing my favorite new kitchen tool, how you can contribute to our Season 20 theme and all about our new private Facebook group, Homemaker Forum.

For this Homemaker Portrait, I chat with my friend, Karen Sheppard, about homemaking through generations. Karen is a veteran homemaker who has cultivated a place to belong not just for herself and her husband, but for her children and her grandchildren. Just as she was deeply influenced by her grandmother, Karen works to influence her grandchildren and hopefully, one day, her great-grandchildren. Her story  is a testimony to the value of investing in the future by practicing the art of home.

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

On to today’s homemaker portrait, I am chatting with Alecia Doty. She was nominated by her friend Tina Bergs. Here’s what Tina had to say about Alecia’s practice of the art of home: "Alecia makes her home a place where children are nurtured in the love of Christ and pointed to what is true, good, and beautiful. She is a welcoming hostess who intentionally uses her home as a place where souls can find rest, and be met with the love of Christ."

After spending an hour or so in conversation with Alecia, I can see why Tina gave such a glowing recommendation. Alecia has such great insight into the art of home. She poignantly explains that homemaking is a beautiful, hard, sanctifying, creative adventure; a high and holy calling which, if we allow, God will use to draw us to himself and transform us into the image of Jesus so that the Gospel will be displayed through our homemaking.

I am so excited to finally be talking about the 3rd Pillar of Homemaking, Rhythms and Routines, with my friend and past AoH guest, Leslie Lucadou.

We will start with a brief review of the 4 Pillars of Homemaking, then spend some time defining rhythms and routines-talking about the difference between the two and giving some examples of each. Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. Finally we end with a few pitfalls to avoid when establishing rhythms and routines.

Resources for Depression:

  • Conquering Depression by Bruce Hennigan and Mark Sutton:  *This book helped me learn to identify what was causing, contributing to, and intensifying my anxiety and depression and gave me tools to fight back.
  • American Association of Christian Counselors  *If you are a church member, you may want to start by talking with your pastor for counsel and recommendations of christian counselors in your area.  I cannot stress enough how valuable counseling has been for me...and the necessity to work with a counselor who will use scripture to help direct you to the truly Wonderful Counselor who knows you better than you know yourself.

Monday Motivation #5 | The Enemy of Home29 Jul 202400:15:55

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

We all desire a peaceful, fruitful home where everyone feels loved, valued and welcome. We can all think of things that hinder or even hijack that goal, but the most sneaky enemy of home may be lurking in the dark corners of our own hearts.

In today's Monday Motivation I share a story about this enemy of home involving a close encounter of the natural kind. In keeping with the discovery and nature theme, I'm sharing my favorite apps for identifying the animals, plants and bugs around your home and neighborhood.

I also share a couple of listener comments and a tip from the AoH Mail Bag.

Homemaker Portrait | Naomi Fata15 Nov 202301:22:43

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

In today’s episode I am talking with In-the-Trenches homemaker, Naomi Fata. She’s been married 16 years and has 3 kids, ages 8 to 13. She homeschools and runs a sewing and alterations business out of her home--she is a very busy lady. We discuss how she has learned/is learning to balance homemaking, schooling and a home business through compromise, firm boundaries and letting go of some expectations. Naomi is passionate about teaching others how sewing can help them make the most of their clothing and home decor resources.

Over the years, Naomi realized that this "stay-at-home dream life" she asked God for does not come with ease. It is challenging to manage it all, but she is learning to differentiate between what God has and has not called her to do in each new day. Whether running a home business or not, this principle applies to all of us as homemakers as we seek to thrive in our calling and not be distracted or overwhelmed by all the possibilities before us. I know you will be encouraged and learn something from Naomi's story of home.

In this episode, I had the privilege of interviewing Breanna Wakefield, a full-time homemaker and mother of two. Breanna opened up about the strong influence her mom and grandmothers had on her homemaking journey, highlighting the importance of understanding the why and how behind our daily tasks. We delved into the challenges she faced during her pregnancies, including complications related to endometriosis and her battle with postpartum depression. As someone who has personally experienced postpartum depression, I found our conversation incredibly relatable and encouraging. Breanna also generously shared her tips, tricks, and ideas for successful homemaking, leaving me inspired and eager to implement them in my own life. Trust me, you don't want to miss this valuable and heartfelt conversation.

Join me for this In-the-Trenches Homemaker Portrait of author, blogger and full-time homemaking mama, Kristen Howard. We talk about how growing up on a South Dakota cattle ranch shaped her idea of home and family and how God is working to grow Kristen's own home and family that she is making with her husband and 2 (almost 3) kids.  Kristen is passionate about slowing down and enjoying the every day gifts of home. That theme is what much of her writing centers around and it comes through clearly in this fun conversation.
