Dr Adam Busiakiewicz is an art historian, lecturer and lutenist. After completing his BA in History at University College London, Adam eventually went on to undertake a Master's Degree in Decorative and Fine Art at the Sotheby's Institute between 2013-14. His doctoral research focused on the collections and patronage of the Earls and Countesses of Warwick, and has subsequently worked as a Cataloguer in the Old Master Paintings department at Sotheby's where he remains as a Consultant. Laura Peh is the founder and creative director of Cinnamon Art Publishing - an independent publishing house specialising in illustrated non-fiction books for children. She is also an accomplished concert harpist and keen contemporary art collector, focusing on socially-engaged practices from artists of Southeast Asian, Latin American and Middle Eastern heritage. As a publisher and collector, she has spoken on panels and given talks with AWITA, Art&Summit (Singapore), National University of Singapore, Courtauld Institute of Art (London) and Sotheby's Institute of Art (London). She is a laureate of Prestige Singapore's 40 Under 40 2023, and has been featured in media articles including Channel News Asia, The Straits Times, Singapore Global Network, Lianhe Zaobao, Prestige Singapore and Tatler Asia. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Singapore, Laura moved to Paris at the age of 15 to study at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris and graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Royal College of Music in London. After shifting her focus to art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art and obtaining a Masters in Art Business at Sotheby's Institute of Art, London, Laura spent two years working in the art industry in Hong Kong before moving back to Singapore in April 2020 to realise her passion project, Cinnamon Art Publishing.

Paola Lucente is the Director and Curator of Procreate Project, the first UK social enterprise which supports the development of contemporary artists who are also mothers working with different types of art. She holds a BA in Visual art and an MA in Art Management Psychology and has previously worked at the Guggenheim Museum, Marian Goodman Gallery, Scope and Volta art fairs in New York City. Paola was Gallery Manager at the Zabludowicz Collection from 2011 to 2016, where she was responsible for the daily activities of the London gallery, managing events, gallery assistants and the production of art editions.  She was also Head of Exhibitions at Spazio Murat, the very first contemporary art space in Bari, Italy.

Steve Sabella is an established artist and author. Claire Mander is the Director and Curator of theCoLAB, a London based curatorial practice which has operated beyond the white cube since 2011.   She conceives and creates opportunities for women sculptors to use unusual sites as experimental laboratories to realise their most ambitious, far-flung and life-affirming work. She recently transformed a neglected half-acre roof terrace on the roof of Temple tube station into the Artist’s Garden a platform for women artists to make large-scale site responsive interventions. She has curated over 40 mainly site-specific interventions including Sculpture Shock residency/commissioning programme for interventions into subterranean, ambulatory and historic sites in London, Headlands to Headspace landscape art commissions across Morecambe Bay and Sculpture showcasing the work of seventeen Nordic sculptors across three sites in London.  

theCoLAB runs Body and Place drawing residencies in the landscape and is working on the Morecambe Bay Triennial, a residency based series of site responsive commissions across 100 miles of coast in the north west of England.

Claire Mander sits on Westminster’s City of Sculpture panel and is a Board Member of the National Festival of Making and of the artist-led 303 Projects in Lowestoft, Suffolk. She was formerly Deputy Director of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and a Trustee and Chair of the Steering Committee of UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington DC). She is a member of AICA and has published two books and numerous catalogues and has given/chaired many talks about women artists and site-specific commissions including at RCA, The National Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and about Skulpturlandscap Nordland.

She holds an MA (Distinction) from the Courtauld Institute of Art and was a City solicitor.

Betty Briceño is an art market specialist and arts administrator with 10+ years of experience in the international art world, spanning the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. She most recently served as Individual Giving Officer for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, where she was responsible for cultivating and stewarding donor relationships. Her previous professional experiences also include serving as Cultural Affairs & Art in Public Places Coordinator for the City of Miami Beach as well as Studio Manager for Mexico City-based visual artist Pedro Reyes.

Betty holds a Master’s degree in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art, London, a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Universidad Central de Venezuela, and a postgraduate diploma in Museum Studies from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Before concentrating her career in the art world, Betty worked as political advisor for the Embassy of Canada in Venezuela.

She recently moved to Chicago where she lives with her partner, Orchestral Conductor Chad Goodman.

Dee Haughney is Head of Learning at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-sea. She was born in Ireland, studied Photography at TU Dublin, Curatorial Practice at Falmouth University and Asian Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art.  She worked with the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Ireland, Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall and The Photographers’ Gallery, London before joining October Gallery in 2012. As Curator of October Gallery for over eight years, she managed exhibitions, international art fairs and major installations working closely with artists such as El Anatsui, James Barnor and Sokari Douglas Camp. In 2018, she undertook a research trip, cycling the length of Africa from Cairo to Cape Town. Since 2022 she has been Head of Learning at De La Warr Pavilion, one of the largest contemporary arts centres in the southeast. Outside of this she works as an Independent Curator working with artists from Ireland and around the world.

I got to know Jack Davis and his art whilst visiting the renowned seaside artists' colony of St Ives, Cornwall, with my students.  My students were involved in  curating small group exhibitions with Livingstone St Ives Gallery and Jack's tremendous seascapes were selected by several of the groups.

Jack graduated from Falmouth University in 2012 and has been painting professionally ever since. He lives and works near St. Just, painting the rugged West Penwith landscape between Sennen Cove and St. Ives. Jack recently became a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists, has been a tutor at the renowned Newlyn School of Art since 2016, and the Aesthetica Art Prize named him as one of the Future Now 100 contemporary artists 'The West Penwith peninsula is at the end of the line, remote, rugged, and embodied with an ancient primal majesty. Living in such an impressionable environment evokes plenty of inspiration on a daily basis: I am drawn to the raw power of the natural environment and the sublime effect of light. I harness the impulsive energy of my subject matter and create order out of chaos like the landscape I inhabit.' (Jack Davis)

Mikaela Milicuri is a Cypriot-born London-based art advisor who specialises in art sales, collection management and investment portfolio development. Having lived in five countries and eight cities, 'she navigates the international art market with confidence and combines her extensive art knowledge and business skills with meaningful industry connections to help her clients build collections which suit their needs and contribute to their wealth.'

Specialising in Contemporary Art and with an emphasis on Painting, Sculpture, Mixed Media, and New Media Art, she has placed several works of art by emerging and established artists in private and corporate collections. She has also pursued collection management projects in various other sectors, from Impressionism to Surrealism to NFTs. An art collector herself, Mikaela’s advisory services are informed by constant research and a 7-year-long experience in the art world. Prior to founding MAA, Mikaela gained museum experience at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, art fair experience at the 55th edition of the Venice Biennale, and a 5-year experience as a commercial art gallery director and client liaison.

Aryana Khan leads Frieze’s recently launched membership programme, Frieze 91. She currently oversees membership in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul (due to launch in Spring 2023). Aryana has worked in the art market for just under a decade. Prior to Frieze she spent 6 years working at Sotheby’s in London, where she specialised in modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art, managing client relations and business development projects in the region. Her research interests have focused on building scalable and sustainable growth models of new or developing art markets.

Born in London, raised in Kuwait with roots in Iran, Pakistan and the US, Aryana graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Human Biology and Art History, and an M.A. in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.

Milena Berman is originally from San Francisco, California. After studying art history as an undergraduate, she worked at documenta13 in Kassel, Germany in press relations, and then returned home to San Francisco to work for a private photography collection, Pier24. She also worked in commercial and non-profit art galleries before moving to Burgundy in 2013 to work in cultural tourism. For seven years she organized and led travel programs all over the world for donors and boards of trustees of the world’s top cultural institutions such as the Whitney, LACMA, the Serpentine, the Guggenheim and more . Being based in Beaune, Milena was naturally immersed in wine and gastronomy, and found a home in its dynamic wine community. During the pandemic, she went back to study Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art while also working for one of the most revered wineries in Burgundy, Domaine Dujac. Today she works in the realms of wine and culture and is most interested in their intersections, fostering connections between people and places through meaningful experiences. Her company, Hautes Côtes (run together with her partner, wine specialist Loïc Lamy) organizes immersive art and wine programs (both travel and event-based) for professionals in the creative and wine industries as well as for private groups, collectors, cultural institutions, and non-profit organizations.

Lindsay Dewar is the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Analytics, and has been with ArtTactic since 2017. Leading the analytics and research team, she is responsible for developing research and products. She also runs the mentoring and internship programmes. Lindsay regularly speaks about the art market on panels and gives lectures at Kingston University on the MA Art Business course. She also is an active member of the Association of Women in the Arts (AWITA). Her art world experience includes emerging Contemporary art galleries, art advisories and valuation companies, as well as various art research positions. She holds a Masters in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art, and a Masters in Art Market Appraisal from Kingston University.

Her continuing tenure at Stephen Ongpin Fine Art as Gallery Director has given her a range of experiences within the commercial art world, from sales and acquisitions, investment, to collections management, as she has grown with the gallery from intern to director. Prior to Megan's venture into the art world, she worked at Barclays Capital in Fixed Income Sales, honing her skills in research and analysis. Kristy M Chan (b.1997, Hong Kong) lives and works between London and Hong Kong. She received her BFA from Slade School of Fine Art in 2019 and her MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in 2020. Recent solo exhibitions include Binge, The Artist Room in collaboration with Simon Lee Gallery, London (2022), Strong Cookie, Prior Art Space, Berlin (2022) and Totally Not, The Artist Room, London, (2021–2).

Prior to studying Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London, Rhiannon completed her undergraduate degree in Art History at Belmont University. During her time there, she was the recipient of the 2021 Written Research in the Visual Arts Award for her visual essay titled “The Depiction of Global Consumerism and Overconsumption in Art,” a featured keynote speaker at the 2021 Belmont University Research Symposium where she presented an original research project for the Asian Studies session.

Camille is an artist and writer. She received her BA in Fine and Studio Arts from Hampshire College in the US and graduated with a solo show called Ex Omnia Ovum which explored the literary discourse of eggs through a series of plaster sculptures. She holds a Diplom in Sculpture from the Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin, Germany, and exhibited a series of cast plaster sculptures in the degree show Ausgerechnet Freitag der Dreizehnte. Her dissertation explored public art and urban agriculture.

In Berlin, she wrote for the art section of the ex-pat magazine Exberliner and founded a non-profit organisation that provided art scene news and information in English to the growing ex-pat community. After leaving Berlin, she assisted in the historic restoration of the Domaine du Layet chapel and villa in Le Lavandou, France, where she specialised in lime and decorative plaster wall finishes. After most recently receiving a Diploma in Curating from Goldsmiths University in London Camille is furthering her education by currently pursuing an MA in Art Business at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

En Plein Air Editor: Alison Lo

Born in metropolitan Hong Kong, Alison is a globe-trotter and has lived in various international cities including Berlin and London. Prior to pursuing an MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art London, she received her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and Master of Laws degrees from the University of Hong Kong. With over ten years of policy advisory and project management experience in the public sector, including an overseas station in Central and Eastern Europe, she has collaborated with art institutions and individual artists, international organisations, government ministries, private enterprises, academia and the media on projects spanning from art exhibitions, cultural performances, business matching, infrastructural development, and urban regeneration.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, USA, Reese is new to London as of autumn last year. She received a BS in Global Arts, Planning, Design, and Construction from Texas A&M University before starting her MA in Art Logistics at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

In the early millennium Björn Geldhof took a Masters degree in Art History at Leuven University, Belgium.  Since graduating he has been involved in journalism, theatre and art curating including the post of Artistic and Strategic Director at Yarat Contmporary Art Space from 2015-2018.  From 2009 Björn has been involved with PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv where he is Artistic Director.  The Centre closed on 24 February 2022 when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. 143 days later, earlier this week, it reopened with the exhibition  When Faith Moves Mountains which combines works on loan from Antwerp's contemporary art museum M HKA with contemporary Ukrainian art created during the war.  The Pinchuk Foundation also sponsors the Future Generation Art Prize for emerging  international artists as well as the Pinchuk Art Centre Prize for young Ukrainian artists  The prize boards include blue-chip international artists such as Gursky, Hirst, Koons, Murakami and Sir Elton John and the short-listed artists are exhibited at the Venice Biennale.

Dongmin Kim is an Art Business graduate from Sotheby's Institute of Art, class of 2020. She currently works at Artlogic, the leading art technology company that designs and develops tech solutions for art galleries and art fairs, whilst running her own photography business on the weekends.  She recently won the Portrait category for Rugby Photographer of the Year 2022 and is the official club photographer for Richmond FC.  In 2021 Dongmin started working for the Barbarians FC - the world's most famous invitational international touring side. She initially began building her photography career for clients in theatre but eventually found many similarities between the theatrical physicality of rugby and fast-paced musicals and ballets. 

When she's not at Artlogic or hefting her camera around rugby stadiums, she can be found wild-swimming, perusing artisan bakeries and Nigerian art. Originally from South Korea, Dongmin has worked and studied in Munich, Los Angeles, Seoul and London.

Anders Petterson is a leading authority on the art market, with particular focus on the modern and  contemporary  emerging  art  markets.  He is  the  Founder  and  Managing  Director  of ArtTactic Ltd, a London-based art market research and advisory company set up in 2001.  Educated at LSE, Anders' career started in the finance world working for JP Morgan.  In 2000 he set up the web-based art market research firm ArtTactic, which borrows the techniques of the financial world to analyse and predict trends in the contemporary art market.  Since 2005 Anders has been a Consultant Lecturer and dissertation supervisor for the MA Art Business at Sotheby's Institute of Art London, where he focuses on art as an alternative investment asset.

Aparajita Jain is a leading entrepreneur based in New Delhi. She is the Managing Director of Nature Morte Art Limited, India’s leading Contemporary Art Gallery. Her vision has fostered significant growth for the gallery, presenting and amplifying leading South Asian and global artists across two galleries in Delhi and one in Mumbai. Jain’s focus on institutional relationships has led to major museum acquisitions and positioned the gallery’s artists in exhibitions at prestigious museums, biennials, and public sites globally. Jain has also spearheaded and supported ongoing collaborations and partnerships with leading institutions in India and abroad, including KNMA, NMACC, the Jindal Foundation, the Godrej Foundation, Somerset House, and others. 

In 2010, Jain founded The Saat Saath Arts Foundation (SSA), envisioning it as a not-for-profit initiative to foster creative dialogue between Indian artists and the international art world. SSA launched India’s first international Sculpture Park in Jaipur in 2017 as a public-private partnership in collaboration with the Government of Rajasthan, and currently presents a new set of site-specific installations annually. The Foundation also supports an annual grant for leading global curators to conduct research in India. 

Jain is the founder of blockchain-based platform Terrain.art, which partnered with MAP Academy on the first-ever online course on modern and contemporary Indian art. Her dedication to educational initiatives has also included a series co-hosted with Peter Nagy called Art Insider on NDTV. 

Among many accolades, Jain was listed as one among eight influential women in the Indian art world by Artsy, one of 30 influential women in the art world by ELLE magazine, recognised as one of Shethepeople’s 40 over 40 awardees, amongst the 51 art people changing the art world by Observer, and amongst the top 100 creatives in India by Harper's Bazaar. She was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by FICCI FLO in 2019 for her contribution to the field of art and is currently on the advisory board of ICCR. She has recently been inducted onto the Board of Trustees of the International Sculpture Center.

Elsa Åkesson is a 25-year-old New York City based contemporary artist and entrepreneur. As a 2020 Fine Art bachelors graduate from the University of the Arts London and a 2022 Sotheby’s Institute masters graduate in Art Business, Elsa has managed to combine both her passion for painting with that of business.  Today, Elsa focuses her career on the development of her studio practice, and her promising start-up SPONGY BAGS.  This start-up has received Sotheby’s Institute’s recognition on May 18th, 2022, by gaining the Gavel Prize, and has as its core mission - to shift the way we package art, create a sustainable impact.

16 Nicholson Street Gallery is a Glasgow-based, non-profit arts facilitation space run by a curatorial collaborative. The gallery was established in 2016 and all organisation and programming is managed by Isabella Shields, Nell Cardozo, and Aga Paulina Młyńczak.

Jeremy Eckstein is a statistician by training. He started his professional life as a fund manager before joining Sotheby's Auction House in 1979 as Head of Research for the company, with responsibility for monitoring the performance of the British Railways Pension Fund's fine art investment portfolio. An independent consultant in the art market since 1990, Eckstein has done a broad range of commissioned research, carrying out surveys for the art trade and producing a variety of statistics and economic analyses. His publications include a major survey for TEFAF Maastricht on the economic impact of art fairs (2006).

Alicia Livingstone opened her first contemporary art gallery in the Cornish seaside town of Perranporth in 2018, followed by the opening of a second gallery in the seaside artist's colony at St Ives in 2020.  Alice discusses how her art business was impacted by the pandemic and its series of lockdowns, and how she successfully navigated out of it towards opening a third gallery in Clifton, Bristol.

In my introduction to the catalogue of her current exhibition (to 9 April 2022) at JD Malat Gallery Mayfair, I wrote: 'Georgia Dymock is an emerging English artist whose paintings are conceived and born from a combination of digital technology and traditional painterly techniques...... Georgia says that she likes to constantly come close to and then distance herself from the making process by travelling both physically and mentally between the virtual and physical worlds.  This process has become an integral part of the majority of human lives since the start of the pandemic.  Georgia’s paintings are a visual metaphor of what has been happening and continues to happen in the hybrid world of our everyday lives where we distance one another in virtual worlds, sometimes even lose and then movingly rediscover one another in the physical world.  Georgia Dymock’s prophetic paintings help us to find wisdom, understanding and offer a healing mediation of our internal binary oppositions in this world turned upside down.'

In this episode of The Art Business podcast, we discuss the Russian art world and its markets, both in the main centres of Moscow and St Petersburg, as well as in the hinterland.

Dr. Anastasia Pechalova (b. 1992 Moscow) is an art market researcher with a PhD in the History of International Relations. She studied at Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and now lectures at the Department of International Relations. She has an MA and BA in International Relations, and has recently graduated with distinction from the MA in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London.  Her PhD was on the role of expertise in decision-making and politics.

In 2016-2021 Anastasia worked in top-level Russian politics as a speechwriter. In 2020-2021 she worked as a researcher on a project devoted to trend-watching in culture.  This analysed trends in exhibitions, the work of museums and cultural institutions.

In 2021 Anastasia launched Art Barometer, Russia’s first research platform dedicated to monitoring the art market. To date this includes communications with over 300 dealers, collectors and market professionals about their activities in 2021. http://artbarometer.ru/english

Khalil Akar (b.1992) is a Nigerian-Lebanese art director working at the Signature African Art gallery in London. Having been brought up in Lagos, he spent his formative years at his dad’s Signature art gallery studying and learning about art, both traditional and contemporary. He insisted on trying a new field at university to widen his horizon, and earned a Bachelors in Civil Engineering with Sustainability as well as a Masters in Project Management. After five successful years in the construction industry, he decided to return to the art world and setup the Signature African Art gallery in London.  We discuss the history of Signature from its founding in Lagos in 1992 to the opening of the London gallery in 2019 and how the pandemic and BLM has affected it.

Kojo Marfo's work has become familiar to Londoners living and working in the West End over the last two years since appearing in the 'Isolation Mastered' open competition finalists' exhibition at JD Malat Gallery in Mayfair in the summer of 2020 following months of lockdown.  His magnificent portrait paintings caught the eye of important collectors, so much so that Kojo was given a solo show in the summer of 2021, beautifully named 'Dreaming of Identity' (catalogue introduction written by podcast creator David Bellingham. In this podcast we discuss Kojo's influences and his poetic visual responses to the pandemic, his African heritage and contemporary global society and culture.

Conrad studied Pure & Applied Mathematics at Warwick University and his early career was in oil derivatives trading. He took my summer school in Art & Its Markets at Sotheby's Institute of Art and was inspired to become an art consultant and dealer.  In 2014 Conrad launched the Emerging Artist Prize which now has over 2,000 global artists applying with over 5,000 artworks every year.  We talk about the relationships between dance, science, mathematics, music and art as well as (from @00:34:15) Conrad's methods of selecting and marketing his artists. Conrad's instagram site @theartprize has 38.4k followers of over 8,000 posts.

Born into an artist family, Andrei Petru Jecza is the son of the sculptor Peter Jecza. He studied at a German high school in his hometown, Nikolaus Lenau, before earning two separate degrees in Video Art, Photography and History of Fine Art at the West University of Timisoara. He later completed with merit a Masters in Art Business at Sotheby's Institute of Art in London. Currently he runs his own commercial gallery and became more recently the executive director of the Jecza Museum & Triade Foundation. Andrei Jecza is committed to promote and represent mainly Romanian artists who pioneered experimental art forms in the early 1960s and 70s, being also concerned with cutting edge contemporary artists. Through international connections and partnerships, he developed the reputation of the artists he represents, succeeding in placing them in international well-known collections, like the MUMOK Museum of Contemporary Art in Vienna, MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow, Ritter Collection in Germany, Tate Modern in London etc.

Andrei Jecza’s main activity is dedicated to Jecza Gallery, which is trying to become the platform for contemporary art in West Romania.

In 2023 alongside other eight contemporary art galleries Andrei Jecza co-founded RAD Art Fair in Bucharest. For 2024 Jecza Gallery produced an exhibition of Tincuta Marin which opened within the opening week of Venice Biennale in Venice. By the end of 2024 Jecza Gallery will have a second gallery space in Bucharest.

Andrei Jecza’s long term goal is to bring Romanian contemporary art to international acknowledgment.

Tot is best known in the art world for his London contemporary art gallery, Riflemaker which he co-curated with Virginia Damtsa from 2003-2018. His first novel The Story of John Nightly was published in 2017.  We talk about his early days in London as a session drummer and his first experiences with the art world from regular visits to Sotheby's to his time spent studying music at Goldsmiths which coincided with Damien Hirst and other nascent YBAs.  During lockdown Tot recorded his first solo album Frisbee......

JD Malat is a contemporary gallery founded in 2017 and located in Mayfair just down the road from Claridges Hotel and alpha galleries and auction houses including Gagosian, Sadie Cole and Philips.  We talk about London as an art world hub, how galleries develop their artists as well as how they have coped with the pandemic.

Jacqueline is an alumna of the MA in Art Business, Sotheby's Institute of Art London.  Since joining Bonhams in 2017, Jacqueline has been involved in some of the company's most important sales and events, most recently the previously unseen single-owner sale ‘Kusama: The Collection of the late Dr Teruo Hirose’. As Head of Sale, she brought the first mural by Keith Haring to market, achieving a new world record for the artist; she conceived and executed 'Paper Jam' - the department's first curated selling exhibition, and devised the exhibition of the collection of visual arts patron and hip-hop icon Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest.

In addition to her role at Bonhams she also runs an independent auctioneering and fundraising consultancy, serving non-profit institutions and holding auctions at high profile charity galas and benefit events in the United States and Europe. Her clients include international royalty from HRH Prince Charles to Jay-Z and Beyonce, and she has shared the stage with leaders of finance, entertainment, tech and politics. Over the years she has auctioneered to thousands of bidders and raised millions for charity.

Anna Somers-Cocks OBE is one of the best-known names in the international art world.  After her early career as a curator at the V&A Anna went into art journalism and founded The Art Newspaper in 1980.  She is also renowned for her work with the Venice in Peril Fund as well as the Illicit [Antiquities] Trade Advisory Panel.  We talk about the power of art, walking and spirituality, the illicit trade in Italian antiquities and, of course, the prospects for Venice in the light of COP 26.
