Service over Sales: Cultivating an Empathy Selling Mindset with Megan DiPiero29 Jun 202200:38:06

One of the hardest things for a professional photographer to do is raise their prices. But why is that? We get so caught up in charging according to our self-worth instead of charging for the value our clients see in the photography experience. Once you make that mindset shift, selling and scaling becomes so much easier.

In this episode, I chat with coach, speaker, and author Megan DiPeiro about selling with confidence and raising your prices. Megan shares the mindset shifts that have to happen before you can sell your work as a luxury service. She explains why luxe photography is about the experience, not just the final product. And we discuss advice for new photographers and those who want to scale their businesses past six figures.

What’s in this episode:

  • Why Megan loves sales, and how other photographers can learn to love it, too [2:19]
  • What mindset shift has to happen before you can raise your prices and increase your profit [5:51]
  • How to determine if you’re a good fit for your clients and make a deep connection from the get-go [10:45]
  • How to show clients that your work creates a meaningful experience, not just photos [16:54]
  • Why you shouldn’t “charge your worth” but instead “charge for your value” [20:40]
  • How to make the mindset shift towards seeing and marketing your work as a luxe service [23:58]
  • Why you should present your price, “shut your mouth,” and allow your clients to react to the number [33:14]
  • Megan’s advice for new photographers and those who want to scale their businesses [33:55]

3 Steps To Get More Photography Clients That You Love, With Lisa Edwards from Photo Bacon09 Feb 202200:25:57

Lisa has developed a no-fail system for you to get more photography clients that make your heart sing, by simply answering 3 questions about your business.

Introduction (2:30)

Why Photo Bacon? (3:30)

Where should photographers start to get more photography clients that they want? (4:09)
Step 1: What is the benefit of what you bring, and where else do clients spend money on getting this benefit?

Step 2: What can you add to your business to bring more of that benefit to clients?

Step 3: How can you link your marketing verbiage to show how you bridge the gap?

How do you say yes to more of what you love, and no to what you don’t? (14:30)
I started cutting down on the sessions I didn’t love, and raising the prices for them. That way I didn’t have to quit cold turkey, and I was still making money from them, and I could focus on filling the gaps and getting more photography clients doing sessions I love. Eventually I was able to completely drop the sessions I didn’t love.

What to do when you’re struggling to get inquiries? (16:58)
Stop thinking of yourself as just a photographer. Rather think of yourself as a person who brings joy with your photography. Create marketing that is emotional.

How do you price yourself to create a profit? (18:06)
Confidence is key. You have to believe in the value that you bring. Then calculate the amount of money you need to make from each session.

What do you wish more photographers knew?  (20:46)
Photography doesn’t define you. Rather identify who you are as a person and know you can show that value in many ways, not just as a photographer.

Lightning Round! (22:49)

What are you artistically curious about? (24:56)
I’m taking historic photos and melding them with current photos.

The Photography Lessons That Shaped My Life and My Business, With Kelly Brown02 Feb 202200:53:26

Kelly reflects on a 17-year career as a newborn photographer and educator, and shares the photography lessons (and life lessons!) she has learned along the way.

How did you find your love for photography? (4:47)
I had to take photos around construction sites for my job as a PA, and realized I had a good eye for lines and composition. When my daughter was born, I wanted to stay home with her, and I started taking photography lessons, and within 6 months I had paying clients.

How did you find your way into education? (6:57)
As I was photographing more and more newborns, people saw my work, and wanted to know how to do it. There was a contest for potential teachers at CreativeLive that I was encouraged to enter, and I made it to the final 6. Before I could do the presentation in the final round though, I was approached by them to present newborn photography lessons in a 3-day recorded session.

How do you see your own value? (11:35)
I reached a low point in my business, where I had to sit down and write down what was and wasn’t working for me. In many ways it came down to my inability to get paid. I compared what it cost me in money and time to run my business and be away from my family I had to focus on getting paid for the time I was putting into it, compared to having a regular job.

How do you balance the passion for your client work and your personal work? (23:08)
Creating a structure for your business is the key. Knowing how much money you have to earn to cover your CODB and pay yourself a salary means you can schedule the clients to achieve that, and then structure time around that for your personal projects, without feeling guilty about it.

Advice for entering photography contests? (26:44)
A judging room is probably the best classroom you can be in, as judges have a list of topics they will evaluate. Being this thorough means you get amazing feedback. Lower marks will catapult your skill level if you see the feedback as photography lessons and go back to try and improve in those areas specifically.

Where do you find your inspiration? (30:50)
I’m inspired by light, by shape, by form – not just in photography but in any artform.

What is your dream session? (34:51)
A session where I can freely create, and that delights me. I write down all the ideas I have in my phone, and pull ideas from there all the time.

Which photography lessons do you wish more photographers knew? (37:06)
For experienced photographer: the value of what it is that they are doing. For new photographers, I wish they would be more patient with themselves and not compare themselves to others.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve been given? (40:39)
Being asked WHY I am doing this. It made me question my reasons and focusing more on my own business.

What are you artistically curious about? (51:39)
Installation art

Creating Photography Packages That Feed Your Artistic Soul (and Your Wallet!) with Maria Arellano26 Jan 202200:50:28

Today Maria shares her philosophy on creating photography packages that ensures her business is profitable, her clients feel pampered and her artistic soul is fulfilled.

Introduction (3:32)

Tips on being organized (5:52)
I have ADHD, so being organized is really hard. I recommend the book “The One Thing”. I try to remember that just because something is urgent, doesn’t mean it’s a priority. I choose one theme for a day: “Marketing Mondays”, “Finance Fridays”, etc. I also put non-negotiables onto my schedule first.

How have you structured your fine art photography packages to be both profitable and rewarding? (16:40)
Editing - I started physically setting a timer to limit the time spent editing each image. I also started editing from further away and not zooming in so close, rather focusing on impact.

I also structured my photography packages so I could charge well and have less clients, and give each client more quality time. I know exactly what my max clients per months are.

How many images do you provide? (25:43)
20.
My standard photography package includes an 8x8 album for $1800, and then digitals for $700 more. You can overdeliver in other ways than just providing more photos. You can perfectly prepare your clients for their sessions by creating structures in your business to best serve them. I create regular videos to keep the excitement levels up. It’s not about the number of pictures they get. There are clients out there who want a one-stop shop.

How do you draw inspiration when you’re feeling low? (32:47)
When I am planning the session with clients, I ask them to write down how they want to feel when they see their images. I draw inspiration and motivation from their answers and strive to create that for them. I always try to create at least one “goddess image” or a set of images I do just for myself.

What is your process when you have a new idea? (39:03)
I get a lot of ideas from music videos. These artists can take the story of a whole movie into a 3-minute video. I then see how I can take that video and translate it into one image, one photo that tells the whole story. I keep idea lists in Pinterest and on Youtube, and find that those ideas influence the end products I deliver.

Lightning Round! (42:02)

What are you artistically curious about? (47:48)
I want to make documentaries about the women that I photograph and how it changes how they see themselves.

The Creative's Roadmap: Creating a Vision For Your Life and Your Business with Lisa DiGeso19 Jan 202200:09:10

You are the hero of your own story.

In today’s very special 100th episode we’re gonna be talking about creating a vision for your business and for your life.  It has almost nothing to do with photography specifically but everything to do with you and your mindset.

We often forget we have the power over what we let into our lives, and what we tolerate.   We have the opportunity to design how we spend our days, who we spend time with, how we react to situations, how we show up in life.

We often forget we truly have the power to change things

Today we chat about creating a vision for your business and life.  There’s a saying that goes you can’t get to where you want to go unless you have a roadmap to get there.

Everyone has a very different definition of success.  In this interactive episode, I’m going to have you pause it and write down (or copy below) the question, and then take the time to answer it for yourself.  The goal is that by the end of this episode you will have a very solid vision and why that will help propel you through the next year.

Let's dive in :)

What part of my business and my life is really working for me right now?
What part of my business and my life is not working for me right now?
Where in my life am I leaking energy?
Where are the areas in my life that are bringing me joy?
What does success look like for me?
Where in my business or my life am I self-sabotaging?
How am I going to notice and be aware I am self-sabotaging and what am I going to do about it?
What could I do that could make every week amazing ?
What would my best year look like?
What is my big why? (my reason for having my photography business or the reasons I want to achieve my goals?)

I'm hoping that diving deeply into yourself and asking yourself some deep questions, will help you create that road map so you know exactly where you want to go.

Take The Leap – Submitting Your Images for Critique While Prioritizing Newborn Safety – with Cara and Steph from APNPI12 Jan 202200:43:07

Newborn safety should never be compromised for the sake of a pose. Cara and Steph talk about keeping your littlest clients safe while still challenging yourself as a creative newborn photographer.

Introduction (3:36)

What is APNPI? (6:45)
We started APNPI because there was very little training available specific to newborn photography. Our cornerstone is newborn safety and we now support photographers to be safe, to be skilled and work on their businesses.

How to get started with APNPI and what can you expect from membership? (9:43)
Our safety course is the first thing you gain access to, and once you pass the evaluation, it will open the pathway to learning. You submit images for review to ensure you meet the evaluation criteria, and then later you can apply for accreditation if you have an above average skill level in a certain aspect of newborn photography. You can also get a designation via merits received through courses, contests, etc.

Why is it important to submit your work for review? (16:13)
You have an emotional connection to your work, and you have to find a way to separate yourself from it. It is your artwork, but it isn’t you. You cannot process critique if you’re so personally attached to it. There is truth in every critique, and whether you accept all or some of it, it will push you to become better, whether you want to or not.

Mistakes people make when submitting images for review (22:04)
Lack of cohesiveness and lighting errors.

Any success stories you’d like to share? (23:53)
We had a student who was struggling to pass the evaluation. She revealed that she had a degenerative vision condition that was making it hard to see errors in lighting, but once we took extra time to review this with her more intensively, it was a lightbulb moment for her.

What advice do you have for beginners to be educated in newborn safety? (27:28)
Take a newborn safety course from practitioners who work in pediatrics and have expertise with newborns. Also, listen to science and their concerns. Know that sometimes the damage that you can cause is not something you can see, or that happens right at or after a newborn session. Don’t let your ego or desire to master a pose get in the way of newborn safety.

What is the one piece of advice for something starting with newborn photography (35:10)
Identify your business goals – decide what income you want to earn, and how many hours you want to work, and then decide on your business model.
Also, experiment and have fun and create your own look.

Defining Success and Setting Goals for Your Business (and Yourself!) with Jai Long05 Jan 202200:41:53

Setting goals – clear and challenging ones – can only happen after you have clearly defined what success means to you. And that can be negatively influenced by your own limiting beliefs. Business coach Jai Long, touches on some of obstacles creatives face when shaping their lives and businesses.

Explain your approach of being both successful and having an aligned mindset (2:54)
Neither hustling nor being passive are good for your business. Hustling is just like running on a treadmill – going faster still won’t get you anywhere. You have to get off and walk to success.

How do you manage you mind when you tend to self-sabotage (4:38)
Identify the feelings you have, and then dissect why you are feeling that way. Control the inputs in your life, by surrounding yourself with positive people, and limiting negativity, so you can better serve your client with the output you create.

What is a limiting belief, especially when setting goals? (7:22)
It is a belief that will stop our growth and our progress. The easiest way to overcome this is to find a way to break through that ceiling and prove to yourself that something is possible.

Has your enneagram influenced the way you do business? (12:49)
I ask my employees to do theirs, because that way I know how to manage them best, and what motivates them.

Tell me about the 6-Figure Business Map (16:57)
I teach this course to give creatives a cheat sheet to applying all the superpowers they already have as creatives in a way to make their business thrive. I teach them to lean more into the things they can do well because they can outsource the things they can’t.

Do you have a success story to share? (25:25)

What does success mean to you? (28:30)
The willingness to do and to fail.

How do I manage overwhelm when I have to make changes to my business? (31:53)
Overwhelm is the killer of all dreams. Start by setting goals and writing them down, then work backwards. But only one thing at a time. For every little thing you do, ask whether it brings you closer to the goal.

How do you let yourself enjoy multiple businesses or passions? (36:32)
If business is as creative as we think, then why can’t we be creative with what we do? It’s naïve to just choose one thing and think we will be creatively fulfilled for the rest of our lives. A ship doesn’t sink just because you aren’t on it – you can own multiple ships.

Lightning Round! (38:15)

What are you creatively curious about? (40:28)
I am going to be writing a book.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Effective and Authentic Social Media Strategies for Your Photography Business - with Tyler McCall13 Dec 202100:50:30

If you are someone who struggles on how to make social media work FOR your business...vs sucking you into a blackhole of endless scrolling, and you need a little permission to show up as yourself, this episode with Tyler McCall is for you!

How can we manage our social media authentically?

It takes a different approach. I call it the creator mentality versus the consumer mentality.  Get into the creator vibe mentality of "I'm using these platforms, to find my dream customers, connect with people, build community, have conversations, using the foundation of it is creating really great content.  It needs to be the right content for your audience at the right time. And doing that consistently is what's important.

How do we take a social media Sabbatical?

You have to get your nose out of your phone and the air pods out and be present.  Even if you just delete the apps from your phone for the weekend, or, the holidays.  Just practice that presence and look for opportunities where you can tell a story or an experience you could elaborate on that is inspiring and you can share with the world.  You can still have content going up multiple times a week on social media, just use a scheduler and repurposed content.

How do we know whose advice to take on running an online business?

Ask yourself, am I making these decisions on my own, or am I letting someone else make these decisions for me?  I think there's a difference between seeking out information and a proven process or system that you can implement in your own business or getting coaching from someone who has a proven track record and can help get you where you want to go. That's very different than being in an environment where it really seeds a lot of self-doubt about what you're doing

How can you reignite an Instagram profile?

It's really important to think about who our ideal follower is and what kind of content they want from you.  Then we can start creating content that is personal and connects with other individuals and provides some kind of value and helps them in some way.  It is either educational, inspirational, aspirational, beautiful or entertaining.  When we think about why someone would follow us and then what they want to get out of following us, then we can let that start to influence our content strategy.

The Secrets Behind a Successful Husband and Wife Photography Team with Christina Merez03 Nov 202100:40:24

Newborn photographer Christina Merez shares how her and husband Carlos make it work as a husband and wife photography team. From roles to boundaries to styles – there is a lot to unpack about this special dynamic.

Introduction (2:27)

How did you and Carlos become a husband and wife photography team? (3:02)
Carlos was looking for a new job, and when we added up all the costs of daycare, etc. it was actually expensive for him to go back to work, so I suggested he help with my photography.

What are your roles in the job? (4:19)
We determined that I was best at shooting, and he is amazing at assisting on set, putting babies into poses, and he also does all the editing.

How did you figure out editing that fits both your styles? (7:07)
I sat down and explained my creative vision to him until we have now developed a unique style.

Do you have business boundaries in a husband and wife photography team? (9:07)
Yes, we have been able to keep things separate. We were older when we met, so as a couple we have been able to communicate better and stay in our roles in the business.

What is your client workflow (12:33)
We used to have a prep guide, but found that people don’t read it. So now we focus on having a phone call and just letting people know what to expect the day of the session.

How long did it take for you to be confident in shooting newborns? (15:43)
About 3 years to feel good about our work. Once you have sessions consistently, that is when you learn the most, because you learn something at every session.

What is your go-to tip to get toddlers to cooperate in newborn sessions? (18:59)
I ask them to help me with small things and they start realizing that they are the big brother/sister and will be more inclined to help with baby too.

Do you have a client closet? (22:14)
Yes, we have dresses for new and expecting moms. They love that they don’t have to go shopping and everything they need is at the studio.

What is your favourite newborn pose? (24:36)
We are well known for our bowl shots, but it’s limited. On their back on the beanbag is my favourite because I can get so many different looks from it.

What do you do when baby gets fussy? (26:40)
Wrap! You can still get variety by showing legs and arms.

Do you have any funny stories from a session? (28:29)

What is your business selling structure? (29:29)
We do full IPS with newborns, but do mainly digitals for sitters with the option to purchase print products.

What do you wish you knew starting out? (32:10)
Don’t buy everything you see! Buy the right thing, not the cheapest.

Speed Round (34:44)

What do you wish more photographers knew? (37:08)
As long as you don’t quit, and you keep practicing, and you invest in education, you will get better and busier.

What are you artistically curious about? (38:51)
Lighting

Asked & Answered: How to capture authentic photos of your own children with Lindsey Shedd27 Oct 202100:03:44

Asked from Caroline is Chicago

Hi Lisa!

My biggest struggle is photographing my own kids.  They want to just ham it up for the camera, make silly faces or run at me or climb all over me.  They literally don't forget that I am there.  What advice do you have that I can create connection and mood when they just want to be goofy and act up for the camera?

Photography Marketing … From The Heart with Julie Christie20 Oct 202100:48:18

Too many people think that creative entrepreneurs have to struggle with photography marketing. Julie Christie dispels that notion with thought-provoking, actionable tips to align your photography marketing and business processes with your own heart and personality.

Introduction (2:25)

How do you realize your worth as a photographer? (4:15)
I don’t like the saying “Charge what you’re worth”. Attaching your photography price to your self worth can be messy. The work we do is not priceless – it has a value, and it can change over time. Dig really deep into your money blocks, understand them, then put time in to minimize them.

How to price yourself profitably right from the start? (10:40)
Understand positioning – what it is about you or your brand that is a deal clincher for your ideal client? If you can think how you are better, it will help you psychologically put a good price on it. Also remember that it’s not about price – it’s about profit. You can charge a low price, but then don’t give away too much.

What are the 3 biggest photography marketing tips that you can implement right away? (21:11)
1. Nurture the relationships you already have. Give your clients an amazing customer experience.
2. Have and use an email list
3. Create and use key content

How do you make the business side of photography enjoyable? (30:42)
It happens when you create a business that aligns completely with your personality. When you start out, take a few personality tests and become really self-aware, and then build a business for YOUR personality.

Where do you start creating a photography marketing campaign? (34:48)
People will need to go on a journey and have touch points with you before they book you, so visibility is so important, and campaigns will give that buzz around your business. Decide what you want to achieve in the next quarter, build a campaign around that and focus all your energy on that one campaign.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your business? (41:57)
Simplicity – to not over-complicate things.

Speed Round! (43:27)

What are you artistically curious about? (46:16)
I’m always curious about people.

Balancing Motherhood and Your Photography Business with Ashley Freehan13 Oct 202100:31:47

You don’t have to choose between being a good mother or a good business owner. Ashley shares strategies on balancing motherhood while still running a profitable and sustainable photography business.

Introduction (2:15)

What is the key to avoiding burnout? (2:56)
Self-care. Everyone needs some blank space, time for just you. It has to be something you intentionally seek, it won’t happen automatically.

Advice on handling distractions (7:37)
Give your kids the 4 things they need ahead of time, and they will give you the time you need. 1.     A present and hands-on mom
2.     Positive attention
3.     Positive control
4.     Boundaries and routines

How do you handle mom-guilt when balancing motherhood and your business? (13:18)
First acknowledge the guilt. Then identify the priority in that moment. Then check the guilt (and whether it is true) against the priority. Lastly, replace the guilt with thankfulness. Give yourself the same advice you would give to a friend.

How do you embrace the season you’re in and stay in your lane? (18:13)
“If you’re not content where you are right now, you’re not going to be content where you’re going.” Also, instead of being jealous of where someone else is in their journey, use it as inspiration and fuel to energize yourself.

How do you get your work done while having kids home for extended times? (23:06)
Having systems and routines will not stifle your creativity – it will create the space and time for you to be more creative. Balancing motherhood and business means that I have to do time blocking for work, family and personal.

What do wish you knew starting out? (26:52)
You have to love business more than photography. You have to invest in yourself before you believe in yourself.

Earn More Without Working More – The Simple Sales System with Annemie Tonken06 Oct 202100:46:38

A good system in your photography business is one that allows you to maximize your profits while making the best use of your time and talents. Enter: the Simple Sales System, a revolutionary way to run a profitable, sustainable business that you love.

Introduction (2:25)

What is the #1 mistake people make when creating systems? (3:46)
People over-complicate what a system is. A system is simply a repeatable, efficient workflow. The better you get at systems, the less thinking you have to do, you make fewer mistakes and you give a more consistent experience to your client.

How do you find time for organization? (6:19)
There is a misconception that you have to do everything yourself. Someone else may be able to do a task faster, more efficiently, and with less mistakes, which can make it cheaper than doing it yourself. Lean into the things you are good at, and outsource and automate the rest.

How did you overcome the mindset of “to earn more you have to work more”? (9:33)
After my divorce, I had to provide for my family,  and I had to make more money without spending more time. So I mapped out the IPS process and figured out which aspects made it work so well, and then figured out how to do those things in an automated or remote way. That is how the Simple Sales System was born.

With your Simple Sales System, do people just order prints and albums online? (17:34)
Pic-time approached me when they saw I was making more money using their gallery software than their other family photographers. I shared my system with them and they then created a marketing automation based on it. So now the system to order products is really user-friendly and presented in a beautiful way.

How do you keep yourself from burning out as a photographer? (22:55)
The little things that need to get done take up so much of your time, but those are not the things that make your business great, like connection with clients, or the photos you make. Always be on the lookout for the next thing you can get off your plate.

How do you stay on track with systems you create? (25:39)
First and foremost, get a CRM.

How do you move past not knowing your numbers and creating a business you can be proud of? (28:35)
Give yourself grace – there are many businesses out there at this stage. But knowing your numbers will enable you to make decisions that make your business successful.

Other than the Simple Sales System, you also teach “Revenue on Repeat”. Tell us more. (32:09)
I found myself in a situation where I couldn’t work for a few months, and I needed to stabilize my income. I realized that a membership model where people pay a monthly fee towards their session was beneficial for both me and my client.

Do you have any success stories to share? (38:18)

The Importance Of Checking In With Your Inner Child, with Fine Art Photographer Tara Mapes28 Sep 202100:45:41

Growing up in nature with a mom who inspired and nurtured her creativity, Tara has developed a signature style as a fine art photographer that has clients clamouring for her art.

Introduction (3:05)

How did you become a fine art photographer? (7:50

Were your children your inspiration? (12:40)
Not specifically. My son is not the path to my creativity – he just opened the door to it.

What is your process for new ideas? (16:28)
I write out my shoot idea, then build on that with props, accessories and location scouting. I do a dry run first so  I’m not under pressure at the shoot.

How do you attract clients who wants quality of art over quantity ? (19:45)
I don’t offer any traditional photos sessions like family sessions in the park or seniors or weddings.  When people come to me, they want a piece of art, not a package.

Where do you source your fine art outfits? (24:56)
Sometimes I work with designers on custom outfits, and sometimes I buy on Amazon, or I buy themed couture.

What do you do with the outfits once you are done? (27:10)
I keep them in my storage units.

Tell us about your ancestry art (30:10)
They are aimed at men mainly because of the strong lighting, and I base the styling on their heritage.

How many images do you include? (32:22)
5 images for fine art, and 1 for composites.

Do you have a set process for every client? (32:46)
Yes, they reach out with their theme. Then I will style clothes, then accessories, then the location.

Where is you your dream shoot? (34:34)
Hollywood, because they have all the costumes and locations already there.

How much personal work do you do? (36:14)
About every 2 months.

What do you wish you knew when you started out ? (40:26)
Everything I have been through allows me to identify with the people that I teach today. I wouldn’t change anything, as it would change who I am today.

Asked & Answered: Ways to tell when it's time to fire a client with Sarah Gupta22 Sep 202100:06:25

Asked from Emily in Austin

Dear Lisa
At what point do you call it quits on a client?  This client booked a session with me when I very first started.  She is very short and delayed with correspondence.  She isn't excited about this session at all, which in turn isn't making me excited.  All she has told me is that she wants a photo of the men on her husband's side and that they are very hard to photograph and hate pictures.

We had to reschedule once due to weather, and I've been grasping at straws trying to get answers out of her for what else she wants from this and it's been really hard.  The session is coming up yet she hasn't responded yet, even though I've asked twice now. .  She was a previous client when my prices were very very cheap and I'm feeling like she doesn't value my time or my talent as a more advanced photographer.  What would you do in this situation?
