What a way to wrap up 2024! Nothing like having a conversation with a member of the 1986 Miracle Mets and a WORLD SERIES CHAMPION.
WALLY BACKMAN is our guest on this episode of The Approach Shot and yes, he was part of the team that broke the Red Sox faithful's hearts. He too, watched Mookie Wilson's ball go under Bill Buckner's glove, but has a different perspective on that play and others.
He also gave back so much to the game he loves by managing in the Minor Leagues and was able to impart wisdom and fire in his players. That love and fire also exist in his golf game and we enjoyed every second of our conversation with WALLY BACKMAN!

To a baseball purist, Pete LaCock was a dangerous hitter. His eye, his plate discpline and his ability to come through in the clutch allowed him to have a terrific 9 year MLB career before playing in Japan. But it's his love for the game, his rivalry with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, and his famous family (and their friends) that make this such an endearing conversation with a great storyteller.

Carl Lee III was not heavily recruited out of high school by D1 teams. He accepted an offer from Marshall University in Huntington WVa. He was from Charleston WVa so Marshall was the obvious choice. He won a total of 8 games in his 4 years there. He was drafted in the 7th round by the Vikings. He was told he was too small, too slow to make it in the NFL. He was cut before his rookie year started, but was brought back in 4 days because of an injury to the player above him on the depth chart. 12 years later Carl is recognized as one of the 50 greatest Minnesota Vikings of ALL TIME! Carl’s is a wonderful story on what a person can accomplish if they don’t believe the naysayers. And Carl has some terrific insights into his golf game too. J Marc Chambers is a comedian and a golfer. He has friends that are comedians and golfers. They decided to create a business that incorporates both golf and comedy. Add to those two the element of fundraising and you have their business, Hole Hecklers. J Marc and his friends will come out to your golf outing, charity scramble, even a client appreciation day, and set up shop on a par 3 hole. Unless they are paid by the golfers (to raise funds for the charity involved with the golf outing) they will heckle the golfers as they try to tee off. It is impossible to hit a good shot while you are laughing your ass off. Trust us, we’ve tried. You can also pay extra to get your buddy heckled mercilessly. It’s fun. It’s funny. And it’s a great way to raise some money on the golf course for a worthwhile cause. It also makes for one helluva funny hour of gold podcast.
