Rewilding's Rising Wave of New Careers and Possibilities with James Shooter Part 2

Saison 3 · Épisode 2

lundi 8 juin 2026Durée 29:54

James Shooter is a nature photographer, filmmaker, and podcaster based in Scotland’s beautiful Cairngorms National Park. Immersed in the world of rewilding, James focuses on telling hopeful environmental stories and showing how nature can recover when people work with it rather than against it.

For a decade he's worked with the rewilding charity Scotland: The Big Picture as a visual storyteller and field guide. Recently, he and his family spent eighteen months traveling across Europe, visiting rewilding projects in eighteen countries and turning those experiences into the acclaimed The Rewild Podcast.

In this conversation, James shares the surprising lessons he gathered from rewilders in places like Bulgaria, Sweden, and Croatia, and why he believes the future of rewilding around the world may be far more hopeful than most people realize.

Helping Grizzly Bears Get Where They Want to Go with Dr. Sarah Sells: Montana C.R.U.

Saison 1 · Épisode 4

mardi 21 mai 2024Durée 51:07

Using cutting-edge mapping technology and tiny, digital grizzlies programmed to behave like real ones, bear specialist Dr. Sarah Sells and her team are able to make unprecedented predictions for the species. They can forecast the migration routes that expanding populations of grizzly bears will take and where they are likely to make their new homes. She and her team at the Montana Cooperative Research Unit (C.R.U) are conducting research that directly informs wildlife management decisions and improves the chances that grizzlies can continue returning to their former home ranges where they have been absent for more than one hundred years.

Ongoing Wins for Nature with Laly Lichtenfeld & Neovitus Sianga: African People & Wildlife

Saison 1 · Épisode 3

mardi 7 mai 2024Durée 43:30

Laly Lichtenfeld and Neovitus Sianga’s work at African People and Wildlife (AP&W) centers on the linkages between people, wildlife and the diverse ecosystems they call home. For decades surrounding their base of operations in Tanzania, there have been intense and seemingly intractable conflicts between wildlife and people. Since 2005 AP&W has been making impressive progress on mitigating these conflicts with simple, ingenious solutions that can be implemented by livestock managers and whole communities on their own. Importantly, they support the use of these solutions through a multitude of ongoing programs that include youth environmental education, women-owned business ventures, continuous monitoring and evaluation, and infrastructure such as their now famous 'living wall enclosures' to protect livestock from predators. As a result, their methodology and values-based approach is being replicated across Africa where others seek similarly effective solutions to help nature and  humans coexist.

Celebrating America’s Newest Large-Scale Marine Sanctuary: Violet Sage Walker: Northern Chumash Tribal Leader.

Saison 2 · Épisode 12

mercredi 9 juillet 2025Durée 49:29

Designated in December 2024, the new Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary is America’s 17th national marine sanctuary, the sixth off the U.S. West Coast, and is one of the largest in the National Marine Sanctuary System. The success of the 20 year effort was due to tenacious leadership by numerous indigenous tribes, including a key leadership role taken by Violet Sage Walker, the tribal chair of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council.

The sanctuary encompasses 4,543 square miles of Central California’s beautiful coastal and ocean waters, providing protection to nationally significant natural, cultural, and historical resources while bringing new opportunities for research, community engagement, and education and outreach activities. The project is demonstrating a balanced effort to restore the extraordinary marine biodiversity--some of which has been lost only in the past 40 years or so---with benefits to people such as the local indigenous fishing industry that has witnessed precipitous declines in salmon populations in recent times.
