This month, I'm joined by friend and new voice to the show, Ashely Miami, to celebrate all things Dirty Pair, as the TV anime recently celebrated it's 40th Anniversary! We'll go through the franchise's history, Kei & Yuri's origins, and just why--40 years later--we still love the series. And yes, we will answer your burning questions on who we think is "best girl", and even our opinions on the cursed Kickstarter. Also in this episode: How we'd reboot the series, getting a little personal, and....anime tattoos?!

This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, I'm revisiting one of Tezuka's TV films in a brand new way: New anime publisher SkySet Entertainment has released the 80s sci-fi fantasy film A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose on bluray in America--and they created a full English dub for it! So what better time to both revisit this somewhat obscure classic to see if I still enjoy it, AND to see how the new English dub sounds. How does anime Spock sound in English? Well, let's find out!

Author Erica Victoria Espejo has not only been an anime fan since the 90s, she's been going to cons & writing about it for over 20 years! And now, she's written a book called The Fangirl Diaries: Finding Community in Anime Fandom of the 90s & 00s, chronicling early anime fandom and cosplay through her lived experience in it while growing up as a queer, femme Asian. Listen in as we discuss daring to share stories of cringey youth, the evolution of fandom, cosplay, and anime conventions, and what it was like to write a book about it all.

This month, I'm joined by returning champion Tricia to check out the brand new Mappa-animated Rose of Versailles anime film on Netflix. Released a whopping 46 years after it's first anime adaptation (and a musical to boot?!), what do we, as Rose of Versailles fans, think of this new vision of Oscar & company? Well...it definitely surprised us, alright, but it also left us asking quite a lot of questions. Listen in as we discuss what we thought worked, what we thought didn't, and answer your burning questions--like what other anime & manga should get musicals!

This month, we’re returning to my Creative Conversations series! In these episodes, I talk to people in various creative fields making things today who were greatly inspired by anime & manga, and are using that inspiration today to make their own cool things. This time, we’re talking to Eisner-Nominated comic artist, writer, colorist, and occasional cosplayer Sarah Myer (They/Them)! We discuss how growing up loving cartoons & anime not only had a big impact on their life, but how fandom was a major plot point in their incredible auto-biographical graphic novel Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story. We also talk about early fandom memories, cosplay, how both TMNT and Evangelion have always been there for them, and answering your questions!

Just a FEW of Sarah's older anime & manga recommendations (listen to the ep for their complete list!):

Last month was Anime Frontier 2024, one of my favorite cons to attend in recent years--so why not share my experience with all of you?! That's right, this month, I'm reporting in on everything I did at Anime Frontier: from visiting the Gundam Base, to checking out Dark Horse's Manga Panel, and even getting to interview the new English dub voice actor of Ryoga Hibiki for Mappa's new Ranma 1/2 anime on Netflix: Damien Haas! I not only get to ask what he thinks of the Eternal Lost Boy, but what he thinks one of his most popular other roles might think of a certain little cursed pig.....You'll have to listen in to learn yourself!

It's Halloween season once again, so for this month's ReView episode, let's revisit a more unconventional pick for a Halloween movie night: the 1994 anime OVA adaptation of Hideyuki Kikuchi's Darkside Blues! Will this dystopian cybergoth thriller make for some great vibes, or is it just not "all that jazz"? Let's revisit it and find out!

Recently, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie celebrated it's 30th anniversary! And along with the current fighting game renascence we've been seeing lately, what better time to talk about one of THE best video game adaptations ever made? So of course, I had to recruit returning champion & friend of the show Casey (aka MinovskyArticle) to talk about how this movie stands the test of time, even now. Also in this ep: the movie's surprisingly troubled production, 90s industrial music, epic bromances, and of course: answering your questions. HADOKEN!

For June, I'm discussing one of my favorite shoujo manga: CLAMP's Tokyo Babylon! So of course, I had to recruit Lucy & Robin of the wonderful CLAMPcast in Wonderland to help me do an extra long deep dive of this bold & stylish, supernatural queer cult classic: What makes it so special, why it being "problematic" is actually important, how it's themes & story elements are still relevant over 30 years later, and most importantly: THE FASHION! This month, while I dream of the upcoming Dirty Pair bluray set, let's revisit some other space adventuring troublemakers from the same universe! That's right, it's 1983's Crusher Joe: The Movie! But will this movie crush it, or will it crush my heart? Ok, ok...lets drop the puns and check it out in this month's rewatch.

This year, Go Nagai's magical super heroine turned 50 years old! So what better time to have an episode in her honor? And joining me to talk all about her is No. 1 English-speaking Cutie Honey Fan (who has worked on many official American Cutie Honey releases!), Salvatore (aka @retrosofa)! We discuss not only the history of the franchise, but how even though Honey is a pulpy, sexy, and sometimes goofy Magical Girl originally created for boys, she influenced the Magical Girl genre in all sorts of ways we're still seeing today! Also in this episode: the decades-long argument of if Honey even counts as a magical girl, the appeal of giant Go Nagai monster women, and answering all your questions in this extra-long episode!

The Saturday Anime series is back! These are episodes where we talk about anime that aired on the Saturday Anime block of Sci-Fi Channel back in the 90s on US Cable TV. This month, MDi is back to talk with me about a title that was once one of Pioneer Anime’s original flagship titles in the US, but has since kind of become forgotten---Green Legend Ran! Listen as we revisit this title to see if this environmental sci-fi fantasy OAV-edited-to-movie-for-Sci-Fi-Channel’s-broadcast still holds up, having to deal with the infamous WordFit System, and how this title is connected to....Snakes on a Plane??? In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!

Then the second half is Spoiler Talk, for all of you who’re already familiar with the series! Not only is June the 50th Anniversary of Go Nagai’s manga, but in the US June is also Pride Month! And at the request of AJ (who won the choice of a full podcast episode topic in my ANP Says Trans Rights raffle), we’re talking all about the iconic queer-coded action-horror classic Devilman! Go Nagai superfan Salvatore is back with me this month to talk all about the original 70s manga, TV series, AND the 80s/90s OVA series. We discuss differences between them, what we love & maybe not love so much about each version, and the absolutely MASSIVE influence Go Nagai’s work has had over manga & anime in the last 50 years in this fun, extra-long episode!

Osamu Tezuka’s Unico is well-loved around the world, and many older anime fans’ first exposure to anime as kids. Now, we’re getting a brand new, internationally collaborated manga called Unico: Awakening, for both fans of the original and new fans alike! And this month on the podcast, I’m interviewing the author of this new Unico adventure, Samuel Sattin! Listen as we discuss the plot of this new Unico manga as well as: Samuel’s anime origin story, how he worked with both Tezuka Productions and Japanese artist team Gurihiru, what makes Unico so special, and why Unico’s kitty-cat friend has a new name.

I’m finally back after my brief hiatus with a brand-new episode! And this month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. With Netflix’s new BASTARD!! anime just around the corner, what better time to revisit the original OVA that came out in the 90s? Grab your swords and your bikini armor and lets see if this one still holds up!

This month’s Guest Episode is a manga-centric one! I talked all about the wild, weird, and sometimes whacky world of the classic sci-fi body horror manga Parasyte with the Manga Mavericks Podcast, along with fellow guest Jason Thompson! Listen as we chat about what we love about it, Iwaaki’s strengths and weaknesses as a manga artist, and what kinda weird things WE’D do if we had strange alien parasite powers! Enjoy!

Valentine’s Day may be over, but this month on the podcast, we’re stealing hearts with some Cat’s Eye conversation with the Zannen, Canada podcast! Host Jesse, additional guest Chris, and myself talk about our history with the series, it’s ties to City Hunter, and I learn about it’s release in France & airing on TV in Canada! Only mild spoilers for the series, so even if you’ve never watched the series, you can still listen in and find out which of us lovingly referred to this series as “anime Inspector Gadget”.

Hey everyone! An important announcement regarding the podcast! Starting in December of 2021, I'll be going on a much-needed little vacation for a few months (probably around 2 or 3, depending on how I'm feeling). After doing 105 straight months of podcasting, paired with some minor health issues I've been having lately, I feel like I just need a little break to help me prevent burnout. But like I say in the audio above, I won't leave you hanging when it comes to things to listen to! While I'm gone, I'll be uploading some really great podcasts I was a guest on that I think you'll all enjoy. I'll also be adding the special thanks for ko-fi tips on those re-uploaded episodes, and adding any updates as well, to keep you all posted on when I'm set to start recording again.

And for those of you sad that I won't be able to do the Year in Review this year, I'll still be doing my annual Holiday Giveaway to make up for it, and just because...I love doing the giveaway every year! So check back here on Dec 1st, 2021 to enter that. I'll have some fun prizes to give to a few lucky people, so hopefully that's a small silver lining.

If you'd like to continue to support me while I'm on break, here's how you can do so!
- Leave me a tip of any size on my ko-fi account (tips of 2 or more will get you a shout-out in the special thanks segment of the next episode!)
- Shop my affiliate links at Rightstuf, CDJapan, and Amazon! I get a few cents for each purchase you make.
- Buy merch with my designs on my Teepublic shop! Not only can you buy my designs/podcast logo merch on everything from stickers, tote bags, mugs, shirts, and more, I get a small percentage from each purchase made!
- You can also leave a nice review on whatever platform you use to listen to the podcast! It always brightens my day to see kind words about my work.

You can also follow the podcast tumblr here, where I have new posts queued up daily! And my personal Twitter account is here. And of course, you can still email the podcast any time at AnimeNostalgiaPodcast@gmail.com!

I'm so grateful for your continued support, and for your understanding while I take this much needed break! See you in December for the first of my "vacation" guest episodes and the holiday giveaway!

This month on the podcast, we’re celebrating the first ever North American English release of one of the most influential anime of the 70s: Future Boy Conan! That’s right, after over 40 years, we’re finally getting a release in America (with a new English dub!) thanks to Gkids. And with me to talk about this classic gem is Conan super-fan Dave Merrill! Listen as we discuss the history of this wonderful series, how many amazingly talented people worked on it, how it became a hugely influential pop culture phenomenon in Japan and other countries, and why YOU should add it to your watch list--all without any major spoilers!--in this extra long episode. Let’s set sail!
