Beyond The World And Man: Discussing Evolutionary Potential Through A Mystical Lens11 Feb 202101:20:01

For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I look at the evolutionary potential of humanity through a mystical lens in response to some questions posed by a listener through a recent e-mail discussion. Bailey asked:   1. What are your thoughts on humanity being a stepping stone for the evolution of Artificial Intelligence?

2. Should we fear the potential of losing our humanity?

3. While I agree that individuals are not special, do you think humanity itself is special?

4. Is there a case for staying human forever (with technological augmentation) vs evolving into something new (AI/singularity)?

5. Do you think a simulation that we create to mimic fear and the unknown is a trap?  I explore these questions by beginning our analysis through the eyes of Rudolph Steiner and anthroposophy since Steiner took a mystical perspective on these questions by introducing the concepts of the Lucifer/Christ/Ahriman archetypes to deal with the forces that have guided our philosophy through human evolution from the past to well into the future. I also deal with some of these questions from the perspective of Buddhism and Christianity, with a touch of vedantic and Zoroastrian cosmology.

The Life And Purpose Of The Shaman (Commentary On Terence McKenna And Alan Watts)26 Dec 202000:31:11

Today, we are diving deep into the life and purpose of the shaman and how it relates to modern culture and how the path of the shaman can lead to finding awakening and true gnosis through direct personal experience. To do this, I'll be doing some commentary on two lectures, one from from Terence McKenna and another from Alan Watts, we'll explore different aspects of the life and purpose of the shaman in various cultures and traditions, and what they can tell us about finding a "pathless path" of understanding.

The Not Quite Pagan Origins Of Christmas24 Dec 202000:25:05

At this time of year, there is always a lot of discussion about the origins of Christmas and how the early church co-opted many pagan traditions to create what we now consider Christmas, but is this actually true? While there are certainly many cultures and traditions that inspired Christmas, you may be surprised to learn its true origins and how it was even banned as a holiday by certain Christian sects.

Symbology 101: The Sky Deer And The Path To Enlightenment18 Dec 202000:34:15

As we continue to explore the origins of myth and culture, let's take a look at the symbolism behind the deer and the stag. Sometimes referred to as the Sky Deer or Sun Deer, this animal is an integral part of shamanic traditions all across the world with close ties to both sun and moon worship, but also connected to the rituals of life, death, and resurrection and often marking the path to awakening or enlightenment in traditions as varied as Bon, Celt, Huichol, Scythian, and Shinto.

Symbology 101: The Sacred Cow As The Mother Of Mythology12 Dec 202000:45:41

Welcome to the first installment of Symbology 101, a series into which I dive deep into the symbols that create cultures and expand ideas.

For this first installment, I dive deep into the sacred cow (and bull) and its importance within Indo-European civilization and how it has shaped our cultures, religions, and philosophies for millenia as the mother of all mythology. I dive into various aspects of the sacred cow in Hindu, Greek, Roman, Celtic and Germanic cultures, before heading to Persia to establish the symbolic link between astro-theology, history, and the influence of the Zoroastrian religion as we begin to dive into it over the next few episodes.

Eastern Influence On The Christian Mystical Tradition And Knowing Through Unknowing28 Oct 202000:51:42

On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I take a look at the Eastern influence on early Christian thought, and the similarities between mystical experience and the recognition of the divine and the self. We will take a look at the Kena Upanishad along with some of the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius The Aeropagite to make connections between these two traditions, and how the neti neti method - or agnosia as Pseudo-Dionysius called it - can be used to understand who we really are.

Reality Isn't A Mystery26 Oct 202000:58:31

For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I depart a bit from our recent discussion of Gnostic Christianity to dive into one of my favorite quotes, and one I use all the time, from Sufi mystic Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari - "the real is not veiled from you, rather it is you who are veiled from seeing it." Through this quote and the passage from which it is derived, I analyse the mystical experience, understanding how to acquire truth, and what ultimately prevents us from "getting it" - ourselves.

Tribalism And Critical Thinking08 Oct 202001:05:00

Why do we create tribes, what are their purpose, and how can we be members of a tribe while maintaining critical thinking skills and not relegating our authority to them. While not necessary, it may be worthwhile listening to the previous episode, Understanding Open-Mindedness And The Quest For Truth, in order to grasp some of the points of this discussion.

The Divine Feminine, Mystery Traditions, And The Exegesis Of The Soul30 Sep 202001:38:04

It's time to go deep down the rabbit hole on this episode of The Alchemical Mind as we look at the importance of the divine feminine within mystery traditions as we continue our exploration of Gnosticism with a look at The Exegesis Of The Soul.

Through this text, and accompanying readings from Magdalene Mysteries: The Left Hand Path Of The Feminine Christ, we'll explore the importance of the feminine aspect of the divine through traditions stemming from John The Baptist to Simon Magus and why this forms the core of the teachings of various mystery schools through antiquity, the middle ages, and into modern times. This is an important milestone for the podcast as we start to break down modern misconceptions of language and symbolism, which will play a key role for the show moving forward.

The Valentinians And The Gospel Of Philip26 Sep 202001:39:49

For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, we switch gears from the dark cosmology of the Sethians to the Gospel of Phillip and the Valentinians. Valentinus was educated in Alexandria and set up his school in Rome and was largely influential in early Christianity by introducing the original concept of a triune god. Apparently through his discontent of not becoming bishop of Rome, Valentinus set up his school with a curiously non-dual view of the nature of god that was deeply influenced by the Platonists, Hermeticists, and Eastern ideology.

In The Gospel Of Philip, we learn about the Valentinian view of the nature of god, the sacraments, the divinity of Christ, the creation of the world, and most importantly, the importance of words and symbols and their interpretations.

Let's begin our deep dive into Christian mysticism with a multi-part series on Thomas Aquinas' proofs for the existence of God. For this part in the series, I'll look at the argument from motion, and why it's important in our understanding of logical thought, and using some sort of scientific method in determining the difference between belief and gnosis.

The Secret Book Of John, Part 223 Sep 202001:36:30

As  we continue our deep dive into Gnosticism, I take a look at The Secret  Book Of John. This is part two of a multipart series on this important  Sethian text, as we look at the intricate Gnostic cosmology. On this episode, we'll go into how the universe was created according to the Sethians, what the nature of god is, how physical reality came to be, why there is an "evil" god in their cosmology, and how humanity can return to the Pleroma (or the fullness) of the one true god through the cultivation of our innate inner spark. This is a fantastic piece of the Gnostic puzzle, but be sure to listen to part 1 before diving in.

Terrence McKenna On The Gnostics and Early Christianity18 Sep 202000:59:02

Before we dive into part 2 of The Secret Book of John and dive deep into Gnostic cosmology, I wanted to bring you a bit of commentary on Gnosticism and the early Christians from none other than audience favorite, Terrence McKenna. In the first part of this episode, McKenna talks about the influence of Rome on the development of early Christianity and how Eastern ideas, as well as various Western mystery schools influenced the development of Gnostic and Christian thought. In the latter half, McKenna of course dives into the sacred mushroom and how psychedelics have influenced mystery schools throughout history, all interspersed with a little commentary from yours truly.

How To Find Out What Is True, Part 216 Sep 202000:55:04

On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, it's time to look at some of the practical applications of finding gnosis as I take a look at how we can determine what is and isn't true. This is not some esoteric view of finding some sort of "ultimate Truth," but rather some simple things we can do to analyze information and weed out false information.

In part 2 of this series, we begin by discussing the story about the fiery dragon in the garage from Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark before diving into some of the philosophical fallacies to watch out for when analysis information to be true. I conclude the episode with a fantastic bit from George Carlin on weasel words that wraps the discussion up nicely.

If you missed part 1, you can listen to it here. I also reference my series on finding an regaining your own authority which you can find links to below.  You Are It: Understanding That You Are The Ultimate Authority I Am That I Am: Authority And Religion

Life On Venus? Some Thoughts...14 Sep 202000:20:00

On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I go a bit off-topic to talk about the news today that life may have been discovered on Venus. What does this mean in relation to topics I usually discuss on the podcast? Is this huge news or a sign of things to come?

As always, do your own research on the topics discussed on the podcast. The article I referenced on this episode is entitled Life on Venus? Astronomers See a Signal in Its Clouds.

The Secret Book Of John, Part 109 Sep 202001:00:13

As we continue our deep dive into Gnosticism, I take a look at The Secret Book Of John. This is part one of a multipart series on this important Sethian text, as we look at the intricate Gnostic cosmology. The Secret Book Of John is key to understanding how the Gnostics view the idea of god (hint: it's very non-dual), what man's place in the universe is, and how the world was created by an evil, ignorant god known as Yaldaboath, Saklas, or simply as the demiurge, which leads into a discussion of the similarities between Gnostic ideas and those that we see among the Hermeticists, Platonist, Pythagoreans, and more.

Alan Watts On Gnosis And Dogma04 Sep 202000:46:00

I took the day off from recording, but that doesn't mean you won't be getting a new episode of The Alchemical Mind! For this special episode, I bring you a great speech by Alan Watts on the early Christian thought, the importance of gnosis in the early church, and its similarities to similar ideas from Buddhism and Hindu traditions. Then, Watts ties it all together in a nice little bow by discussing how true gnosis and dogma are not necessarily mutually exclusive, even though they may appear to be and why the pursuit of spiritual truth does not need to be tied to ritualistic boredom.

How To Find Out What Is True, Part 102 Sep 202001:02:47

On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, it's time to look at some of the practical applications of finding gnosis as I take a look at how we can determine what is and isn't true. This is not some esoteric view of finding some sort of "ultimate Truth," but rather some simple things we can do to analyze information and weed out false information.

We begin this series by examining Carl Sagan's baloney detection kit from his book The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark and how we can use the scientific method in to determine if something is "true" or not - even when dealing with spiritual, philosophical, and other epistemological endeavors.

I do mention a terrific interview with Tim Freke which you can find here. I also reference my series on finding an regaining your own authority which you can find links to below.

The Gospel Of Thomas28 Aug 202001:07:06

The Gospel of Thomas is a fascinating text from early in Christian history and one of the most accessible texts from the group that is generally dubbed as the Gnostics.

On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I begin an exploration of Christian Gnostic thought with a book that has fascinated me for many years. The Gospel of Thomas is unique from many other sacred texts in that it is simple a book of sayings - 114 to be exact. Let's dive into just who the Gnostics were (or weren't), what it means to be a Gnostic, the group's relationship with Hermeticism, and the influence of Buddhist ideas on early Christianity.

The Hermetica and Mystery Traditions26 Aug 202000:58:01

Welcome back to another episode of The Alchemical Mind. This episode is part four of my deep dive into The Hermetica and since this text has inspired so much of Western esoteric thought, what better way to wrap this discussion up than by talking about mystery schools. What are mystery schools? What does Hermes have to say about the mysteries? Should knowledge be kept hidden? I'll dive into all this and more, as well as a brief reading from Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings Of All Ages to try to get a grasp on the subject.

Terrence McKenna On Magic and The Hermetic Tradition19 Aug 202001:39:27

This episode of The Alchemical Mind serves partially as a departure from our discussion on The Hermetica, but also as an added bonus with additional information on the influence of this work and the traditions it is based on on Western theology and philosophy. I'm sure many of you know Terrence McKenna from his work with psychedelics, but he was also deeply knowledgeable in theology and philosophy, so for this episode, I bring you a speech from McKenna on the hermetic tradition, magic, and mysticism.

I will return on Monday with the final part of our discussion of The Hermetica as I dive into a discussion of mystery schools in preparation for what will serve as a basis for much of podcast for the month of September.

Belief Is Wish Fulfillment, Gnosis Is Unprovable21 Aug 202100:20:30

Before I start my deep dive into Thomas Aquinas' five proofs for the existence of god, I wanted to take a few minutes to react to a recent blog post by Mike from the Mind Escape podcast with regards to understanding belief and gnosis. You can read his blog post here.

I found the idea synchronistic enough to some of the ideas discuss in the Aquinas series that I wanted to talk about belief and gnosis once again as an introduction to Aquinas. I'll be going a bit deeper on some of these ideas this week as I'll be a guest with Mike and Maurice on their show.

The Hermetica, Part 213 Aug 202001:02:48

Welcome to The Alchemical Mind. This episode is part two of a three part deep dive into The Hermetica, one of the most powerful and influential sacred texts of all times. Its origins are a bit of a mystery, but its influence on Western philosophy, science, alchemy and religion are without question, even being partially responsible for launching the Renaissance in Europe.

For part one, I dove into the creation and nature of god and the universe according to the text. Part two focuses on humanity's purpose in the universe, and part three will dive into a discussion on mystery religions in the context of The Hermetica.

Understanding Ego Backlash04 Aug 202000:53:45

Welcome back to The Alchemical Mind. This episode focuses on understanding ego death, and more importantly, ego backlash.

What are these two concepts, how are they related, and how do they relate to mystical experience? I am going to dive deep into this topic, intermingled with a couple of fascinating comments that sparked the idea for this episode. We will talk about how these concepts are expressed in different mystical traditions, wrap it all around the fabulous Ten Ox Herding Pictures story from the Zen Buddhists, and more.
