Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Pt. 1 (4th World War)22 Apr 202401:29:09

Today we're talking about none other than the First Lady of Neo Soul. If you've ever wondered how hip hop of the 2010s got so groovy, look no further than New Amerykah. With her eclectic style and taste in music, she brings us everything from 70s funk to 90s R&B and everything in-between. After a several year hiatus due to writer's block, Erykah, with the help of some of hip-hops best producers, she came back strong with this record and remains somewhere near the top of mount hip-hop.

Flyover State TV's "The Island" - 2000s Indie Rock (w/ Haptic GG)06 Sep 202101:54:21

We're doing something a little different today. Since we had to shuffle some things around, we couldn't record an episode so we decided to show you what our livestream “The Island” was like in it's place. Every other week, Nate, Reis, and Brad go back to the island to listen to a new location based playlist with a new genre every week. This episode is a real nostalgia-fest, as Brad tries to create the perfect Indie playlist for close personal friend Haptic GG (Dustin Booher from the Hellogoodbye ep) using 2000s Indie Rock as a template. It's not always exactly Indie... and it's not always rock... but Indie was a pretty loose term in the 2000s and Brad & Dustin reveled in it when it was burgeoning on myspace pages across the nation. Here's what Brad cooked up:

  1. The Killers – Sam's Town
  2. Panic! at the Disco – London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines
  3. Cage the Elephant – Aberdeen
  4. So Long Forgotten – A River Flows in the Desert
  5. mewithoutYou – In a Market Dimly Lit
  6. Hellogoodbye – Homewrecker
  7. The Extraordinaires – Seven Seas
  8. Cloud Cult – The Will of a Volcano
  9. Bright Eyes – Land Locked Blues
  10. Matt & Kim – Northeast
  11. Tegan and Sara
  12. Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time
  13. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Taylor Swift - Fearless (w/ Kayla Dunlap)23 Aug 202102:13:39

The great SWIFT OFF is upon us! We teased it on our Pet Sounds episode, but now we are really getting INTO IT. We're going to dive deep into her career from 2008 with the original release of "Fearless" to 2021 with her own "Taylor's Version" of the album (which she painstakingly re-recorded start to finish), and we have a HEATED debate about the soul of modern country music! Are you team Taylor or team Twang???... I mean... really it's less of a debate... more of a discussion... yeah, really just a discussion about music. Today Brad, Jon, and Jake are joined by Kayla Dunlap, who was a teen girl when this album about the life of a teen girl came out!

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions16 Aug 202101:42:16

We're crossing another epic album off the list today with Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions". By the time this released in 1973, Wonder had already completed 15 albums (16 if you include his greatest hits) for the Tamia label on Motown Records. Coming off the heels of "Talking Book", he was already a completely realized artistic force and he had no intention of stopping any time soon. With "Innervisions" and the albums that succeeded it, he showed the world what this blind Motown kid was capable of, including playing most of the instruments for the recordings and exploring his artistic capabilities to the fullest. This is just one of several episodes of his greatest work that we will discuss more next time (whenever that may be).

Just the regular crew today y'all! Please excuse the endless technical issues in this episode. If you would like to help in that area, please go to https://patreon.com/flyoverstatepark !!!

SEASON 3 PREMIERE - Digimon: the Movie Soundtrack09 Aug 202101:53:43

It's our 3rd installment in killer children's movie soundtracks and of course we have back our soundtrack aficionados, Griffin and Alex Woodchicken to break down another time capsule of a soundtrack, designed perfectly for a child growing up in the 90s. That's right, it's possibly the greatest(?) children's soundtrack ever conceived by corporate America: the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack. Where the Transformers: the Movie soundtrack captured the essence of 80s power/hair metal and the Jetsons: the Movie soundtrack captured 80s electronic/pop, the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack captured a real amalgamation of popular 90s genres, from rap to surf rock to ska to rap/pop/rock(?), all interlaced with sick scratches on the turntables. It somehow has everything that the 90s was at the turn of the millennium without anything feeling out of place. It's like the Reese's of children's soundtracks. Just to name a few flavors, we have Barenaked Ladies, Smashmouth, and Fatboy Slim (and a truly epic “Digi-Rap”) on the front half of the album, and then Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Less Than Jake on the back half. Not to mention the 90s reimagining of 80s pop hit “Kids In America” that was hastily made to market directly to a young American audience (thematically having little to nothing to do with the movie, but can't lie, song was dope). Get ready to hear us at our absolute nerdiest, as Brad, Jon, Jake, Griff, and Alex discuss Digimon in more depth than anyone asked.

Carole King - Tapestry (w/ Jordan Duffy from Earwolf!)20 Jul 202102:09:21

It's not often that our guest walks such a similar path as the artist that we're discussing. The artist is Carole King, a studio musician and songwriter that wrote for legendary singers like Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell—before solidifying a singer/songwriter career of her own with her album “Tapestry”. The guest we have on is Jordan Duffy, an engineer at the podcast network Earwolf, home of Comedy Bang Bang and How Did This Get Made, and former home of Hollywood Handbook. Jordan has worked behind the scenes of some of your favorite podcasts, such as “Yo is this Racist?”, “Best Friends with Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata”, and “The Deep Dive” (with June Diane Raphael and Jessica Saint Clair)--and now she has her eyes set on proving to the world what her BA in vocal performance means. She's got octaves for days, more hours in a studio than you could count, and she's a singer/songwriter in her own right, so she's basically our generation's Carole King.

Make sure to stay tuned to the end of the episode to get an exclusive look at what Jordan is capable of with short demo of her song “No Big Deal” and check out her "Powerful Ladies Podcast" (link in the description).

The Who - Quadrophenia pt 2 (w/ Darin Wilson)12 Jul 202101:08:24

In the second part of Jimmy's Journey to find out who he is and what he lives for, he seeks the comfort of Brighton, where all of his amazing experiences with the mods took place. After finding that Sting aka Ace Face, one of the coolest mods, has begun working at the hotel they once trashed just a few years prior. Jimmy is feeling more and more like what they did meant nothing and gets closer and closer to the truth that he's been playing a role that doesn't quite fit him. After stealing Ace Face's moped, Jimmy takes on last journey out past the shore and has a spiritual epiphany with one of the greatest Who songs around, "Reign O'er Me".

Today, we're continuing on with our guest Darin Wilson from BUCK Neck-ed and guest of the Songs We Didn't Write Podcast!

The Who - Quadrophenia pt 1 (w/ Darin Wilson)05 Jul 202101:53:52

We are winding down to the end of season two with just four episodes left until we start with a fresh new season after 80 episodes of the podcast! We did a lot of double albums in season two, so to start off our countdown to the end, we're talking about the first disc of The Who's "Quadrophenia", considered by many to be the quintessential Who album. Last time we discussed The Who, we were talking about Tommy. Today, we're here to talk about Jimmy. In this first half of his journey, Jimmy is a boy trying to find his place, growing up in post-war Britain. He considered himself quite the mod, going as far as to take part in group fights with the rockers, and losing his office job to pursue a more bohemian lifestyle. However, Jimmy has developed a poor attitude and becomes disillusioned to the mods, as he sees them taking jobs to pay bills to be insincere to the mod values. By the end of disc one, he has isolated himself from friends and sought out the only refuge that he knows... the sea.

Today Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake are joined by Brad's good friend Darin Wilson, musician, deacon of sorts, and recurring guest on the Songs We Didn't Write podcast

XTC - Drums and Wires (w/ Adam Elk from The Mommyheads!)28 Jun 202102:23:40

The 80s started in 1979. If one were to pinpoint a single thing that brought all the popular music of the 80s together, it would have to be the newly utilized “gated reverb” production technique for the drums. The drum solo that plays in Phil Collins' “In the Air Tonight” right before Mike Tyson punches Ed Helm—is the most popular example of that effect, and definitely one of the first. However, he wasn't the only group that engineer Hugh Padgham and producer Steve Lillywhite were working with when they accidentally discovered the effect. Along with Peter Gabriel, who was also recording at Townhouse Studios (London) at the time, there was also a New Wave group called XTC, and they had their own contribution to the popularity of the effect with their gorgeous sounding 1979 album “Drums and Wires”. The concept of the album was pretty simple. Great sounding drums. Great sounding guitar. Epic vocal delivery. And not overly produced. It set the standard for almost all genres in the 80s with the crispiest sounding drums ever heard.

Today Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake are very excited to have on guitarist and lead singer of the band The Mommyheads, and XTC fanatic, Adam Elk!!!

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage / Head Hunters (DOUBLE FEATURE)21 Jun 202101:54:40

It's episode 75 and we have a double feature for you guys! We've danced around jazz music up to this point, as it is an influence on many other music genres, but today we're finally diving in to jazz proper. Since there were so few tracks on these albums (and because jazz music is a little harder to discuss), we decided to do our first double feature for an artist. First we have Hancock's 1965 album "Maiden Voyage", which is very much what you'd expect when throwing on jazz, which is in this case considered "modal jazz". Considering Hancock was only 24 at the time, this album was extraordinarily sophisticated. Coming off the heels of playing with Miles Davis, he employed some amazing jazz legends to help him make his mark, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. These songs became so big that a few of them are still standards for jazz bands today. But Hancock wasn't one to dwell on the past. His time with Miles Davis taught him that he needed to constantly push and reinvent himself. Eight years later, with the release of "Head Hunters" he did just that by making a fusion of jazz and funk, and changed the whole jazz game in the process. This brought him out of the purely jazz scene, which was fading from relevance, and into a fresh, new world where the youth were picking up on his music and loving every second of it. This album is astounding start to finish and there's a reason that it is so highly regarded by critics and hipsters alike: It slaps.

With the regular crew, Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake Foster!!!

Wu-Tang - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (w/ Trevor Kolden)31 May 202102:04:39

"From the slums of Shaolin, Wu-Tang Clan strikes again
The RZA, the GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck
Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killah and the Method Man
..." (and also Masta Killa...)

That's right. Today we're talking about the greatest rap album of all time made by the greatest rap collective of all time. It's time to enter the 36 chambers of death... "Enter the Wu-Tang" is explosive, rugged and raw, and filled with verse after verse of the nastiest bars on top of some of the greatest hip hop production ever. With RZA's beats masterfully combining the grime of gangsta rap with the gritty and violent confrontations in kung fu films, they were unstoppable. By the end of this album, you know exactly who Wu-Tang was, what they're capable of, and an incredible look at the world they were creating with their own 'Shaolin'.

With Brad, Jon, Dave, and returning guest Trevor Kolden!

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (w/ 8bitescapades)24 May 202101:47:18

Major Tom...Halloween Jack... The Thin White Duke... Blackstar... David Bowie inhabited many personas throughout the years... but none as beloved as Ziggy Stardust. As someone that had experience his fair share of success and failure, Bowie was 5 years into his solo music career and was carefully and covertly crafting his magnum opus, going so far as to only play the songs in his side band Arnold Corns until they were ready. However when it was ready... it wowed the world and became a cultural sensation. They toured for eighteen months straight, with Bowie inhabiting the role of Ziggy on stage and increasingly off stage. Eventually Bowie started to worry about his identity, even creating a new persona called "Aladdin Sane" to cope with it, and in one of the most legendary moments in rock history, surprised both the audience and most of the band by stating it would be "the last show that we'll ever do". And that was the fall of Ziggy Stardust...

Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer (w/ Grant Summerland)18 May 202102:22:06

"We come from dirt and when we transition out we go back to dirt. […] We’re CPUs, our brains are uploading, downloading, transmitting, passing back and forth information. And with all computers you got your bugs, you got your viruses. But are those negatives, positives, features? Or not? I think it’s a conversation I want to have with us as a society, as human beings, about what it means to tell somebody that their existence, either they’re queer, minorities, women, poor, makes you have bugs and viruses. […] it’s about embracing those things even if it makes others uncomfortable."                   -Janelle Monae on the definition of "Dirty Computer"

Resurrection Band - Awaiting Your Reply (w/ Kathy Jo Taylor)11 May 202102:19:28

What is Christian Rock? Where did it come from? Was it always so worship-y? Today on a very special episode of The Album Concept Hour, we're going to be answering all of those questions for you. Brad has teased his background in the Christian music industry before and with the help of his close friend and 2nd/3rd mother, Kathy Taylor from the Give Me 1 Reason podcast, they are going to compare notes on their experiences with the Christian music industry they each grew up with... And to get into that properly, we need to start at the beginning... The first Christian Rock band to stand shoulder to shoulder with other Classic Rock artists of the time... Rez Band (or Resurrection Band). With reformed hippie, Glenn Kaiser and Wendi, his wife with the outstanding voice, at the front as a Christian power couple, along with great musicians backing them in Stu Heiss, Roy Montroy, and John Herrin, they completely changed how Christians looked at music moving forward. They represented a shifting tide in American Christianity and were part of a new wave of hippie/Christian hybrids. Coming from the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Glenn Kaiser was able to capture the spirit of rock, while infusing it with his newly found spiritual beliefs and turn it into great Rock along the way.

With cohosts Jon and Jake!

[ARTIST SPOTLIGHT] Spiral Cell - The Maze in the Tree Rings (w/ Spiral Cell's Scott Uhl)03 May 202102:11:51

Today we get a chance to talk to Denver musician Scott Uhl about his project Spiral Cell and the 2016 debut album "The Maze in the Tree Rings". Scott is a one man band, mostly using loops to fill out his recordings and live shows, but gets assistance from musician friends when he needs it. In his debut as the masked figure behind Spiral Cell, Scott delivers a fully fleshed out space opera in "The Maze in the Tree Rings", complete with astronauts, robot therapists, and a grim future where you are only a number. Playing with a variety of genres, he creates his own epic sci fi soundscape with a mystery at the center of it all. Join Brad and Jon as they do their best to get through the maze in the tree rings...

Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me (w/ Patrick Auclair)20 Apr 202102:05:37

It's the end of Inspector 34 month and we have none other than Patrick Auclair, guitarist & pedal operator of the band, and today we have a very special episode with some heavier-than-usual content. Just a small trigger warning, we are going to be talking about predatory behavior towards minors and although we try not to get graphic, we are discussing real world events about the lead singer, Jesse Lacey, and their impact on the lyrics on this album, some of which, with the context of the victims stories, can come across as disturbing.

Today we have a very frank discussion about the difficulties of separating the art from the artist. Sometimes, it's very east to separate the two. Some lyricists don't put much of their personal lives into their work and their lyrics can stand on their own merit. But some write from a very personal place, pouring out a journal on top of their music. In the early 2000s, 'emo' music was all about being as emotional and in your face about it as possible. The music landscape involved countless variations on the "woe is me" trope, complete with nautical themes, and many wrote directly about experiences with depression and shame. Which brings me to Brand New. With the context of knowing Jesse Lacey gaslit and solicited nude photos from underage girls in the early 2000s, the art, which is largely biographical, changed. Knowing that the shame felt throughout "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" was because he finally realized how fundamentally screwed up he was for the abhorrent things he did changed how I will listen to this album forever. It's still one of the best sounding albums of the time, but we can't ignore the skeletons if they're not in the closet anymore, and we decided it would be better to talk about it!

Today with Brad, Jon, Jake, and guest Patrick Auclair!

Major Organ and the Adding Machine (self-titled) (w/ Jimm Warren)12 Apr 202102:33:10

Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying...

We're continuing our month of the band Inspector 34 with Jimm Warren, lead singer and guitarist of Inspector 34! With Brad, Jon, and Jake!

Ween - The Mollusk (w/ Alexandra Derderian)06 Apr 202102:05:03

"The Elektra staff had changed completely. They had fired the guy who signed us, and basically everybody else, including the president. They brought in this whole new staff whose introduction to Ween was 12 Golden Country Greats. With them not knowing us, they didn’t know if it was a put-on. A lot of people have so many misconceptions about that record. I think they thought it was our way to get out of the deal, which wasn’t the case at all. It was something we were proud of and love, plus we had The Mollusk about to drop. They had no idea what to do with the country record, so then it came time for The Mollusk, we were thinking, “This is our greatest record.” We mastered it with Howie Weinberg, sent it in, and I didn’t hear from Elektra for two weeks. I finally called the A&R guy, because the suspense was killing me. I said, “What do you think of the new record?” And he said, “What new record?” I yelled, “The new record! The Mollusk!” I heard him fumbling around on his desk and he said, “Oh, here it is.” He hadn’t even listened to it for two weeks! At that point, I knew the fucking record was doomed. Jesus Christ! They just gave us two huge advances, and we delivered two albums. I don’t know if they thought we were trying to put them on a second time, or someone mentioned, “Those guys did a nautical record.” I was so pissed! This was the best thing we’ve ever done, and they didn’t even care!"

Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell (w/ Ben Kaplowitz)29 Mar 202102:02:51

Meat Loaf is one of a kind rock legend. Teamed up with Jim Steinman, they forever changed the landscape of rock with the greatest rock opera of all time: "Bat out of Hell". Like his character in The Rock Horror Picture Show come to life, Meat Loaf took to the stage like... well, like a bat out of hell. His vocal range was astounding and his energy was much bigger than any frontman at the time. With fluffy shirt and handkerchief in hand, he was not your typical rockstar. "Bat out of Hell" took the world by storm, and he was an overnight sensation. It was truly a one of a kind fusion of a sound, frequently replicated since then, but rarely as good. However, in 1979, Meat Loaf was crushed by the weight of the fame, and wasn't able to get back up to that level of notoriety for over a decade.

We are continuing our month of Inspector 34 with their bassist, Ben Kaplowitz! Ben tells us about meeting Jim and starting Inspector 34 and the time he drove around Edgar Winter! With Brad, Jon, and Jake to discuss!

They Might Be Giants - Flood (w/ Silas Price)22 Mar 202102:18:09

Austin Powers. Malcolm in the Middle. Looney Tunes. Blues Clues. Istanbul (not Constantinople). What do all of these things have in common? No, it's not that they all include slapstick gags, it's that they have all had songs from the quintessential art rock group, They Might Be Giants. Whatever strangely themed music they made, the level of production mastery they brought to it was undeniable. “Boss of Me”, the theme for Malcolm in the Middle was so good that they even parodied it's style in the 2000s sitcom episode of WandaVision. In 1990, however, they were still on their rise to the giants that we know them as today. They had gained the respect of college radio and MTV, and their most recent album “Lincoln” had a #11 on the US Modern Rock chart with “Ana Ng”. With “Flood”, They Might Be Giants had their first big budget major label release, having signed to Elektra Records, and they did not waste a second of it. With the odd beauty of “Birdhouse in Your Soul” and the outright catchiness of their The Four Lads cover “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” (which was used in a Looney Tunes cartoon), they won over a mainstream audience, earning them a platinum album.

Today we are starting a MONTH (or so) of the members of Inspector 34 as guests! We're getting them each on individually to talk about an album that they love and we're starting with their keyboardist, Silas Price! He tells us about his other projects Fomosurfer and Pleasure Center and we talk about how They Might Be Giants influenced his own music. And we got the full cast of Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake to discuss it!

The Band - The Last Waltz pt 101 Mar 202101:57:28

Alright people, we have a real treat for your ears today. In this episode we are talking about some real rock legends. We're talkin' Clapton, we're talkin' Dylan, we're talkin' Muddy Waters, we're talkin' Neil Young and Joni Mitchell at the same time, need we say more?? You might be wondering what kind of epic happenstance brought all of these legends together? The answer is simple. It was for The Band. What band? THE Band. We're talkin' about the backing band that brought Bob Dylan into his electric period before growing into their own fully formed bluesy rock and roll group. This was a band that even the greatest rock groups at the time looked at with awe. Even Eric Clapton, one of the greatest blues guitarist ever, wanted to be in The Band...

This is going to be a two-parter since it's a three vinyl album and we don't want to cut out any of the performances. Today we have the whole crew with Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake "The Snake" Foster!

Deltron 3030 (self titled) (w/ Trevor Kolden)22 Feb 202102:12:52

Just one year after the world got the hip-hopera masterpiece "A Prince Among Thieves," the world got another injection of masterful hip-hop story-telling, in 2000's "Deltron 3030." It's an adventure that traverses time and space, in a universe where rap battling is the most honorable form of combat, and a way to fight the corporate overlords. Our heroes are Del the Funky Homosapien as "Deltron-Zero", a mech soldier turned rebel, and Dan the Automator as "The Automator", a "time traveling cyborg wizard" (actual quote from the wiki). Together, they attempt to take down the faceless, soulless organizations in this 31st century dystopia. They covered some of these Afrofuturist ideas in earlier hip-hop or hip-hop adjacent groups such as Sun Ra, Kool Keith, and Paliament-Funkadelic; but with the production capabilities of the beginning of the 21st century, Del and Dan the Automator give the genre a rejuvenation and an instant cult classic. Although it didn't get the initial attention that it deserved, "Deltron 3030" has stood the test of time, and even stands above a lot of what it had to compete with. Today it's Brad, Jon, Dave, Jake, and Trevor on to talk. It's the whole crew!!

Wanted! The Outlaws (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser)01 Feb 202102:03:04

What is outlaw country? Is it the raw and rugged wild spirit, like in Hank Williams? Is it Johnny Cash playing at Folsom Prison? Or is it just a moniker used to ground a new generation of country artists that could thrive outside of the country music machine? Some would say it's the latter, but it's really a combination of the three. Before the 70s, if you were a country artist, you followed somewhat of a formula. You wrote songs that were of a certain length or a certain tone and continued to crank them out for the studio if you wanted to get radio play. This infamously ruffled the feathers of some of the greatest artists of the time, but they mostly had to just endure in spite of it. By the time the 1970s rolled around though, the rising stars of country were sick of it. The story of going to Nashville, selling your songs for enough money to eat, then seeing the money that your songs brings the artist and the studio was getting old fast. And Willie Nelson, someone that thrived on unconventional songwriting, was getting shut out by the industry each time he tried to do something different. Frustrated with RCA's response to his album "Yesterday's Wine" in 1972, Willie actually formally retired from music, but it was short lived. Waylon Jennings was also going through the Nashville music machine at the time, and by 1976 it was time to make a statement. They would not follow the arcane country rules that held them back. They would be free. They would be outlaws... with Brad, Jon, and Jake the Snake Foster!

The cinematic hip hop coming of age tale continues and Tariq is really being taken in by this new flashy lifestyle, but in this half of the album, the other shoe drops. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (w/ Moses Wolfenstein!)11 Mar 202402:22:33

100 - 300 samples. That's how many songs, give or take, that went into the production of Beastie Boys' sophomore opus, "Paul's Boutique". After getting run through the music industry, sold as frat rap, and having a less than fly time in New York after their brush with success. After a few years, they escaped New York, saved by The Dust Brothers out in LA. The rest, is hip hop history.

Today we have back video game aficionado, musician, and friend of Dave, Moses Wolfenstein!!!

Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves pt 1 (w/ RamBunxious)18 Jan 202101:30:01

There was a lot going on in 1999. Y2K was looming over us, we were all partying like Prince (the artist formally known as) told us to, all colors were quickly being replaced with chrome, and all the pop monsters like Britney Spears, Cristina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc, RULED the charts. But underneath the bubbly surface, a hip hop coming of age tale of epic proportions was being carefully crafted... by hip hop royalty, Prince Paul. If you're wondering why you can't remember a specific song by him, it's because he's not usually center stage. A prodigy from the New York hip hop scene getting attention as young as 14, Paul was in several groups in his teenage years, including the influential group Stetsasonic, before producing De La Soul's first three albums. Paul continued producing and grouping up over the years, with mixed results, including a three song collaboration with Boogie Down Productions (which included KRS-One), a team up with RZA and others called Gravediggaz, and demo for Horror City with Superstar and various other MCs, which although not a success, would end up providing material for "Prince Among Thieves." In 1996 he was ready to make something for himself, but apparently did not have a lot of success in getting people involved, opting to get people outside of the music industry to guest on his debut "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" It's a very strange album that wasn't exactly a banger, but for the following album, he had more than enough success in getting people involved. Featuring some of the greatest names in hip hop of the time, including Big Sha, Kool Keith, Everlast, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Sadat X, Xzibit, RZA, and De La Soul (to name a few), with a Chris Rock cameo for good measure, "Prince Among Thieves" is a time capsule. It's a fully formed rap opera with compelling characters and a story of the streets as old as time...

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (w/ Sam Bronn)11 Jan 202101:40:04

Alright, everyone... It's finally time... to talk about the King.... No, not Elvis, we're talking about the real King. King Crimson. The band that was your favorite classic rock band's favorite band. One of those bands that although hugely influential, has maintained a weird underground cult status as well. They weren't the first to attempt some of the things they were doing, but they were certainly one of the best to do it so far. "In the Court of the Crimson King" was released in 1969, in a musical nexus between age of classically produced acts like The Moodie Blues & the stripped down and raw acts that would take over with the likes of Black Sabbath. It was a time that rock was still in it's adolescence and the rules weren't quite defined. When they revealed themselves to world fully formed in the summer before it's release to 500,000 Rolling Stones fans, they revealed something that drew influences from many genres and predecessors, but was entirely something it's own. It was King Crimson.

Today Brad, Jon, and Dave are joined by returning guest Sam Bronn and start today's episode with a little memorial for MF DOOM (RIP the villain).

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (w/ the Daughter of Lilith)28 Dec 202002:13:50

Its right in the middle of the holidays and we hope that everyone is having a wonderful time and remembering what brings us together. But we know that this is a hard year for holidays and many of us are not physically with our families or loved ones for the first time in recent memory, and it has surely taken a toll on our collective mental health. With that in mind, we thought what better way to discuss this than through the lens of Nine Inch Nails' quintessential mental breakdown album: "The Downward Spiral." The album is a masterpiece of cacophony, and somehow manages to transfer Trent Reznor's own mental decline into sound waves that reflect that. It's as if you are listening to an exposed nerve and it can even become uncomfortable, especially with the subject matter revolving around an eventual suicide attempt. In 1994, the year of Kurt Cobain's infamous suicide, this album was perhaps a lethargic way in--to understanding why someone would take their own life. Reznor is at such a low point that he doesn't even frame himself as the protagonist, instead reminding you of only what is bad in him... It's a refreshing and honest exploration into a conversation about suicide that desperately needed to happen.

We were fortunate enough to get the Daughter of Lilith (from various appearances on the Beauty Unlocked podcast) on our show today, and it ended up being a great conversation about mental health and suicide. We would like to in these trying times encourage you to reach out to someone if you are feeling hopeless, and if you don't feel like you can with your loved ones then there are plenty of people available to talk to:

Frank Sinatra - Song for Swingin' Lovers (w/ Trevor Kolden)21 Dec 202001:39:58

Its the holiday season, and even though the world is on fire, there is still one holiday tradition that we can practice: throwing on some Frank Sinatra and sipping martinis next to the Christmas tree. We've heard your croons and we're covering Sinatra again, but this time he has a little more pep in his step. As a followup to "In the Wee Small Hours," "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" could not be more different in tone. Every song is celebrating being in love or a fun, cautionary tale about the struggles of being in a relationship. This album continues Frank Sinatra's return with his Capitol Records years with help from his musical companion, composer Nelson Riddle. Join, Brad, Jon, Dave, and Trevor as they get loose and drink up the swing!

The Extraordinaires - Ribbons of War (w/ Matthew Carroll from the Marvel Cinematic Universe Podcast)14 Dec 202001:46:59

Love indie music from the 2000s? Do you enjoy a nice sea shanty from time to time? Do you read short stories and wish that they would be put to music form? Well, look no further. The Extraordinaires are a band that excels at short stories (and I'm not just talking about their album "Short Stories"). "Ribbons of War" is a classic star-crossed lovers story turned into a tale at sea. It switches between the perspective of the Captain, Annelies throughout the album, and even goes into the perspective of one Eli Culp. They went on to make "Short Stories," which was an album FULL of short stories and then eventually made "Electric and Benevolent," which was the story of Nikola Tesla.

With us today is a lover of stories himself and host of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Podcast and the Matthew Carroll Podcast, it's Matthew Carroll!!! We talk music industry, Marvel, and this album, which is one of Matthew's all time favorites...

Voïvod - Killing Technology (w/ Nathan Maney and Reis Galvan, cohosts of Side B!)30 Nov 202001:47:26

The eras of Voïvod are many. His adventures traverse the stars and civilizations throughout the cosmos. He has been both a prisoner on a prison planet, and a warden of one. He's spent some time in Morgoth, and has seen much destruction. The band, Voïvod, merely act as intergalactic bards, consigned to tell the tales of his adventures. On earth we call it thrash metal. In our earth year 1987 they released their third installment of Voïvod's adventures, titled "Killing Technology." In this album, you will find all the information you need to prepare you for the impending robot apocalypse that approaches. BTS - Love Yourself (HER) (w/ Mel LeBaron)16 Nov 202001:37:29

Missing the boy bands of yesteryear? Longing for fresh group choreography with equally fresh vocal variety? Remembering a time right around the turn of the Willenium, when pop and hip hop completely took over the airwaves? Well you can stop nostalgia-ing because K-Pop has brought it back. Introducing BTS, a Korean Pop group of 7 that has broken record after record and honestly we should have known about sooner. They have world-wide popularity, with their "Army" of Stans propelling them forward. Some are even Stans of them all. We have RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook and they have a variety of vocal styles they bring to the table, ranging from crisp harmonies to bars and bars of rap. On today's episode Brad and Jon talk to Brad's sister, Mel LeBaron about the intricacies of K-pop and pop in general and we briefly discuss Brad & Mel's watchalong podcast about the Neflix show Dark! Hole - Live Through This (w/ Emily Mills and Meghan Rose of Damsel Trash!!!)26 Feb 202402:11:46

Courtney Love. A woman plagued by tragedy and misogyny, tabloid and conspiracy. She has been called a lot things over the years, some by friends, many by the media. She has had beefs with the likes of Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Gwen Stefani, and Tori Amos, to name a few. However, one thing is certain. She is a force to be reckoned with. Today we're discussing the album that came out less than a week after Kurt Cobain's tragic passing, and a few months before the passing of their own bassist, Kristen Pfaff. "Live Through This" has become infamous for the tragedy that surrounds it, as well as the prophetic nature of the lyrics, and became one of the most important albums of the 90's.

We're joined by one of my favorite Madison bands (although these days they're a Madison AND New York band), Damsel Trash!!! We have Emily Mills, who is also in Little Red Wolf and Line -- and Meghan Rose, Little Red Wolf alum and musical composer for such musicals as "Held" and "Xena: Warrior Musical"!!!

Hellogoodbye - Would it Kill You (w/ Cynthia Booher & HapticGG)09 Nov 202001:30:16

We've covered a variety of relationship themed music in this podcast. From "Rumours" and the complicated spaces between friendship and infatuation, to predatory relationships that Alanis Morissette sheds light on, to the crooning longing of Sinatra for a relationship past, to just plain toxic relationships such as in "Song's About Jane." But today we finally have it. An album about the complexities of love, with the highs and lows, and an album about what it takes to stay together. And legend has it... the relationship worked out. Listening to this album gives you a full spectrum of the anxieties that come with choosing to spend your life with someone. It could be seen as a proposal album or a breakup album, but lucky for us, we know it works out. Mastodon - Leviathan (w/ Nathan Maney and Reis Galvan)12 Oct 202002:22:43

Southern rock. In the pantheon of rock, it goes back to the times of Bo Diddley and includes many rock groups over the decades: Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band in the 60s, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 70s, Pantera in the 80s, The Black Crowes in the 90s, and of course the infamous rise of Kid Rock in the 2000s. But somewhere in the late 90s or early 2000s, a strange child of southern rock and metal was being born, calling itself southern metal. Given only about half a paragraph in the wikipedia page for "souther rock," southern metal is simply metal made by people with a southern heritage, usually incorporating elements of southern/outlaw country guitar with sludge metal production. A few early adopters of this style were Clutch, Eyehategod, and Neurosis and they helped influence a new breed of young southern metalheads that were ready to take the music to it's next plateau... Enter Mastodon. In 2002, they blasted through the metal stratosphere with their debut release "Remission," with the chunkiest and thrashiest guitar sounds that could be produced, but full of dexterity and grace. They, along with groups such as Of Mice & Men and Maylene & the Sons of Disaster gave southern metal a brief couple of years of interest before fizzling out. Mastodon is more than just southern metal though. They are well respected and widely listened to metal, the kind of which had been firmly underground and segregated by the elitism inherent in metal fandom. It's hard to find a metalhead that doesn't have at least a few good things to say about the band. Today we're covering one of their most well known and larger than life stories: "Leviathan"... with special guests The Heretic (Nathan Maney) and The Blasphemer (Reis Galvan) and the podcast revival of The Witching Hour...

Jetsons: the Movie Soundtrack (w/ Woodchickens)29 Sep 202001:46:18

[to be read in the voice of Nick Wiger] William Hanna and Joseph Barbera met when they were both working at MGM studios in 1930. This was a time when Disney was still building their monopoly on family entertainment, and they were the kings of animation. In 1957, they joined forces to create H-B Enterprises (eventually renamed to Hanna-Barbera Productions), in the hopes of challenging the vast empire that Disney's animated films had created. Jumping off the popularity of the characters Tom & Jerry, originally developed under MGM, they developed a larger cast of characters, including Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear. While Disney and various animated shorts throughout the years had been produced for film, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera saw the future in a new medium that was growing in popularity: television. Up to this point cartoons hadn't been produced specifically for TV, but in 1960, with the creation of The Flintstones, they had figured out the right formula to make cartoons appealing to a primetime audience. By spending slightly less on the animation, but making up for it with dynamite vocal performances (such as hiring the legendary Mel Blanc AKA Bugs Bunny) and all in the sitcom family setting, they could make a cartoon that a lot of people wanted to see. The immense popularity of The Flintstones lead to countless more Hanna-Barbera classics that we know and love, including the futuristic counterpart to The Flinstones called The Jetsons. The Jetsons was far less popular, only getting 24 episodes in the original run, as opposed to the 6 seasons that The Flintstones got, but it slowly built a cult following; and by the 80s it was popular again and for the first time in 20 years, they made new episodes with much of the original cast. However, by '89 much of the cast was getting on in years and it was time to give The Jetsons a theatrical farewell. For Jetsons: The Movie they tried to use the formula that had given them success so long ago, using polished but still simple animation including dynamite vocal performances (this time, hiring the pop icon Tiffany to play Judy Jetson and hopefully bring in a younger audience) and including an environmental message in the main story. But this time, the formula didn't quite work. It was difficult to complete, as both Mel Blanc and George O'Hanlon died during production, and ended up getting pretty awful reviews from the critics at the time. But going back and watching it, the movie (and it's killer 80s pop soundtrack) is a strange time capsule, where it represents both nostalgia for the 60s and the 80s at the same time... with Brad and Jon and Griffin and Alex from Woodchickens!

The Who - Tommy pt 114 Sep 202001:17:20

When you think of The Who, you probably first think of all the mega-hit radio staples, like "Who Are You," "Baba O'Riley," "Behind Blue Eyes," or "We Won't Get Fooled Again." But before they inspired infinite classic rock acts with the 1971 album "Who's Next," they had their psychedelic phase... which is capped off by the previous album... the seminal rock opera "Tommy," released in 1969. For anyone that has had the chance to view the 1975 film adaptation of the album, you probably know what I mean. With everything from weird hippie cults to an actual acid trip, the story of "Tommy" shows the amalgamation of cultural changes happening in the 60s, both the good and the bad. However, trust us when we say, the bad... is real bad, but for now, we're only talking about the first half, tracks 1 through 10, which are... still pretty dark. In the first half of the story, our hero, Tommy, who is deaf, dumb, and blind, is shuffled by his parents from place to place, as they grapple with the realities of taking care of someone with disabilities. A combination of parental neglect and misguided attempts at "healing" Tommy, including (but not limited to) a trip to a local prostitute and an acid trip, leave Tommy in some harrowing situations. For instance, they allow cousin Kevin to babysit, who as it turns out is not well equipped with taking care of people... But you'll hear all about that in today's episode as Brad, Dave, and Jon try to unravel Tommy's sordid past...

Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (w/ Pamela Siemens)24 Aug 202001:45:41

Female empowerment in music, for a long time, was a facade in the male dominated record industry. Sure you had big names like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, and Joni Mitchell that have an ongoing legacy, but it was always an uphill struggle to be taken seriously, even for them. It wasn't until the 80s that women in music really started to break out of society's prescribed mold, adopting wild punk rock styles and living rock star lives, which used to be reserved for “the boys.” Rock music began to accept the likes of Tina Turner, Heart, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks and her astounding solo career. It was a definite push forward for women in the media landscape, but by 1995, and after the advent of alternative music, feminism in music needed a different approach. When you take off all the glam and glitz of the 80's, but keep its feminist edge, what do you have? The answer is Alanis Morissette. With two semi-successful albums already released on MCA Records Canada, and having done some acting before the music, Alanis was well aware of how the entertainment industry worked. Going what she had gone through as a child actor and eventual singer, Alanis knew better than anyone that women weren't yet being treated with the dignity they deserved, herself being involved in a predatory relationship with a Canadian record exec (referenced in the song “Hands Clean”) and a questionable relationship with Dave Coulier (infamously referenced in the song “You Oughta Know”). After all of her experiences and diminishing interest in her pop past, she was ready to show the world how fed up she was—with the sexism, with the predatory practices, and with the whole pop aesthetic. With “Jagged Little Pill,” Alanis, and cowriter/producer Glen Ballard, rewrote the rules on what was acceptable for a female pop/rock artist in the record industry, opening the door for the next generation of strong female pop/rock artists like Shakira, Michelle Branch, and Avril Lavigne. Join Brad, Dave, Jon, and a very special guest and badass feminist, Brad's mother, Pamela Siemens, as they break down the alt 90s angst!

Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy17 Aug 202001:51:59

1975 was a big year for Elton John. He was coming off the heels of his massive hit record "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," he had a thriving record label, he had made a small fortune of $8 million on his new record deal with MCA, he was asked by Pete Townshend (of The Who) to be the pinball wizard in their 1975 film adaptation of their rock-opera, "Tommy," and he obliged; besides the mostly negative criticisms of the 1974 album "Caribou," he was on top of the music world! It was time to show the world who they really were. Up to this point, Elton John and his lyricist/musical partner, Bernie Taupin, were somewhat ambiguous about their personal lives in their music, and their recording style was pretty fast paced, only taking a couple of weeks tops in the studio. They decided to take time on this one--and dig deep about their experiences. They discuss how they met, where they came from, and personal trials and tribulations, including the infamous suicide attempt referenced in "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" may not be the most commercially successful Elton John record, but it captures a glimpse at that moment in he and Taupin's lives and each song is dripping with raw emotion. However, it was the album that broke the original line-ups back, with members Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson being let go by John before the following album. Some consider this the end of an era for John, but definitely it was definitely not the end of his career. Join Brad, Dave, and Jon as they dive into the origin stories of "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy"......

30 Seconds to Mars - This Is War11 Aug 202001:44:14

It's the 30th episode of The Album Concept Hour! In order to commemorate it correctly, we're doing an episode about 30 Seconds to Mar's 3rd album, "This Is War." Coming off the heels of their successful sophomore release "A Beautiful Lie," which pulled people in with it's high-budget music videos/short films, brothers/bandmates Shannon and Jared Leto were poised to make another hit record. Jared Leto had reached huge success in his acting career and now he had reached that in his music career. To put it bluntly, this symmetrically-faced, actor/rock star/heart-throb was worth a lot of money. In 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars was trying pivot away from Virgin Records, who had acquired the label they originally signed to, Immortal Records. EMI (who owned Virgin Records) was pissed about possibly losing such a big asset and, seeing a chance to make some quick cash, attempted to sue the band for only completing 2 of the 5 albums they felt they were owed. However, Jared Leto pointed out that in California, contracts can't legally bind you more than 7 years and they were on their 9th year. Although they ultimately declared their contract null and void, they did end up staying with EMI for "This Is War," putting their differences aside. They have made peace, but the album they released is about the personal war they went through in the legal system during that time and is a big shift in their sound. Join Brad, Scott, Dave, and Jon as they try to discover what the war is all about.

Pink Floyd - Animals (w/ Moses Wolfenstein)27 Jul 202001:47:45

It's the end of the week of Pink Floyd, and we've covered the entirety of "The Wall." We've listened to it be built, brick by brick, and we've listened to it crumble. But now we come to how the concept of "The Wall" came to be in the first place. Sure, we've talked about the major themes and how Pink, the character, is an amalgamation of both Roger Waters and Syd Barrett's lives, but what about Pink... Floyd? How did they build the wall between each other--culminating in decades of bad blood (Waters on one side, and David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright on the other)? The answer for that lies somewhere in the creation of "Animals." At this point in their lives, Mason & Wright had already started families and Gilmour & Waters had just had their first kids. Most of the members of the band were for the first time distracted by their personal lives, Gilmour being uncharacteristically absent from the songwriting, with the exception of "Dogs," which he co-wrote. However, Waters did not want to slow down. He took the lead on this project and it was then that "The Division Bell" started to ring, as he started resenting the other members' contribution to the writing. Brick by brick, through arguments about royalty divisions and being unsupportive of other members' attempts at creative contributions, Waters started building his wall. By the end of the recording process, Wright was not even given a writing credit, due to Water's insistence that he wasn't contributing enough. Though, however fraught with creative conflicts, Pink Floyd managed to bring it together for a beautiful album in "Animals." Diving into a critique of capitalism, which is a contrast to the critique of bolshevism in the book "Animal Farm," Waters really gets into the divisions within capitalist society. Whether you are a dog or a sheep, the pigs on the wing are the ones running the show. Join Brad LeBaron, Jon Acker, David Gallagher, and special guest & Dave's good friend (and fellow beer connoisseur) Moses Wolfenstein, as we break down, what each animal represents and what it means for society.

Pink Floyd - The Wall pt 2 (w/ Jake Foster)24 Jul 202001:59:36

The wall has been built. Pink has the isolation he's been building toward his whole life. In his isolation, his hatred and fear of humanity continues to grow, and his delusional self becomes a musical Hitler of sorts, even calling for a "final solution" to deal with all those that are different than him. But even Pink eventually grows tired of his Hitler alter ego and starts to turn his accusations inward, and a trial ensues... In the second half of "The Wall," we follow his descent into madness (madness??) as he finally faces his worst fear: himself. With some of the most dynamic musical numbers in Pink Floyd history, from your standard 80s synth to roaring Gilmour solos to Disney-esque musical numbers, this album has everything. Whether you enjoy it or not, "The Wall" has become a cultural reference point for all concept albums and rock operas since. Ironically, the weight of "The Wall" was too much for the band itself to handle. As the wall came down in the album, walls were being put up between bandmates, and by "The Final Cut" they were fully built. But for now, join us outside the wall, as Brad LeBaron, David Gallagher, Jon Acker, Scott Westley, and returning guest Jake "the Snake" Foster (host of "Under the Covers") face the madness (1:42:55) together...

SEASON 2 PREMIERE - Pink Floyd - The Wall pt 120 Jul 202001:38:40

It's the season 2 premiere and beginning of our "Week of Pink Floyd"!!! In this episode, we cover the first half of the mac daddy of concept albums. This one is so conceptual, in fact, it's a full on rock opera. Hailed by most as a masterpiece, and by some as overplayed, "The Wall" is a journey of the soul for Pink, our protagonist. Beginning with the death of his father in the war, and continuing on to Pink's troubled childhood and adulthood simultaneously, the album attempts to describe how one builds the walls that shield them from making emotional connections with others. It's about isolation and the mental decay that comes with shutting everyone out. It's about generational trauma and growing up without a father. It's about feeling betrayed by the rising authoritarianism happening in Britain after the war (considering what they fought for). It's about watching the decline in the mental health of their friend Syd Barrett, as well as a semi-biographical account of Roger Water's life, who's father died in WWII. Really, "The Wall" is about a great many things and has moments throughout that are relatable to anyone. In this half of Pink's journey, join Brad, Jon, Dave, and Scott as we see why the wall was built. And make sure to join us on Friday, as we'll see how it's torn down...
