Usage Fees Are Killing Your Agency | Episode 22923 oct. 202600:43:23

[Cold open [ChatGPT UTM Drops, Disney SEO & Godzilla.] ends at 08:11.]

Getting better results for your clients shouldn’t mean making less money.

But if you charge a flat retainer and eat every usage fee, that’s exactly what can happen. More leads mean more calls, more automations, and more charges. Multiply that across your clients, and those pennies start taking a real bite out of your margin.

Our move from HubSpot to HighLevel brought this conversation back up. We talk through how call tracking, automation, reporting, and payment processing costs add up and why “we just eat it” deserves a closer look.

We cover passing usage fees to clients, setting pricing tiers, and accounting for costs in your ad spend pricing. We also talk about why billing needs to be automated. Saving your margin doesn’t help much if you create hours of manual invoicing.

Free Courses Every Agency Owner Should Take | Episode 22816 oct. 202600:43:12

[Cold open [Marathon Medals & Big Tech Ad Warfare.] ends at 07:30.]

Before you spend thousands on a marketing course, see what you can learn for free.

We both spent money on programs that didn’t deliver what we expected. This week, we walk through free courses from Google, HubSpot, Meta, and WordPress that agency owners and their teams can take. Knowing the fundamentals helps you spot when some biz bro is charging you for outdated, regurgitated information.

We also cover why Google Tag Manager is one of the most valuable skills you can add to your agency. Tracking leads and sales matters when clients are paying you to deliver results. And if you’re using AI to build websites, you still need enough web knowledge to understand what it built and what’s broken.

Getting certified doesn’t make you a marketing genius. We talk about where certifications fit into Google Partner status, how they can help establish credibility, and why platform training still deserves some skepticism. Start with the free resources before deciding what’s worth paying for.

7 Keys to Agency Scaling | Episode 22709 oct. 202600:42:56

[Cold open [Google is testing bigger Local Services Ads.] ends at 06:23.]

More clients won’t fix an agency that can’t handle the ones it already has.

In this episode, we lay out seven steps for growing an agency. We also talk about deciding what kind of agency you actually want to run. That decision affects the services you sell and the clients you take on.

We share how onboarding became such a bottleneck that we stopped taking new clients for months. Clients had already called us out for being too busy growing to deliver the monthly service. They were right, and we had to fix it.

We also get into why adding clients and hiring more people eventually stops being enough. Increasing revenue per client matters, but selling an extra service you can’t confidently deliver can cost you the relationship. These are lessons from building our own agency, including the parts we’re still figuring out.

How We Manage Our Agency’s Money | Episode 22602 oct. 202600:41:18

[Cold open [ChatGPT shopping fees and profit margins.] ends at 06:55.]

The money in your agency’s bank account isn’t all yours to spend.

This week, we walk through how we manage finances at Evergrow and how that system has changed as we’ve grown. We cover collecting payments, keeping business and personal money separate, and getting an accountant before your books become a mess.

We also explain how we adapted Profit First to give payroll, operating expenses, savings, and profit their own accounts. Those boundaries help us decide whether we can afford a new tool or hire without treating every dollar as available money.

Then there’s paying ourselves. We’ve gone from taking home $12,000 each in a busy month to less than $1,000 in winter. We talk about what changed and why your personal income shouldn’t swing with your agency’s seasons.

When a Client Is Too Big for Your Agency | Episode 22525 sept. 202600:41:49

[Cold open [Reacting to California's ban on addictive social media features.] ends at 06:20.]

In this episode, we break down what actually happens when you land (or think about landing) a client that might be too big for your agency to handle.

A lot of agency owners mistake the overall valuation of a client's business with the actual scope of work required. When you rush to take on massive accounts without the labor capacity to back it up, you end up compromising quality, burning out your team, or neglecting your existing clients. Real agency growth comes down to calculating your actual labor hours, not chasing big numbers for vanity.

We share our own stumbles, from turning down a 30-hour-a-week overflow contract early on to managing a franchise deal that eventually made up 35% of our monthly revenue. Relying on one account to fund half of your payroll creates massive operational risk if that revenue suddenly disappears or gets moved in-house. We talk through how taking on deals outside your limits can do irreversible damage to your reputation and pull you away from your core niche.

What is Your Agency's Brand Voice? | Episode 22418 sept. 202600:48:16

[Cold open [The Problem With ChatGPT Ads.] ends at 07:03.]

Your agency already has a brand voice, even if you’ve never defined it.

We learned this when a team member published the first Evergrow blog post that Cody or Jake didn’t write. The article was solid, but it didn’t sound like us. That exposed a problem many agency owners eventually face: once content and client communication move beyond the founders, the team needs more direction than “keep it casual.”

In this episode, we talk about defining a voice around your clients, company values, and the way your team actually communicates. We also explain why reviewing work together matters, especially when you’re training newer employees. The goal isn’t to make everyone sound identical, but to give them clear boundaries and room to contribute.

We also break down how objective writing standards can make editing less subjective. If your agency is delegating content, emails, or social media, this is the groundwork that keeps the brand consistent as the team grows.

How to Buy Premium Domains Below Sticker Price | Episode 22311 sept. 202600:46:38

In this episode, we talk about why the right .com can be worth pursuing as your agency grows. It will not instantly bring in more leads, but it can change how established and credible your business feels. That matters when you are building a real company instead of chasing short-term revenue.

We walk through how to find the owner of a taken domain, determine what it may actually be worth, and complete the purchase without hiring a broker. The most important part is deciding what you are willing to pay before the negotiation starts.

Cody also shares how he bought a domain listed for a few thousand dollars for just $230. It is a good reminder that an asking price is only an asking price, and that domain acquisition could become another useful service your agency offers clients.

The Tax Strategies Most Agency Owners Never Consider (ft. Emily Bowie w/ Thorne Advisors) | Episode 22204 sept. 202600:54:56

We sat down with Emily Bowie from Thorne Advisors to talk about the boring, unsexy side of tax strategy and fixing broken agency pricing.

Most agency owners lump tax prep in with basic bookkeeping and ignore real strategy until Uncle Sam takes a massive chunk of their profit. Emily breaks down why tax strategy starts making sense around the $100k net mark, how S-Corp elections factor into the mix, and how to handle reasonable compensation to stay off the IRS audit list. It comes down to understanding your actual cash flow instead of guessing your way through payroll.

We also talk about the operational leaks that make agencies look profitable on paper while the bank account tells a completely different story. From miscalculating labor rates to ignoring true overhead, scope creep silently eats away at your capacity to take on better work. Emily breaks down how one agency lost $120,000 just by failing to factor true delivery costs into their proposals.

If you want to stop bleeding cash on bad proposals and keep more of what you earn, listen to the episode and share your thoughts in the comments.

Account Management is Harder Than You Think | Episode 22128 août 202600:54:22

[Cold open [Moving to Tampa, podcast camera shaming, and getting called "AI slop" on Reddit.] ends at 12:43.]

Account management might be the hardest agency skill to teach.

We’re moving two experienced strategists into formal account management roles, and the hard part is not SEO, PPC, or reporting. It is learning how to communicate strategy, understand the history behind the numbers, and know when a client email needs 30 seconds or 30 minutes. Those soft skills carry more weight than most agency owners realize.

We break down the difference between client services, account management, and account executives, plus what each role actually requires. A strong account manager needs more than likability. They need strategy, organization, communication, industry knowledge, and a clear understanding of where they can push back.

If clients are used to working with the owner, handing off accounts takes more than changing the name on an email thread. You need to build trust, stay involved, and give the new account manager time to prove they can handle the relationship. Until that happens, stepping away from the agency can cost you clients and recurring revenue.

How to Stop Undercharging for Creative Work (ft. Jasmine Sotiropoulos w/ ReWorded) | Episode 22021 août 202600:59:50

We sat down with Jasmine Sotiropoulos to talk about the reality of undercharging, learning how to sell services, and niching down without torching your main agency.

Jasmine started like a lot of agency owners, taking cheap jobs on task sites, grinding nights and weekends, and saying yes to everything. Everything shifted when she stopped treating design like "making pretty things" and started learning how to communicate actual business value to her clients. That shift in communication allowed her to step away from low-ticket work and start closing $10,000+ branding projects.

We also talk about how she launched a second agency entity to capitalize on founder-led branding without trapping her original business in a single box. Plus, she breaks down why she skips lazy automation for personal voice memos and chooses tech stacks that make client handoffs painless.

If you are stuck undercharging or terrified of making the wrong strategic pivot, this conversation offers a grounded look at the boring work behind building a real business. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Competitor Interview: From White Label to Niche Agency (ft. Mark Kelly w/ Inbound Revenue) | Episode 21914 août 202600:59:10

Mark Kelly built Inbound Revenue by doing the work other agencies were selling.

For roughly a decade, white-label Google Ads made up most of his business. It reduced the sales burden and gave partner agencies a productized fulfillment system, but it also meant his team had to jump between completely different industries.

Mark is now shifting toward direct relationships with outdoor living contractors. We talk about why narrowing the niche gives him more control over budgets, client communication, and lead feedback. We also discuss why white-label agencies can lose accounts over problems they had nothing to do with.

We compare pricing, landing-page control, hiring Google Ads specialists, and the systems required to keep fulfillment consistent. Mark is building a different version of a niche agency than ours, which is exactly the point: two competitors can serve the same market without building the same business.

The Trade Show Strategy Behind a Six-Figure Niche Agency (ft. Matt Aldrich w/ Pet Engine Marketing) | Episode 21807 août 202601:09:33

We sat down with Matt Aldrich of Pet Engine Marketing to break down how he built a six-figure niche agency using trade shows and a $2,500 monthly minimum retainer.

Cold outreach flopped in his industry, so Matt pivoted to trade shows to build face-to-face trust with local business owners. He eventually turned those connections into paid speaking gigs that positioned him as an authority in the space. Most local clients did not even understand what a real marketing budget was, so educating them became step one.

We also covered why he completely ditched organic social media management after realizing it burned out his team and provided zero financial return. Instead of selling bloated service packages, Matt shifted his focus strictly to high-impact strategy, email, and paid ads. Agency growth is rarely linear, and sometimes cutting useless deliverables is the fastest way to fix your margins.

Quality Suffers When Owners Step Away | Episode 21731 juil. 202600:47:48

[Cold open [Steroids, workout hacks, and AI-flagged social content.] ends at 08:25.]

Stepping away from your agency before you have a proper scale built out is a fast track to lost revenue and client churn.

In this episode, we break down a recent post from our friend Caesar, who lost $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue after taking six weeks off. While he attributed the lead drop to pausing client acquisition, the cancellations exposed what happens to deliverable quality when the owner steps out. We discuss why raising prices without adding extra value creates high churn the moment you step back from managing those relationships.

Based on our conversations with multi-million dollar agency owners, you shouldn't hand off account management before reaching $2 million in revenue or sales before $5 million. Putting an early-stage agency on "autopilot" usually just means you are gliding toward zero. If you want to protect retention, you have to stay in the trenches and do the unsexy work required to maintain quality.

Competitor Interview: The Agency Built on Revenue Share (ft. Tyler Hoyt w/ Fast Break Digital Media) | Episode 21624 juil. 202601:46:04

We sat down with another competitor, Tyler Hoyt of Fast Break Digital Media, to compare how two niche agencies can serve similar clients while building completely different businesses.

Tyler explains how he grew from managing every account himself to running a lean team built around revenue share, contractors, a VA, and a setter. We talk about getting out of fulfillment, hiring people who are better than you, and dropping the belief that you need to control everything.

We also break down the realities of selling Meta Ads, setting minimum budgets, getting clients to create video content, and turning away prospects who will not do their part. Tyler shares real numbers on lead costs, close rates, acquisition costs, pricing, and why organic social is still his strongest source of new business.

Fast Break is now doing around $70,000 per month without a bloated team. This is an honest conversation about retention, seasonality, client expectations, and what agency owners can learn from the competitors doing good work beside them.

The Mid 2000s Agency Model is Dying | Episode 21517 juil. 202600:46:06

[Cold open [Paintball, sick kids, and the problem with barber fades] ends at 05:58.]

The agency model built on evergreen content and one reliable acquisition channel is starting to break.

Last month, 25% of our Google ad spend went to LSAs, something that would have been unheard of a year ago. Now ChatGPT Ads, AI search, and changing platforms are forcing agencies to rethink both service delivery and client acquisition.

We talk about why authority matters more than generic content, and how brand mentions, reviews, industry publications, social engagement, and video are shaping who gets trusted and recommended. Real credibility takes time. It comes from doing useful work and showing up in more than one place.

For newer agencies, that may mean working for free to gain experience and cold calling when inbound is not there. For established agency owners, it means staying involved in sales, building beyond one channel, and accepting that the old playbook will not carry the business forever.

This Is the Worst Year for Google Ads | Episode 21410 juil. 202600:59:49

[Cold open [Jake is moving... Again] ends at 10:40.]

Google Ads feels weird right now, and we’re trying to figure out what changed.

In this episode, we talk about what we’re seeing in real local lead gen accounts. LSAs are getting more attention, standard search ads feel weaker, CPAs are rising, and clients are asking fair questions.

We also get into what we’re testing next, including AI Max, target CPA, Google-hosted lead forms, ChatGPT ads, and better reporting. No perfect answers here. Just honest testing, cleaner data, and saying the quiet part out loud.

Competitor Interview: The $3M Mistake That Changed His Business (ft. Nicklaus Conley w/ Tekton Growth) | Episode 21303 juil. 202601:37:05

We sat down with Nicklaus Conley to talk about what happens when marketing works faster than the business underneath it.

Nick scaled his hardscaping company toward $3 million in contracts before a massive chunk of that revenue vanished in weeks. The crash wasn't a marketing failure; his operations and cash flow simply couldn't absorb the rapid growth. It is a harsh look at how high lead volume can give you dangerous, false confidence.

We also broke down why bragging about cost-per-lead is meaningless if you do not track your true customer acquisition cost. Now, Nick is building a lean agency focused on productized offers and AI automation. He is mapping out the unsexy systems required to scale MRR without creating endless drudgery for himself.

Competitor Interview: Did They Build a Better Agency Model? (ft. Ezra w/ Green Frog Web Design) | Episode 21226 juin 202601:22:35

This week, we brought on Ezra from Green Frog Web Design to talk about what agency owners usually avoid: competitors, pricing, retention, and what “enough” actually means.

Ezra works in the same lawn and landscape space we do, which is exactly why we wanted him on. Most agency owners treat competitors like enemies. We think that’s usually a barrier you made up yourself.

We got into his path from lawn care and cold calling to building a niche web design and SEO agency with a low-friction monthly model. No giant retainers. No pretending every client needs the same thing. Just a clear offer, a specific niche, and a business built around retention.

We also talked about the bigger question behind all of this: what are you actually building for? More revenue is great, but if the business forces you into a life you don’t want, that’s not much of a win.

What We’re Working On in 2026 | Episode 21119 juin 202600:58:57

[Cold open [Jake turns Iowa’s football stadium into a paintball field] ends at 10:39.]

We’re trying to figure out what the next version of our agency actually looks like.

SEO and Google Ads are still the foundation, but marketing alone has a ceiling. Adding more lead sources does not help much when clients only see the bad leads, follow-up is inconsistent, and everything gets compared to high-intent search.

In this episode, we talk through what we’re testing right now. That includes Google AI Max, lead form campaigns, HighLevel, and one dashboard that brings leads from every platform into the same place.

The bigger idea is moving beyond lead generation and into operations. Better qualifications, faster follow-up, sales coaching, and cleaner client data may be what makes the agency more valuable and less seasonal. We do not have it all figured out, but this is the boring work we’re doing to find out.

AI Is Devaluing Your Agency | Episode 21012 juin 202601:01:47

[Cold open [Jake’s 7,000-word schema study] ends at 11:56]

AI is making clients question what they used to pay agencies for.

In this episode, we talk about how clients are starting to look at agency work differently now that AI can give them a first draft, a basic design, a legal answer, a finance answer, or a marketing opinion in seconds. It does not have to be perfect to change how they think.

That is the part agency owners need to pay attention to. The real threat is not always what AI can actually do, but what the client believes it can do.

The value has to move somewhere else. Better thinking, better judgment, better relationships, better performance, and being the kind of partner clients actually trust when the AI gives them a confident answer that is wrong.

When Agency Fatigue Sets In | Episode 20905 juin 202601:08:04

[Cold open [Bad shaker bottles. Creatine. Gemini as a personal trainer.] ends at 08:43.]

Cody and Jake talk through the weird spot agency owners hit when the business is growing, but the work starts feeling less fulfilling.

This episode gets into the reality of running a productized agency at volume. More clients, more accounts, more expectations, and more moments where “just manage expectations better” stops being a useful answer.

They also talk about what the next evolution of Evergrow might look like. Not just adding another marketing channel, but building operational tools around the problems clients already have: missed calls, weak follow-up, no review generation, bad lead handling, and messy sales processes.

It’s part therapy session, part business discussion. The kind of conversation agency owners have when the machine is working, revenue is growing, and somehow the next problem still feels right in front of you.

The Rise of the AI-Informed Client | Episode 20829 mai 202601:11:25

[Cold open (Music opinions, Spotify habits, and Mr. Brightside trauma) ends at 09:40.]

AI has given clients just enough language to sound confident, but not always enough context to be right.

In this episode, we talk about what happens when clients start using ChatGPT, Gemini, or other LLMs to audit the work they already pay an agency to do. Sometimes the questions are fair. Sometimes they are just AI-generated checklists dressed up as strategy.

We get into SEO advice, Google Ads testing, schema, CDNs, landing page structure, and all the tiny technical things that sound important online but often do not move the needle. We opened up our inbox to share real client emails and break down how we set firm boundaries.

This is not an anti-AI episode. It is an episode about authority, trust, and what agency owners should do when clients start treating AI like the expert in the room.

Inside the Chaos of Automotive Marketing (ft. Jackie Studor w/ Make Model Marketing) | Episode 20722 mai 202601:46:04

We sat down with Jackie Studor from Make Model Marketing to talk about the absolute grind of running a niche digital agency in the automotive industry.

The automotive niche isn't built for standard agency plays. Jackie explained how her team navigates massive manufacturer compliance rules and co-op dollar systems where a simple error can cost a client thousands. Because of this intense nuance, they strictly hire account managers who have actual dealership experience.

They also do something most remote agencies avoid: visiting every single client in person every month. It's a high-touch model that drives an impressive 48-month retention rate but creates distinct operational bottlenecks. We dug into those hurdles, from calculating service margins without billable hours to managing team capacity as the business scales.

If you have ever thought about breaking into the car business, this episode is a realistic look at the industry. Car dealers do not buy from cold calls; they buy from industry peer groups and trusted referrals. It is a heavy, unsexy operation, but there is a lot to learn from how they structure their business.

Walking Away From a $2M Agency (ft. Dan Gent w/ Dear Agency Founder) | Episode 20615 mai 202601:54:57

We sat down with Dan Gent, who ran his product design agency, Lighthouse London, for 15 years before walking away in 2023 and now writes his own newsletter, Dear Agency Founder.

Dan details how Lighthouse reached 20 people and roughly $2 million in revenue before market conditions forced a closure rather than a traditional exit. He explains the dangerous "dip" where profit margins drop as you hire non-billable managers and ops staff to scale. This conversation is a blunt look at the reality that businesses often end by closing or walking away instead of a multi-million dollar payout.

We also tackle the difficulty of design retainers and why clients often stop seeing value once the initial project is finished. Dan advises treating yourself as an employee with a set wage in your forecast so you can actually afford to hire your replacement. He also touches on how AI is commoditizing "grunt work," forcing designers to sell accountability and taste instead of just Figma files.

Technology Is Changing Faster Than Agencies Can Keep Up | Episode 20508 mai 202600:53:47

[Cold open [Jake’s $700 Caviar Mistake] ends at 13:45.]

Technology is moving fast, but that doesn’t mean agency owners need to chase every new tool that shows up in their feed.

In this episode, we talk about the pressure agencies feel to keep up with AI, automation, new ad platforms, and all the other tools everyone is suddenly yelling about. Some of it matters. A lot of it is just noise.

The real question is not “what tool should we sell next?” It’s “what problem are we actually trying to solve?” We get into why chasing tools before defining the problem wastes time, creates bad offers, and makes agencies look more like hobbyists than operators.

We also talk about where technology has actually helped us inside Evergrow, from call tracking to lead aggregation to niche ad platforms. The point is not to ignore new technology. The point is to use it when it helps clients get more leads, handle those leads better, and make smarter growth decisions.

Should Agencies Show Clients Everything? | Episode 20401 mai 202601:07:28

[Cold open [A listener feeds Cody’s Panda Express addiction] ends at 9:02.]

Giving clients total transparency into their leads sounds like a good idea until they start seeing the garbage that comes with the gold.

When you open the black box of lead generation, clients often fixate on the junk instead of the lower lead costs. Moving up the funnel with services like LSAs naturally increases the volume of "trash" leads your agency has to manage. If a client isn't prepared for that reality, they will panic over a drop in impressions even when ROI is climbing.

We’ve realized our job is to provide results, which often means acting as a barrier between the client and the noise. We are now using voice and text AI to filter out non-serious leads before they ever land on a client's desk. Protecting your client's time this way prevents them from fixating on the "garbage" that naturally comes with scaling.

Transparency without education is just a recipe for client anxiety. You have to decide if you want to be a raw data provider or a partner who protects the client’s time. It’s unsexy work, but it’s the only way to scale your agency without losing your mind.

How to Get Clients with TikTok (ft. Cesar Gil w/ Symphony Advertising)24 avr. 202601:34:21

Cesar is back on the podcast this week to break down the unsexy reality of acquiring clients for his agency through organic social media.

His current lead flow relies heavily on TikTok and high-intent searches from ChatGPT. Building this pipeline wasn't a quick win, as he spent around three years posting content before landing his first real lead. Instead of overproducing videos, he notes daily agency observations in Asana and films his thoughts directly on his phone.

We also talk about dealing with negative comments and why defending your operational decisions online actually builds credibility with prospective clients. His content strategy eventually generated so much demand that he raised his baseline pricing to $1,250 just to intentionally slow down the volume. It is a solid reminder for the club that the most effective marketing strategies simply require patience and consistent execution.

How to Get Clients Using ABM (ft. AJ Doppke w/ Marketing Qubed) | Episode 20217 avr. 202601:32:35

[Cold open (People don't own fly swatters anymore) ends at 12:31.]

This week, AJ Doppke joins us to talk about the unsexy reality of scaling an agency and why growing too fast can break your operations.

AJ grew his gross profit by 70% in a single year. He openly admits it was a terrible experience. His operations struggled to keep pace with sales, forcing his small team to work uncomfortable overtime.

Now, his agency focuses on forecasting revenue and building capacity before chasing new business. We dig into his strategy for acquiring these right-fit clients using account-based marketing. Instead of blasting automated cold emails, AJ curates a strict list of 100 ideal targets.

He uses Gemini Pro to build the initial list. Then, he does the boring work of verifying contacts and building real relationships. This requires patience, but it builds a stable business for agency owners instead of a quick cash machine.

How to Get Referral Clients on Autopilot (ft. Josh Kimmes w/ Bear North Digital) | Episode 20110 avr. 202601:26:09

Josh Kimmes is back on the podcast to talk about the boring, unsexy work of getting inbound leads without relying on an exhausting outbound sales machine.

We break down exactly how his agency gets a steady flow of qualified prospects through highly specific industry service pages. Josh also walks us through his automated referral engine that triggers physical gifts and account credits when clients sign on. It is not about magic tricks, but building out systems that actually reward your clients for a job well done.

Later in the episode, we get into the weeds on agency operations and the tech stack running behind the scenes. We discuss his onboarding flow that resets billing dates to buy time for delivery, and the reality of using AI and automation tools without falling for the hype.

Building a legitimate operation takes time and heavy documentation. There are no shortcuts here, just agency owners sharing what works in the trenches. Give it a listen and see how you can apply these systems to your own agency.

Every Legal Mistake Your Agency Is Making (Ft. Sharon Toerek w/ Legal + Creative) | Episode 20003 avr. 202601:31:00

[Cold open (Jake's wife was gifted an at-home lobotomy kit) ends at 03:43.]

This week, we sat down with Sharon Toerek, a legal expert who actually understands the agency world because she's been in it for decades.

Sharon broke down the "three legs of the stool" for agency protection: intellectual property, solid contracts, and regulatory compliance. We dug into the messy reality of AI risk management, specifically how your team's casual prompts could be breaching client confidentiality or creating copyright nightmares. It's kind of the "boring" operational stuff that determines whether you actually keep the profit you make.

We also looked at why your "one-page contract" might be leaving you wide open to employee poaching or lawsuits over stock photo licenses. Sharon explained why ownership of ad accounts and assets is a major trust hurdle for clients and how to use your contract to lead those tough conversations. If you're tired of "hoping" nothing goes sideways, this episode is a reality check on professionalizing your operation.

How to Stand Out in a Saturated Market | Episode 19927 mars 202601:04:42

[Cold open (Jake Puts the McDonald's CEO to Shame) ends at 08:17.]

Starting a marketing agency seems to be the cool thing to do these days. Everyone is doing it, and there is so much noise.

How do you cut through it and stand out?

We've noticed a trend of people trying to flex an inauthentic, crass personality as their tactic, but cutting through that noise and standing out is much easier, and you don't have to be a clown while you do it.

How To Manage Agency Client Relationships Based on Ownership Structure | Episode 19820 mars 202601:04:19

[Cold open (Jake spills coffee on his keyboard and debates the utility of tablets) ends at 07:49.]

Most agency advice treats every client relationship the same, but the reality is that a family-owned local shop and a VC-backed firm require entirely different "languages" to survive.

In this episode, we break down how to navigate the power struggles and decision-making hierarchies of different business models. We discuss why "authenticity" can sometimes be a trap, how to manage the friction of new marketing hires, and why your reporting style needs to shift from "raw revenue" to "performative polish" depending on who is signing the checks.

Listen in as we explore the nuances of private equity, franchises, and why working with the "big dogs" in publicly traded companies is a completely different game of "dance monkey".

How to Get AI Automation Clients | Episode 19713 mars 202600:56:59

[Cold open ends at 07:13.]

There has been a lot of buzz lately with people mentioning and starting "AI Automation Agencies", yet they have no idea how to sell or position the service.

They're all operating under some expectation that businesses just inherently need or want these services, which is absolutely not the case.

But that doesn't mean you can't sell it and that there isn't value for it.

It all comes down to positioning.

The Restaurant Niche Episode | Episode 19606 mars 202601:32:35

In our pursuit of having an episode for every niche out there, we ran across Dante Montovano, who owns Seven Circle Media, a restaurant marketing agency.

We knew restaurant marketing was unique, but we didn't realize how much we didn't actually know about the industry and what actually makes fast food places, QSRs, and fast-casual restaurants the most amount of money.

Dante broke down exactly what it takes to be successful in the restaurant industry as a marketing agency and how knowing the industry is your secret weapon.

Marketing Agencies Should Own Ad Accounts | Episode 19527 févr. 202601:15:15

[Cold open (Cody is back from Hawaii) ends at 05:37.]

Most agencies you talk to, as well as the entire internet, will tell you that clients should own their own ad accounts, and you should work inside them.

But what if we told you this is the wrong way to do it? What if we told you that you are opening yourself up to potentially huge insurance and legal issues doing it this way?

Listen to this episode and find out the correct way to protect yourself and your relationships with your clients.

Scaling With Boring Services | Episode 19520 févr. 202601:02:16

[Cold Open (Professional paintball & 2-star reviews) ends at 16:31]

In this episode, we talk about scaling with simple services.

We break down why the things that actually grow an agency are often the least exciting to sell, how chasing trendy or “innovative” offers can create complexity instead of leverage, and what has actually worked for us as we’ve grown. We also discuss AI automation, local service ads, retention, and why repeatability matters more than sophistication.

This episode is about focus. What makes a service scalable, why simple does not mean easy, and how choosing the right offers can change the trajectory of your agency.

The Best PR Strategy for Agencies That Gets Clients | Episode 19413 févr. 202601:14:15

[Cold Open (Jake's Migraine) ends at 6:07]

What if the best PR strategy for your agency has nothing to do with your own website? This week, we talk about how to build massive authority and get clients by leveraging established platforms that already have your target audience.

We explain why building an audience from scratch is the slow way around. We share our lessons on using niche publications to build instant credibility and why we often prioritize these external sites over our own blog.

We also dive into the new reality of AI search. We discuss why ranking number one on Google is no longer enough and what you need to do to ensure ChatGPT actually recommends your agency.

Our Agency & Podcast Goals for 2026 | Episode 19230 janv. 202601:12:20

[Cold open (Busy Days, Zapier Debates, and Community Growing Pains) ends at 17:15.]

In this episode, we talk through our goals for 2026.

We break down what we want to focus on with the agency and the podcast, what’s changed in how we think about growth, and why being selective matters more now than ever. We also touch on audience expectations, visibility, and the trade-offs that come with putting opinions out publicly.

This episode is about being intentional. What we are committing to, what we are stepping away from, and how those choices shape 2026.

Everything Wrong with Wix Studio in 2026 | Episode 19123 janv. 202601:15:01

[Cold open [Jakes barber shop is obsessed with Peaky Blinders] ends at 08:16.]

The Agency Growth Podcast officially has a new website!

And it's built on Wix Studio. We kept our promise after our initial conversation with Kobi Gamliel, Head of Wix Studio, 2 years ago in episode 112.

We dove in and put our first site on Wix Studio and so far, like it a lot.

But... there are still some issues.

There are some things that are no-brainers for agencies to want to use Wix Studio, but there are also some deal breakers depending on who you are and what your agency requires.

One thing we really like about Wix is their ability to take criticism and feedback and actually do something about it.

This episode serves as just that.

Switching from Low Cost, High Volume to High Cost, Boutique Agency (ft. Cesar Gil w/ Symphony Advertising) | Episode 19016 janv. 202601:46:00

[Cold open [Best gift cards // Is ad blocker piracy?] ends at 12:52.]

Cesar is back by popular demand for the 3rd time because we need updates!

Last we spoke, everything was on fire at his agency. He was stressed and dealing with over 100 clients with a small team. Employees weren't working out, clients were churning, and to make matters more complicated, he had a baby on the way.

Something had to change.

On this episode, Cesar gives us an update on how the agency is doing and what directions he's moving in to fix the holes in his agency's ship.

Understanding Value-Based Pricing for Agencies (ft. Jonathan Stark w/ "Hourly Billing is Nuts") | Episode 18909 janv. 202601:41:47

We are big fans of the productized service model and equate our rate to a set hourly limitation and internal billable rate. This isn't a secret. We've had multiple episodes on why knowing your internal hourly rate is crucial.

Then we received an email from Jonathan Stark's team wanting to tell us why hourly billing and fixation on hourly tracking is "nuts".

For an hour and a half, Jonathan steps into the ring with us to challenge the idea of hourly billing and time tracking with his value-based pricing model.

Does he convince us his way is better? Or do we make him see the error of his value-based ways?

When Does a Marketing Agency Need to Hire a Fractional CFO? (ft. Jody Grunden, CPA w/ Anders) | Episode 18802 janv. 202601:22:11

Every big agency has a CFO but what does a CFO really do? When do you need one?

We sit down with Jody Grunden, a virtual CFO for creative and marketing agencies to explain in detail.

Jody has been a fractional CFO for business and agencies for over 20 years. We sit down and talk to him to learn why an agency might want a CFO and the difference between a fractional one versus an internal one.

Jody talks about the "messy" range between $1.5m and $5m where operations and finances start breaking for most agencies and how to get through it.

We also press him on tips and strategies agencies can start doing today to avoid the chaos of hitting that range and falling into plummeting profitability as most agencies begin to scale.

8-Figure Law Firm Agency with $100k Monthly SEO Retainers (ft. Jason Hennessey w/ Hennessey Digital) | Episode 18726 déc. 202501:23:25

Jason has the story almost every agency owner is after. He grew his first agency to $5m and sold it. Then started a second one and within 5 years, he was at $5m in revenue again.

After another 5 years, his agency was at $20m.

Jason sold his $20m law firm agency to a private equity firm and took a seat on the board yet still continues to lead his own agency.

Some crazy facts about the legal space: law firms are spending $100k per month in SEO retainers. These same law firms are spending $2m per month in PPC. Jason considers his agency the Lamborghini of law firm agencies but has a rinse-and-repeat McDonald's style strategy for his legal clients.

After learning about his amazing story and being envious of everything he's accomplished, we dive into what it takes to get clients in the legal space, manage them, and what the best ways to drive results for them are.

This Email Platform is Built for Agencies (ft. Gyula Németh w/ BlueFox Email) | Episode 18512 déc. 202501:50:41

**Cold Open (Cloudflare Down Again and AI Stuff)**

**Skip the Cold Open at 8:45**

6 Months ago we decided to dive into the world of email marketing. The problem was that we couldn't find a Email Service Provider (ESP) that catered to agencies.

We needed subaccounts and a pricing structure that didn't absolutely drain our bank accounts.

That's where we met Gyula from BlueFox.

Gyula has designed an email platform specifically for agencies and it's unlike anything we've seen. It really is agency focused.

Everyone is Lying About AI | Episode 18405 déc. 202500:59:04

**Cold Open (Cody's Too Sexy for His Shirts)**

**Skip the Cold Open at 6:41**

As we've been diving into integrating AI into our agency, we've realized that everyone on the internet seems to be lying about how they're using AI.

When we ask about specific operational applications outside of spamming prospects or scraping lists, we're met with a mix of content production applications and crickets.

We don't think AI is nearly where people are pretending it is on LinkedIn but we do talk a bit about how we're using it in our agency NOT related to sales or content production.

WordPress vs Wix Studio: Which is Better for Agencies? (ft. Roger Williams w/ Kinsta) | Episode 18328 nov. 202501:24:49

**Cold Open (Colorado and Dream Crushers)**

**Skip the Cold Open at 10:57**

Kinsta (a WordPress hosting solution) reached out to us to be an agency partner. We had to break the news to them that our agency is transitioning to the Wix Studio platform.

Roger Willams from Kinsta challenged us on that decision and before we let him keep talking, we asked him to duke it out with us on the podcast in an unfiltered and unedited debate.

Wix Studio or WordPress? Which is better for agencies?

If Wix isn't good for agencies? Why after 7 years are we switching? If Wix is so good for agencies, why are 40% of all websites in the world WordPress???

-----

This episode is releasing during Kinsta's Black Friday sale and if you're ...one of those... WordPress agencies... we highly recommend checking out their hosting deals.

They're giving away 6 months of FREE hosting with an annual plan (or half off per month for 6 months on the monthly plans).

Improving Client Onboarding and Reducing Sales Friction with Better File-Sharing (ft. Elston Baretto w/ Tiiny Host) | Episode 18221 nov. 202501:30:53
  • Clients unable to access Google Drive because they don't have Gmail...
  • Clients unable to send files because they don't have Dropbox...

These are some of the inefficiencies we've been dealing with in our agency and just a few of the things Tiiny Host solves.

This week, we bring Tiiny Host CEO and Founder, Elston Baretto, onto the podcast to talk about what it is, why he decided to take on Google Drive and Dropbox, and why Tiiny Host is a must-have for agencies.

Growing With and Apart From Clients | Episode 18114 nov. 202501:10:18

**Cold Open (Ninja Forms bugs, swag, and the great email fiasco)**

**Skip the Cold Open at 14:13**

This week, we dive into something every agency owner eventually faces: what happens when you and your clients grow, but not always in the same direction.

We break down the difference between growing with clients versus growing apart, how productization sharpens those shifts, and why "but I’ve been with you for years" cannot be a free pass.

If you have ever felt guilty about enforcing new rules, nervous about client pushback, or unsure when to adapt versus when to hold the line, this one will resonate.
