Ep 114. 27 Adventures Before 2027: Make Q4 Wildly Adventurous07 Oct 202600:34:18

What if you didn’t wait until January to get back into adventure mode?

Inspired by Karin Nordin’s “27 Before 2027” concept, I’m putting an adventurous spin on the challenge and creating my own list of 27 adventures, experiences, and future-self favors to help me finish 2026 feeling strong, energized, and excited about adventures ahead.

In this episode, I’m sharing what’s making my list—from climbing my first outdoor 5.12 and backpacking the Grand Canyon to planning future adventures, replacing old gear, and making time for smaller outdoor memories along the way. Plus, I’ll give you plenty of ideas to start brainstorming your own 27 Adventures Before 2027.

In this episode, we’ll talk about:

  • How the “27 Before 2027” concept works and my adventurous spin on it
  • Choosing how you want to feel heading into 2027
  • Why Q4 doesn’t have to mean putting your adventurous life on pause
  • Ideas for movement, outdoor memories, new skills, gear projects, and future adventures
  • Why putting a 2027 adventure on the calendar now can create momentum all winter
  • How to brainstorm your list without turning it into another perfectionist to-do list

Your challenge: Brainstorm your own 27 Adventures Before 2027 and make the last few months of the year wildly adventurous.

Ep 112. 200+ Miles Alone: What It Really Feels Like to Finish the JMT (Jeanna's Story)23 Sep 202601:24:19

In this episode, I sit down with my client Jeanna, a traveling nurse who lives out of her van between assignments, to talk about the trip that changed everything: her solo thru-hike of the entire John Muir Trail. Here's the wild part. This wasn't just her first solo thru-hike. It was her first solo backpacking trip, period.

We get into the real, unfiltered story: the spreadsheet she painstakingly built to plan every campsite, the journal she cut in half to save weight, the night terror she had at what she's now convinced might have been a haunted campsite, and the moment on trail where she seriously considered quitting, plus the mental tools she used to talk herself back into it.

We also talk about what it's really like to be alone out there (spoiler: you're never quite as alone as you think), and what it felt like to finally stand at the finish line after 200+ miles solo.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Why Jeanna decided her first-ever solo backpacking trip would be the entire JMT, no smaller trips first
  • How she planned her permits, resupplies, and a 30-day permit for a 21-day itinerary (and why the extra buffer mattered)
  • Her night terror story and the "haunted campsite" she still thinks about
  • The mental tools, including the 50-50 and "what if I just…" technique, she used the moment she wanted to quit
  • What it actually felt like to cross the finish line, and why she ended up sobbing alone for 20 minutes
  • Why solo doesn't mean lonely, and how trail community carried her through

If you've ever wondered whether you're "ready" to do something like this, then you're going to love this episode with Jeanna.

Ep 111. Hot Topics in Our Backpacking Badass Community: Big Trip Season, Gear Talk & Fall Backpacking Plans16 Sep 202600:42:23

In this week's episode of The Adventurous Reinvention Podcast, I'm bringing back one of your favorite series—Hot Topics in Our Backpacking Badass Community—with my teammate Kellie.

We recorded this one together in person in LA, so you're getting our real, unscripted takes on what's been coming up with our students lately.

Here's what we cover:

  • Big Trip Season: Why we're seeing so many students tackle bucket-list trails this year: from the John Muir Trail to Mount Whitney to an O-Trek in Patagonia, and what it takes to go from your first overnight to your dream adventure.
  • Talking About Your Goals: How Kellie's Havasu Falls trip came together after simply telling people what she wanted to do, and why sharing your goals (even before you're ready) can change everything.
  • Gear Talk: Our honest take on sports bras that actually work for backpacking, plus how we organize gear in small spaces without a dedicated gear room.
  • Fall Transition: What our training and trip planning looks like as we shift out of summer programming and into fall backpacking season.

Whether you're planning your next big trip or just trying to figure out your gear setup, you'll walk away from this one with plenty to think about.

Ep 110. MVP. What It’s Really Like to Hit the SOS Button: Lessons from a Backcountry Rescue with Meg Atteberry09 Sep 202601:19:56

This week we're publishing an MVP episode where I’m joined by outdoor writer and long-time mountain adventurer Meg Atteberry for a raw, behind-the-scenes look at what really happens when you have to hit the SOS button in the backcountry.

On day six of a seven-day high route in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, Meg and her friend found themselves in a true emergency — an injury miles from any trail, shifting weather, complex alpine terrain, and a 20-hour Search and Rescue operation that forced them to rely on every ounce of their experience, preparation, and mental steadiness.

This conversation is honest, gripping, and packed with trail-tested insight. If you’ve ever wondered “How would I actually handle something like this?” — or you want to feel more prepared and self-reliant on your own trips — this episode is a must-listen.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • The exact moment Meg realized they needed Search & Rescue
  • How she made the call early and why that decision mattered
  • What the terrain, weather, and rescue logistics were really like
  • How they chose a safe camp to overnight during the emergency
  • The mental rollercoaster of staying calm when adrenaline crashes
  • Why preparation beats “toughing it out” every time
  • The gear, systems, and decisions that made a real difference
  • What most people don’t understand about wilderness rescues
  • Meg’s biggest takeaways now that she’s had time to reflect

Ep 109. Why Some Women Come Back From the Backcountry Changed — and Some Just Come Back Depleted26 Aug 202600:42:55

In this episode, I'm breaking down something that showed up over and over again across our entire 2026 ARE trip season: two women can do the exact same hike — same trail, same weather, same physical challenge — and come home with completely different experiences. One depleted and complaining about the bugs. One lit up and already planning her next trip. Same conditions. Different lens.

Every single season, without fail, we watch this play out — the women who set their mindset before the trailhead have a fundamentally different trip than the women who just show up and hope for the best. So I want to break down why that happens, and what you can actually do about it.

Whether you've got a big trip coming up or you're just tired of coming home from adventures feeling like you missed something, this episode will give you a practical way to shape your experience before it even starts.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Why the lens you bring to a hike matters more than the conditions you hike in
  • The real science behind it — how your brain's reticular activating system decides what you notice on trail
  • Student mindset vs. investor mindset, and why one leaves your experience up to chance
  • A real story from one of our trips where a freak storm could have wrecked the group's mood — and didn't
  • The simple journaling exercise we have clients do before every trip to set their lens on purpose
  • A 5-minute trailhead practice you can start using on your very next hike

Ep 108. Setting Big Goals Without Losing Joy: Lessons From Climbing 5.1205 Aug 202600:54:56

Today I'm joined by one of my closest friends, Charlie, who I met almost by accident in a local climbing league, and who's since become the person I train, plan, and chase big goals alongside.

We're pulling back the curtain on our friendship: how it started, how it turned into a full-blown climbing partnership, and how a casual "let's climb together" turned into a shared, audacious goal — sending our first 5.12.

This episode isn't just for climbers. It's about what happens when you stop trying to do hard things alone, and what changes in your belief system when you find someone who's willing to go there with you.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Why finding the right partner can shift what you believe is possible for yourself
  • How to actually go about finding a solid outdoor partner (and why proximity beats waiting for the "perfect" fit)
  • The difference between wanting a goal and believing it's already happening
  • Why leaving your ego behind is the real unlock in any partnership
  • How tracking "micro progress" changes the way your brain sees a big goal
  • What it looks like to go from "this could happen someday" to "this is happening"

Ep 107. Do B-Minus Work: How to Beat Perfectionism and Still Hit the Trail29 Jul 202600:48:49

One of the most common patterns we see in Backpacking Badass and the Adventurous Reinvention Experience isn't a gear problem, a fitness problem, or an education problem — it's perfectionism, and it quietly derails more big goals than bad weather ever could.

In this episode, my team member Kellie is taking over the mic solo to talk about what she's learned from doing halfway check-ins with our biggest coaching group yet — 36 women training for a real backpacking trip while juggling life, work, and everything in between.

Every single year, without fail, we hear the same handful of messages back: I'm behind. I'm not showing up how I thought I would. I feel like I'm failing. So we want to break down why that happens and what to do about it.

Whether you're mid-training for your first backpacking trip or working toward any big goal that's started to feel messier than you pictured, this episode will help you keep going without needing everything to go perfectly.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Why perfectionism, not gear or fitness, is the real reason most women stall out on big goals
  • What perfectionism actually sounds like in real client check-ins (and why you've probably said it too)
  • The "B-minus work" shift: why done imperfectly beats not done at all
  • How to build an MVP (minimum viable) plan instead of chasing the fantasy version of your week
  • Why tracking your wins (not just the gaps) rewires how your brain sees your progress
  • The real skill that gets you to the trailhead, and keeps getting you to the next one

Ep 106. Hiking and Backpacking With Your Dog: Is Your Pup Actually Ready?22 Jul 202601:26:22

One of the most common questions we get inside Backpacking Badass (and in my DMs) is how to know if your pup can handle hiking and backpacking, and how to get them ready if they're not there yet.

In this episode, I'm joined by Kellie, one of our coaches at She Dreams of Alpine, to break down everything you need to know about adventuring with your dog. Between the two of us, we've raised sight hounds, reactive rescues, and everything in between, so we're pulling from real experience, not just theory.

We'll talk about how to build up your dog's mileage and confidence the right way, the off-leash debate, how to handle encounters with loose dogs on trail, and the safety gear and communication tools that make a real difference out there.

Whether you're prepping your first pup for their first overnight or you've got a seasoned trail dog, this episode will help you adventure smarter, safer, and with way more confidence for both of you.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • How to slowly and safely build your dog's hiking and backpacking readiness, from short walks to overnight trips
  • Why we're team on-leash (and the wildlife, safety, and etiquette reasons behind it)
  • What to actually do when a loose dog runs up to you and your pup on trail
  • The gear and visual cues (like vests and patches) that can protect anxious or reactive dogs
  • Why using your dog as a "safety plan" for solo hiking needs a second look

So next time someone asks you "is your dog ready for this?", you'll have real, trail-tested answers, for both of you.

Ep 105. MVP. How to Make Uphill Hiking Feel Easier (Without More Training)15 Jul 202600:42:57

Ever stared up at a steep climb on trail and felt that sinking sense of dread? You’re not alone. For many new (and even experienced) hikers and backpackers, uphills can feel like the toughest part of the journey. But here’s the truth: it’s not just about stronger legs or more training, it’s about the mindset you bring to the climb.

In this episode, I’m sharing the exact mental shifts and trail-tested strategies I use (and teach my clients) to make uphill hiking not only easier, but even enjoyable.

We’ll talk about how to redirect negative self-talk, fuel yourself with powerful thoughts, and tap into that “let’s freaking go” energy that transforms hard climbs into moments of growth and empowerment.

Whether you’re new to backpacking or taking on your biggest summit yet, this episode will help you reframe the uphill struggle into something that builds your confidence and fuels your adventure, on the trail and in life.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • The two different ways you can meet an uphill hike—and why one will always leave you drained.
  • How to reframe “this is hard” into “this is hard AND I’m capable.”
  • Simple mindset strategies that keep you moving forward.
  • Why the mountains are the perfect training ground for building real-life resilience.
  • How to shift from resisting the climb to embracing it as proof of your strength.

So the next time you’re staring up at a big mountain pass, you’ll have the tools to ditch the dread and step into your power.

Ep 104. I Set Big Adventure Goals in January. Here's the Brutally Honest Mid-Year Report Card.01 Jul 202600:32:07

It's officially halfway through the year, and Allison is pulling out her 2026 adventure goals list for an honest gut-check.

In this episode, she walks through everything from training her puppy Oliver for backpacking trips to her big goal of leading a 5.12 outside—sharing what's on track, what she's let go of, and why this kind of mid-year recommitment matters more than the goal-setting itself. Consider this your nudge to pull up your own list.

In this episode, I share:

  • The simple color-coding system I use to honestly review my goals (green, yellow, red, and black)
  • How training Oliver for backpacking and travel has actually gone—the wins and the "we're still working on it" moments
  • Behind-the-scenes on our sold-out Joshua Tree retreat and what made our Kalymnos international trip so unforgettable
  • Why I hired a climbing coach and what my training plan toward leading a 5.12 outside actually looks like
  • What I dropped completely from my goals list this year (and why "bless and release" matters)
  • A behind-the-scenes look at how the Adventurous Reinvention Experience cohort is going with 36 women enrolled
  • Why a mid-year check-in is more valuable than your original goal-setting session

Ep 103. Barr Trail to Pikes Peak Day 2 (Trail Series). Summit and Back: Cloud Inversions, Altitude Woes, & a Donut Race Against the Train24 Jun 202600:15:54

Welcome to the Bougie Barr Camp to Pikes Peak Trail Series — a set of 2 mini episodes from a low-key, high-comfort backpacking weekend in Colorado with my friends Meg and Charlie.

Day 2 was summit day — the whole reason for the bougie detour.

We were up at 4am and on trail by 5:10, climbing through overnight storm leftovers, a sunrise cloud inversion that put us "in the meat of the sandwich" between two cloud layers, and every kind of weather in small doses — wind, snow, thunder, rain, each lasting about two seconds.

Above treeline the switchbacks felt endless, mild altitude sickness showed up uninvited, and the microspikes came out for the last snowy mile. We summited just as the cog train pulled in and sprinted for the visitor center to beat the crowd to donuts. 3,700 feet of gain, almost 12 miles, and a well-earned nap back at camp before spaghetti and the best bread of the trip.

In this episode:

  • A sunrise cloud inversion and back-to-back microclimates
  • Altitude nausea above treeline (even for a Colorado Springs local)
  • Microspikes, switchbacks, and a summit photo finish vs. the cog train
  • Donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate standing in for pancakes
  • Reflections on bougie backpacking, mom-life perspective shifts, and planning the next "insane" trip

🎧 Hit play for summit views, weather roulette, and a well-earned donut victory.

Ep 102. Barr Trail to Pikes Peak Day 1 (Trail Series). Trailhead to Barr Camp: Embracing Bougie Basecamp Energy17 Jun 202600:24:39

Welcome to the Bougie Barr Camp to Pikes Peak Trail Series — a set of 2 mini episodes from a low-key, high-comfort backpacking weekend in Colorado with my friends Meg and Charlie.

The premise: tackle Pikes Peak via Barr Trail over three days instead of one, with pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners built in, because if Barr Camp's going to cook for us, we're letting them.

Day 1 was the hike in — a trailhead GI emergency (we kept it real), $40 trailhead parking, 7 miles and 3,500 feet of gain up to Barr Camp, and three single-person tents pitched so close we were basically sharing one.

We talked through pre-trip chaos, why we keep saying yes to "insane" trips, period-brain on trail, and why small backpacking trips still count as real ones.

In this episode:

  • Trailhead diarrhea and a very honest play-by-play
  • The case for "bougie backpacking" (pancakes, spaghetti, a cabin we didn't even need)
  • 7 miles, 3,500 feet, and stale BeFree filters
  • Three solo tents smushed into one squad
  • Why "small" trips are still real backpacking trips

🎧 Hit play for trailhead chaos, deep commitment to the bit, and the calm before summit day.

Ep 101. Should You Carry a Gun Hiking Solo? The Real Question Women Are Actually Asking27 May 202600:32:26

By now you've seen it. Some version of this plays out in every solo hiking forum, every Facebook group, every comment section where a woman dares to ask about going outside alone.

👉 "Just bring a gun."

This advice is lazy. It's often irresponsible. And it completely misses what women are actually asking.

Because the question underneath the gun question? It's not really about firearms at all. It's: Am I safe enough to do this alone?

In this episode, I'm answering that, for real. With expert-backed research, actual statistics, and the reframe that I think changes everything about how women approach safety on trail.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why "just bring a gun" is the outdoor version of a get-rich-quick scheme, and what the research actually shows about firearms and personal safety for women
  • The data Nicole Snell (Girls Fight Back) brought to our conversation that stopped me in my tracks
  • What wildlife safety expert Kim Titchener found when researchers studied hundreds of firearms-in-bear-encounters cases
  • Why both Nicole and Kim (independently, from completely different fields) landed on the exact same answer for what actually keeps solo women safe
  • The "don't outsource your safety" philosophy and what building real safety from the inside out actually looks like in practice
  • What's coming at the free 2026 Solo Hiker Summit, June 3–5 — and why Nicole and Kim are both presenting there this year

This one is for you. For your hiking partner. And for every Todd in your comment section.

Ep 100. Alpine Divorce Won't Happen to You If You Do This22 May 202600:41:16

By now you've probably seen it. The TikTok videos. The comments flooding in. Women sharing their own versions of being left behind on a trail by someone they trusted. Alpine Divorce is real.

But here's what nobody in that conversation is actually saying, and it's the thing I've been talking about since the very beginning of She Dreams of Alpine.

Every single one of those stories has one thing in common. And it is not only about having a bad boyfriend...

In this episode, I'm giving you the reframe that changes everything, and the answer that makes you immune to this. Not just Alpine Divorce, but the much bigger story women have been told about who the outdoors is and isn't safe for.

In this episode, I share:

  • What Alpine Divorce actually is and why women's fear response to this trend makes complete sense
  • The powerful reframe and answer that changes everything and that makes you immune to Alpine Divorce
  • A personal story from 2015: the 43-mile trip I took as the only woman in a group of four guys, why I was terrified going in, and what actually happened out there
  • Why the "choose the bear" conversation and Alpine Divorce are really the same conversation, and what both of them are pointing to underneath
  • The story we've been told as women about the outdoors, who it's safe for, and why I think it's time we rewrite it
  • What's coming at the free Solo Hiker Summit, June 3–5 — and why this episode is a preview of exactly what we're going to dig into there

In today’s episode, I’m taking you back to the solo backpacking trip that shaped me in all the best ways, my very first overnight alone on the trail.

Ep 098. What We Learned About Fear From 300+ Women Who Want to Go Solo Backpacking06 May 202600:38:40

This week's episode is a takeover — and a good one.

Kellie, community manager at She Dreams of Alpine and coach inside the Backpacking Badass Program, steps in (while Allison is off with clients on a rock climbing retreat in Greece) to share something we think is one of the most important episodes we've published.

A few years ago, we surveyed over 300 women about what was actually stopping them from solo hiking and backpacking. We didn't just skim the data, we read every single response. And what we found stopped us cold.

This episode isn't tips. It's a mirror. It's for the woman who has been saying "someday" for years and just needs to know she's not alone.

In this episode, Kellie covers:

  • The fear nobody in the outdoor industry is openly addressing, and why it's time that changes
  • What the real statistics say about safety for women on the trail (it's not what you've been told)
  • Why solo hiking and backpacking are acts of reclamation for so many women, and what word showed up again and again in survey responses that says everything
  • The loneliness piece... and how it's not just about being alone on the trail, it's about having no one who gets it
  • And so much more!

Ep 097. Why Your Adventure Goal Lost Steam (And How to Get It Back)29 Apr 202600:56:55

You had a goal. You were fired up. And somewhere between January and now… the momentum quietly disappeared.

In this mid-year check-in episode, I'm breaking down the six real reasons women stall on their adventure goals, and none of them are what your brain is currently telling you.

Whether you're stuck before you've started or losing steam mid-pursuit, this one's for you.

In this episode, I share:

  • The coaching conversation that opened this episode, and why "I have no motivation" is almost never the real problem
  • What's really happening when outside voices, scary news stories, or a worried partner start to drown out your own inner knowing
  • How to move your goal from the "I'd love to" category into the "this is already decided" category
  • A real story from inside the Backpacking Badass community: a client who almost didn't go on her first solo trip, and what happened when she did
  • Why identity has to come before the adventures (not after), and what it looks like to start acting as the woman you're becoming right now
  • What pre-trip resistance actually means (hint: it's not a sign you should back out)
  • A mid-year invitation: what's coming in June that could change everything for your summer adventure goals

Ep 096. Exploring the “What’s Next?” Phase of Life: Marissa’s Story (Inside the Adventurous Reinvention Experience)15 Apr 202601:13:59

In this episode, I’m sitting down with Marissa, a past student of the Adventurous Reinvention Experience, to talk about what it looked like for her to navigate that really common (but rarely talked about) season of life… The “what’s next?” phase.

Marissa wasn’t unhappy with her life. She had a solid career, a stable path, and had checked a lot of the boxes she thought she was supposed to check.

But underneath that, there was this growing sense of curiosity… mixed with a lot of overthinking… about what she actually wanted her life to look like moving forward.

And instead of waiting for clarity to magically appear… she chose to step into the process anyway.

Inside this conversation, we talk about:

  • What it actually feels like to be in the “what’s next?” phase of life
  • How overthinking can keep you stuck (and how to start moving through it)
  • The power of giving yourself space to explore new possibilities—without needing a perfect plan
  • What she learned through the coaching process inside ARE
  • Building confidence and competence in the outdoors (even without growing up with it)
  • How surrounding yourself with the right community can completely shift your perspective
  • And what it looks like to start taking aligned action… even when things still feel uncertain

This episode is such a real, honest look at what it means to feel the pull for something more—and to start exploring that, even before you have it all figured out.

💛 If You’re Craving Something More…

If you’ve been feeling the pull for more connection, more adventure, or a different kind of summer… The Adventurous Reinvention Experience is exactly where we explore that.

Ep 095. She Started Backpacking at 58: Nancie’s Story (Inside the Adventurous Reinvention Experience)09 Apr 202601:21:11

In this episode, I’m sitting down with Nancie, a past student of the Adventurous Reinvention Experience, to talk about what it looked like for her to start backpacking at 58… and completely shift how she sees herself and what she’s capable of.

Nancie didn’t grow up as a “backpacker,” and she didn’t come into this experience feeling fully confident or ready.

She came in with curiosity, a deep pull toward adventure, and a quiet question so many women ask themselves at some point: Is it too late for me to start something like this?

And instead of waiting to feel ready… she chose to begin anyway.

Inside this conversation, we talk about:

  • What her first solo backpacking trip was really like (including not sleeping at all 😅)
  • Starting something new in your late 50s and navigating the fear that comes with it
  • What she learned about resilience, adaptability, and thinking on her feet
  • The power of surrounding yourself with women who get it
  • How doing hard things on the trail translated into more confidence in everyday life
  • Why it’s never too late to choose yourself and go after what you really want

This is such a powerful example of what becomes possible when you stop waiting for the “perfect time”… and start where you are.

💛 If You’re Craving Something More…

If you’ve been feeling the pull for more connection, more adventure, or a different kind of summer… The Adventurous Reinvention Experience is exactly where we explore that.

Ep 094. From Beginner to Leader in the Outdoors: Sunny’s Story (Inside the Adventurous Reinvention Experience)07 Apr 202601:24:54

In this episode, I’m sitting down with Sunny, a past student of the Adventurous Reinvention Experience, to talk about what it looked like for her to step into leadership in the outdoors and become the kind of woman she didn’t always see represented there.

Sunny didn’t come into this experience feeling like she fully belonged in the outdoor space. She came in with curiosity, a desire to grow, and a deeper calling to build community and lead in a way that felt aligned with who she is.

And instead of waiting to feel ready… she chose to step forward anyway.

Inside this conversation, we talk about:

  • What her first backpacking experience was really like (and why it pushed her to want more)
  • The desire to become a leader and what that actually means in the outdoors
  • Navigating the fear of not belonging and choosing to show up anyway
  • How pushing herself physically on the trail unlocked a deeper level of self-trust
  • The power of community, vulnerability, and collective support in hard moments
  • What it looks like to trust your intuition and honor your own pace
  • How this experience shaped the way she leads and shows up in her life now

This is such a powerful example of what becomes possible when you stop waiting to feel ready… and start becoming the person you needed.

Ep 093. The Value of Reinventing Yourself Again and Again02 Apr 202601:48:50

In this episode, I’m joined by Kellie from the She Dreams of Alpine team for a raw, honest, and deeply personal conversation about what it actually looks like to reinvent yourself, again and again.

We’re pulling back the curtain on our own reinvention journeys… not just the highlight reel, but the messy, uncomfortable, and transformative moments that shaped who we are today.

Because reinvention isn’t just one big life overhaul. It’s a practice, a way of living, and a decision about your life that you get to make over and over again.

Inside this conversation, we explore:

  • What reinvention really means (and why it doesn’t have to be dramatic to be powerful)
  • The difference between big life pivots and subtle identity shifts
  • Why resistance is actually a sign you’re on the edge of growth
  • How reinvention compounds over time (and why doing it again matters)
  • Real-life examples of navigating grief, relationships, fear, and identity evolution
  • How curiosity (not clarity) is often the starting point
  • The role of community in accelerating growth and healing
  • What it looks like to actively choose your life instead of living on autopilot

This episode is a reminder that you are not a fixed version of yourself. You are allowed to evolve. To change your mind. To want something different. To become someone new, again and again. And maybe most importantly… you don’t have to do it alone.

Ep 092. From Craving Community to Creating It: Carey’s Story (Inside the Adventurous Reinvention Experience)31 Mar 202601:10:32

In this episode, I’m sitting down with Carey, a past student of the Adventurous Reinvention Experience, to talk about what it looked like for her to go all in on building community during a major life transition, and how that decision changed everything.

Carey didn’t come into this experience needing backpacking skills. She came in craving connection, friendship, and a sense of belonging during a season where everything in her life felt uncertain.

And instead of waiting for that community to magically appear… She created it.

Inside this conversation, we talk about:

  • What it looked like to navigate a major life transition and choose something new
  • The fear of not belonging (and what actually happened instead)
  • How she built real, meaningful friendships before the backpacking trip even started
  • The unexpected ways adventure can accelerate connection and growth
  • What happened after the experience—new friendships, new adventures, and even a new identity as a climber

This is such a powerful example of what becomes possible when you stop waiting… and start saying yes to the life you actually want.

Ep 091. BTS: Our 2025 ARE Intermediate Trip (Alpine Lakes, Big Miles & Reinvention)18 Mar 202601:20:03

In this episode, Allison and her team member Kellie sit down fresh off the trail in Allison’s van to recap the 2025 Adventurous Reinvention Experience Intermediate Backpacking Trip in the Eastern Sierra.

After spending nearly two weeks in the mountains guiding both beginner and intermediate groups, they recorded this conversation while the memories were still fresh — sharing what actually happens on these trips beyond the highlight photos.

From gear shakedowns and acclimatization days to alpine lake swims, big climbs, and late-night conversations under the stars, this episode offers a behind-the-scenes look at the adventure, challenge, and connection that unfolds when a group of women spend several days together in the wilderness.

Because the Adventurous Reinvention Experience isn’t just a backpacking trip. It’s a summer-long container for personal reinvention, confidence building, and community, with the backpacking adventure becoming the physical expression of that growth.

In this episode, we talk about:

  1. What a typical ARE backpacking retreat itinerary looks like
  2. The 5-day route last year's group took through the Eastern Sierra lake basin
  3. Why alpine lake swims became a theme of this year’s trip
  4. How a group of women who met on the internet became adventure friends in a few days
  5. The powerful conversations that happen when women unplug and spend time in the mountains

And so much more...

By the end of the trip, these women didn’t just finish a backpacking route.

They walked away with new confidence, new friendships, and a deeper sense of what they’re capable of.

Ep 090. Sometimes the Most Valuable Adventure Is the One That “Fails” — An Adventurous Reinvention Story11 Mar 202600:29:31

Sometimes the most valuable adventures are the ones that don’t go according to plan.

In this episode, Allison shares the story of a 2023 Adventurous Reinvention Experience backpacking trip that was supposed to summit Mount Whitney… until a powerful storm forced the group to pivot.

What could have felt like a “failed” adventure ended up becoming one of the most valuable mountain experiences her clients have ever had: teaching lessons about resilience, leadership, self-trust, and learning how to make safety decisions in the backcountry.

In this episode, we explore:

  1. Why adventure (and reinvention) requires the willingness to fail
  2. What really happens when a big outdoor goal doesn’t go according to plan
  3. How making safety calls and pivots in the mountains builds real confidence
  4. Why the most meaningful growth often comes from the hardest moments
  5. How the lessons we learn on the trail translate directly into our lives

The goal of adventure isn’t perfection.

It’s growth. It’s courage. It’s discovering what you’re capable of, even when things don’t unfold the way you expected.

Sometimes the adventure that “fails” ends up being the one that changes you the most.

Ep 089. When Adventure Feels Frivolous (And Why It’s Not)04 Mar 202600:17:49

If you've been doom-scrolling, feeling frozen, or wondering whether it's still okay to care about adventure and joy, this episode is for you.

In this episode, Allison shares why aliveness isn't a luxury or an escape, it's actually how we stay strong, grounded, and capable of showing up powerfully in our lives and in the world.

In this episode, we explore:

  1. Why doom-scrolling and freezing your life doesn't make you more informed, it just disconnects you from your power
  2. How building strength, self-trust, and outdoor skills is a form of everyday courage
  3. Why shrinking has never made us safer, and what actually does
  4. How adventure builds the resilience to think clearly, lead, and stand in your values under pressure
  5. Why aliveness is not about pretending things aren't hard... it's about staying connected to yourself inside the hard

If adventure has felt frivolous lately… maybe it's not. Maybe it's training. Maybe it's exactly how you refuse to shrink.

Ep 088. Escalante Route Grand Canyon Day 4 (Trail Series). 4,000 Feet Up & Redwall Switchbacks25 Feb 202600:37:49

This final episode of the Escalante Route Trail Series comes to you from a hotel room—because we climbed all the way out of the Grand Canyon today.

After a very early wake-up, we started hiking in the dark to avoid the heat, stopping for water and breakfast before committing to the long climb out.

What followed was roughly 4,000 feet of elevation gain, endless switchbacks, Redwall crossings, and some of the steepest trail of the entire route.

The climb was shaded, rugged, and relentless—but also deeply satisfying. Along the way, we passed mining relics, encountered a tarantula, exchanged trail banter with other hikers, and slowly gained a full perspective of everything we had just traveled through.

We topped out tired, proud, and already nostalgic.

In this episode:

  1. A pre-dawn start to beat the heat
  2. Climbing through the Redwall and Horseshoe Mesa
  3. Steep switchbacks and relentless elevation gain
  4. Wildlife sightings and trail humor
  5. Reflections on finishing the Escalante Route

🎧 Hit play for the final push—4,000 feet up, one last grind, and the quiet satisfaction of completing the Escalante Route.

Ep 087. Escalante Route Grand Canyon Day 3 (Trail Series). Slot Canyons, the Papago Slide & Hauling Water to the Tonto18 Feb 202600:32:54

This is Day 3 of the Escalante Route Trail Series, recorded under the stars at a dry camp high above the river.

Today was a shorter-mileage day that packed in a lot of technical terrain. We left our beach paradise behind and made our way into 75 Mile Canyon, hiking high above towering walls before dropping down into the slot itself—a highlight for all of us.

From there, the day became a series of decisions: choosing a low route, navigating route-finding terrain, scrambling short but consequential rock sections, and finally facing the infamous Papago Slide—a steep, loose gully that demanded focus and patience.

After timing heat and shade carefully, we hauled water up to the Tonto Platform and settled into a dry camp with sweeping canyon views and one of the most colorful sunsets of the trip.

In this episode:

  1. Slot canyon travel in 75 Mile Canyon
  2. Choosing low routes and navigating off-trail terrain
  3. Scrambling with packs and managing exposure
  4. Descending the Papago Slide
  5. Water hauling and camping high on the Tonto

🎧 Hit play for a technical canyon day full of big decisions, steep terrain, and expansive views from a quiet dry camp.

Ep 086. Escalante Route Grand Canyon Day 2 (Trail Series). Side Quests & a Private River Beach Campsite11 Feb 202600:25:44

Welcome back to the Escalante Route Trail Series—daily trail dispatches from our backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon.

Day 2 delivered everything we love about canyon travel: mellow morning miles, ambitious side quests, and terrain that looks impossible until the route reveals itself.

We eased out of camp through shaded river walking before climbing up toward Unkar Hill and the ruins, detouring in true Grand Canyon fashion to chase pottery dreams and expansive viewpoints. From there, we tackled long, off-camber traverses and an unrelenting descent back toward the river.

And then... reward. We landed at one of the most unexpectedly luxurious campsites imaginable: a private-feeling river beach complete with swimming, sunbathing, yoga, and the sound of rapids in the background.

In this episode:

  1. Side quests to ruins and canyon overlooks
  2. Route finding across improbable terrain
  3. Long traverses and knee-testing descents
  4. Swimming and lounging at a dream river camp
  5. Reflections on luxury, solitude, and desert magic

🎧 Hit play for side quests, classic Grand Canyon route-finding, and one of the best campsites of the entire trip.

Ep 085. Escalante Route Grand Canyon Day 1 (Trail Series). 5,000 Feet Down & Birthday Cake on the River04 Feb 202600:23:53

Welcome to the Escalante Route Trail Series—a special set of episodes recorded on-trail during a backpacking trip deep in the Grand Canyon.

In this series, I’m bringing you along day by day as my friends and I hike the Escalante Route, sharing the real-time experiences, trail conversations, and behind-the-scenes moments from camp each night.

Day 1 was all about the descent.

After a shuttle shuffle and a later-than-ideal start, we dropped nearly 5,000 feet from the rim down to the Colorado River via the Tanner Trail.

The miles were straightforward but steep, with barking knees, tired ankles, and a whole lot of anticipation as the canyon opened up below us.

We were blessed with cloud cover, cooler-than-expected temps, and an early arrival at camp Tanner Beach where we celebrated birthdays, stood knee-deep in the river, and leaned fully into Type 1 fun.

In this episode:

  1. A downhill-heavy first day into the Grand Canyon
  2. Managing heat, water, and expectations
  3. Birthday cake in the backcountry
  4. First impressions of canyon scale and desert vibes
  5. Settling into camp early and watching the light fade

🎧 Hit play to kick off the Escalante Route with a big descent, good weather luck, and a sandy riverside camp.

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Sarah, a Backpacking Badass client whose story perfectly captures what it looks like to step into an Adventure Era after everything changes.

Since joining the Backpacking Badass Program, Sarah has gone from total beginner to:

  1. Leading her very first backpacking trip within months
  2. Building a real adventure community of women she met through the program
  3. Stepping into leadership on trail — and in her life
  4. Using adventure as a catalyst for reinvention, confidence, and self-trust

If you’re in a season of rebuilding…

If you’re craving adventure but unsure where to start…

If you feel the pull toward something bigger, braver, and more alive…

Ep 083. Starting Her Adventure Era in Her 50s: Sherry’s Journey from Beginner to Solo Backpacker14 Jan 202601:13:14

My client Sherry didn’t grow up calling herself “adventurous.”

She started backpacking in her mid-50s with borrowed gear, a lot of nerves, and a quiet pull toward doing something more for herself.

After her first challenging trips, she realized she didn’t just want more adventure... she wanted to feel calm, capable, and confident doing it. That’s when she found the Backpacking Badass Program, began building real skills, and took her very first solo backpacking trip.

Five years later, Sherry has completed solo backpacking trips, section-hiked long trails, trekked in Patagonia, volunteered in remote wilderness settings, and become a mentor to other women starting later in life.

In this episode, we talk about what it actually looks like to build confidence over time, and why it’s never too late to start.

In this episode, we talk about:

  1. Starting backpacking in your 50s (and why it’s not “too late”)
  2. How building skills changed Sherry’s confidence on solo trips
  3. The mindset shifts that made solo backpacking feel safer
  4. Learning to trust yourself in both solo and group adventures
  5. Why small, local adventures can create big momentum
  6. Letting your adventure era evolve as your life and priorities change

Ep 082. What It Actually Means to Be a Backpacking Badass (and How to Become One in 2026)07 Jan 202600:25:52

What does it really mean to be a Backpacking Badass?

In this episode, Allison breaks down why being a Backpacking Badass has nothing to do with being fearless, extreme, or summiting at all costs—and everything to do with self-trust, decision-making, and knowing you have your own back on trail and in life.

If you’ve ever loved the idea of being “badass” but thought, that’s not me, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we cover:

  1. Why the word “badass” is worth reclaiming—especially for women in the outdoors
  2. The difference between being reckless vs. self-trusting on trail
  3. What a Backpacking Badass is not (and why that definition keeps women stuck)
  4. Why your power comes from making decisions, even when failure is possible
  5. How to start stepping into your Adventure Era in 2026 with intention

This episode is a grounded redefinition of what badassery really looks like, and an invitation to step into it for yourself.

In this reflective end-of-year episode, Allison reframes why so many women experienced 2025 as a season of closure, identity shedding, and quiet endings, and why that space matters.

Allison then explores why 2026 is uniquely positioned as a fresh start, a new cycle, and an invitation to step into your next adventurous identity with clarity, courage, and momentum.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  1. Why feeling slower or more inward in 2025 doesn’t mean you fell behind
  2. How “ending” years often create the runway for reinvention
  3. What a true “new beginning” year supports (and what it doesn’t require)
  4. Why adventure is one of the most powerful containers for stepping into a new version of yourself
  5. How to intentionally step into your 2026 Adventure Era, without waiting or outsourcing confidence

Ep 079. Why Backpacking Might Be the Most Important Goal You Set for 202617 Dec 202500:36:59

As we head toward a new year, many of us start thinking about goals, but not all goals are created equal.

In this episode, Allison shares 5 powerful reasons backpacking might be one of the most important goals you set for 2026, whether you’re brand new to backpacking or already love spending time on trail.

This conversation goes beyond backpacking as a hobby and explores how backpacking can become a tool for reinvention, confidence, aliveness, and building a life that feels deeply lived — especially in a world that’s becoming more digital, automated, and optimized by the day.

In this episode, we explore:

  • How backpacking unlocks access to quieter places, deeper wilderness, and new versions of yourself
  • Why backpacking creates real experiences that can’t be automated or simulated by AI
  • How backpacking acts as an identity reset button
  • Why time in the backcountry wakes you back up and reconnects you with presence and aliveness
  • How backpacking builds the foundational skill stack for bigger, bolder adventures

If this episode stirred something in you, consider what kind of year you want 2026 to be... not just productive or optimized, but alive.

Ep 077. What It’s Really Like to Hit the SOS Button: Lessons from a Backcountry Rescue with Meg Atteberry26 Nov 202501:19:56

This week, I’m joined by outdoor writer and long-time mountain adventurer Meg Atteberry for a raw, behind-the-scenes look at what really happens when you have to hit the SOS button in the backcountry.

Ep 075. A Beginner’s First Year of Backpacking: Victoria’s Journey to Confidence & Solo Trips18 Nov 202501:10:52

Today’s episode is a special one because we’re celebrating what’s possible in your very first year of backpacking.

I’m joined by one of our Backpacking Badass students, Victoria, who joined the program during last year’s Black Friday enrollment… and since then, has completely transformed her outdoor life.

Before the program, Victoria had only gone on one beginner overnight with her husband. One year later, she’s planned and led her own 3-day trip in the Eastern Sierra, gone on multiple solo backpacking adventures in Yosemite, the Eastern Sierra, and Zion, and built a brand-new identity around bravery, self-trust, and capability.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What it was like to begin backpacking at 48
  • The moment she realized she could camp and backpack alone
  • How she navigated pre-trip anxiety, fear, and “what ifs”
  • What surprised her most on her first big trip
  • The mindset tools that helped her keep going when things got tough
  • How her confidence has grown through both summit moments and turnaround moments
  • Her plans for future adventures (including the JMT!)

Victoria’s story shows how much is possible when you stop waiting for the perfect circumstances and start building the skills, confidence, and self-trust to create your own adventures.

Ep 074. Do It for the Plot: My 3 Rules for Living an Adventurous Life12 Nov 202500:33:49

What if your life was the greatest adventure story you ever told?

In this reflective episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on how I live (and teach) an adventurous life, not just on the trail, but every damn day.

These are the 3 personal rules I come back to again and again, whether I’m navigating a rainstorm in Scotland, reworking a route mid-backpacking trip, or chasing a goal that is outside my comfort zone.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why “Do it for the plot” is one of my favorite life mantras
  • The mindset shift that helps me embrace plot twists on the trail and in life
  • Real examples from my own adventures
  • How chasing a wild climbing goal transformed my confidence, joy, and identity
  • A reminder that your adventures are about trust—not control
  • Why growth (not perfection) is the point of it all

Ep 073. Adventures that Made Me: My First Backpacking Trip (Half Dome in Yosemite)05 Nov 202500:37:10

Before She Dreams of Alpine ever existed…

Before I called myself a backpacker, an outdoor educator, or a coach

There was one wild, barely-planned backpacking trip that changed the course of my life: Backpacking to Half Dome with zero experience.

In this episode, I’m taking you back to the very beginning—when I said “yes” to a 3-day trip with an overstuffed 45 lb pack and no idea what I was doing.

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t perfect. But it was the spark that lit the fire.

In this episode, I share:

  • The accidental invite that started it all
  • How it felt to hike with no clue what I was doing
  • Why this trip made me fall in love with backpacking, even though it was the hardest thing I had ever done
  • The moment I realized: I want more of this in my life
  • And how it changed everything

If you’ve ever wondered how I got started... or if you’re standing at the edge of your own first “yes”, this story is for you.

Ep 072. West Highland Way Day 8 (Trail Series). Kinlochleven to Fort William: Final Miles, Moody Views & a Fort William Finish29 Oct 202500:23:14

Welcome to the West Highland Way Trail Series—a special set of episodes from my latest long-distance hike across the Scottish Highlands.

I’ll be bringing you along day by day as I hike 100 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, sharing the real-time feels, stories, and behind-the-scenes moments from the trail.

Day 8 brought this West Highland Way journey to a close—and it was everything I wanted it to be.

I hiked the final 15 miles from Kinlochleven to Fort William through mist, muddy trails, and dramatic fall colors. My calves were tight, but my heart was full. From solo stretches to a short chat with a couple from Utah, the day was both reflective and beautiful.

I ended the trip with a cozy hotel stay, a solo seafood dinner, and a bittersweet sense of completion.

In this episode:

  • Misty, moody miles through the Scottish Highlands
  • Calf pain, color-drenched views & trail reflections
  • Walking the final sidewalk stretch into Fort William
  • A solo dinner, final thoughts, and ideas for next time

🎧 Hit play to join me for the final leg of a trail I’d absolutely do again.

Ep 071. West Highland Way Day 7 (Trail Series). Kingshouse to Kinlochleven: Devil’s Staircase, Glencoe Views & a Cozy Night In29 Oct 202500:20:54

Day 7 was short, scenic, and surprisingly dry.

I left Kingshouse late after a slow morning, expecting wind and rain—but instead got blue skies and big views through one of the most iconic stretches of the West Highland Way.

After climbing the Devil’s Staircase and descending into Kinlochleven, I landed in the cutest Airbnb pod, treated myself to Chinese takeaway, and enjoyed a quiet, solo night in.

In this episode:

  • Big views and blue skies in the Glencoe region
  • The Devil’s Staircase climb and calf pain realities
  • Hiking solo (but leapfrogging with lots of trail friends)
  • A cozy Airbnb, sour candy resupply, and dinner from Rice & Chips

🎧 Hit play for one of the most beautiful—and mentally recharging—days of the hike.

Ep 070. West Highland Way Day 6 (Trail Series). Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse: Fast Miles, Trail Friend & Hotel Luxury29 Oct 202500:22:10

Day 6 was full of unexpected ease and connection.

I hiked 12 miles from Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse on a surprisingly smooth military road, powered by good trail conversation with a fellow solo hiker named Jane. The moody weather made the Scottish highlands feel extra dramatic, but the miles flew by—until a final soaking just before check-in.

Then it was time to lean into hotel luxury: a hot meal, a robe, a surprise gin and tonic setup, and yes, the awkward joy of eating dinner solo in a fancy restaurant.

In this episode:

  • Easy trail miles and good conversation
  • Misty mountain views and a final mile downpour
  • Checking into a posh hotel with hiker funk
  • Reflections on solo dinners, wet clothes & cultural quirks

🎧 Hit play for a soft landing after a fast solo hiking day on the West Highland Way.

Ep 069. West Highland Way Day 5 (Trail Series). Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy: First Solo Miles, Cozy Pods & Sticky Toffee Pudding22 Oct 202500:16:42

Day 5 marked the start of the solo stretch on the West Highland Way.

Ashima headed back to Glasgow, and I made the short hike from Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy—just seven miles, but a welcome active rest day after four bigger-mileage days in a row.

There was morning rain, a poncho-on-poncho moment, and some quiet, reflective miles through beautiful valleys. I finished the day doing laptop work at the Bridge of Orchy hotel bar, staying in a cozy hiking pod, and taking myself out to dinner—something I’d been a little nervous about pre-trip.

In this episode:

  • Morning rain and a layered poncho strategy
  • First solo miles and a soft hiking day
  • Cozy hiking pods and a working pub stop
  • Facing the solo dinner nerves—and sticky toffee wins

🎧 Hit play for a short-and-sweet reset day before the big solo stretch continues.

Day 4 of the West Highland Way was wet, winding, and emotionally full.

We left our cozy luxury cabin after a no-modifications-allowed Scottish breakfast, tackled 12+ miles of soggy trail (complete with surprise detours), and landed in Tyndrum with muddy feet and grateful hearts.

It was Ashima’s final day on trail, and while the hike itself was a blur of rain and wet shoes, the conversations, laughter, and Real Food Cafe dinner made it one to remember.

In this episode:

  • Rainy miles and the return of the ponchos
  • Silly breakfast stories and trail detours
  • Foot pain, wet feet, and Real Food Cafe luxury
  • Saying goodbye to Ashima and preparing to go solo

🎧 Hit play for one last day of trail banter before the solo stretch begins.

Ep 067. West Highland Way Day 3 (Trail Series). Rowardennan to Beinglass Campsite: Honesty Boxes, Lochside Miles & Boggy Boots22 Oct 202500:19:50

Day 3 was long, beautiful, and a little boggy.

We followed the trail along Loch Lomond—through ferns, mud, technical terrain, and glimpses of gorgeous water. The trail challenged us physically but felt easier mentally than Day 2, even with tired legs and wet boots.

In this episode:

  • The rugged beauty of the Loch Lomond shoreline
  • Snack wins, foot fatigue, and trail mood shifts
  • An honesty box surprise that changed the whole day

EP 066. West Highland Way Day 2 (Trail Series). Drymen to Rowardennan: Conic Hill, Big Winds, & Luxury Hot Chocolate15 Oct 202500:30:01

Day 2 was a big one—big miles over some rugged, windy terrain… and minimal breaks.

We conquered Conic Hill, found heaven in a hot chocolate, and then hit the wall hard. This was the day the trail reminded us we’re carrying everything on our backs, and that Beyoncé is sometimes the only thing keeping morale alive.

In this episode:

  • Conic Hill was Iconic and beautiful and windy, but made us feel ALIVE
  • Mood-boosting hot chocolate at St. Mochas
  • Long miles along the Loch Lomond

🎧 Hit play for a real-deal day on the West Highland Way.
