Denise Joi is one of four pilots for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, where she flies a small Cessna between soaring Rocky Mountain peaks, conducting wildlife surveys and -- more dangerous and dramatic -- fish drops, stocking pristine alpine lakes with trout and grayling. We spoke with her about her incredible job, but also her amazing short film "Fight or Flight" that shows the real reason she pursued flying and how that pursuit helped heal trauma.

From the 1970s on, backpacking reigned supreme. Every outdoor person backpacked, or so it seemed. In a 2012 AJ poll, readers told us they preferred backpacking to car camping 9 to 1. But in the last decade, something changed. Car camping rebranded itself as overlanding and was suddenly cool. Today, backpacking seems to have lost its vibe. But has it? In February 1959 in Russia, nine young ski tourers failed to return from an expedition to the Ural Mountains. Weeks and months later, when searchers finally found their bodies, the evidence—their tent, manner of dress, footprints in the snow, and strange injuries—didn’t come close to offering a logical explanation. Kurt Refsnider had the dream gig -- Geology professor at Prescott College, in Prescott, Arizona, near tons of great riding. But as bikepacking took more and more of his headspace, he realized his real dream gig was founding Bikepacking Roots, an organization dedicated to getting folks from all walks of life out there and having fun. We talked with Refsnider about the rise of bikepacking, how to get into it, and some of the most insane riding he's done.

In 1970, six women climbed Denali — the first all-women's expedition to summit any of the world's high peaks. They hauled wooden snowshoes up a mountain famous for 300-mile-an-hour winds, fought altitude sickness and each other, and pulled off one of the great survival stories in mountaineering history. Almost nobody noticed.

Cassidy Randall's debut book Thirty Below rescues that story from obscurity, weaving together journals, letters, and archives to bring these six complicated, extraordinary women fully to life. The book won the Grand Prize at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival — the Oscars of outdoor literature — and it's not hard to see why.

In this conversation, Cassidy and Stephen talk about what drew her to the story, the savage institutional sexism these women faced before they ever set foot on the mountain, the social dynamics that started unraveling at altitude, and why a story this remarkable stayed buried for over fifty years. They also get into the craft of writing narrative nonfiction, the editor-writer relationship, and what it means to write heroes who are selfish and brilliant and deeply human all at once.
