How Project 2025 will affect LGBTQ+ Americans, an interview with Uncloseted Media's Spencer Macnaughton
19 Aug 2024
01:00:12
Should we stay or should we go now? That’s the question that LGBTQ+ folks and their families have been asking over the last several months of this 2024 election cycle. If Trump wins, are we safe? And just how bad will Project 2025 be for the LGBTQ+ community if he does win?
Make no mistake about it. There is a tangible, intentional ecosystem created to scapegoat and marginalize queer folks in a quest for power from the right, says Spencer Macnaughton, our guest. Spencer is a Gracie Award-winning and Emmy-nominated journalist. He has written and produced for 60 Minutes+, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Vice, Vox, Time, NBC News, The Guardian, and Rolling Stone. He is also an Adjunct Professor at New York University where he teaches a course about LGBTQ journalism. Macnaughton is now the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Uncloseted Media, an investigative LGBTQ news publication that will launch September 3rd.
Project 2025: The episode highlights the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, a document with anti-LGBTQ policies that could affect the community under a Trump administration.
Anti-LGBTQ Legislation: There is concern over new anti-LGBTQ laws in states like Texas and Florida, which may serve as models for federal policies.
Activism and Relocation: Jess and Spencer stress the importance of voting and activism, along with discussing the choice between staying to fight for LGBTQ rights or relocating to more progressive countries.
Uncloseted Media Launch: Spencer announces the September 3 launch of Uncloseted Media, an LGBTQ news publication aimed at providing rigorous journalism on LGBTQ issues.
The Adventure Calls podcast is a bi-weekly podcast that seeks to empower queer folks to move, live and thrive abroad with interviews with relocation experts, queer expats and other organizations that give a lens on the LGBTQ+ experience in the world.

An American Expat's Kiwi Adventure: Story Time of Relocating and Thriving in New Zealand
19 Mar 2024
00:20:39
In this episode of Adventure Calls, you'll hear American expat Elissa Johnsen in her own words, as she narrates through her incredible journey of relocating with her family to New Zealand during COVID, offering an inspiring firsthand account of embracing change and creating a new life abroad.
Elissa is a Maryland native turned New Zealander who embarked on a life-altering journey two years ago with her close-knit family. She and her husband, together with their three young children, who at the time were roughly six, a toddler and a one-month old —left the familiarity of their United States home for a bit of an adventure in the lush landscapes of New Zealand.
Initially only for a year or two, the family set their roots roots a bit south of Auckland in the picturesque city of Tauranga, and Elissa and her family embraced the diverse culture and stunning environment of their adopted country. After spending two years assimilating and growing as a unit amidst Tauranga's coastal charm, Elissa and her family decided they had no intention of returning to the United States, and made the vibrant capital city of Wellington their home.
Elissa's journey represents a unique blend of adventure and family, showcasing her courage and commitment to providing a rich life full of experiences for her children. Now settled in Wellington, she continues to navigate the rewards and challenges of life abroad with grace and determination.
Below are the key takeaways from this episode:
Elissa Johnsen, an American expat living in New Zealand, shared her journey of relocating with her family and working as a nurse in New Zealand during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to move to New Zealand was driven by the desire for a better, less stressful environment for their family, particularly for their children, and the opportunities for their careers.
Elissa highlighted the significant differences in the healthcare system and societal environment between the United States and New Zealand, emphasizing the reduced stress and anxiety she experienced living in New Zealand.
The importance of downsizing and preparation for moving abroad was underscored as Elissa shared her experience of moving with children and the support she found in the expat community.
Elissa's TikTok account, KiwiFroyo, not only documents her family's life in New Zealand but also serves as a platform to share insights and advice with those interested in a similar move.

About Sylvie Froger Originally from France, Sylvie launched Simply London after a personal relocation from Switzerland to London went awry, even though she considered herself an expert expat. Until that move, she had an international career in Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark. She was responsible for arranging the whole move on her own: she spent a day of apartment hunting driving on the wrong side of the road, and after relocating, she had problems figuring out her cell phone, Wi-Fi provider, and had to hang up on a utility company because she couldn’t understand a bill collector’s thick Scottish accent. Even the most experienced expats need a helping hand, which is why Sylvie founded Simply London to work with expats relocating to the capital and surrounding home counties.
Simply London works with expats coming on their own, with a family or with their company. The team she has built focuses on areas of expertise including home search services, school search services, settling-in services, move coordination services, visa application services, tax advice, intercultural coaching, language services, and more.

Finding home with Jasmine Okocha, Founder of The Jazzy Nation
16 Jun 2021
00:48:26
What does home mean when you live in a new place? Can you ever go home again, truly home once you leave?
On today's episode, I talk to The Jazzy Nation founder Jasmine Okocha, a traveler and expat who has lived in Morocco and India, and is currently based in Washington DC with her husband Gozie, a United States Diplomat, while they await the news of his next assignment abroad.
You’ll hear her story of moving abroad without having ever even traveled abroad before, and what it’s like to move back home after every assignment that her Diplomat husband completes.
This is a beautiful conversation about home and whether you can ever go back again. It's about how hard it can be to adjust, homesickness, reverse culture shock, and how, if given a choice, we'd do it all again, no matter what. As serial expats, we learn to find home within ourselves.

How to achieve true success abroad, with Cultural Mixology founder Jamie Gelbtuch
27 Apr 2021
00:40:01
This week’s episode is a bit different.
It's about YOU. Your culture. Although it is not your intention, when you move abroad, you are exporting your culture to another country, too.
After all, you don't just show up and learn about new ways of living. You learn them through the lens of your home culture. And there can be clashes there. Misunderstandings. And understanding how your culture is similar or different to where you move to can be the ultimate key to success abroad.
Jamie Gelbtuch is the founder of Cultural Mixology, which centers around cross-cultural training, executive & career coaching for expats and global teams around the world. She works with individual expat clients as well as massive brands like IBM, UBS, U.S. Department of State, the city of New York, and Julliard, among others.
Jamie has spent a total of three years living in France, and speaks French and Spanish fluently. She is a graduate of Thunderbird School of Global Management (MBA), Georgetown University (BS), and has a certificate in Executive and Organizational Coaching from NYC. And in her spare time, she volunteers as a Chairperson for Georgetown University’s Alumni Admissions Program in NYC, is an active runner, a globetrotter who has traveled to five continents.

In this episode, Jamie recommends the book The Culture Map by Erin Meyer.

Adventure Recall | Popcorngate (My Most Embarrassing Moment Abroad)
09 Mar 2021
00:20:21
This is the one about the time when I tried to make a joke, offended a sweet grandmother in her own kitchen, and everyone ended up laughing at me, not with me.
And I survived! What's the worst that can happen while you're learning a language in a new country? I feel like my story is a good example of how embarrassing it can get, and yet I wouldn't change it for the world.
Can you move abroad without speaking the language? Yes! Can you learn it when you get there? Yes! Will you make a lot of mistakes? Oh yeah.... and it will be embarrassing. But it's really the only way you can learn.

You name it, and I've probably got a story. And yet, I still insist that the benefits of following your call to adventure outweigh the risks, no matter what. Patrick Smith: From Teacher to famous TikTok-er in Tokyo

Patrick Smith is an American, based in Tokyo, Japan who has been living a double life. That's right! By day, Patrick has been a humble, genuinely enthusiastic English teacher for over nine years now. By night, he has recently amassed nearly one million followers on TikTok, where he posts lighthearted skits about life in the classroom, and life in Japan.
His online presence is exploding, and rightfully so. His posts are hilarious and totally relatable for anyone who's ever taught English anywhere in the world.
This is a story of how a kid from the Midwest not particularly great at or interested in school, grabbed hold of an opportunity to move to China after college, and now works as a passionate teacher in Tokyo and an ambassador for expats everywhere.

Jazzie Más: An American Stand-Up Comedian in Vietnam
02 Feb 2021
00:36:36
Based in Da Nang, Vietnam, Jazzie Mas is a stand-up comic from South Central, Los Angeles who is destined for global stardom, though her path toward it has been anything but direct.
In my conversation with Jazzie, you'll hear about her time as a digital nomad. 11 Jun 2024
00:58:15
Happy Pride, y'all! It's important to remember that Pride is a protest, first and foremost. In this powerful episode, Latoya Nugent shares her emotional journey from renown LGBTQ+ advocacy in Jamaica to finding safety in Canada through Rainbow Railroad. (Latoya's interview starts at 9:59).
Latoya Nugent is the Head of Engagement at Rainbow Railroad. Originally from Jamaica and currently residing in Toronto, Canada, Latoya was relocated from her home country due to the threatening environment created by her queer, feminist activism. In Jamaica, the legislative framework and societal attitudes lead to widespread violence, persecution, and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. Now, in Toronto, Latoya continues her work advocating for and supporting LGBTQ+ rights on a global scale with Rainbow Railroad.
Rainbow Railroad's Impact: The episode highlights Rainbow Railroad’s vital role in helping LGBTQ+ individuals from countries that criminalize being LGBTQ+, and their ongoing efforts to support those in need of international relocation and domestic resettlement.
Navigating Legislation and Relocation: Latoya Nugent discusses the varying degrees of acceptance and legal support for LGBTQA+ people across the US and how anti-trans laws are prompting relocations within the country and to places like Canada.
Latoya's Advocacy in Jamaica: Latoya shares her work in Jamaica, organizing pride events and advocating for LGBTQ+ visibility, despite facing significant legal and social challenges.
Community and Financial Support: Emphasis is placed on the necessity for both financial contributions and volunteer efforts to support the resettlement and integration of LGBTQ+ refugees, including Rainbow Railroad's current fundraising goals.

I first met Derek in Mexico in 2011, when he had already been traveling and working on cruise ships around the world for over a decade. In this interview, Derek was in Bali with his girlfriend and his rescue kitten, but has since moved on to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico to spend the next phase of the pandemic.

Taking risks with delusional confidence during the Pandemic with Gabby Beckford | Call from Virginia
01 Sep 2020
00:44:31
Gabby Beckford is the 24-year-old entrepreneur, content creator, and travel-addict behind Packs Light. Between her TEDx talk on Delusional Confidence and risk-taking, while young, her 800+, and growing Facebook group called Young Travelers Network, and her being awarded more than $75,000 in study abroad funds in college, Gabby is known as the Opportunity Expert. Her mission is to empower young people to seek risk, seize opportunities, and see the world. She's been featured in the New York Times, Good Morning America Online, YahooNews!, Lonely Planet, and more.
I love this conversation with Gabby, and I think you will be so inspired as well. From how Covid-19 will affect the future of travel, to how a mastermind of black travel content creators formed the Black Travel Alliance seemingly overnight in response not only to the murder of George Floyd but to hold the travel companies accountable who joined in the digital outcry but need to show up with diversity on their teams and in their marketing. But the most exciting to me is her attitude toward two things: delusional confidence, the idea that if you are going to do something, you might as well assume that it is going to go well or why else do it, and the idea that rather than taking anyone else’s word for it - you should go find out for herself. Gabby is wise beyond her years and an inspiration to all ages. Let’s get into it, on episode 10 of Adventure Calls.
In this podcast, we talk about Gabby's life-changing time spent living abroad in Dubai. If you want to know more about moving abroad, I want to help!
The post-pandemic future of black travel with Martinique Lewis of the Black Travel Alliance | Call from Oakland, CA
23 Jul 2020
00:47:34
Martinique Lewis is a Diversity in Travel Consultant who works tirelessly to ensure that diversity is not just a buzzword in the travel industry. She blogs at MartySanDiego.com, where she is the creator of the Diversity in Travel Report Card holding the industry to a higher and more transparent standard. Marty has been working with tourist boards and travel brands for years, first for free and today as one of the co-founders of the recently-formed Black Travel Alliance. The mission of the Black Travel Alliance is to support Black content creators around the world and increase their representation in the travel industry, including but not limited to employment, conferences, and media.
In this interview, Marty discusses her own path in the travel industry, who in the industry currently scores highly on her diversity in travel report cards, and the future of black travel post-pandemic and hopefully post-paradigm shift as a result of the Black Lives Matter movement. She also gives us a list of over 20 Black content creators to follow off the top of her head - she is an amazing resource and connector. We also discuss Black-led tours available around the world, and Marty encourages listeners, when you next take a trip to a new city or a new country, to consider making at least one of the tours you book one that looks at the history or heritage of that place through the lens of the Black community, or African Diaspora, of that spot.
There has never been more energy piping through this podcast, so sit back, strap in and prepare to be mesmerized by the inspiring and driven Marty Lewis.

The future of travel startups with Jannik Lawaetz, founder of Luggagehero | Call from Denmark
21 Jun 2020
00:32:13
Jannik Lawaetz is the founder and CEO of LuggageHero, a growing network of affordable luggage-storage sites. As you might imagine, both sides of his win-win travel startup have been vastly reduced during the pandemic, as travel has all but stopped, and the local shops, cafes and hotels stores that normally store the luggage were almost all shut.
Pre-pandemic, Luggage Hero launched in Copenhagen and expanded to London and New York City rapidly, and is now in 38 cities with 1500+ storage locations. It is the only international storage company to offer storage by the hour from a self-service travel app.
Since LuggageHero launched, its customers have racked up over 2 million hours of bag storage and the company, which has raised more than $2.25 million in funding to help expand its operations, was named one of PhocusWire’s Hot 25 Startups for 2019.
A graduate of Copenhagen Business School and a nominated entrepreneur of the year 2018 and 2019 by Ernst&Young, Jannik previously helped launch several Danish tech startups, including one that he launched and sold by the age of 14.
In this episode, we talk about the future of travel startups, the future of travel, and what travelers and shop owners in his 250,000 strong community are thinking about the near and medium-term of travel.
