This story from the UK top 40 singles chart we’re looking at this week all seem united by one thing...how it sucks to be a famous pop star.

When you’re not suing your record company (Badly Drawn Boy), you’re having people hack your phones (The Ordinary Boys), or you’re going into cocaine psychosis (Rick James) or you’re having to fire band members to STOP yourself going into cocaine psychosis (Placebo).

Not great for these artists, but gives us lots of great 2000s pop music history (and great 2000s pop music in general) to talk about!Featuring the following tracks:Badly Drawn Boy - Nothing’s Gonna Change Your Mind

Beatfreakz - Superfreak

Bedouin Soundclash - When the Night Feels My Song

Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z - Deja Vu

My Chemical Romance, David Hasselhoff and (unfortunately) P. Diddy (8 - 14 October 2006)14 oct. 202600:58:54

It’s always fun when the British record buying public get behind a totally rubbish song, and 2006 gave us a classic example as the UK tried to get David Hasselhoff’s ‘Jump in My Car’ to the top spot.

It has some fierce competition from some actual pop songs, legendary emo tracks and whatever P. Diddy’s ‘Come to Me’ is supposed to be.

Will ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ be parading its way to the top of the charts, or will Razorlight finally get the chart-topper landfill indie lover were hoping for? Let’s find out as we dive into another classic week of 2000s pop music history from the UK top 40 singles chart.

This week, we’re also talking about Fergie’s ridiculous solo debut (and inability to tell London’s bridges apart), Kelis starting a feud with 50 Cent and the weirdest piece of promo I’ve ever seen a flop pop star do in all my time researching the 00s.

Few pieces of pop music have dented a career quite like Robbie Williams’ Rudebox, so I’m so glad to finally be able to talk about this weird electro-rap song about how TK Maxx costs less and how you don’t sweat much for a fat lass. Sugababes and The Streets Flop While World Cup Songs Fight for the Top (11 - 17 Jun 2006)17 juin 202601:13:50

This week on the 2000s pop music history podcast counting down the 40 biggest selling songs from this week 20 years ago… “it’s coming home...” by which I mean Three Lions is back on the chart for the (approximately) 28 millionth time. It is just one of the football tracks trying to knock Sandi Thom off the top spot, with Crazy Frog and a nasty piece of xenophobia backed by The Sun battling Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds.

For those of you who actually prefer real 2000s pop music, we get Sugababes and The Streets both overwhelming with ballads, Morrissey going mental on his record company, and Duncan from Blue trying and failing to have a solo career.

Rihanna's SOS and 39 other less good songs from 2006 (16-22 April 2006)22 avr. 202601:13:51

“SOS please someone help me. It’s not healthy for me to feel this way” about a pop song. But that’s just how I feel about Rihanna’s SOS, one of the true starmaking tracks of the decade. Which of course means it’s probably going to be beat by a drippy ballad from Shayne Ward off of that X Factor. So the 2000s charts go.

Do Rihanna and Shayne Ward have what it takes to knock Gnarls Barkley off the top, or will it be the job of Gorillaz, Infernal, Fall Out Boy, Hard-Fi or Jamie Foxx. Find out as we deep dive into another week on the 2006 charts.

Which pop stars has MULTIPLE family members in prison for murder? Which Danish band is basically forced into doing an England World Cup song? And which singer had to present a TV show with Holly Willoughby where every presenter had to be barefoot. Find out as we tell another set of tales from 2000s music, in the only music history podcast that every episode counts down the top 40 singles chart from this week 20 years ago.

U2, Mary J Blige and some candy-based sexual innuendo (9 - 15 April 2006)15 avr. 202601:06:56

This week on our look at the music that came out this week in 2006, we’re going literally from the sublime to ridiculous, in a chart that takes us from one of the most emotional songs ever written in U2’s One’s to one of the stupidest tracks ever, D4L’s Laffy Taffy.

In between, we get Franz Ferdinand singing about Jesus, Morrissey discussing losing his virginity, Michael Jackson terrified by the idea of a woman’s sexuality and The Zutons’ ode to keeping women locked in your basement (do not try this at home, kids). In short, another typically weird look into the pop music of the 2000s.

This week 20 years ago on the pop music charts...the British record buying public goes Craaaaaaaayyyyyyyzzzaaaaaaayyyyyyyy for Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo’s Gnarls Barkley project while gossip-lovers everywhere wonder about what Mike Skinner and Cheryl Cole might have got involved in.

The music industry lets Girls Aloud (and Kelly Clarkson) down again (19-25 March 2006)25 mars 202601:12:37

This week on the podcast telling the stories of the biggest songs from this week 20 year ago…This is a baffling week on the 2000s charts for me. Why is Kelly Clarkson being beaten by a less good version of herself literally using the same songwriter? How could the pop music industry fumble the singles from Girls Aloud’s best album so badly? Why don’t the British record buying public appreciate Beverley Knight and Massive Attack more? And maybe most importantly of all...why do those three wise men get a semi by the sea?

All of these questions about 2006 pop will (hopefully) be answered in our latest episode alongside the following tracks:

The 40 Best Songs of 200514 janv. 202602:08:55

(Head over to our Patreon now to hear our episodes counting down my full 100 favourite songs of 2005)One year, 52 weeks and 500 songs that made it onto the UK top 40. We have crunched the numbers, made some tough decisions and listened to Verbalicious’ Don’t Play Nice on repeat A LOT to whittle it down to the best 40 songs that made it onto the chart 20 years ago.

Expect some songs you’ll love, some songs you probably love to hate and the ultimate celebration for the weird year of pop music that was 2005.

Including songs from Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Arctic Monkeys, Björk, Franz Ferdinand, Sugababes, The White Stripes, Gorillaz and many many more.

The 2005 Christmas Number 1 Race (Part 1) (24 Dec 2005)24 déc. 202501:23:32

In this episode of The 2000s Chart Show, we dive into the weeks that are always crucial in UK pop history: the race for the 2005 Christmas Number One. It’s a year that has it all: Novelty hits, emotional ballads and even alternative rock, and in this episode we revisit a uniquely chaotic moment in 2000s chart culture and music history.

We break down the key releases competing for the top spot: Crazy Frog’s festive chart assault (and assault on our ears), Nizlopi’s breakout viral hit JCB Song, and major pop entries from Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams, McFly, and the unholy team-up of Westlife and Diana Ross.

Less likely contenders include bands like The Subways and Depeche Mode alongside truly left-field contenders such as The Water Babies from a Vodafone ad and the entire England Cricket Team’s singing Jerusalem.

Packed with nostalgia, chart trivia, and cultural context, this episode is essential listening for fans of 2000s pop, UK chart music, Christmas Number One history, and the golden era of CD singles, Top of the Pops, and mid-2000s British music.

Perfect for listeners who love revisiting the songs, artists, and moments that defined the UK music charts in the 2000s.

Gorillaz, four 50 Cent Beefs and the end of another flop boyband (3 Dec 2005)03 déc. 202501:14:01

On the 2000s charts this week, Christmas is coming, and the charts are getting in the mood with such festive topics as... America’s obsession with guns! Being in love with a straight man (relatable TBH)! Doing things with a radio that would get my episode shadowbanned if I put it in this description!

Winter for many represents the end of things, and so it’s fitting that we also have the end of another attempted boyband, with Freefaller going out with one of the most abysmal covers of the entire 2000s. It is a truth of 2000s pop universally acknowledged that you can’t mistake my biology...but did the British public in the 00s have enough musical taste to put the best Girls Aloud song (and maybe best song of all time?) to number one?Or did they prefer Fergie and her humps, bumps and lovely lady lumps? Also on this week’s show...Blazin’ Squad drop nine members and becoming the East 17 nacho-reheaters Friday Hill (and Jodie Marsh reveals too much about her and Kenzie’s love life).
