Robbie Williams, Rachel Stevens, Brandy and Khia (16 Oct 2004)15 Oct 202401:11:00

This week 20 years ago, a new chart record was broken as SEVEN (!) songs are new entries on the top 10, with 17 (!!) new entries in total from the likes of Rachel Stevens, Robbie Williams, Good Charlotte, Brandy, Eamon, DJ Casper and Khia.

This week on the pop music podcast where we celebrate the music of the 2000s one top 40 singles chart at a time:

  • What did Rachel Stevens take from a former adult film actress....and what did Fidel Castro have to do with it?
  • Why Eamon found himself being accused of misogyny whilst on a trip to Alton Towers
  • Exactly how many times was Khia arrested for 'criminal mischief'?
  • How did the Oops Upside Your Head rowing on the floor dance start?
  • How will Enya get mentioned AGAIN in another episode despite not releasing any music in 2004?

All that plus the usual 2000s nostalgia, iconic pop music and crazy trivia you never knew about music's finest decade.

Hello Ashlee Simpson's SNL Fiasco, Goodbye Cheeky Girls and Big Brovaz (9 Oct 2004)08 Oct 202401:12:56

It's time to get cheeky cheeky for the last time as the Cheeky Girls take their last bow on the UK top 40. Elsewhere in the pop music landscape, Jentina and Beverley Knight are flopping hard, Ashlee Simpson is getting humiliated on live TV and The Streets and Super Furry Animals are trying to see what they can get away with when it comes to drugs and swearing on the charts.

The most heterosexual chart yet (1 Oct 2004)01 Oct 202401:07:01

To all those people who say "OK, but why isn't there a straight pride"...here it is. This episode is for you. For some reason, on this week 20 years ago the music industry conspired to get every middle-aged man on their rosters to release music all in the same week, with only Alacazar left to offer any sort of gay counterpoint.

But it's still a great episode of the podcast reliving the pop music of the 2000s one UK top 40 singles chart at a time, with answers to the following questions:

  • Which Britpop star went to prison for threatening to chop an air hostess' hands off?
  • Which eccentric 60s legend once bought 8 tonnes of sand?
  • Which dance icon lived next door to Paul McCartney (who forced him to leave the country)?
  • Which indie band started a fight with the entire town of Worthing?
  • How many fun facts about Muse is too many?

All that plus a lorra lorra laughs and tunes from Alcazar, Biffy Clyro, Brian Wilson, Donny Osmond, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Ian Brown, Mark Knopfler, Muse, The Ordinary Boys and Paul McCartney

Girls Aloud, Green Day and Thrusting Aerobics Instructors (24 Sep 2004)24 Sep 202401:11:33

Let's go, eskimo...Girls Aloud are back with Love Machine, a song that the band hated. And they're not the only ones who despise their own songs this week, as Joss Stone and Eric Prydz have also had very few words to say about their tracks either...

Also on this week's edition of the 2000s pop music podcast that's reliving the top 40 singles chart from this week years ago:

Did Girls Aloud Curse Javine? (And Did Baby Cakes Beat The Libertines?) (August 21 2004)20 Aug 202401:26:40

We're back with one of my personal favourite chart battles of the 2000s. A very chaotic Libertines who have basically broken up on the cusp of being the biggest band in the UK vs. the madly catchy Baby Cakes by 3 of a Kind. All will be revealed as we relive the UK top 40 singles chart from this week 20 years ago.

Also on this week's episode: Pop trivia! Deranged takes! Nostalgia! Bad accents! Plus:

*Which rapper lost the demo of his second album in a threesome?

*Which 2000s pop star was the face of the water brand that had a very unfortunate tagline involving spunk?

*Which indie girlie of 2004's mum was in the Carry On films?

*Which X Factor winner did Busted call "rude"?

All that plus songs from some of the 2000s' biggest pop stars, including Busted, Britney, Anastasia, Rachel Stevens, Jamelia, Usher and McFly.

The UK top 40 this time 20 years ago starring Sam & Mark, Fatman Scoop and Ronan 'Roaming' Keating (21 February 2004)20 Feb 202401:19:00

WE'RE BACK! DID YOU MISS US?

On holiday last week, I decided I couldn't bear to take time away from relaxing to talk about a crappy selection of pop songs...and this week's not much better. Luckily, Ronan Keating decided to make the week worth it by doing one of the most absurd pieces of promotional tie-in I have ever seen. (Maybe he should have taken his own advice when he said that you say it best when they say nothing at all...)

Elsewhere of the podcast where every week we're celebrating the music of the 00s one top 40 at a time: Why are rappers so obsessed with the Holiday Inn? Which trance DJ has a Dutch equivalent of an OBE? Which band's bassist's house once got burned down by a drug dealer? Answers to all those questions plus the best and worst of pop music this time two decades ago.

This week 20 years ago, Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's breast live on the Super Bowl. We all know it had a huge effect on Janet's career, but did you know it also effected Britney Spears, Maroon 5, Incubus and Blink-182?

On this week's episode of the pop music podcast where every week we celebrate the music of the 2000s one singles chart at a time, we explore one of the most infamous performances of 2004 and ask some more questions you've literally never asked. Is God is a DJ and life is a dancefloor, what is a toilet? Which of the golden rules of pop music did Joss Stone break, and which of Henry VIII's wives did she play? Which cursed duet did Jamelia and Johnny Borrell from Razorlight perform?

All these questions are answered on this week's show plus music from Pink, Emma Bunton, Snow Patrol, LMC Vs U2 and more.
