S3E21 Nap Transitions: When They Happen & How to Navigate Them02 Apr 202600:18:16

Nap transitions are one of the most common questions parents ask about sleep.

One day naps seem to be working… and the next it suddenly feels like everything has fallen apart.

In this episode, I’m breaking down nap transitions from the newborn stage all the way through the toddler years so you can better understand what’s actually happening with your child’s sleep.

I talk about:

• How many naps newborns typically take (and why their sleep feels so unpredictable)

• When the 3 to 2 nap transition usually happens and signs it might be starting

• Why babies sometimes refuse their third nap but then treat bedtime like a nap

• What bridge naps are and when they can help during transitions

• When the 2 to 1 nap transition typically happens

• Different ways to approach moving to one nap depending on your child’s sleep needs and wake window threshold

• And when children usually drop naps completely

If you’re currently navigating nap transitions with your baby or toddler, this episode will help you understand what’s normal and how to approach these changes with a little more confidence (and a lot less stress).

S3E20 Night Terrors, Sleepwalking & Confusion Arousals: Understanding Parasomnias in Kids12 Mar 202600:26:24

Middle-of-the-night moments with our kids can sometimes feel incredibly scary.

Your child suddenly sits up screaming. They look awake but don’t recognize you. Or they start walking around the house while seemingly still asleep.

And if you’ve never seen it before, it can leave you wondering what on earth is going on.

In this episode, we’re talking all about parasomnias — a group of sleep behaviors that include things like confusion arousals, sleepwalking, night terrors, and nightmares.

Parasomnias are actually much more common in childhood than most parents realize, and many of the behaviors that feel alarming in the moment are a normal part of how a child’s brain develops during sleep.

In this conversation we cover:

• What parasomnias actually are

• Why they tend to happen during deep sleep

• The difference between night terrors and nightmares

• What confusion arousals look like in babies and toddlers

• Why things like illness, overtiredness, emotional stress, or schedule disruptions can trigger episodes

• What parents can do in the moment when they happen

• And why trying to wake your child often isn’t necessary

Aleni also shares her personal experience navigating night terrors with her daughter Nora, including some of the triggers they’ve noticed over time.

Understanding what’s happening during these episodes can make those middle-of-the-night moments feel a lot less frightening — and a lot more manageable.

If you’ve ever experienced night terrors, sleepwalking, or strange nighttime behaviors with your child, this episode will help bring some clarity and reassurance.

S3E19 Talking to Kids About Bodies, Boundaries & Consent With Sex Educator Kimberly Wolf 05 Mar 202600:40:08

Talking to kids about bodies, boundaries, and consent can feel… intimidating.

A lot of us didn’t grow up with these conversations and most parents are quietly wondering:

“Am I starting too early?”

“How much detail is too much?”

“What if I say the wrong thing?”

This week on the podcast, we sit down with sex education expert Kimberly Wolf for a deeply practical and reassuring conversation about how to talk to kids about bodies, privacy, boundaries, and consent — from toddlerhood through puberty.

We cover:

💛 What sex education actually looks like for toddlers and preschoolers

💛 Age-appropriate language for 2–4 year olds and 5–7 year olds

💛 How to introduce consent in everyday parenting moments

💛 How to respond when your child asks a question you weren’t expecting

We also talk about parental discomfort — because so many of us are trying to parent differently than we were parented. Kimberly shares why silence is often more harmful than saying the “wrong” thing, and why starting early doesn’t take away innocence — it protects it.

She also introduces her guide, Tiny Talks to Big Conversations, which helps parents move from small, everyday language shifts to confident, ongoing conversations as their children grow.

If you’ve ever felt unsure about when to start, what to say, or whether you’ve “missed the window” — this episode will feel grounding.

Because these conversations aren’t one big talk.

They’re tiny, connected moments that build safety and trust over time 💛

S3E17 Why Prenatal Breastfeeding Support Matter With Lactation Counsellor Taylor Bonacolta19 Feb 202600:41:08

Breastfeeding advice is everywhere — and yet so many parents still find themselves completely blindsided once baby arrives.

In this episode, we sit down with Taylor of June And Lily, a lactation educator and pediatric nurse, for an honest, reality-based conversation about breastfeeding, newborn sleep, and the early postpartum days.

We talk about why prenatal breastfeeding education matters far more than most parents realize, the unrealistic expectations many families carry into postpartum, and how those expectations can quietly shape confidence, stress, and mental health.

Taylor walks us through what “normal” can actually look like in the first week home with a newborn — from feeding patterns to sleep to the behaviors that often leave parents wondering if something is wrong.

We also dive into the intersection of breastfeeding and sleep, why understanding infant sleep biology is essential for new parents, and the importance of harm-reduction conversations around bed sharing — including why education like the Safe Sleep 7 matters even for families who never planned to share sleep.

This is a grounding, reassuring episode for pregnant parents, newly postpartum families, and anyone who has ever felt like their newborn experience didn’t match what they were told to expect.

If you’re navigating feeding, sleep, or the overwhelming noise of early parenthood — this conversation will help you exhale a little 💛

S3E16 Sleep Support for Highly Sensitive & Neurodivergent Children with Lauren Sloan 12 Feb 202601:03:07

Sleep advice often assumes that all babies are the same — and for many families, that assumption is where everything starts to fall apart.

In this episode, we sit down with Lauren Sloan, a baby-led sleep and wellbeing specialist who specializes in supporting highly sensitive, neurodivergent, and medically complex babies and children.

Together, we unpack the huge gap families fall into when their baby’s sleep challenges are dismissed as “normal,” labeled as behavioral, or brushed off with a “wait and see” approach — even when something doesn’t feel right.

Lauren shares why traditional sleep advice so often fails sensitive and neurodivergent children, how regulation challenges actually show up at night, and why expecting these kids to “self-soothe” is not only unrealistic, but often harmful. We talk about nervous-system-informed care, overlapping feeding and airway concerns, hypotonia, sensory differences, and what gets missed when sleep is treated as a standalone issue instead of part of a whole system.

This conversation also dives deep into parental intuition and advocacy — how to trust yourself when professionals minimize your concerns, how to advocate without burning out, and why parents don’t need to become medical experts to know when something is off.

We also explore what biologically respectful sleep support really looks like, how responsive care supports long-term regulation and emotional health, and how to redefine “progress” when sleep doesn’t look typical.

If you’re parenting a baby or child who feels more intense, more reactive, harder to settle, or harder to fit into mainstream advice — this episode is for you.

This is a grounding, validating conversation for parents who have felt unseen, dismissed, or blamed — and who are looking for support that actually honors their child’s biology. 💛

S3E15 Beyond “Good Parenting”: Sleep, Culture & Shared Values with Childhood Development Specialist, Melina. 29 Jan 202600:52:21

Parenting already comes with a lot of noise — and when you’re raising children in a multicultural home, that noise can feel even louder.

In this episode, we sit down with Melina, a childhood development specialist and founder of Pueblo, to talk about what it really looks like to parent across differences — cultural and personal — without losing yourselves or your relationship along the way.

Melina shares how her own experience shaped her work and why so much mainstream parenting advice asks parents to leave parts of themselves at the door. We talk about the quiet stand-offs many couples experience behind closed doors, especially around emotionally loaded topics like sleep, routines, and “what good parenting should look like.”

This is a grounding, validating conversation for parents who feel caught between instincts, advice, culture, and partnership — and who want to enjoy parenting together again instead of constantly managing it.

If you’ve ever felt like you and your partner were parenting from different playbooks, especially around sleep, this episode is for you. 💛

S3E14 When Bed Sharing Stops Working: A Gentle Way to Transition22 Jan 202600:39:42

Bed sharing works for a lot of families… until it doesn’t.

In this episode, we’re talking about how to transition away from bed sharing gently and responsively, without rushing your child or forcing independence before they’re ready.

We dive into why separation can feel so big for babies and toddlers, how attachment actually develops in the first year of life, and why there is no such thing as a baby or toddler who is “too attached.” We also talk about what changes after 12 months and why that stage often opens up more options for easing into separation.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Set up a sleep space your child actually feels safe in

  • Bridge separation using attachment-based strategies

  • Decide what your initial transition goal should be (without doing everything at once)

  • Navigate this change in a way that honors both your child’s needs and your own

We also get a cameo appearance from Aleni’s partner Dave to give us a Dad perspective.

This conversation isn’t about perfect plans or rigid consistency. It’s about trust, responsiveness, and making changes in a way that feels supportive for your family.

If bed sharing has stopped working but sleep training doesn’t feel right, this episode is for you. 💛

S3E13 What Normal Toddler Sleep Really Looks Like 15 Jan 202600:38:28

Toddler sleep can feel confusing, emotional, and wildly inconsistent — especially when it seems like everyone else’s toddler is “sleeping through the night.”

In this episode, we’re breaking down what normal toddler sleep actually looks like, from night wakings and nap resistance to bedtime struggles and early mornings. We talk about how developmental progressions, temperament, separation awareness, and changing sleep needs all play a role in toddler sleep — and why sleep at this age is rarely linear.

This conversation is meant to take pressure off, normalize what you’re seeing, and help you understand your toddler’s sleep without rigid rules or one-size-fits-all advice. If toddler sleep has been feeling harder than you expected, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we walk through what’s biologically normal for infant sleep during the first year of life. From frequent night wakings and short naps to sleep disruptions during developmental progressions, we explain why so many common struggles are actually expected.

S3E11 Carried With Care: Babywearing, Safety & Supporting Sleep With Anna 18 Dec 202500:53:20

In this episode, we’re joined by Anna, a baby wearing educator, for a conversation about baby wearing as more than just a tool — but a biologically normal, relationship-based way of caring for babies and toddlers. We talk about how baby wearing supports regulation, attachment, emotional connection, and sleep, and why humans have always relied on carrying our babies long before cribs and sleep “solutions” existed.

Anna breaks down what baby wearing actually is, why it’s not about creating dependence or “bad habits,” and how proximity and responsiveness help babies feel safe enough to regulate — both during the day and at night. We unpack common misconceptions, discuss safety and fit (especially for newborns and preemies), and explore how baby wearing can be a powerful support during big emotions, middle-of-the-night wake-ups, and those seasons where nothing else seems to work.

We also dive into the practical side — choosing the right carrier, troubleshooting when baby wearing feels hard, and why it doesn’t have to be perfect to be safe and functional. Whether you’re brand new to baby wearing or looking to reconnect with it in a way that feels sustainable, this episode will leave you feeling more confident, more supported, and more aligned with your instincts.

S3E10 Pelvic Floor 101: What Every Mom Should Know (But Was Never Taught)11 Dec 202500:41:23

In this week’s episode, we’re joined by pelvic floor specialist Dr. Ashley Schaab for a conversation every mom deserves to hear. Pelvic floor health is one of those things we all know matters… but no one actually talks about until we’re already struggling with discomfort, leaking, pain, or feeling like our bodies just aren’t the same postpartum.

Ashley walks us through what actually happens to the pelvic floor during pregnancy and birth, how common symptoms are (and which ones aren’t normal), and why healing requires so much more than “just do your kegels.”

She shares practical, gentle steps moms can take to support healing, how to advocate for real care, and why reconnecting with your body is such an important part of postpartum mental health.

Whether you’re newly postpartum or years into motherhood, this episode will leave you feeling informed, validated, and empowered — because your body deserves support, not silence.

S3E9 Santa, Sleep & Surviving the Holidays04 Dec 202500:47:06

In this week’s episode, we’re diving into all things Santa, Christmas, and sleep — because the holidays bring magic… and also overstimulation, late nights, sugar, travel, chaos, and so many opinions from relatives who haven’t had a baby in 30 years.

We share how each of us navigates Santa in our homes, what we do (and don’t) feel comfortable with, and why we aren’t forcing Santa photos if our kids are terrified. We talk gift budgets, overstimulation, boundaries, and how to protect your child’s emotional well-being when everything around them is loud, bright, and busy.

And of course — we get into sleep during the holidays. How we personally handle bedtimes, what we let slide, what we protect, and how we respond to the classic unsolicited advice.

This is your reminder that you can keep the magic and keep the connection. You can enjoy the season without sacrificing your child’s sense of safety or your own sanity.

Grab a cozy drink, curl up, and join us for a very real, very relatable holiday chat.

S3E8 Going From 1 to 2: Sleep With Blake Alexiss27 Nov 202500:41:11

This week on That’s Not How a Baby Sleeps, we’re welcoming back one of our past guests — Blake Alexiss — for an honest and heartfelt conversation about the transition from one child to two, and what sleep looked like the second time around.

Blake opens up about the rollercoaster of adding a new baby into the mix, how her second postpartum experience compared to her first, and the sleep myths she released once she realized how much more confident and grounded she felt the second time.

We talk about:

✨ The pressure she felt as a first-time mom — and how she let that go with baby #2

✨ How vastly different temperaments changed her approach to sleep

✨ What she did differently this time, and what she kept the same

✨ Navigating bedtime with two little ones (and the moments where everyone needs you at once)

✨ Why understanding her baby’s unique sleep needs made everything feel calmer and more manageable

If you’re expecting baby number two, deep in the transition, or simply want reassurance that sleep doesn’t have to look “perfect” to be supportive — this episode will feel like a warm exhale. Blake’s honesty, intuition, and growth shine through, and her story is such a beautiful reminder that trusting yourself makes all the difference. 💛

S3E7 Drowsy But Awake: Debunking the Internet’s Favorite Sleep Myth20 Nov 202500:31:53

In this episode, we’re diving into one of the most popular — and most frustrating — pieces of baby sleep advice out there: “drowsy but awake.”

If you’ve ever tried putting your baby down this way and watched them instantly go from peaceful to panicked… this episode is for you.

We break down what this advice was supposed to do, why it only works for a small percentage of easygoing babies, and how it can leave so many parents feeling like they’re somehow failing when it doesn’t magically fix sleep.

We’ll talk about:

✨ Why most babies are not wired to fall asleep independently

✨ How temperament, sensory needs, and sleep pressure play a bigger role than any “method”

✨ What’s actually happening in your baby’s nervous system during sleep transitions

✨ Why independent sleep isn’t something you teach — it’s something they grow into

✨ Responsive ways to support sleep without forcing separation

If “drowsy but awake” made you question everything… just know it’s not you. It’s the advice.

Tune in for a validating, science-backed conversation that will help you understand your baby’s real sleep needs and feel confident supporting them in a way that feels good for both of you.

This week on the podcast, we’re chatting with Ashley — a mom of two and professional organizer who is on a mission to help overwhelmed mothers create more simplicity, ease, and breathing room in their homes.

Ashley opens up about her own journey into motherhood, the moment she realized her space and routines needed to work with her instead of against her, and how organizing became a way to find calm in the beautiful chaos of raising little ones.

S3E4 F*ck Around and Find Out’ Parenting — Are We Swinging Too Far?30 Oct 202500:38:23

In this episode, we’re diving into the viral trend of “f*ck around and find out” parenting — and unpacking what’s really going on behind it.

We talk about the extremes of this style compared to gentle and authoritative parenting approaches, and how easy it can be to swing from one end of the spectrum to the other when we’re feeling burnt out, overstimulated, or just plain done.

We also share some honest (and funny) real-life examples with our own kids, exploring where natural consequences make sense and where connection still needs to lead the way.

This conversation is about finding that middle ground — where boundaries are clear, empathy stays present, and our kids learn through relationship, not fear.

If you’ve ever felt torn between being “too gentle” or “too strict,” this one’s for you. 💛

S3E3 Finding Answers: Mariel’s Journey with Her Son16 Oct 202500:51:16

In this week’s episode, we’re joined by Mariel, one of Aleni’s past clients, who opens up about her journey navigating her son’s sleep — a journey filled with challenges, advocacy, and ultimately, connection.

Mariel’s little one struggled with multiple medical issues, including reflux and oral ties, which made sleep incredibly difficult in those early months. Like so many parents, she was told over and over that the solution was to sleep train. But instead of following the noise, Mariel chose to follow her instincts.

Through working with Aleni, she focused on uncovering the root causes of her son’s frequent night wakings while continuing to meet his needs in a responsive, connected way — and yes, happily bed sharing the entire time.

This conversation is such a powerful reminder that you can support your baby’s sleep without abandoning your intuition. You can be responsive and make progress. And most importantly — you don’t have to choose between sleep and connection. 💛

We also share some of our own personal experiences with night weaning and stories from clients we’ve supported—because this process looks so different for every family.

S2E37 Contact Naps Aren’t a Problem: Why They Matter + How to Shift (If You’re Ready)12 Jun 202500:20:43

Contact naps are one of the most common — and misunderstood — parts of infant sleep. In this episode, we’re breaking down why contact naps are not only normal but also deeply beneficial for your baby’s development, regulation, and sense of safety.

We’ll explore why babies crave closeness during the day (even if they sleep independently at night), what’s really happening biologically during contact sleep, and how to shift away from it gently — without sleep training — when and if you’re ready.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, touched out, or simply wondering if you’re “creating a bad habit,” this episode is here to remind you: contact naps are not a step backward. They’re a sign of a securely attached baby — and there are supportive, connection-based ways to transition when it’s the right time for you.

S2E36 Short Naps Aren’t Crap Sleep: What’s Normal + What You Can Do05 Jun 202500:35:14

If you’ve ever rocked your baby to sleep, tiptoed out of the room, and then watched the monitor light up 27 minutes later — we see you. In this episode, we’re unpacking the truth about short naps.

We’ll talk about when they’re completely normal, why they don’t automatically mean your baby is a “bad napper,” and how the popular “crib hour” method actually misses the mark when it comes to supporting healthy, responsive sleep.

You’ll also hear simple, connection-based strategies to gently support longer naps without using any form of sleep training. Whether your baby is taking 20-minute catnaps or you’re just wondering if it’s supposed to feel this hard, this episode will remind you: short naps aren’t a failure — and there is another way.

Let’s be real—navigating baby sleep as a couple can feel really complicated when you’re not on the same page. In this episode, we brought on our husbands for a candid conversation about what happens when one parent wants to sleep train… and the other doesn’t. We asked them the hard questions—“Do babies need to learn to self-soothe?” “Isn’t picking them up all the time creating bad habits?”—and let them share their honest thoughts and concerns. We also reflected on our own experiences—what those early disagreements around sleep looked like, and how we worked through them without resentment.

This episode is for any parent who feels stuck between wanting to protect connection and feeling the pressure to just do something to fix sleep. We unpack what’s really behind the desire to sleep train & talk about how to respond when you don’t agree and how to hold your boundaries without taking on all the night duties alone. Because sleep is a family issue—not just “Mom’s job.”

Whether you’re the partner saying “no thanks” to sleep training, or the one feeling unsure of what else to do—this one’s for you. Supporting your baby doesn’t mean doing it all alone, and choosing connection doesn’t mean chaos forever.

S2E26 Developing Sleep Associations With Other Caregivers27 Mar 202500:27:35

Does your child insist that only one parent put them to bed? You’re not alone! Bedtime is a vulnerable time, and children often cling to the parent they associate most with comfort and sleep. But this preference isn’t rejection—it’s simply an attachment pattern built through routine. The good news? Attachment is flexible, and with patience, children can build trust and comfort with both caregivers at bedtime.

In this episode, we’ll explore a gentle, connection-based approach to introducing another caregiver into the bedtime routine—without forcing it or causing distress. We’ll discuss why children develop strong bedtime preferences, small steps to ease into shared bedtime responsibilities, and how a predictable routine can help kids feel safe regardless of who is putting them to sleep. We’ll also talk about strengthening connection outside of bedtime to make transitions smoother and why it’s okay if each parent has their own way of settling a child to sleep.

If bedtime has become a one-parent job in your home and you’re looking for a gradual, attachment-focused way to help your child adjust, this episode is for you. Tune in for practical, reassuring guidance to help your child feel safe, secure, and supported as they learn to embrace bedtime with both parents.

We’ll talk about what’s actually normal when it comes to infant sleep, how newborn development impacts sleep patterns, and why it’s crucial to get on the same page about night wakings, feedings, and supporting each other through the exhaustion. Because let’s be real—no one functions well on zero sleep, and feeling like the entire mental and physical load of parenting falls on you? That’s a fast track to resentment. Let’s talk about how to set realistic expectations, communicate your needs, and create a plan that actually works for your family.

In this episode, we’re diving into Dr. Gordon Neufeld’s concept of counterwill—a developmentally normal, instinctive response to feeling controlled. Counterwill isn’t defiance for the sake of defiance; it’s a protective mechanism that helps toddlers assert their autonomy while preserving their psychological boundaries.

We’ll explore why this behavior shows up most strongly during toddlerhood and how it’s tied to attachment. You’ll learn practical, connection-based strategies to navigate these moments, from playful approaches to respecting your child’s autonomy with simple choices.
