First class of the new series. We begin with the title page of Tanya.

Learning chapter 6. The composition and modes of expression of the animal soul. The definition of holiness.

The Ten Utterances of creation are only rightly called such from the subjective perspective of the created beings.

The twenty-two letters are building blocks that through re-arrangements and substitutions, diminish the original power of the creative energy so that different creating beings can emerge. This diminishing effect may be likened to the sun's light reflected by the moon.

We begin Chapter 7 and discuss more in depth the idea of the "neutral" kilipah called nogah.

Continuing chapter 7 and discussing how permissible acts require mindfulness in order to be elevated to holiness.

Concluding chapter 7, we discuss the power of teshuvah to transform past sins into merits. We also discuss how to rectify the spiritual damage caused by the emission of seed in vain as well as forbidden relations.

In our study of Chapter 8 we delve deeper into an understanding of the spiritual status of that which is halachically forbidden as well as how it affects the person who indulges in it.

In our study of Chapter 9 we are introduced to the parable of the two kings fighting over the small city, which helps us to understand the nature of the conflict between the two souls.

We begin Chapter 10 which speaks about two levels of tzaddik—the complete and the incomplete. What is the difference between them? How does a tzaddik regard the selfish gratification of physical pleasure?

Chapter 10 concludes with a discussion of the "men of ascent"—another way of describing the unique personality of the complete tzaddik.

Chapter 11 deals with the very wide spectrum of personalities encompassed by the tern "rasha v'tov lo." We also contrast this level with that of the "rasha v'ra lo" who is incapable of remorse.

Chapter 17 continues describing the purpose of meditation as producing emotions. It explains the meaning of the verse from the title page "This matter is very close to you..." and how that can be true even though it seems to go against our personal experience.

Chapter 18 begins a description of another method for achieving emotional congruence with Torah behaviors.

Chapter 19 of Tanya describes the instinctive nature of the G-dly soul by comparing it to a flame. Rabbi Taub connects this lesson to the Hayom Yom of 21 Sivan.

In Chapter 28, we discuss what to do if we cannot concentrate during prayer because of distracting thoughts.

This week, we begin Chapter 29 which addresses the serious issue of spiritual apathy. What are the underlying causes for this condition and how is it remedied?

Not for the faint of heart. Continuing Ch 29, we get into the details of the self-administered process for smashing the ego.

Concluding Ch. 29 of Tanya, we explain the underlying mechanics of why removing the complacency of the ego automatically leads to an influx of faith. Also, we discuss this generation's need for alternative, gentler methods for ego reduction.

Chapter 30 of Tanya begins by citing the teaching of our Sages to be humble before all people. But how can we legitimately feel humility before everyone, even those who are extremely morally weak?

Continuing Ch. 30 in which we are charged with humbling ourselves before all, even the wanton sinners. Is our struggle as intense as theirs or are we coasting?

Beginning chapter 2. The origins of the "second soul" or "G-dly soul."

Beginning Ch. 31, we address the burning question that now arises: what if the methods of unflinching personal stocktaking outlined in the previous chapters bring on a negative emotional state? If we established in Ch. 26 that joy is essential, how could we employ methods that may cause us to feel bad?

Concluding Ch. 31, we discuss the role of healthy frustration with the body and taking joy in the delight of the soul.
