583. THE VALUE OF THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS16 Jul 202400:24:46

When Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested that it's the journey, not the destination, that matters, he may not have had higher education in mind. That said, applicants often overlook what really matters on the road to college. Amy and Mike invited college consultant Arthur Smith to explore the intrinsic value of the college admissions process.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. What does the college admissions process entail in general?

  2. What is actually involved when you focus on "the process" instead of the outcome?

  3. How can focusing on "the process" lead to more satisfying outcomes in the admissions process?

  4. What roles do ambition and authenticity play in the college admissions process?

  5. In what ways does learning how to focus on the process set students up with a valuable life lesson that goes beyond the college applications?

MEET OUR GUEST

With 25 years of experience working with students and their parents at Cornell and Duke Universities as an advising dean, admissions chair, and Division I head coach, Dr. Arthur Smith is intimately familiar with what it takes to be successful in the selective admissions process.

Dr. Smith, known as Artie to his colleagues and students, studied history and Africana Studies as an undergraduate in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, where he graduated cum laude and with distinction in all subjects. He continued his education at Duke University, where he earned his MA and Ph.D. in history. Returning to Cornell, Artie served as an assistant director of admissions in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and was the athletics liaison between the seven different admissions offices at Cornell and the university's 36 varsity teams. He then spent nine years as an admissions and advising dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, where he chaired admissions committees and guided hundreds of students through the college's curriculum. His unique journey in higher education has also been defined by a highly successful 23 years of coaching track and field and cross country at the Division I level. A nationally recognized distance coach who worked with 19 All-Americans, 31 Ivy League champions, and 12 Eastern champions while coaching 19 Ivy League Championship teams, Artie was Cornell's head women's track and field and cross country coach.

During his time in the Ivy League, Artie chaired admissions committees and evaluated over 20,000 applications, served as a faculty advisor and advising dean, managed the TransAtlantic Series, an Exchange between Cornell University and Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom, and mentored hundreds of student-athletes.

Artie's teams and athletes were outstanding in the classroom, with six of his students earning CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, two students earning NCAA Elite 89/90 honors, and three going on to win Marshall and Goldwater Scholarships. Notably, every student he coached who applied for medical school, veterinary school, or law school gained admission.

Artie is here to listen and work with each student's goals. His two decades of mentoring experiences contribute to his firm belief that success in college—and beyond—comes from a person's creativity, authenticity, and concern for others. He can help you tell your story.

Artie can be reached at https://www.arthursmithadvising.com.

674. How And Why To Perform Your Best on the PSAT16 Sep 202500:29:59

The PSAT/NMSQT may not influence college admissions decisions, but the test matters in more ways than you might think. Amy and Mike invited educator and author Brian Stewart to discuss how and why to perform your best on the PSAT.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. What role does the PSAT play compared to the SAT or ACT?

  2. What are some of the most common mistakes students make with the PSAT and how can they avoid them?

  3. What study strategies or prep resources are most effective for the PSAT?

  4. What are some ways students can effectively use the embedded Bluebook tools to do well on the PSAT?

  5. What kind of students should focus on the SAT and PSAT at the same time?

MEET OUR GUEST

At the end of his first year teaching Social Studies at Dublin Jerome High School, company founder Brian Stewart thought it would make sense to do some part-time tutoring work over the summer. After all, he had done quite well on standardized tests when he was in high school and really enjoyed coming up with creative ways to explain challenging concepts to students. Other companies charged a fortune and didn't seem to have a high-quality product.

As Brian worked with more students, word spread about the quality of his tutoring services. He started to offer ACT and SAT test prep group classes, and worked with students from all over Central Ohio. In 2011, Brian left his day job to run BWS Education Consulting full time with his wife Caitlin. Applying the expertise from her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, Caitlin has ensured that our teaching materials and methods make high-quality test preparation accessible to students of all backgrounds and ability levels.

In 2012, Barron's Educational Series contacted Brian about submitting samples of his writing as they conducted a national search for their next ACT book author. Brian was chosen to write Barron's ACT, and has gone on to write several ACT, SAT, and PSAT books with Barron's Educational Series. His books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.

In 2014, BWS Education expanded to have associate tutors who teach not only the ACT and SAT, but tutor students in math, science, and writing. Brian and Caitlin personally interview and train every tutor on our staff to ensure they are the best in the business. BWS is a team of committed educators who relentlessly look for the best way to deliver educational enrichment to our clients, whether it's test prep, academic help, or college admission counseling.

Brian appeared on the podcast in episode #33 to discuss PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship, in episode #383 to discuss Should You Prepare for the PSAT, in episode #507 to discuss The New Digital PSAT, and in episode #590 to discuss How To Prep For The Digital PSAT.

572. HOW TO GUARANTEE CAREER SUCCESS AFTER COLLEGE28 May 202400:28:41

An undergraduate education should never be mistaken for a job training program. That said, gainful employment is usually the obvious expectation after graduation. Amy and Mike invited educator Bill Coplin for thoughts on how to guarantee career success after college.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. Why is coursework alone not enough to explore and get jobs?

  2. Is there academic coursework that would help build skills, experience, and networks?

  3. How should students increase their chances of getting internships and/or part-time jobs?

  4. Are some colleges better than others to help students gain skills through experience and build networks?

  5. What steps are essential for students who don't know what they want to do after graduation?

MEET OUR GUEST

Based on his experience mentoring 2,000 alumni over the past 50 years, Bill Coplin knows how undergraduates can be ready for the next step after graduating college with or without going to graduate school.  Success is not guaranteed by the brand of the University, the degree program chosen, or the GPA.  Employers want students to demonstrate skills that include taking responsibility, communicating effectively, interacting with people, and developing computer and analytical skills.  To do this, students should see undergraduate programs as a Skills Gymnasium where they practice these skills in the classroom and outside the classroom, while they are building their networks through student activities, jobs, internships, and community service.

Bill can be reached at https://billcoplin.com.

567. GETTING READY FOR THE AP COMPUTER SCIENCE A EXAM26 Apr 202400:27:50

The Advanced Placement exams represent some of the most challenging subject-specific standardized tests a high schooler might ever take, and AP Computer Science is no exception. Amy and Mike believe that every test warrants smart, serious preparation, so we invited educator Edward Lee to share valuable strategies, insights, and resources for getting ready for the AP Computer Science A exam.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. What is tested on the AP Computer Science A exam?

  2. How do AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles differ?

  3. What are the highest priority topics on the test?

  4. How should students prepare for the AP Computer Science A exam?

  5. What are the best prep materials for AP Computer Science A?

MEET OUR GUEST

Edward Lee is the owner and founder of Lee Tutoring, which he built from the ground up to make online test prep and academic tutoring as engaging and valuable as possible for digital natives. He has nearly a decade of experience in test prep and a bit more than a decade with computer science tutoring. While he originally intended to earn a degree in Computer Science, his love for teaching won out and he earned his degree in Philosophy instead, which he completed alongside a thesis on Samuel Beckett's novels and learning as overcoming "good sense." He's been tutoring full-time ever since!

Edward's life mission is to reconcile his interest in both the cutting-edge field of computer science with his interest in classical education. In 6th grade, his father packed a copy of The Iliad into his backpack for some "light reading," but it hardly fit next to the Arduino project Edward had constructed for his physics class. His commitment to a socratic approach is symbolized by the Ionic column motif in Lee Tutoring's logo and his approach to technology is evident in the source code he writes to keep his business running!

Edward and his team at Lee Tutoring have helped well over a thousand students achieve their goals on the SAT and ACT. Edward has personally helped dozens of students prepare for the AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Calculus AB/BC exams.

Edward can be reached at leetutoring.com.

673. Preparing For A College Admissions Interview09 Sep 202500:26:18

Someone once said that interviewing is tough, especially if you don't know what you're looking for. Another complicating factor is having no answer to predictable questions–a regrettably common occurrence for higher ed applicants. Amy and Mike invited educator Alison Slater to explore the importance of preparing for a college admissions interview.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

  1. Why is it important to prepare before an interview?

  2. Are interviews impactful considering that many schools don't offer them?

  3. Should students who are offered interviews take them?

  4. Who should prep for interviews and when?

  5. How can students prepare for all the interviews they are likely to have coming up?

  6. What are some questions applicants should be prepared for?

MEET OUR GUEST

Alison Slater graduated from Bucknell University and worked in selective college admission for fifteen years. Interviews were her favorite part of the college application process, but she found they were often missed opportunities when students arrived nervous or unprepared. They were checking a box, not maximizing an opportunity. Alison founded Interview Prep to help students make strong impressions by preparing thoughtfully and approaching each interview with confidence and a plan.

Alison can be reached at interviewprepllc.com.

562. TESTING POLICIES AND EDUCATIONAL EQUITY REVISITED16 Apr 202400:27:42

Theories that standardized testing impeded equity in admissions decisions drove the pandemic-era test optional movement. With a few years of real-world data, we can now examine the accuracy of those theories. Amy and Mike invited student advocate Dr. Yoon Choi to revisit the review of testing policies and educational equity.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

1. What does the research say about testing and equity?

2. How do standardized tests help predict college readiness?

3. Why do many states and school districts in the U.S. use the SAT and ACT tests as part of their high school graduation requirements, accountability and evaluation systems?

4. What might surprise people about the research on testing?

5. Instead of casting blame on the tests themselves, what should those who want to improve education and equity focus on?

560. BUSTING MYTHS ABOUT HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE02 Apr 202400:26:51

Some rumors about the costs of college are true. For example, some colleges this year will establish record highs in tuition and fees. But does that mean you can trust everything you've heard? Amy and Mike invited educational consultant Ann Garcia to bust some pervasive myths about how to pay for college.

What are five myths that are busted in this episode?

Myth #1: We're not poor and our student isn't an athlete, so we're stuck paying full price for college.

Myth #2: I have a 4.6 GPA so I will get merit scholarships wherever I apply.

Myth #3: My Student Aid Index/EFC is what it will cost me to go to college.

Myth #4: Full pay students shouldn't bother filing the FAFSA.

Myth #5: We shouldn't save for college because we will get more financial aid if we don't.

MEET OUR GUEST

Ann Garcia has helped thousands of families save millions of dollars on college. She is the author of the critically-acclaimed "How to Pay for College" and a sought-after media guest who's been quoted in the New York Times, U.S. News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, and Money magazine, to name a few. Ann recently launched an interactive online course to help parents (and their advisors) affordably build savings for college and apply for aid into their broader financial plan. As a parent whose twins just graduated debt-free from college, Ann's expertise expands beyond FAFSAs and 529s — she understands the emotional components of helping your child set and achieve goals for their future. Outside of financial planning, Ann is an avid runner, skier, and fan of middle school rock concerts.

555. IEC PROFILE:Tracy Sullivan25 Mar 202400:17:21

Ready to learn the history, philosophy, and practice of an experienced independent educational consultant?

MEET OUR GUEST

Meet Tracy Sullivan. Tracy, co-founder of College 101 Admissions Consultants, lives in Wrentham, MA with her husband Jim, who is a scientist (very helpful during COVID-19!).   A graduate of Providence College, Tracy built a successful career in both sales and as a serial entrepreneur. A mom of two college graduates, Tracy continues to cheer her kids on as they pursue their own professional dreams. Her daughter Rachel is building a very successful career with a technology company in Boston, while her son Shane is a first year law student at Boston College Law School.

For Tracy, college is personal. A firm believer that college literally changed her life and therefore could be life-changing for others, Tracy has worked for the last 8 years to assist friends and family through the admissions process. This struck a bigger vision that set her on her course to turning her passion into her profession as a certified admissions consultant. In her own words, Tracy says, "I love being part of the process. I'm a total college-nerd at heart, so visiting campuses and talking with students about where they're going to school or what their experiences have been like - it's just fun for me!"

From Tracy's perspective, a college education is an investment that will pay off for years to come, and it's important as young adults know the value they have given their future selves. The right fit can lead to a transformational experience.

As a board and council member with The Providence College National Alumni Association Council (NAAC) for 8 years, Tracy considers her passion for higher-education a deeply ingrained and valuable piece of who she is today. In turn, a valuable way to give back to her alma mater. When she's not in the office, you'll find Tracy hiking, taking in a motivational thought leadership piece, or just watching a good old-fashioned Hallmark mystery movie.

The bigger question is, "Which one?" Amy and Mike invited educational consultant Julie Kim to explore considerations on how to choose a college counselor.

What are five things you will learn in this episode?

1. How do you know if you need a college counselor?

2. What are some of the most important traits to look for in an IEC?

3. What can a small or solo practice provide that big box solutions cannot? (accountability and consistency)

4.  Is specialization desirable or even necessary in an IEC?

5. What do students and families need to bring to make college counseling successful?
