| What Nonprofit Communicators Need Right Now: Stories, Strategy, and Staying Human | 01 Apr 2026 | 00:47:26 | |
What does it really take to communicate about hard things in a way that actually connects? In this episode, Laurie, OAESV's Resource & Engagement Manager, takes you inside her experience at Create Good, a conference for nonprofit communicators, and unpacks what it means for those of us working in sexual violence response and prevention. From burnout and “doing more with less,” to storytelling that centers dignity (not pity), to navigating AI, social media shifts, and internal expectations, this episode is a frank reflection on the future of nonprofit communications and how we show up in it. If you’ve ever wondered if communications work really matters in nonprofit spaces, this conversation will remind you: it does. Follow OAESV on Facebook and Instagram @oaesv. | Welcome to Teal Talk | 29 Mar 2023 | 00:01:40
Hello and welcome to Teal Talk. We’re your hosts Taylr Ucker-Lauderman and Laurie Hamame. This is a podcast where we discuss issues affecting survivors of sexual violence in Ohio. We interview professionals in the field to help spark conversation and break down barriers to building communities free from sexual violence. So, who are we? We are the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence–that’s OAESV for short. As Ohio's statewide coalition, we advocate for comprehensive responses and rape crisis services for survivors. We recognize that intersections of different types of oppression and discrimination all contribute to a culture of violence. So, we want to empower communities to prevent that harm, and to honor the wide variety of identities and backgrounds that exist. That’s where you come in! We turn to you, our audience, for questions and topics to discuss, and to be a part of the solution to ending sexual violence once and for all! As we know, there is power and strength in the collective. Join us every episode for discussions that will close the gap between where we are right now and where we want to be. Let’s dive in! | The Power of Providing Choices to Survivors with OAESV's Managing LAV Attorney Stephanie B. Scalise | 01 Mar 2024 | 00:31:28
As advocates, we know this work all comes down to consent - or lack thereof. When survivors decide to pursue the legal system, they may not be ready for just how often they will feel like the concept of choice is being taken away from them. That's why trauma-informed advocates and attorneys are the real key to making change. In today's episode, we are joined by OAESV's Managing LAV Attorney Stephanie B. Scalise, who oversees our Legal Clinic. This Clinic is proud to stand as Ohio’s only legal services provider dedicated to solely to protecting the rights of survivors of sexual violence. The Clinic bridges the gap in services for survivors of sexual violence who are often left out of other legal services programs. This episode is a reminder of the power of asking someone, "What would you like?" The OAESV Legal Clinic holds virtual office hours to provide a safe space for Ohio survivors and their advocates to connect with an attorney. Virtual office hours will allow survivors to discuss legal options, connect with resources, and/or have a brief consultation.

| Survivor-Centered Spiritual Care with Brenda Glass of The Brenda Glass Multipurpose Trauma Center | 01 Feb 2026 | 00:25:33 | |

In this episode of Teal Talk, we’re joined by Brenda Glass, Founder and CEO of the Brenda Multi-Purpose Trauma Center, to explore survivor-centered spiritual care. Brenda shares how belief systems shape healing, how trauma can disrupt spiritual connection, and what it looks like to support survivors without imposing faith or reinforcing shame. | Addressing Critical VOCA Funding Cuts with Rosa Beltré, Doug Stephens, Elyse McConnell, Catherine Harper Lee, Gwen Howe-Gebers, Danielle Vandegriff, and Mary O'Doherty | 15 May 2024 | 01:04:40
Welcome to a special bonus episode of Teal Talk! Organizations across Ohio are facing unprecedented cuts to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) fund, threatening the availability and quality of services for victims of crime across our communities. These cuts directly impact essential services such as rape crisis support, advocacy at prosecutors' offices, and shelter for survivors of domestic violence.
To address these challenges and advocate for immediate action, we hosted a live broadcast featuring coalition leaders from victim-services organizations across the state. This broadcast happened April 24th on Facebook and Youtube, and provided a platform for our statewide leaders to discuss the potentially devastating impact of VOCA cuts on our communities. Moderated by our very own President and CEO Rosa Beltré, this crucial discussion was to raise awareness about the urgency of this issue and urge lawmakers to prioritize funding for victim-services organizations. Rosa was joined by Doug Stephens, Executive Director at OhioCASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates); Elyse McConnell, Executive Director, Ohio Victim Witness Association; Catherine Harper Lee, Founder and Executive Director, Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center; Henry County Prosecutor, Gwen Howe-Gebers, of the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association; Danielle Vandegriff, CEO and Executive Director, Ohio Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers; and Mary O’Doherty, Executive Director, Ohio Domestic Violence Network. | More Than Food: Understanding the Connection Between Eating Disorders & Sexual Violence with Sarah Bergen of The Emily Program | 01 Feb 2025 | 00:30:01
Calm, pleasure and satisfaction are what most people experience after eating. But for people with eating disorders, food brings anxiety, disturbance and noise. In today's episode, host Laurie Hamame sits down with Sarah Bergen, Regional Medical Director of Ohio for The Emily Program eating disorder recovery center, to explore the intersection of sexual violence and eating disorders. This episode provides a powerful discussion on the complexities of eating disorders, especially how they intersect with sexual violence, PTSD, and trauma. The key takeaway is that EDs are serious mental health conditions that require proper support and treatment—but recovery is possible. | Providing Safe Housing for Survivors of Sexual Violence with Jazmin Vera of OAESV | 01 Dec 2023 | 00:28:25
For many survivors, home is not a safe place. They may need to leave due to sexual violence happening in their home, being perpetrated by household members, landlords, or neighbors. Others may need to find safe alternative housing to heal from and lessen the effects of the trauma they have experienced, especially if the person who perpetrated the assault knows where they live. Our Meaningful Access Housing Program provides temporary housing to sexual violence survivors through a hotel stay. In the first 6 months of this groundbreaking program, we provided 334 nights of shelter! For episode 9 of Teal Talk, we sat down with Jazmin Vera, Housing & Economic Empowerment Manager, who built this program for OAESV from the ground up. July is Disability Pride Month! This term ‘disability’ coupled with ‘pride’ is sometimes seen as oxymoronic by able-bodied people and that alone makes our guests Cierra Olivia Thomas-Williams and Jody Michele of Indiana Disability Justice even prouder to call themselves disabled and proud. Whether this is your first time hearing about Disability Pride Month or it’s something you celebrate every year, this episode will give a basic overview of what this month is really all about, elevate disabled voices, and reflect on how much ableism is still left to combat in our governments, medical system, and interpersonal relationships more broadly.
