S4 Ep16: Weird Things That Only Teachers Say10 Dec 202300:54:47

Teacher Talk You Won't Find Anywhere Else!

Welcome back to another episode of Teachers Off Duty, the podcast where the classroom meets comedy! I'm KC Mack, joined by the always fantastic Bri and Liz. This week, we're diving into the wild, weird, and wonderfully wacky world of things only teachers say. Trust us, you won't find these phrases in any other job!

As soon as that school bell rings, the adventure begins. But let's face it, our students sometimes seem like they're on a different planet. We've got a treasure trove of classic teacher sayings, from the perplexed "Why is this wet?" to the authoritative "The bell doesn't dismiss you, I do!" We teachers sure have a way with words.

And let's not forget the infamous "teacher look" - that one glare that can silence a room faster than turning off the lights. We're breaking down how we master our teacher's voice while keeping the class in check (and our sanity intact). Ever had to explain why eating crayons doesn't lead to colorful outcomes? Yep, we've been there too.

So whether you're a teacher, know a teacher, or just love a good laugh, tune in to Teachers Off Duty and join us as we explore the unique, hilarious, and sometimes downright bizarre world of teacher talk.

S4 Ep15: Things We Wish Non Teachers Knew!03 Dec 202300:55:53
The real story behind teachers' "paid" holiday "breaks".

Myths, facts, and down right lies. Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty! Join us as KC Mack and guest hosts HonestTeacherVibes and Liz Blanc share what we wish non-teachers knew.

First, all-too-common misconception that teachers enjoy a paid summer vacation. We're here to clear the air and bring the facts.

We're also shedding light on the extra duties teachers often juggle, like covering additional classes. Yes, in some districts, teachers wear multiple hats, and we're not just talking about those stylish berets.

Let's not forget the great school supply mystery. Ever wonder why teachers constantly seem to be on a quest for more supplies? We're unraveling this conspiracy, revealing the often overlooked struggles for resources in education - and who are the actual heroes.

S4 Ep14: Things in School That Get on Teachers' Nerves26 Nov 202301:04:50
From smelly teaching lounges to animal infestations in the classroom!

Welcome to this week's laugh-a-minute episode of Teachers Off Duty! KC Mack is back with Bri and we've roped in a special guest to unpack the pandemonium of our beloved school buildings.

Ever had a student turn a routine bathroom break into a rescue mission? We've got stories of bathroom escapades that'll have you double-checking these school bathrooms.

From the mystery of whether students brave the student bathrooms to the ever-present jingle-jangle of admin keys that sound like the approach of an educational Santa Claus. And who can forget the wildlife? We're not just talking about the students here but also the mice infestation and wasp invasions!

We'll dive into the culinary catastrophes, like that time a teacher ate the school lunch where they later  lived to regret it, and the aromatic adventures of microwaving last night's fish in the staff room.

Don't even get us started on those fundraising chocolates that taste like they've been aged in a locker since last semester. And let's pour one out for the lack of windows, mysterious disappearing doors, and the ice bag debacle.

So, if you've ever found yourself questioning your life choices amidst the wild world of school, join us on Teachers Off Duty. Tune in, laugh, and remember – you're not alone in this wonderfully wacky world of teaching!

Welcome to another laughter-laced episode of Teachers Off Duty, where the bell never rings on our offbeat adventures in education. Our host KC Mack is joined with Bri and a special guest, as they take us through the secret diary of school secretaries. You thought teachers had tales? Buckle up, because these front-desk dynamos are the true unsung heroes of the hallways.

Brace yourself for a love story with a twist. One audacious student tried to woo a school secretary with a charm offense that deserves its own sitcom episode. We're still debating whether it's romantic or just plain hilarious.

We've got a tale that's truly for the birds – a teacher who's turned into a schoolyard sensation, all thanks to a feathered friend. And if you thought that was wild, get ready for the story of a school secretary turned handclap outlaw. Yes, you heard that right. We're unraveling this bizarre brush with the law that's got more rhythm than a school band.

This week, Bri, KC Mack, and Anna are diving into the wild world of standardized testing — the stress, the funny fails, the endless paperwork, and why it makes both teachers and kids lose their minds.

From shimmying across the Bored Teachers Comedy Tour stage to debating if kindergarteners should really be tested on life skills (like tying their shoes ), the crew gets candid about how testing impacts classrooms everywhere. We're talking testing buckets, crazy school rules, snack scandals (Oreos?!), and why teachers end up pacing thousands of steps during exam week.

And of course, it wouldn't be TOD without plenty of laughter, roasting, and a few Disney detours (because yes, somehow state testing and Disney magic do connect).

Whether you're a teacher, parent, or just here for the laughs, this episode will remind you why educators everywhere deserve a standing ovation.

Welcome to this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty! Join KC Mack, Sam Salem, and Chinedu Unaka, as they reminisce about the glorious pre-iPhone age, when "Copy & Paste" was a classroom myth, and burning CDs for your crush was the peak of romance.

Dive in with us as we take you wayyyy back, maybe even before the 90s, to the days of Aristotle, where apparently even then they were complaining about "kids these days."

Laugh along as we roast a tale of a well-meaning admin whose attempt to halt a brawl might have been the most *strike out* moment in history. Oh, and nothing — we mean NOTHING — will ever match the thrill of the TV cart rolling in on a Wednesday afternoon. Chinedu's got a few golden quips to share on that!

Pull out your boombox and denim overalls as we transport you back to the era when classrooms were armed with bulky TV carts and cheating on tests was an Olympic sport.

Welcome to Teachers Off Duty, where we take a break from the classroom to talk about the real lives of educators in the most hilarious way possible. In this episode, KC Mack is joined by the hilarious Sam Salem and the wildly popular Chinedu Unaka to reveal teachers' biggest secrets.

Sam, Chinedu, and KC drop the mic with hilarious stories about their time as teachers. From Sam telling the story of an older lady who asked him to take off his shirt during a Bored Teachers Comedy Tour show, to Chinedu defending the movie "Remember the Titans" as the end of racism, this episode has it all.

Listen in as the trio dives into the funny occasionally serious tales of being an educator, including stories about teachers who don't know how to use a copy machine, those who crop dust the class and blame it on their least favorite student, and others who bribe students for favorable behavior during admin observations.

Plus, the gang plays two truths and one lie, with KC taking naps, getting another teacher to do his plans, and bribing a student as his three statements. Sam has his own battles including filling the principal's car with balloons, letting his little sister grade term papers, and eating lunch in the car to avoid other teachers. And you won't believe whether or not Chinedu took a student's mom to Applebee's, what he sang in a talent show, and how he started working out with the custodian in the basement tie and all.

Listen now to hear Teachers Off Duty as KC Mack, Sam Salem, and Chinedu Unaka reveal teachers' biggest secrets.

On this episode of Teachers Off Duty, we're diving into those side-splitting moments that make us realize why we love (and sometimes facepalm at) our jobs as we wade through the things students do that make us laugh out loud.

Andrea kicks us off with a rib-tickling tale of forbidden frog feasts, complete with post-bite regrets, that led to the inception of the "No Eating Dissection Subjects" waiver. Ever thought biology was boring? Think again!

Jay recounts the admirable tale of a teacher soldiering on through a student's spew-tacular mishap. Yes, the show (or lesson) must go on...even if it's got a little extra "goo" involved.

KC shares about a student who mixed romance with humor. And speaking of mix-ups, remember that time students turned toilets into ketchup geysers? Apparently, PlayStation wasn't exciting enough! Though KC does remind us not all pranks are in good taste, like that lugnuts loosening trend... not cool, kids!

Harmony in the classroom? Jay unveils his "harmonious groups" system – where students are the rulers of their own comedic kingdom. And KC? He tells us a story that truly buzzes with humor, featuring a backpack with a rather...vibrant personality.

Remember searching for Waldo? Well, KC recounts how some teachers were left scouring for a non-existent chicken, thanks to some senior pranksters and their numerical hijinks. Jay also has an automotive tale where students prove they have way too much time (and perhaps engineering skills?) on their hands. Beetle on the second floor, anyone?

Join us for the giggles, the groans, and all the absurdity in between. Trust us, you don't want to miss this!
S4 Ep3: The Most Disturbing Stories of Teachers Quitting10 Sep 202300:50:52
Kc Mack, Andrea Caspari, and Jay Yoder are back to swap tales of classroom decor, daring escape plans from bullying students, and why feeding Flaming Hot Cheetos to fish is an extreme sport that only ends in tragedy as we talk about what happens with students take pranks to the extreme!

Andrea kicks it all off with a story of a well-intentioned (and well-funded) teacher's decor dreams crushed by an overnight switcheroo, while Jay champions the art of outsourcing decor to his homeroom students. Why buy when you can delegate, right? Meanwhile, KC Mack's DIY decor approach? Using school supplies for the ultimate hack.

Ever felt bullied? We share heartbreaking stories of teachers bullied to the point of resignation, a sobering reminder of the struggles educators face daily. But before you think it's all doom and gloom, we've got some downright wild student pranks to share - ever heard of a fish killed by spice or a kid's dangerous 'cocktail' that had a teacher on sabbatical?

Of course, who can forget the school bus tales? From rule-flouting drivers blaring Lil Jon on the morning route, to the truly horrifying pranks some bus drivers endure, we dive deep. And shoutout to Andrea's bus-driving hubby for holding down the fort on the school bus battlegrounds!

To wrap up, we salute the inventive substitute who blended in with her students just for a meal, proving once again that teachers are the ultimate problem solvers. This episode is downright wild, folks, and it reminds us all: Respect the educators. They've seen things you wouldn't believe.

S4 Ep2: The Funniest Stories From The First Week Of School03 Sep 202300:45:42
As we continue to kick off our new season with the dynamic trio of Kc Mack, Andrea Caspari, and Jay Yoder, we're rolling out the chalkboard for some of the most unforgettable first-week tales you've ever heard.

Andrea gets us started with that cringe-worthy moment a student called her out for being "sweaty." But if you thought that was shocking, wait until you hear Jay's tale of a maintenance worker, an old typewriter, and an unfortunate pacemaker mishap. KC, not to be outdone, recalls that legendary freshman who made a literal entrance by putting his head through a ceiling tile. LEGEND!

Recall the energy of Mr. Packet, that teacher from Andrea's past with a penchant for battle axes, and feel the rhythm with KC's breakdancing educator. Relive Jay's catholic school memories, from his own "wet" experiences to KC's tales of unforgettable nuns. But, it's not all nun and games. Andrea's intense cross-road journey to get 32 eight-year-olds safely to mass at a Christian school will have you on the edge of your seats.

And because teaching isn't just about what happens inside the classroom, we dive into the side hustles of educators and ponder on whether sharing family photos in class is a genius move or a recipe for disaster. Meanwhile, KC unravels a story of a teacher, a simple bathroom break, and an unexpected streaker. If that doesn't get you laughing, Jay's childhood habit of seeking attention with his "middle finger" antics surely will.

From Andrea's bee-sting saga to Jay's jaw-dropping revelation about ghosting teachers on day one, this episode is a roller-coaster ride of emotions, chuckles, and sheer disbelief.

Join us, as we weave comedy, teaching, and real-life experiences into an episode that proves the classroom is where the heart, hilarity, and sometimes, a hint of chaos, truly is.

Hold onto your hall passes, educators! We're kicking off a fresh season of Teachers Off Duty and let's just say, the bell's ringing but nobody's behaving. Join our first round of hosts — Kc Mack, Andrea Caspari, and Jay Yoder — as we spill the tea on the most absurd substitute teacher tales you've ever heard. We've got snack-snatching subs who prefer their confiscated goodies with a side of nicotine, and let's not forget about the fashion-forward (or backward?) sub with toe shoes, a love for microwaves, and socks that have seen better days.

Ever had an MMA-fighting sub? Ours not only dealt with busy work but also with principals... in a not-so-academic way. Wondering about the efficacy of using your classroom as a comedy club? Well, between Casey's anecdotes and Andrea's belief that the classroom is the ultimate joke-testing ground, we've got some thoughts. And, bless Jay's heart for unveiling the secret world of side-hustling subs and their... entrepreneurial spirits.

Amid the laughs, we touch on real issues: sub shortages, the challenges (and hilarious misadventures) of tech in the classroom, and the bizarre world of A.I.-penned resignation letters. By the end, between learning about Casey's eye-opening discovery of student hacking skills and Jay's enviable vacation tales, you'll be in stitches! And a big shoutout to Mr. White—may your sea turtle-inspired lessons forever swim in our hearts.

Get ready, dear listeners, because whether it's Netflix dual screens, tie-tying lessons, or heartwarming acknowledgments, this episode is a wild roller coaster through the substitute saga. Strap in, and let's make some mischief!

46: Student Snacks That Drive Teachers Crazy13 Aug 202300:50:00
Do you love snacks as much as teachers do? Tune into this deliciously entertaining episode of Teachers Off Duty where Lauran, Tell, Bri, and Gabe delve into the delectable world of "teacher snacks".

Ever wondered what your teachers stash in their desks? Tell starts off the snack fest confessing his love for candy, while Gabe, mid-conversation with Lauran, reaches over to snag some Cheetos. No one said teachers can't have fun, right?

Gabe shares a relatable moment, guiltily munching on Oreos during his students' test. He also reveals his odd fondness for 'grandpa candy', sparking off a trip down memory lane about Lauran's grandma at church.

Is project-based learning a ploy to feast on preferred snacks? Hear what Tell has to say on that. But it's not all fun and games - apparently, teachers at Tell's school can only have clear liquids. Discover the hilarious tale of forgotten hidden coffee that followed this rule.

In a twist of irony, while Gabe can gulp down coffee, Tell reveals why he avoids it. Hint: It involves an awkward conversation with the principal.

The conversation turns serious when Gabe emphasizes the importance of letting kids eat breakfast and ensuring they're well-nourished. But it's soon back to laughs with Tell's amusing story about "Pirate's Booty" snacks and an intriguing discussion on developing allergies later in life.

Enjoy a delicious round of 'Good or Garbage with Gabe' that focuses on Chocolate Milk Fridays. Here's the kicker: Apparently, the FDA is considering a chocolate milk ban. Can school life survive this?

Bri shares her strict 'no school lunch' policy, while Lauran has a surprising take. This leads to a fiery debate about the quality of school lunches and a nostalgic trip down memory lane involving plate-sized chocolate chip cookies and Otis Spunkmeyer treats.

From Gabe's food shoutouts to Lauran's innovative dinner dice for decision-making, there's a feast of food fun. The episode wraps up with Bri's funny tale about a student-run Instagram account that crowned her the 'eating champ'.

Join us on Teachers Off Duty for a smorgasbord of snack stories and discover the lighter side of the teaching profession. Bon appétit!

S3 Ep41: Teaching Students with Pop Culture09 Jul 202300:50:23
Your favorite teachers are off duty and looking at the role of pop culture in education. From reminiscing about our favorite teacher movies to cringing over creepy teacher portrayals, we discuss it all. Remember Ms. Frizzle? Or the Kindergarten Cop? Yeah, we dissect those too!

Ever wonder how pop culture can aid classroom teaching? Lauran takes us back to her rockin' Wax Museum project, teaching history through the lens of Hall of Fame musicians. Gabe shows us how he turns up the volume in his class with music, teaching subconscious understanding through lyrical analysis. Don't worry, he'll explain what that means.

We also tap into the fashion flashback and the hilarity of kids not knowing the pop culture references on their own shirts. Good or garbage with Gabe keeps it classic this week, as we debate the nostalgic thrill of the TV cart wheeling its way into the classroom. Is the TV cart good or garbage, we all know the answer!

In the world of gaming, who can forget the good old Oregon Trail? We revisit some educational games and the unintended scares they gave us. Wrapping it up, we discuss how fictional Hogwarts classes could potentially stack up in a real-world curriculum.

It's a pop culture frenzy you wouldn't want to miss. Tune in!

S3 Ep40: Summer Jobs or Summer Daze – What Teachers Do For Summer Break02 Jul 202300:51:52
Summer Break is well upon us, so in this episode, we're diving headfirst into a pool of freedom, and resurfacing with hilarious tales from our sun-drenched (or not-so-sun-drenched) summer escapades. We kick off with what teachers REALLY do during the summer - yes, there's more to us than lesson plans and report cards. We share all teachers' unanimous need for a break.

Tell talks about the apparent difficulty of juggling parenting and teaching. Shout out to teachers who are also parents! Meanwhile, Gabe and Lauran put their summer fitness goals under the microscope, or should we say, 'under the ice cream scoop'?

Ever wondered what we did during the summers before we became the cool teachers you know and love? We reminisce about our worst summer jobs. Get ready for tales of spicy chicken wings, cleaning other people's mess, a summer of... kidney stones (whoa, Tell!), and a fling with phlebotomy that didn't end famously.

We wrap up the episode with a debate on summer PD and training in our segment, 'Good or Garbage'. So kick back, pop open a cold (name your favorite summer-time beverage), and get ready for a dose of fun, sun, and a fair share of 'we-can't-believe-that-happened'.

Summer Break, you're the BEST!

S3 Ep39: The Most WTF Moments We've Had At School25 Jun 202300:46:43
We're feeling nostalgic recalling the rollercoaster ride that is a school assembly. Brace yourself for Tell's ridiculously hilarious take on students' unionizing, and Gabe's priceless narration of a middle school anti-drug assembly gone very wrong. Not quite the inspiration we were looking for.

In the spirit of safety (and hilarity), Lauran introduces us to the most memorable fire safety magician, who taught kids about safety while pulling a rabbit out of his... fireproof hat? We also relive the terror of the legendary fundraising assembly skits. And let's not forget Tell's revelation about grade inflation, sparking a debate filled with wit and sarcasm.

We're also applauding our heroic students in this episode. From a 7th grader taking over a bus when the driver faints, to a brave class handling their teacher's unexpected fall, these kids give us hope for the future.

Just when you think it can't get any crazier, we cap off the episode with a story about a school with a very unwanted guest, pretending to be a substitute teacher. We promise it's even wilder than it sounds!

Join us for a jaw-dropping trip down memory lane in the world of school assemblies. We assure you, it's an episode you won't want to miss!

S3 Ep38: Let's Talk About Inclusivity In The Classroom18 Jun 202300:40:45
Welcome to the latest episode of Teachers Off Duty, where Inclusivity is the name of the game. We discuss everything from addressing student anxiety to the wholesome value of homeroom chit-chat (it's more than just idle talk, we promise!). We recount Mr. M's innovative approach to connecting with students.

Our conversation turns serious as we tackle the tricky topic of selectively teaching in history. Our stance? Give them the truth. We believe in teaching kids HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

Join Lauran, Tell, Bri, and Gabe, as we explore how inclusivity in the classroom can go from a buzzword to a lived reality. It's a wild ride, but we promise you'll leave with more than just a few teacher tricks up your sleeve. And maybe, just maybe, a new outlook on inclusivity in education!

38: The School Year No Cap Recap11 Jun 202300:52:19
Lauran, Tell, Bri, and Gabe are moving into full recovery mode and are starting summer break off right with their own version of a school year recap. Be prepared to laugh out loud as Gabe trolls students using their slang incorrectly and Bri regales us with the story of a student claiming divinity. Yes, you read that right, the child said, "I am a god". We're still chuckling over Lauran's fairy tale dedication to Ryan Reynolds and the ensuing social media frenzy that followed.

Tell provides a hilarious commentary on the mystical art of reading books for pleasure during the school year, and we each share our unique reflections on the rollercoaster of teaching. There's a student teacher finding her stride, a classroom romance navigated, and even a tale of a misinterpreted science Pictionary clue that you'll have to hear to believe.

Ever wondered what happens when coffee spills all over a teacher's pants? Gabe spills the beans (or in this case, the coffee). We're reminiscing on the brilliant absurdity of our classrooms, like that time when Tell had to explain a miraculous fish resurrection to his students.

In addition to these hilarious stories, we discuss the poignant moments of our teaching journey by reflecting on student growth, standing up to unruly parents, and celebrating our role in the lives of our students.

We also debate on school hand dryers - are they good or garbage? Gabe give us the details, and Tell has a lot to say about kindergartners reaching up to dry their hands.

Join us for a recap of the school year that will leave you laughing, crying, and maybe even glad it's over!
