50: Tandem - Paul Paquet & Matt Lamia21 Oct 202400:17:56

We made it to FIFTY!

Why not make episode 50 a Tandem Mode game? Paul Paquet is back for his third search for It’s Always Sunny and history content- but his first since episode 20, so he was due. He faces off against first-timer, Matt Lamia who was in search of MLB, Friends, and 80s Music. It was a fun game, so I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did hosting.

And since we're celebrating #50, I'll be adding some extra benefits to the Patreon memberships on Halloween night. There's still time to join us and help support the show!

Quick note: Paul will be presenting another great World Trivia Night event on November 1. You should definitely check it out at this link: https://cafott.ca/annual-events-cafo/world-trivia-night/

Coming up next time on Episode 51, we’ll have Alan Kreisel taking his first turn at the game. See you then!

49: Tony Schmit14 Oct 202400:26:13

It took 48 episodes for the “Peterson Shuffle” to be employed for the first time, but only one more episode for it to get a second run. Tony Schmit joins us from Minnesota for his first attempt at the game, and he did his homework to craft quite a strategy. You’ll have to listen to see if it paid off.

Episode Links:

Coming up next week - IT’S EPISODE 50! We’ll have Paul Paquet and Matt Lamia facing off in a special Tandem Mode game. We’ll also be doing something special for the Patreon crew, so stay tuned for that.

Greg has won big money prizes on the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and The Chase, but he’s finally made it to the big time…Tangents. You have to listen to Greg play the game in a way no other contestant has to this point.

THANKS!

46: Tandem - Luc Leavenworth & Tim Gomez23 Sep 202400:14:14

Luc is right back for another game - this time a test run for the Tandem Mode version with fellow Patreon supporter, Tim Gomez. This actually isn’t the first time they’ve met though. As it turns out, they were both in the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire green room at the same time! They’re obviously outstanding trivia players with Meredith Vieira asking the questions, but what about when there’s much less at stake?

Episode Links:

Next up, we’ll have Jeff Clear back in the hotseat for Episode 47.

45: Luc Leavenworth16 Sep 202400:13:33

Luc Leavenworth (Ep. 22) is back to take another swing at the game this week, in search of questions on 90s nostalgia. I always enjoy hearing Luc play, and you will too.

44: Tandem - Chris Hernandez & Cheyenne Fletcher09 Sep 202400:21:56

This is a special “Tandem Mode” episode of Tangents. At this stage, the game was very much in the alpha testing phase and the first two test subjects to step up were Patreon supporters Chris Hernandez and Cheyenne Fletcher. For this game, we’re just trying to workout gameplay and timing, so this one will be relatively quick - but by the time this gets fleshed out and all the stuff that isn’t good gets yanked out, we should have a fun game in place.

Big thanks to Chris and Cheyenne for their help on this test. None of us knew what was going to happen as we went along, and they rolled with it perfectly. Your feedback is going to be NEEDED on this, so head over to the Discord or Facebook group and let me know what you think.

43: Mike Baney02 Sep 202400:43:50

Mike Baney joins us from Charleston, South Carolina in search of questions on professional wrestling and fantasy/sci-fi. I won’t spoil it for you, but he may have found some other subjects that he knows a thing or two about. Enjoy!

60: Prateek Chellani29 Dec 202401:01:59

Prateek was back in the hotseat trying to improve his score of 11 from Episode 34. This time he was trying to find questions about 2010s Bollywood Movies, 21st Century Formula 1 Racing, and the 23-24 Men’s Roster for something that he forgot to specify. :)

If you’ve peeked at the episode length, it’s no spoiler to say he did a little better this time. Enjoy!

Thanks Prateek!

42: Monya De02 Sep 202400:08:56

It had to happen eventually. Technical gremlins have affected much better podcasts than this one, so it was only a matter of time. Unfortunately, we ran into some tough luck with this one and lost some of the audio from the game. Normally, it would be easy to just scrap it and start from scratch - but the glitch wasn't noticed until after the next game was recorded...so, it turns out there's a small problem with this linear format.

Nonetheless, we press on. Monya was a great sport in spite of some wifi challenges, and hopefully she will return for a more technically sound episode soon.

Episode Links:

Again, apologies for the tech snafus. It won’t happen again might happen again, but hopefully not.

41: Brian Irving26 Aug 202400:41:40

Brian Irving had a pretty good run his first time through in Episode 6, racking up an impressive 29 points. This time around, Brian got off to a bit of a rough start, but was able to right the ship thanks to one particular category. Have a listen and see how far that got him.

Shanondoah comes to us from up in the greater Toronto area just seven weeks after hubs Shaun tried his hand at the game. 35: Mike Brownstein22 Jul 202400:12:36

Our old pal, Mike from Ukrainian Trivia Resistance is back this week for another go at a quiz. This is the second of five recordings where the gameplay may have suffered a bit because of some experimentation with the format, but Mike was a great guest, as expected. I hope you enjoy it.

    34 - Prateek Chellani15 Jul 202400:17:12

We’ve got yet another member of ProgChamps building a quiz this week, with Prateek joining us from Pittsburgh in search of questions about 21st Century Bollywood Movies, 2010s Formula One, and the FC Barcelona roster (kind of). He did find something that worked out pretty well!

    33: Stacey Melquist08 Jul 202400:28:47

One of our favorite ProgChamps, Stacey Melquist is back for another shot at building the perfect quiz. She was in search of questions on subjects like reality competition shows like RuPaul's Drag Race, and 80s Music. Mini-spoiler here...she does manage to track down at least one of those topics.

She racked up 15 points in her first attempt (Episode 8), so let's see if she was able to beat that this time around.

    31: Keith Moser24 Jun 202400:30:31

Sometimes it can be tough to get players to loosen up and talk. This was not one of those episodes.

Keith Moser is here this week from Allentown, Pennsylvania looking for questions about Broadway musicals, Oscar-wining films, and math. Spoilers ahead…
    He found one of those.

Another local regular tries the game this week. Jill Staunton has been winning my trivia events around Central Illinois for many years now, but never in a format that let her choose the subjects for every question, so this was new.

She was looking for questions about The Beatles...but did she find them?

    23: Caleb Greyman29 Apr 202400:22:50

Episode 23 takes us down under for the first time for a visit with Caleb Greyman, the writer and host for BrisQuiz Trivia in Brisbane, Australia. Caleb was looking for questions about the periodic table and 1990s Simpsons. Because the majority of my quizzes are set for an American audience, Caleb was at a bit of a disadvantage coming in, but still got to show off some impressive quizzing skills during our time together. I've known this week's guest since he was a youngster, and he started hosting games for Trivia Workshop when he was straight out of undergrad. Now he's heading into an emergency medicine internship, so before he got to busy with the whole saving lives thing, I got him to answer some trivia questions.

    20: Paul Paquet08 Apr 202400:22:59

It's a milestone week for Tangents - TWENTY episodes AND the return of Paul Paquet from the Ottawa Trivia League and the Trivia Hall of Fame. Paul's last quiz ended with some bad luck back-to-back questions about the OJ Simpson trial, so he came prepared this time around.

    19: Kevin Kuschel01 Apr 202400:22:19

This week I get to hang out with one of my favorite trivia players, Kevin Kuschel. I first met Kevin several years ago in St. Louis thanks to a pub quiz at a place called Syberg's and found out there that he's an encyclopedia of music knowledge. For this quiz, he listed "One Hit Wonders" as his specialty subject, but I don't think there's a music question in the database that would stump him. But...did he find his way into those questions?

    18: Harry McGrory25 Mar 202400:21:29

This is the episode where we finally learn the origin of the "busstoptv" username. Harry McGrory from Glasgow (and ProgChamps) was in the hot seat this week, answering questions on a wide variety of (sometimes misleading) topics. He listed The Beatles as his specialty subject.

    17: Madeleine Garvey18 Mar 202400:11:24

Madeleine Garvey is next up in the hot seat this week, in search of questions about Video Games and Taylor Swift. She's one of our regular players on the Tuesday night Twitch stream with the Bad Mustache team, so if you'd like to see how you would fair in a real head-to-head matchup, join us in real time every Tuesday night at 8pm Central!

    16: Ali Baig11 Mar 202400:24:31

Ali Baig is a ton of fun to talk to, so we ended up chatting about the quiz business for more than 30 minutes before we even got to the "First Five". For the sake of time, I trimmed that out of this episode, but it may show up in a special episode soon, so stay tuned.

Ali is the founder of Baig of Tricks Entertainment in the burbs of Chicago and a real raconteur. It was an utter blast hanging out with him, so you can expect future visits.

Check out the links below for more from Ali (and me).

    15: Tim Gomez04 Mar 202400:16:28

First there was Edwards, then came Dippel, now episode 15 brings us our third Tim - Tim Gomez! It was good to finally put a face and voice to the name behind Where's My Elephant/incoherant9 on our Twitch games - and I learned quite a thing about some Peanuts characters as a bonus!

    14: Brittany Shaw26 Feb 202400:32:48
The MCU Infinity Saga and the Tudor Monarchy may not have much in common other than the fact that this week's guest was trying to find questions about either of them. When she's not in the guest seat on other podcasts, she's hosting her own, the Frenemy Trivia Podcast along with past guest Tim Dippel. 13: Brian Waldron 19 Feb 202400:26:36

    11: John Liu06 Feb 202400:21:24

Santa Monica isn't just the home of America's most famous pub quiz. It's also the home of this week's guest, John Liu. John is part of several online quiz leagues, and took advantage of the abundance of internet quizzing during the last four years to become much more proficient at pop culture trivia.

His expert subject though is video games. Plenty of content on that subject in the database - but was John able to track it down?

    10: Mike Brownstein29 Jan 202400:17:22

Another online regular tries their hand at Tangents this week. Mike Brownstein, one of the Ukrainian Trivia Resistance members heard that there was no spelling required for the podcast version of the game, and used that to his advantage. Mike is a great guy, and a great quizzer...and apparently deep into non-trivial things like disc golf. Be sure to check his LinkTree below for more info on that!

    9: Paul Paquet 22 Jan 202400:17:49

Paul Paquet is one of the best - and most prolific trivia writers on the planet. Having Paul play the game made me realize what it must be like for the chefs on Kitchen Nightmares when Gordon Ramsay is trying their Beef Wellington.

He is the man behind The Ottawa Trivia League, and The Trivia Hall of Fame, and for many years has provided the questions for the annual World Trivia Night in Ontario. He's also a budding thespian, so be on the lookout for Paul at the Oscars soon.
