In this episode of Talking Toddlers, we examine a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of early child development: YOU.
Yes, that's right—this conversation focuses on YOU - the mama, the parent, and grandparent.
While much of the dialogue around toddler development centers on the child, it’s essential to recognize the SIGNIFICANT role you play in shaping their progress.
We'll explore WHY your involvement is paramount, HOW to self-reflect and evaluate your approach, and the IMPACT of your daily interactions.
-- Before diving into developmental charts and milestones, take a moment—perhaps at the end of the day or early in the morning—to consider some essential questions about your role.
Understand that YOU are your toddler's number one influence.
-- By making small adjustments in how you show up, you can profoundly impact your child's development.
Whether you're filled with love, worry, exhaustion, or even dealing with other personal challenges — remember that you CAN and DO make a difference.
-- We’ll break down the raw facts of your child’s waking hours and compare them to the time spent with professionals.
Despite the expertise of speech therapists and early intervention specialists, you have a substantial 70 hours a week with your toddler.
— These are the hours that truly count.
Join me, Erin, as we discuss practical ways to leverage your unique position to support your child's speech and language growth and development.
-- It’s not about doing it all perfectly; it’s about being present, intentional, and believing in your ability to guide your child.
Tune in to learn how you can make a lasting difference, supported by neuroscience, human biology, and over 35 years of my experience in the field.

Whether you're a seasoned mom or a first-time mama-to-be, you won't want to miss this eye-opening discussion.
You don't need to interact with and entertain your baby during every waking moment.
Babies need time on their own, too, so they can gradually start to understand that they're independent from you.
Slowing life down a bit and letting your child be bored can have lots of benefits.
One of the first things you may notice - even in very young babies - is that it allows them to explore on their own.
They seek out what interests them instead of relying on us to provide them with something to be interested in.
Your little one deserves the best, and it starts with embracing the beauty of boredom.
That’s where boredom gives children an inner quiet that helps with imagination and self-awareness.
=====================
In this episode, we'll uncover 10 essential strategies that every new mom can use to harness the power of natural boredom.
Let's break the myth that constant entertainment is the answer and explore how giving your child the space to BE BORED can actually lead to more fulfilling, imaginative play.
If you're ready to unlock the magic of building independent play and nurturing your child's healthy development, join me on this insightful journey.
It's the magic potion that sparks language, supercharges social skills, and boosts emotional intelligence.
The 3 top benefits of pretend play.
Language Leaps:
Pretend play acts as a secret language workshop for your little one.
As they engage in imaginative scenarios, they're not just playing – they're experimenting with words, tones, and expressions.
This playful chatter is a significant building block for their language development, turning every tea party and superhero adventure into a language-rich classroom.
Social Skills Supercharge:
Picture this – your toddler hosting a teddy bear picnic or sharing toys with imaginary friends.
These make-believe interactions aren't just adorable; they're social training grounds.
Pretend play helps toddlers grasp the nuances of sharing, taking turns, and understanding others' perspectives.
It's a social skills boot camp that happens organically through play.
Emotional Intelligence Boost:
Behind those superhero capes and tea party tiaras lies a world of emotions waiting to be explored.
Pretend play allows toddlers to express, understand, and navigate a range of feelings in a safe, imaginative space.
It's like a mini therapy session, helping them build emotional resilience and empathy – crucial tools for a lifetime of healthy relationships.
Remember mom, you're not just facilitating play; you're laying the groundwork for a confident, communicative, and emotionally intelligent little human.
Embrace the magic of pretend play – it's more than just fun; it's a language and life skills powerhouse for your toddler.
In this week's episode, we continue our exploration of the vital stages of babbling with your baby, delving even deeper into the intricacies that shape their cognitive and communicative abilities.
Building on last week's discussion, we unravel the significance of cooing and babbling as precursors to language development, offering valuable insights for new moms eager to support their baby or toddler at home.
Unlike common advice to "just wait," I firmly believe that understanding and actively engaging with your baby/toddler during these early stages is paramount.
I emphasize the importance of being intentional during these crucial moments as I share insights from the rich history of research on early child development, shedding light on the often-overlooked significance of babbling.
This episode goes beyond theory, providing practical strategies and everyday activities that empower you to enhance both cooing and babbling skills in your little one.
It's about building a strong foundation for future language acquisition and ensuring your child is on the right track.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and with the right knowledge and intentional actions, you've got this.
Let’s step up together and make a positive impact on your child's developmental journey!
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the fascinating world into the crucial stages of babbling with your baby. To ensure a thorough understanding of the subtle distinctions between each stage and how best to gauge your baby’s or toddler’s growth, I've split this remarkable exploration into two episodes.
We explore the significance of both cooing and babbling as precursors to language development, serving as windows into your child’s cognitive and communicative abilities. For those with older toddlers, these insights will help determine if they're slow talkers, plateaued, or right on track.
Drawing from over three decades of clinical practice and real-life experience, I guide you on why being intentional during these moments is paramount.
Unfortunately, not many professionals discuss the significance of babbling, perhaps because they don’t fully understand it themselves. More importantly, the common advice to "just wait, he’ll find his way" is, in my opinion, evasive.
I share insights from the rich history of research on early child development, emphasizing the importance of actively engaging with your baby during these formative stages.
Understanding these early cues can empower you to foster optimal linguistic growth right from the start.
Practical strategies and everyday activities to enhance both cooing and babbling skills are discussed, promoting a strong foundation for future language acquisition.
As always, the tone of the podcast is a blend of loving encouragement and firm guidance, mirroring the nuanced approach of parenting itself. Remember, you've got this—now, step up!

Today’s discussion sheds light on the genuine concerns mothers face and how these often go unaddressed or overlooked in routine pediatric consultations.
These concerns, sometimes dismissed or brushed aside, create an undercurrent of anxiety for new moms navigating the uncertainties of parenthood.
One specific area of concern is the use and understanding of the screening Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers - Revised/Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) during the 18 and 24 month well-child checkups.
Erin pulls back the curtain and shares details of this important tool and how you can guide your pediatrician through it better.
Erin acknowledges the common worries new mothers have and the complexities of addressing them within the confines of short medical appointments. She emphasizes the significance of open, honest dialogue between mothers and pediatricians, encouraging a supportive environment where concerns are respectfully heard and thoroughly addressed.
This episode stives to empower mothers to advocate for their children's needs and highlights the importance of seeking second opinions or further assessments if their worries persist.
Listeners gain practical tips on how to effectively communicate their concerns to pediatricians, fostering a collaborative partnership that prioritizes the child's well-being.

Fussy babies, pacifiers, self-soothing, and self-regulation…
We continue the conversation in this week’s episode as there seems to be a lot of nuances we can’t overlook.
oral motor development (how your baby’s mouth is shaped)
speech sounds and eating skills
breathing and upper respiratory health
sleep, rest and recovery
Remember, my purpose is to demonstrate how EVERYTHING is related - especially in those first three years …
Our PRIMARY GOAL - help your baby / toddler develop into a happy, healthy, engaged and curious 7 year old.
This episode, I cover 5 Tips To Help Settle Your Baby (only one small part is using a pacifier).
Although there are periods where it may feel like we won’t last … I promise the more we focus on the moment, trying different strategies - the more you’ll both find peace.
It's a common 'go to' and has been around for centuries, so why are there so many questions?
Do ALL babies use pacifiers?
Are there possible risks or side effects?
What can I do INSTEAD to help my fussy baby?
In this episode I cover these questions and strategies to build your understanding, make a plan and create a strategy for each stage of your baby's first year.
All babies are not equal ... you know that, so we have to sometimes step back and look at a variety of possibilities.
While pacifiers have some benefits, there are some downsides. And since many babies often fall in love with theirs, it’s worth considering both sides of the debate before you introduce them.
After listening through to this week's episode, you'll feel much more confident and ready to ease your baby's fussiness ... with and without a pacifier.
Kids and snacks go together like peanut butter and jelly, but for parents, the non-stop requests for more food can leave you frustrated and burnt-out…and perhaps wondering why?
The truth is that toddlers' bodies need plenty of healthy, nutrient-dense calories to support growth and development.
But kids also need boundaries to help them make smart, healthy choices when it comes to what (and when) they eat.
By using 5 Simple Steps like meal schedules and open discussion about hunger, you can help your toddler learn how to listen to their bodies.
In this episode we cover WHY kids end up snacking/grazing all day and HOW you can redesign your kitchen habits.
By the way, I include a few hard facts on how food companies make it feel (almost) impossible to eat healthy … but you don’t have to buy into them (pun intended).
Success can look different to each of us ... but I bet you have some 'idea' of how you see your toddler in the future ... confident, curious, helpful, kind, creative?
How can we help him or her achieve that?
Well it starts with PLAY ... to explore their environment, try new things, and solve problems (through play) they build confidence, social competence, and emotional stability.
Listen to this week's episode to hone your understanding of the best form of PLAY!
OPEN-ENDED PLAY ...
It is play with no direction, no limits, rules, or interference.
It is letting your child use his imagination free from predefined limits or expectations.
No amount of technology can do for the developing child’s brain what a box, a pile of clay, or a tub of wooden blocks can do.
You don’t need expensive toys – nor do you need a lot of toys.
For engaging, self-directed learning to happen in your home, you need toys to encourage open-ended play.
Show them a few ideas ... set the stage ... and then let them run with it.
As you prepare for the holiday season ... keep it simple. Keep it healthy. Keep it fun.
In this episode I cover some exciting NEW SCIENCE that helps us understand developmental risk factors and how much influence we have on our babies and toddlers.
If Autism is genetic, can we do anything to minimize its impact?
Are we stuck with what we have inherited, or can our environment influence how our genes unfold?
What about the Nature vs Nurture debate? Does it matter?
I love to question science, because I was taught science is never settled. This seems especially true with early child development.
Take a listen and let me know what questions you have.
It's exciting times and I'm delighted to share my insights.

Many parents intuitively know the importance of play in child development, but despite its many benefits, we rarely associate play with LEARNING.
For most people, learning involves acquiring a specific new skill, such as memorizing alphabets, counting, or colors and shapes.
They often believe that playing is only for fun and involves no "actual learning."
However, according to studies, playing is learning. Children learn through everyday experiences - that are playful, interesting, engaging, rewarding and thought provoking.
The importance of play in early childhood cannot be underestimated --- because learning through play is essential to a child’s growth and well-being.
In this episode I explain the 7 Early Stages of PLAY ... from birth through 36 months.

There are now many well-researched studies that prove beneficial effects of physical activity on:
brain power
motivation & concentration
memory & reasoning
classroom attitudes & behaviors
language skills
Evidence show that physically active kids have brain synapses that fire faster and stronger, and are 20% more likely to earn better grades (not that grades are the end goal), but overall academic performance, social skills and self-esteem are!!!

In this episode I cover three main mistakes many parents, therapists and teachers unknowingly fall into that makes it harder for toddlers to learn how to speak.
I've learned over the years in private practice, that once your toddler starts using words, we often forget they are still in the "process" of developing phrases and sentences.
Learning to "listen" and learning to "understand" are two different processes.
We may assume they can "keep up" with our rapid speech rate, and when they can't... they often shut down.
We all need reminders to SLOW DOWN, give some wait time, and be patient.
Take a listen with an open mind. Be willing to consider making a few changes just might open your toddler up to chatting more and melting down less.
I know you're feeling overwhelmed most days, just like your toddler.
Give you and your family some space to relax and truly enjoy the moments these summer days can provide - if you let them.

How To Discipline Your Toddler With Ease & Confidence Ep 49
Learning how to discipline a toddler without totally loosing your cool is possible.
Here are a few concepts I cover in today's episode ... YOU'VE GOT THIS:
Praise your child’s good behavior, but do so without giving external rewards.
Start labeling how he feels instead of putting him in a timeout or giving empty threats and warnings.
Make sure his needs are met, making him less likely to throw a fit.
Set boundaries and establish your expectations about how you treat one another.
Focus on staying calm above all else—this will help you think clearer and him to settle down as well.
Yep, even as he reaches for the cord or drops his food all over the floor... you are calm and level headed.
Toddlers learn quickly ... if we are clear, consistent, and calm.

Guess what, our toddler doesn't really understand all that much ... yet!
When we say, "don't throw your food on the floor!" All they hear is THROW - FOOD!
They love it when we yell, get excited and move our hands up and down as we run to pick up, intervene, or recover our mess.
Guess what, you just reinforced their "naughty" behavior!
YIKES ... what do we do instead? How can we teach them "to behave" or to share, table manners, and waiting their turn????
Listen to this week's episode, and I will share the SECRET SAUCE!

Know the behaviors that are "telling you" his ability to wire-up and regulate is a bit different, unique and perhaps challenging.
Does it interfere with learning, social connection, and engagement?
We need to understand & respect differences - and at the same time create environments where all kids can blossom into their BEST VERSION.
These are MOST COMMON "red flags" that ALL PARENTS should be aware of ... the more informed you are, the better your decisions can be.

Today’s episode is about limiting beliefs - how they may influence how we parent our children, how focusing on behavior can create power struggles, and how we can alter our parenting style to parent with our kids instead of over them.
Typically we take on limiting beliefs unconsciously, often in childhood. Relationships with primary caretakers, teachers, coaches influence us as we are dependent on these people when we’re young.
Erin encourages each of us to be open to pay attention, listen to the soft whispers … shine some light and rewrite.
Parent with your children, not over them.

Watching your baby grow is one of the best parts of parenting: first smiles, words, and steps are moments many of us remember for the rest of our lives.
There are also subtler baby milestones, like when your baby begins reacting to music or uses their tongue to move food around in their mouth.
All milestones, big and small, are important to your child’s development
Milestones are meant as guides rather than strict barometers of developmental “success.”
Developmental windows—periods of time during which your child is primed to learn a new skill—are flexible and variable.
They depend on a number of factors, including interest and temperament.
Your almost 2 year old is AMAZING and his behaviors help you see inside his cognitive & emotional development.
Don't just look at the basic skills, you want to understand the finer nuances - and watch your toddler FLOURISH.
In this episode, I cover these areas:
Speech
Meaning & Concepts
Play & Movement
Interaction & Expression
Grammar
You don't want to miss out ... each stage flies by, but you'll be ready after listening to this episode.
And remember:
Be Present
Be Playful
Be Purposeful
