Does Your Toddler Focus on THIS — But Not on You? Ep 17129 Sep 202600:24:26

Does your toddler seem able to focus deeply on a screen, but struggle to stay with a book, sit through a meal, play independently, or listen when you need him to?

In this episode, Erin looks beyond the surface and explains what attention actually asks of a developing child. A screen may be very effective at holding attention, but real-world attention is built through movement, participation, repetition, curiosity, problem-solving, connection, and everyday life.

You’ll also hear why sleep, nutrition, routines, background noise, movement, and the overall pace of the day matter so much. Toddler development does not happen in separate categories. Language, motor skills, regulation, feeding, attention, and behavior are constantly developing together.

Erin also explores why simple play is often more valuable than it looks, why boredom can create room for imagination and curiosity, and why screens are never developmentally neutral for very young children.

Most importantly, this episode will help you stop asking only, “Why won’t my toddler focus?” and start looking more carefully at the environment and experiences shaping his attention every day.

Because attention is not simply something your toddler either has or doesn’t have.

It develops through experience.

Why Everything Becomes a Battle With Your Toddler Ep 17022 Sep 202600:31:26

When every little thing starts feeling like a battle, the problem may not be the cup, the shoes, the bath, or leaving the park. The final trigger is often only one part of a much bigger developmental picture.

In this episode, I’m helping you widen the lens.

We’ll talk about why toddler skills are still emerging, why having a skill is not the same as being able to access it under every condition, and why a child who handled something beautifully yesterday may struggle with it today.

We’ll also look at:

• Why the trigger and the whole cause are not necessarily the same thing
• What executive function actually means in a two- or three-year-old
• Why “he knows better” may not tell you the whole story
• How sleep, food, movement, language, transitions, and the environment affect behavior
• Why normal frustration does not always mean “dysregulation”
• How repeated everyday experiences shape the developing brain
• Why two- and three-year-olds can look surprisingly different as memory, language, and persistence grow
• How to begin noticing patterns instead of reacting only to the final behavior

Your toddler’s brain is developing in real time.

And so is your ability to understand what you’re seeing.

My goal is not to give you another parenting script to memorize. It is to help you become more observant, more discerning, and more confident in knowing what your child actually needs from you.

Because the little years are the big years.

Your Toddler Understands You. So Why Won’t He Listen? Ep 169 15 Sep 202600:28:47

“I know he understands me. So why isn’t he listening?”

If you’ve ever thought that about your toddler, this episode will help you look at the moment a little differently.

Understanding your words and being able to follow through are not the same developmental skill.

Before your toddler can respond, he may need to register your voice, shift his attention away from what he is doing, process what you said, organize what comes next, and tolerate the interruption or transition.

And sometimes, he understands perfectly well and simply does not want to do it.

That matters, too.

In this episode, Erin looks at what may be happening between understanding and doing — and why the answer is not always more words, more reminders, or another parenting script.

You’ll hear how deep play, attention shifting, inhibition, sequencing, routines, and everyday participation all contribute to your toddler’s ability to follow through.

Most importantly, this episode is about helping you become more confident in what you are seeing.

Is your child still developing the skill?

Does he need help getting started?

Or does he simply need you to calmly and confidently lead?

Your toddler is learning how to move from understanding into action.

And you are learning how to recognize what is getting in the way.

If you have a specific situation with your toddler that you keep replaying, Erin offers free 20-minute Clarity Calls to help you look more closely at what may be happening underneath the behavior.

When Should You Help Your Toddler - and When Should You Wait? Ep 16808 Sep 202600:39:22

When your toddler is struggling - with a zipper, a shoe, climbing onto something - how do you know if you should step in or wait?

In this episode, early child development specialist and speech-language pathologist Erin Hyer (nearly 40 years working with toddlers and the families raising them) breaks down the difference between productive struggle and genuine overwhelm - and gives you a simple question to ask in the moment: is my child still available for learning?

You'll learn:

  • Why your toddler's brain actually needs some struggle to grow (and where that principle comes from)
  • How to tell productive frustration apart from real overwhelm - before it escalates
  • The one question to ask instead of "do I help or not": what's the smallest amount of support that helps my child succeed?

This episode also connects back to two ideas from earlier in the series: episode 166's Model, Shape, Practice, Fade framework, and episode 167 on what actually teaches toddlers to talk.

Erin closed her clinical practice a few years ago to do this instead - walk alongside parents before a small struggle becomes a bigger one.

If something in this episode brings a specific moment with your child to mind, bring it to a free Clarity Call - a complementary 20-minute conversation to sort through what's happening and figure out your next step.

Want Your Toddler to Talk More? Don't Practice Words Ep 16701 Sep 202600:31:27

What if the most important part of your child learning to talk happens before he ever says a single word?

Most moms don't start thinking seriously about speech until they're counting words: 18 months, 20 months, two years old.

But talking is not the beginning of language development. Words arrive after months of listening, watching, babbling, gesturing, imitating, taking turns, experimenting with sounds, and learning that communication gets another human being to respond.

In this episode, I share a simple moment from a mothers' group that captures this beautifully. One nine-month-old baby was happily filling the room with a giant “AHHH!” Instead of treating it as noise, I joined her - and expanded what she was already doing. Within minutes, three babies were watching, listening, experimenting, and trying new sounds.

That is how learning happens.

We’ll talk about why language grows through participation, not performance, why questions like “What's this?” and “Can you say ball?” can easily become testing, and how ordinary moments throughout your day give your baby hundreds of opportunities to practice real communication.

I’ll also walk you through my Model → Shape → Practice → Fade framework and show you how it applies from babbling all the way into words and early phrases.

You don't need more speech drills.

You need to recognize what your child is already giving you — and know how to build from there.

Are You Accidentally Teaching Your Toddler to Whine? Ep 166 25 Aug 202600:42:31

Whining is one of the most common - and frustrating - phases of toddlerhood. But often, it doesn’t become a pattern because a child is “bad” or manipulative. It becomes a pattern because it works.

In this episode, Erin Hyer, speech-language pathologist and early child development specialist, explains why toddlers whine, why “use your words” is often too vague for very young children, and how parents can begin replacing whining with clearer, more effective communication.

This conversation is not about punishment, shame, or demanding more maturity than a toddler actually has. It’s about understanding how young children learn, recognizing what they are developmentally capable of, and knowing how to guide them with calm, simple, intentional support.

Erin walks through the difference between whining as a learned pattern and whining as a child’s best available communication in the moment. She also shares a practical framework parents can begin using right away: model, shape, practice, and fade.

If you’ve started noticing more whining lately — or you want to prevent it from becoming your toddler’s default way of communicating — this episode will help you understand the why behind the behavior and what your role is in shaping something better.

Because the little years really are the big years.

7 Everyday Habits That Interfere With How Your Toddler Learns Ep 16518 Aug 202600:57:36

Do you jump in the second your baby struggles? Wipe her face after every bite? Keep the TV or a podcast running because the house feels too quiet?

These are ordinary, loving habits — but sometimes our instinct to help, clean, entertain, or keep things moving can quietly take away the very experiences our babies and toddlers need to grow.

In this episode, Erin Hyer, speech-language pathologist and early child development specialist, walks through 7 loving habits that can slow your child’s development — and explains what is happening underneath each one.

You’ll learn why it matters to:

  • give your child time to struggle and problem-solve
  • prioritize floor time over too much container time
  • protect quiet so language can develop
  • let babies explore food without constant wiping and interruption
  • give toddlers enough time to process and respond
  • allow boredom and child-led play
  • follow your child’s attention instead of constantly redirecting it

This is not about guilt or doing everything perfectly.

It’s about noticing the small patterns that fill your child’s day — and knowing when to step in, when to wait, and when a few extra seconds of space may be exactly what development needs.

Sometimes slowing down is exactly what gives your child enough room to do the growing.

Why Your Toddler Won’t Pay Attention — And What Gets in the Way Ep 164 11 Aug 202601:12:47

What is stealing your toddler’s attention?

If your child seems constantly distracted, overly active, emotionally reactive, or unable to stay with one activity for very long, the answer may be more complicated than simply “they need to learn to focus.”

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin looks at four powerful influences shaping a young child’s developing attention: predictable daily rhythms, restorative sleep, screens and overstimulation, and meaningful play and participation.

You’ll learn why attention is not something we can demand from a toddler, why being still in front of a screen is not the same as developing healthy attention, and how sleep, family rhythms, real-life responsibilities, and open-ended play all influence a child’s ability to regulate, learn, communicate, and stay engaged.

Erin also shares why she believes we need to look much more carefully at the environment surrounding a child before quickly labeling problems with attention or behavior. A developing brain has a history—and patterns of sleep, stimulation, movement, connection, and participation begin long before a child reaches school age.

Most importantly, this is not about blaming parents or creating another list of things to worry about. It is about helping you recognize how much influence you already have through the ordinary rhythms of home life.

Because attention is not built by repeatedly telling a toddler to “pay attention.”

It grows through thousands of everyday experiences where a child is rested enough, regulated enough, interested enough, and involved enough to remain present.

And when attention grows, so do learning, connection, participation, and language.

Stop Telling Your Toddler to Share - Teach This Instead. Ep 163 28 Jul 202600:32:50

Your toddler snatches a toy. The daycare flags it.

Another mom clocks it at a playdate. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a question starts to form: is something wrong with him?

Nothing is. He's just being asked to do something he isn't built for - yet.

In this episode, I break down the real difference between turn-taking and sharing — two skills that get talked about like they're the same thing, but develop on completely different timelines.

You'll learn:

  • Why turn-taking can start as early as 12 months — long before real sharing is even possible
  • The honest age-by-age timeline for when turn-taking, and eventually sharing, actually shows up (it's later than most people think)
  • Why genuine sharing doesn't reliably emerge until somewhere after your child's third birthday
  • How to use the Three P's from episode 161 to build this skill at home
  • Why what gets called "bad behavior" is often just a brain still under construction

This one also gets personal. Almost forty years into this work, I share what the last three decades have actually taught me about the systems built to manage a room of toddlers — not to understand your individual child.

New here? I'm Erin Hyer, a speech-language pathologist, with almost forty years working with toddlers and the families raising them.

This episode builds on episode 161 (The Three P's) and episode 162 (Joint Attention) — you don't need to have heard those first, but they'll fill in the fuller picture.

Grab the FREE one-page Turn-Taking & Sharing Timeline

Next week - episode 164 - we’ll sort through why some toddlers can settle in and focus - while others can't get there at all — and it has a lot less to do with willpower or personality than you'd think.

You Already Do the Most Important Thing — You Just Don't Know Why Ep 162 21 Jul 202600:31:04

You've been narrating everything. Labeling. Reading. Filling the room with language.

And nothing seems to be sticking.

That's because your words only land when your child's attention and yours are on the same thing, in the same moment.

It's called shared attention — and you're already doing it without knowing how much it matters.

In this episode I unpack what shared attention actually looks like between 12 and 24 months, the difference between a request and a shared moment, the connection to autism screening, and the one shift that makes your words actually land. Plus the discipline of the wait — counting to five so your child's brain has room to respond.

One skill. One shift. Two minutes a day.

Why Your Toddler Hits and Bites — It’s Not a Discipline Problem Ep 16114 Jul 202600:38:11

Why does your toddler hit, bite, or throw things—even when you are trying to parent calmly and consistently? Toddler hitting and biting may look like a discipline problem, but for many young children, it begins as a communication gap.

Your toddler is not necessarily choosing to be “bad.” He may be using his body because the language, regulation, and impulse-control skills that should replace the hitting have not developed yet.

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin Hyer, licensed speech-language pathologist with nearly four decades of clinical and real-life experience, explains why consequences alone cannot teach a skill that has not yet been built.

You’ll learn:

  •  why hitting can function as communication
  •  what may be happening before the moment of impact
  •  why repeated correction often fails
  •  how presence and prevention help build the missing skill
  •  what parents can begin doing instead of simply saying, “Don’t hit”

The goal is not to excuse the behavior. The goal is to understand it well enough to teach your toddler a safer, more effective way to communicate.

Because you cannot correct your way to a skill that has not been installed.

Stop Chasing Words. Here's What Comes First. Ep 160 07 Jul 202600:29:26

Your toddler isn't talking yet — or at least not as much as you think he should be. And every piece of advice you've found tells you to do more or wait it out.

Neither one is the answer.

There's a sequence to how talking develops. It doesn't start with words — it ends with them. And if nobody's handed you that sequence, you're either frozen or doing everything at once with no idea what's actually moving the needle.

In this episode, Erin walks you through the staircase that leads to talking — from connection at the bottom to words at the top — and gives you a clear, honest way to figure out exactly where your child is standing today.

This is the third episode in the Cluster 1 series. Episode 158 covered serve and return. Episode 159 covered why waiting doesn't work. This one is the payoff: what to actually build, and where to start.

He'll Talk When He's Ready — Why Waiting Isn't a Plan Ep 15930 Jun 202600:41:41

Everyone keeps telling you not to worry. "He'll talk when he's ready."

You smile, you nod — but somewhere underneath, your gut isn't buying it.

Trust that. Because "ready" is the wrong word — and "wait and see" is not the gentle, neutral choice it pretends to be.

After almost forty years with toddlers and the families raising them, Erin Hyer, speech language pathologist, takes on the second big myth worried parents are handed: that talking just shows up on its own, once a child decides he's ready.

It doesn't. Children don't talk when they're ready — they talk when they're built for it.

In this episode, Erin unpacks why waiting feels like the kind, patient thing to do — and what it quietly costs. She walks through the difference between "ready" and "built," the honest truth about which late talkers really catch up (and why no test can tell you which group your child is in), the third option between panic and waiting, and how to find where your child is on the path right now.

You'll walk away understanding: → Why "he'll talk when he's ready" sounds kind — but isn't neutral → "Ready" vs. "built": what actually comes first → The third option between panic and doing nothing → The real story on "catching up" — and why it can't be predicted → What to watch for, and where your child is right now → The one thing waiting spends that you can never get back

How to Help Your Late Talker — Without More Words Ep 158 16 Jun 202600:36:17

You talk to your toddler all day long. You narrate everything.

And still — he's not talking, or not very much.

So you do what everyone tells you: talk to him even more.

After almost forty years with toddlers and the families raising them, here's what Erin Hyer, speech-language pathologist, can tell you: talking more isn't the fix.

Language isn't built by the number of words you pour in during the day — it's built by the back-and-forth between you and your child.

In this episode, Erin unpacks why "just talk more" is the advice every worried parent hears, where it came from, and why it quietly misses what actually matters.

She breaks down the famous "thirty-million-word gap" and what the research that followed really found, why screens can't build language no matter how "educational" they look, and the one small shift you can start today.

You'll walk away understanding:

→ Why talking AT your child isn't the same as talking WITH him

→ The "thirty-million-word gap" — and what came after it

→ Why screens and apps don't build talking

→ What "serve and return" is — and how to start it at breakfast, bath, and bedtime stories

→ The one shift that does more than a thousand more words

Share this with every mom wondering why her little one isn't talking yet.

Why "No" Doesn't Work for Toddlers Under 3 — And What to Say Instead Ep 157 09 Jun 202600:50:56

If you've ever said "no" to your toddler and watched them do it anyway — you're not failing. You're just missing one piece of information that changes everything.

The developing brain under three cannot reliably process negation. "Don't throw" registers as "throw." "No hitting" registers as "hit."

And the more you escalate, the more you reinforce the exact behavior you're trying to stop.

In this episode, Erin breaks down why throwing, hitting, and grabbing are not three separate problems — they're one neurological reality — and gives you the specific language and strategies your toddler's brain can actually receive and learn from.

You'll walk away understanding:

→ Why "No" fails — and the developmental timeline behind it
→ What's really happening when you lose your patience (it's more honest than you'd expect)
→ Why your toddler laughs when they hit — and what that laugh actually means
→ How to respond to throwing, hitting, and grabbing in the moment
→ The four things that work every time, across every situation

This is the episode to share with every mom in the thick of the toddler years.

Is My Child Really a Late Talker? Use This Checklist to Find Out Ep 15603 Jun 202600:42:31

Is your child a late talker? Or is something else going on?

After 40 years working with toddlers and their families, I can tell you that the term "late talker" gets thrown around so loosely — by pediatricians, educators, and early intervention teams — that most parents are left more confused than helped.

In this episode I'm giving that term its definition back. We walk through a six-area CHECKLIST you can use today, in your own home, to get a clear and honest picture of where your child actually stands. Not a diagnosis. Not a label. Clarity.

We cover what a true late talker looks like, the THREE RISK FACTORS that change everything, why the alphabet and counting don't count toward your child's word total, why gestures matter more than most people realize, and the real TIMELINE for getting help through the system — because most parents don't know it, and not knowing it is exactly why wait-and-see is so dangerous.

Is My Baby Behind? What Milestones Really Mean Ep 15512 May 202600:27:26

Is my baby behind? Should she be crawling, walking, talking, or doing more by now?

If you’ve ever found yourself Googling developmental milestones late at night, this episode will help you breathe, think clearly, and know what to watch.

In this episode, Erin explains what milestones really are — not rigid deadlines, but guideposts that help parents notice progress, ask better questions, and support healthy development in everyday life.

You’ll learn why progress matters more than the “perfect” date, how to think about developmental plateaus, and why parents are not passive observers. Your daily rhythms, interactions, play, movement, sleep, and connection all help shape your child’s growth.

This is not about panic. It is about becoming informed, confident, and curious — so you can support your baby or toddler with more clarity.

If you’ve been wondering, “Is this normal?” this episode is for you.

The Problem Isn’t the Meltdown - It’s How You Respond Ep 154 05 May 202600:28:32

Your baby fusses in the car seat and your chest tightens. Your toddler falls apart when the block tower tumbles. Every instinct says — fix it, fast.

But what if rushing in is quietly preventing the very thing you want to build?

This week on Talking Toddlers, Erin pulls back the curtain on one of the most misunderstood pieces of early development: resilience.

After nearly four decades in private practice, Erin has watched two patterns play out in mom after mom — the 'Rescuer' who soothes every whimper, and the 'Reprimander' who expects her toddler to handle big feelings like a four-year-old.

Both come from love. Both miss the middle.

And the middle is where resilient children get built.

In this episode you'll learn:

→ The clear difference between real distress and productive struggle — and how to hear it

→ Why resilience and emotional regulation are not the same thing (and how confusing them works against you)

→ How co-regulation actually works — your calm is the curriculum

→ The simple 3-word framework — Acknowledge. Encourage. Wait. — you can use today

Erin also shares the story of why she stopped doing direct therapy after watching the children walking through her door change — and what that pattern is teaching us about prevention vs. intervention.

This is the kind of episode every new mom needs in her ears before her baby's first frustration — and the kind every overwhelmed mom needs to hear right now.

The Baby Gear Mistake Almost Every Parent Makes Ep 153 28 Apr 202600:39:09

Your baby didn't ask for a nursery full of gear. She asked for you.

In this episode, Erin breaks down three of the most common baby products on the market — containers, weighted blankets, and white noise machines — and explains exactly why, after nearly 40 years of clinical practice, misusing them concerns her deeply.

You'll learn:

  • Why babies need movement, not containment
  • The connection between floor time, gross motor development, and speech — and why it's more profound than most parents realize
  • What co-regulation actually means and why your presence outperforms every product on the market
  • The clinical origins of weighted blankets — and what happened when they crossed from therapy rooms to Amazon
  • What the research actually says about white noise and the developing auditory brain

This isn't about guilt. It's about giving you the information the marketing never will.

Listening Is a Skill - Here’s How It Develops Ep 15114 Apr 202600:44:24

"My toddler isn't listening."

If you've said those words - or thought them - this episode is for you.

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, speech-language pathologist Erin (with nearly 40 years in early intervention) unpacks one of the most misunderstood parts of toddler development:

listening.

Spoiler: it's not what you think. And it's probably not what your toddler is lacking.

Erin breaks down why following directions is one of the most cognitively complex things we ask of young children - what's actually happening in their developing brain when we give a simple direction like "go get your shoes" - and why inconsistency is not defiance. It's development.

You'll also hear a story Erin tells on herself - the night she gave her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter a full lecture about "blessed language skills" and "remarkable comprehension"... and was met with a look of pure bewilderment. Because even the expert gets it wrong sometimes.

In this episode:

→  Why listening is a skill, not a behavior — and what that changes

→  What the developing prefrontal cortex actually means for your daily life

→  10 practical, daily habits that genuinely build listening (backed by 40 years on the therapy floor)

→  Why "fewer words" works better than any explanation

→  How routines and repetition build understanding from the inside out

→  The difference between "won't" and "can't" — and why it matters deeply

Whether your child is 18 months or 4 years old, this episode will change the way you see those moments when they just… don't listen.

And if you find yourself wanting more personalized support - Erin offers Discovery Calls for families who want clarity on where their child is and what they actually need right now.

Not therapy. Not a diagnosis. Just a real conversation with someone who has been in this field for decades.

You're not alone in this.

Why Your Toddler’s Behavior Isn’t Really About Them Ep 15007 Apr 202600:27:33

Have you ever reacted to your toddler… and then immediately wondered, “Why did I just do that?”

In this episode, we look beneath the surface of toddler behavior and explore a truth that can feel both confronting and freeing: sometimes our reactions have less to do with our child - and more to do with our own history.

I share how early patterns, survival strategies, and emotional wiring can quietly shape the way we parent.

When we begin to notice the cycle - overwhelm, reaction, guilt, repeat - we open the door to something steadier.

Toddlerhood doesn’t need a perfect parent.
It needs a present one.

If you’ve ever felt caught between being too soft and too strict… between patience and frustration… this conversation will help you pause, reflect, and begin again.

Because lasting change in our children often begins within us. ❤️

Your Toddler’s Brain Is Built at Night (Most Parents Miss This) Ep 149 31 Mar 202601:05:33

What if the most powerful thing you could do for your toddler's development happened while they were asleep?

In this episode, licensed pediatric speech-language pathologist Erin Hyer breaks down the neuroscience of sleep in early childhood — and why it is the most underestimated factor in your child's brain development, language acquisition, and emotional health.

Drawing on Dr. Matthew Walker's landmark research and nearly 40 years of clinical practice, Erin explains what is actually happening in your toddler's brain overnight, why the science community is only now catching up to what clinicians have observed for decades, and what you can do — starting tonight — to protect it.

Note: everything in this episode applies to adults too. Dr. Walker's work is a lifetime argument for sleep. Erin just happens to believe the earliest years are where it matters most.

You'll hear: the glymphatic system explained in plain language · why toddlers wake more — and why that is normal · the 3 words that change bedtime entirely · 10 simple steps organized into three groups · and a story involving a 6'6" ex-Navy husband that every parent will recognize.

5 Well-Meaning Habits That Delay Speech - And the Simple Fix (Part 2) Ep 14824 Mar 202600:45:29

Last week I introduced the first two habits quietly getting in the way of your toddler's speech.

This week we go deeper.

In Part 2 I'm sharing Habits 3, 4, and 5 - and these are the ones that tend to stop parents cold. Not because they're complicated. But because nobody told them these things mattered.

We start with the neuroscience - and I mean real neuroscience, the kind that completely changes how you see your child's developing brain.

Your baby arrived in this world already wired for language. Not for any specific language. For all of them.

Once you understand that, everything else in this episode lands differently.

Then we talk about the pacifier. Who it's really for. And why the transition is almost always harder for the parent than the child.

And finally - screens. After 40 years in this field, I have a clear position. I'll share it plainly, without apology, and with the clinical evidence to back it up.

In this episode:

  • The neuroscience of the developing brain — and why flashcards at 18 months are knocking on the wrong door
  • Citizens of the world — what this term means and why it changes everything
  • The pacifier question nobody asks honestly
  • What I really think about screens — and what I told families back in the early nineties that still works today
  • The thread connecting all five habits — and what Marcus taught me about what children actually need

Missed Part 1? Start with Episode 147 first — it'll make this one land much deeper.

5 Well-Meaning Habits That Delay Speech - And the Simple Fix (Part 1) Ep 14717 Mar 202600:29:58

If you've ever watched your toddler at a playground - wanting to join in, but not quite knowing how - this episode is for you.

After nearly 40 years as a speech-language pathologist, I've worked with hundreds of families whose children were bright, loved, and well cared for - and still not talking the way they should be.

In most cases, it wasn't a diagnosis that was getting in the way.

It was a handful of everyday habits. Common ones. Well-meaning ones. The kind that develop naturally in busy, loving homes - and quietly remove a child's felt need to reach toward language.

In Part 1 of this two-part episode, I walk you through the first two habits - including one that will surprise almost every parent who hears it.

This episode is not about blame. It's about clarity.

Because once you see these patterns, you can't unsee them. And the moment you start making small shifts - something opens up.

In this episode:

  • Why being too helpful can silence your toddler's speech
  • Why 200 words is not the finish line - and what happens when parents think it is
  • The snack table story that still stops me cold

Part 2 drops next week - or join my email list for early access. Link below.

What Our Kids Lose When We Stop Eating Together - And How to Get It Back Ep 14610 Mar 202600:45:49

What if one of the most powerful things you can do for your child's brain, language, and emotional development isn't a program, a therapy, or a curriculum — it's dinner?

In this foundational episode, speech-language pathologist and child development expert Erin Hyer, unpacks the science behind what we lose when family mealtime disappears — and what our children's behavior, attention, and language are quietly telling us about it.

After 40 years working with young children, Erin connects dots that most parents have never had connected for them: nutrition, regulation, shared attention, and language are not separate systems. They are one system. And the family table sits at the center of all of it.

This episode is part of an ongoing series on using your home environment intentionally to support healthy development in children 0–3.

You'll hear: why blood sugar crashes look like behavior problems, what shared attention actually is and why mealtime creates it naturally, the story of a child who couldn't bear to sit at the family table — and what changed when her brain finally could, and one simple shift you can make tonight.

This is not about perfect meals. It's about intentional ones.

The Most Overlooked Disruptor in Your Child’s Development (It’s in Almost Every Home) Ep 145 03 Mar 202601:08:47

There's something running in the background of most homes with young children right now. Not something dramatic. Not something you'd even think to question.

The TV. Just on. Nobody watching. Life happening around it.

And after nearly four decades of clinical work with children and families — I can tell you that this one thing is quietly doing more damage to early development than most parents have ever been told.

In this episode I walk you through five things the research tells us about background TV — and every single finding is specifically about ambient noise, not a child sitting and watching a screen.

What you'll hear in this episode:

The word gap — how background TV drops the words your child hears by nearly 70% per hour, and why that matters more than you think.

Why it's not just quantity of language that drops — but quality. And what that means for your child's developing brain.

What deep play actually looks like in a nine-month-old — and why background noise is quietly stealing it from your child without you ever noticing.

The executive function connection — including what the research says about background TV, sleep, and the rising rates of ADHD in young children.

Sensory processing — the history of how we got here, why "sensory kids" were never meant to be this common, and what I believe we owe these children.

Plus — what about music? I answer the question I get asked most often, and give you real conditions for when it helps and when it doesn't.

This is the episode I've wanted to record for years. I hope it changes how you hear your home.

Are We Making Toddlerhood Too Complicated? Ep 144 24 Feb 202600:25:56

Parents have never had more information about early childhood than they do today.

We track sleep, research milestones, optimize toys, and fill our days with activities meant to help our toddlers thrive.

And yet - many parents quietly wonder why their child still feels overwhelmed, dysregulated, or unsettled.

In this episode, I explore a difficult but hopeful question:

Have we made toddlerhood too complicated?

Drawing from nearly four decades of clinical experience, I unpack how environment shapes a developing nervous system — and why connection, rhythm, and presence matter more than programs or products.

We’ll look at:
 • The rising normalization of dysregulation
 • How overstimulation impacts language and behavior
 • Why waiting and presence are biologically powerful
 • What to begin noticing before changing anything

This episode is not about doing more.

It’s about noticing more.

If you’ve been wondering whether something in your home rhythm feels “off,” this conversation will help you see more clearly — and more calmly.

Why Some Kids Cooperate - And Others Struggle Ep 14317 Feb 202600:40:28

Are calm, cooperative kids just born that way?

Recently, there’s been growing conversation around Japanese parenting - how children there seem more respectful, more self-disciplined, and more socially aware.

But is it cultural magic?

Or is it development?

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, we walk through seven parenting principles often associated with Japanese culture - and translate them through the lens of brain development, attachment research, language growth, and nervous system regulation.

You’ll learn:

• Why attachment must come before independence
 • Why modeling works better than lecturing for toddlers
 • How belonging inside the family builds cooperation
 • Why daily responsibilities wire competence (and language!)
 • How natural consequences teach cause and effect
 • Why steady boundaries reduce power struggles
 • And how emotional regulation becomes internalized over time

This isn’t about copying another culture.

It’s about understanding the developmental sequence that builds self-discipline.

Security → Modeling → Belonging → Responsibility → Cause & Effect → Steady Boundaries → Internal Regulation

That’s not a list.

That’s how the toddler brain grows.

If you’ve ever wondered:
 “Why isn’t my toddler listening?”
“Am I too strict… or too gentle?”
 “Where do I even start?”

This episode will help you step back and see the bigger picture.

Because toddlers don’t need more strategies.

They need more regulated adults.

When Your Gut Keeps Whispering “Pay Attention” Ep 14210 Feb 202600:54:26

Sometimes it’s not a loud concern.
It’s not panic.
It’s just a quiet feeling you can’t shake.

A whisper that says: pay attention.

If your baby or toddler isn’t talking the way you expected — and you’ve been told not to worry, to relax, or that they’ll “catch up” — this episode is for you.

Not to scare you.
Not to rush you.
And not to tell you that something is “wrong.”

But to help you understand why that inner nudge matters — and how early communication actually develops in the first three years of life.

In this episode, I explain:

  • Why loving, attentive parents can still feel unsure

  • Why more talking, more questions, or more pressure isn’t always the answer

  • What brain development really requires before words can flourish

  • How to support communication in a way that feels nurturing, preventative, and purposeful — not performative or stressful

You are wired to notice your child.

You are wired to protect and steward their growth.

And paying attention early is not overreacting — it’s how we create the conditions for connection to blossom.

Why Your Toddler Isn’t Listening Yet (And What Actually Builds It) Ep 14103 Feb 202600:57:02

If you’ve ever wondered “Why won’t my toddler listen?” — this episode is for you.

Many parents assume listening is a behavior problem.

But developmentally, listening is a brain skill — one that takes time, guidance, and the right conditions to grow.

In this episode, Erin Hyer — a speech-language pathologist with over 35 years of early intervention and real-life experience — explains why toddlers often can’t listen yet, even when they seem capable in other ways. And why yelling, repeating, or getting firmer usually backfires.

You’ll learn:

  • Why listening is not the same as obedience
  • How regulation, receptive language, and shared attention all affect listening
  • Why cooperation comes before talking — not the other way around
  • What parents often miss when toddlers appear “defiant”
  • How everyday moments (not techniques) build listening skills over time

Erin also walks through practical, brain-based strategies that support listening and understanding, including:

  • Turn-taking and shared engagement
  • Including toddlers in everyday chores
  • Explaining the “why” to build comprehension
  • Using simple choices to reduce overwhelm and increase cooperation

This episode isn’t about quick fixes or lowering expectations.

It’s about understanding what your toddler’s brain is capable of right now — and how to guide them toward what comes next.

Because listening is built.

Understanding comes first.

And parenting was never meant to be done alone.

Why Some Toddlers Struggle to Talk (And What Actually Helps) Ep 140 27 Jan 202600:56:03

If your toddler isn’t talking much yet, you may feel pressure to do more -
talk more, label more, teach more.

But after 35 years in early intervention, I’ve learned something important:
speech doesn’t grow from more words.

It grows from slow moments, shared attention, movement, and being included in everyday life.

In this episode, I walk you through 5 common patterns I see over and over again when language is slow to emerge - not to create fear or blame, but to help you see what’s been hiding in plain sight.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why passive input doesn’t replace real interaction
  • The difference between parentese and silly baby talk
  • How over-reliance on “helpful” tools can quietly limit development
  • Why understanding matters more than words at first
  • And why waiting too long can change a child’s developmental trajectory

This conversation isn’t about perfection.

It’s about awareness, timing, and making small, meaningful shifts while the brain is still wide open to change.

You’re not just filling time - you’re shaping a brain, body, and nervous system every day.

You’re Not Behind (Yet) — This Matters More Than Words Ep 13920 Jan 202600:26:33

If your toddler isn’t talking much yet, this episode is for you.

Many parents worry about words — how many, how clear, how often. But long before speech shows up reliably, something else is being built underneath.

In this episode, Erin Hyer — speech-language pathologist with over 35 years of experience — explains what actually matters before words take off, and why so many well-intentioned parents miss it in today’s busy, overstimulating world.

You’ll learn:

  • Why talking and understanding develop together — but don’t always show up evenly
  • What’s really happening in your child’s brain when language feels “slow”
  • How listening, regulation, rhythm, and play create the conditions speech grows out of
  • Why modern life quietly works against development — and what parents can do upstream
  • How to support strong foundations without pressure, panic, or labels

This episode isn’t about diagnosing your child.

It’s about helping you see what matters first — so you don’t wait too long, and you don’t worry too soon.

If you’re ready to move beyond milestones and into meaningful support, you’re in the right place.

Why Asking “What’s This?” Often Backfires With Late Talkers Ep 13813 Jan 202600:38:39

If your toddler isn’t talking much yet, you may have found yourself asking, “What’s this?” — hoping to hear a word.

But for many late talkers, that well-intentioned question quietly shuts things down.

In this episode, Erin Hyer — speech-language pathologist with over 35 years of clinical and real-life experience — explains why asking for words too early can work against development, and what actually helps toddlers feel ready to communicate.

You’ll learn:

  • Why silence doesn’t mean your child won’t talk — just that the foundations are still forming
  • The difference between 'testing' and participating in early communication
  • The five key areas that support speech before words appear
  • How attention, imitation, play, daily rhythms, and nervous system regulation all shape language development

This episode isn’t about doing more or pushing harder.

It’s about creating the conditions that make communication feel safe, comfortable, interesting, and worth the effort.

🎧 You’ll also hear a simple metaphor that reframes speech development — and reminds parents why patience, presence, and trust matter more than pressure.

Why Parenting Feels Harder Than You Thought (And What Actually Helps) Ep 137 06 Jan 202600:25:32

Many parents enter early parenthood expecting exhaustion — but not the constant feeling of being on edge, unsure, or reactive, even when they’re trying their best.

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, we take a step back from tips and tactics and look at what often gets missed in conversations about parenting young children: where we place our effort matters just as much as how much effort we give.

Through real-life stories and a prevention-first lens, Erin explores how everyday rhythms — including sleep, food, play, movement, and pace — quietly shape a child’s behavior, attention, learning, and emotional regulation.

Rather than encouraging parents to do more, this conversation focuses on becoming more intentional — starting in the places that support a child’s nervous system and create steadiness for the whole family.

If parenting feels harder than you expected, this episode is designed to help you understand why — and to offer a calmer, clearer starting place.

What Actually Matters in the First 3 Years (35 Years of Perspective) Ep 13630 Dec 202501:00:07

After more than 35 years of sitting on floors with babies and toddlers - and walking alongside thousands of mothers - I’ve learned something that still surprises people.

The children who thrive in the first three years aren’t raised by parents who do everything “right.”

They’re raised by adults who stay in sync — who notice, respond, and adjust in real time.

In this final episode of the year, I’m not offering a checklist or another set of milestones to track.

I’m sharing three anchors that have held steady across decades of real families and real development — long before social media, parenting trends, or performance pressure entered the picture.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why attunement and rhythm matter more than rigid schedules

  • How language grows best inside real life, not through testing or pressure

  • Why the brain grows through the body, and how movement and sensory integration shape regulation, attention, and speech

  • What stress, cortisol, and nervous-system overload actually look like in babies and toddlers

  • Why looking away can help a child listen better - and what we’ve misunderstood for years

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by noise, advice, or expectations - this episode is an invitation to slow down, zoom out, and reconnect with what truly supports your child’s growth.

You’re not behind.
You’re just surrounded by noise.

If Christmas Feels Like Too Much, You’re Not Doing It Wrong Ep 13523 Dec 202500:29:37

If Christmas feels overwhelming - for you or your toddler - you’re not imagining it.

And you’re not doing anything wrong.

For babies and toddlers, the holiday season brings more noise, more stimulation, more people, more stuff, and disrupted routines - often all at once. Little nervous systems aren’t built to manage that kind of overload, even when everything looks joyful from the outside.

In this episode, I explain why Christmas can feel like “too much” for young children, and how understanding early brain development can help you release guilt, lower expectations, and protect what matters most.

We’ll talk about how toddlers actually process experiences, what they truly remember, and why simplicity and rhythm are not only enough - they’re protective.

You’ll also hear real-life stories from my clinical work and motherhood, along with gentle permission to keep Christmas simple for your little ones while still enjoying meaningful connection as a family.

This episode isn’t about doing more.

It’s about understanding what your child needs — and giving yourself permission to rest there.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why Christmas can overwhelm babies and toddlers
  • How young children’s brains process stimulation and memory
  • What toddlers actually remember from holidays (and what they don’t)
  • Why fewer toys and simpler routines support regulation
  • How to prevent post-holiday dysregulation and sleep disruption
  • Permission to give your child a touch of Christmas - without the layers and pressure

I’ve Seen Hundreds of “Late Talkers.” Here’s What All Parents Miss. Ep 13309 Dec 202500:44:03

If you want your child to talk well — not just say more words — this episode will change the way you think about early communication.

Because here’s the truth:
Talking doesn’t just “show up” one day.

It grows from the daily experiences underneath it — connection, play, movement, interaction, modeling, as well as sleep, nutrition, and healthy routines.

Whether your baby is 6 months old and you want to stay ahead…
or your toddler is already showing signs of delay…
understanding what’s happening underneath the words is one of the best gifts you can give your child.

You’ve probably heard the common lines:
 “Boys talk later.”
 “Late talking runs in families.”
“Give it time. She’ll talk when she’s ready.”

But in 2025, it’s much more nuanced than that — and simply assuming “it’ll all work out” can keep kids stuck longer than they need to be.

After 35 years in early intervention, Erin has seen hundreds of so-called “late talkers,” and here’s what most parents (and many professionals) miss:

👉 Not all late talkers are the same.

Some children are on a simple language-delay path.
Others are showing early signs of a broader 'communication' difference.
Those two paths need different kinds of support.

In this episode, Erin helps you “look more closely” and get curious, as she explains in clear, practical terms:

  • what to notice before the first birthday
  • the difference between a language delay and a communication disorder
  • why focusing only on “more words” can miss the real issue
  • how play, sensory needs, emotions, and movement all shape speech
  • subtle signs parents overlook in the toddler years
  • questions to ask instead of just “waiting and seeing”
  • what you can start doing today to support your child, at any age

If you’re a parent who doesn’t want to rely on assumptions or old myths, this conversation will give you the clarity and confidence to ask better questions, seek the right kind of help, and support your child’s development from the very beginning.

I’ve Helped Toddlers Talk for 35 Years. If You Want Your Baby to Talk Well, Watch This. Ep 13202 Dec 202500:44:35

If you want your baby or toddler to talk well — not just say more words — this episode is your starting point.

Because IMITATION is the skill that comes before gestures, babbling, understanding, and eventually… real talking.

Most parents overlook imitation.
Many professionals gloss over it.
But after 35 years helping babies and toddlers communicate, I can tell you this with absolute certainty:

Toddlers learn to imitate long before they learn to talk — and imitation is one of the strongest predictors of early speech.

In today’s episode, I’m walking you through the real building blocks beneath talking and how imitation shapes attention, connection, and communication.

You’ll learn:

• what imitation actually is (it’s not just copying words!)
• the layers of imitation your child moves through
• the connection between imitation, gestures, and early language
• the simple mistake many parents make without even realizing it • playful, natural ways to spark imitation at home — starting today

Whether your little one is 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, or closer to 2, this episode will help you see communication in a whole new way — long before the words appear.

This ALWAYS Happens Before Babies Say Their First Word (Every Parent Misses This One) Ep 13125 Nov 202500:49:36

The Hidden Step Before First Words (Every Parent Misses This One)

If your toddler isn’t using many words yet, this episode will change the way you see early communication.

Most parents—and honestly, many professionals—focus on the number of words. But talking doesn’t begin with words. It begins with the body, with connection, and with one crucial developmental step that predicts everything that comes next.

In today’s episode, Erin pulls back the curtain on the hidden foundations of communication—what really happens before first words—and why this matters for every child from 6 months to 2½ years and beyond.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
 • the overlooked skill that shows up months before talking
 • why gestures are symbolic communication (just like words!)
 • how noisy babies, motor movement, and early imitation shape language
 • surprising predictors of later vocabulary growth
 • what the CDC’s “30-month” update got dangerously wrong
 • how parents can spot healthy communication patterns early on
 • simple ways to support your baby or toddler today

Whether you have a baby just finding their voice, a toddler who’s slow to talk, or you’re simply a parent who wants to understand your child’s development with confidence—this episode will give you clarity, direction, and peace of mind.

Because talking isn’t a milestone…
 it’s a process.

And once you see the path, you’ll never look at communication the same way again.

They Got It WRONG: The Hidden Link Between Eating and Speech Development Ep 126 21 Oct 202500:45:38

Everyone talks about “speech milestones,” but few realize that clear talking starts long before the first word. It begins with sucking, swallowing, mouthing, and chewing real food.

In this episode, Erin Hyer — pediatric speech-language pathologist and host of Talking Toddlers — unpacks how modern feeding habits are quietly undermining children’s oral-motor development and what parents can do to course-correct with confidence.

You’ll discover:

  • Why mouthing and chewing are essential brain-building workouts

  • How pouches, purees, and processed foods keep kids stuck in baby patterns

  • The simple, God-designed rhythm that connects eating, breathing, and talking

  • Practical ways to strengthen your child’s jaw, tongue, and attention every day

Because when we understand how kids learn to eat and talk, we can help them thrive — one bite, one word, one day at a time.

STOP Talking When Your Toddler Melts Down: Do This Instead Ep 12514 Oct 202500:39:21

You’re in the grocery store. Your toddler is whining, tugging, then screaming, and finally — full-body flop in the aisle. People are watching. Your chest tightens. You start explaining, reasoning, pleading… and it just gets worse.

Why?

Reading Starts at Birth: 10 Foundations Only Parents Can Give Ep 12223 Sep 202501:07:06

Most parents think reading starts with letters and phonics. But the truth is — literacy is a man-made skill, layered on top of speech and language.

If your child doesn’t get the right foundations at home, they may struggle later, even in the best schools.

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin Hyer — speech-language pathologist with 35+ years of experience — reveals the 10 foundational skills every baby, toddler, and preschooler needs before school.

These aren’t worksheets or apps. They’re simple, daily habits that only parents and caregivers can provide through connection, play, and conversation.

👉 You’ll learn:

  • Why auditory processing is the hidden key to reading

  • Why daycare and preschool can’t replace 1:1, real-time interactions

  • How board games, pretend play, and family meals SECRETLY prepare your child for literacy

  • The daily book-reading habit that helped Erin’s daughter “crack the code” at 3½

  • Why handwriting (yes, even cursive!) can shape confidence into adulthood

Download the free 10 Skills Checklist and put it on your fridge. Because prevention beats remediation every time.
