| Interview with HeyJulien, Football RPF and Carraville writer | 09 Jul 2024 | 03:49:30 | |
Summary:
Like a bicycle kick goal at minute 95, Sara finally completes editing on a much overdue interview with fellow Carraville author HeyJulien ! Sara and Julien talk about the world of football RPF (as in soccer, for all you Yankees); specifically the delightfully odd-couple rivals-to-lovers ship of English football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. Other talking points scattered across the pitch include: football as war, derby days and football rivalry; the joys of local non-league football, the Bundesliga and fußballkultur; to switch POV, or not to switch POV; the annoying beauty of David Beckham; and of course, we discuss the tragically under-utilized in fic friendship of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville (or, Scholesy as the Kermit to Gary Neville’s Miss Piggy). Join us, if you like! Correction - at 03:27:40 we incorrectly refer to our wonderful fellow Carraville author as ‘player1604’-- their handle is player1064, which is a reference to Gary Neville’s England legacy number. Gary was the 1,064th player to play for England’s National Team. Contact and Credits:

| Interview with provocative_envy aka Andrea Anderson PART DEUX | 21 May 2021 | 01:13:52 | |
PART TWO!! Sara and Andrea continue their discussion, this time with the aid of White Claw and more beer. Topics include: motherhood and writing, the challenges of being a short-form/flash fiction writer in a novelist’s world, finding motivation for wanting to do the “professional writing thing”, and the “silliness of the sequel.” We talk more about “Light as a Feather”, how ‘Kentucky South’ is a little different than the rest of the South (a very specific preoccupation with corrected Sonic slushies), AND Biscuit lets us know that the FedEx man is here! Also, Sara gets pretty tipsy trying to read her “Rapid Fire” questions, and we giggle over ugly “SAD” ultraviolet mood-lifting lights. Where do you put them?? DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!: “RARE PAIR SUMMER SLAM 2k21: LIKE A VIRGIN” starts May 29th!!

| Interview with provocative_envy aka Andrea Anderson PART ONE | 17 May 2021 | 01:23:30 | |
IT'S A TWO-FER! Sara sits down with professional author Andrea Anderson, who also writes fanfiction under the pen name provocative_envy. In Part One, Andrea talks about early writing (total and complete creative freedom! Wearing black! Missing the subtext in Sylvia Plath!), her work in fanfiction digging into the least explored characters in the Harry Potter universe, and how that bridged her into writing her own original fiction. We discuss her published novel, “Light as a Feather” which you can purchase here (I did, it’s the perfect summer read!) And dig into the nitty gritty of outlining, structure, pacing, and how to “write like you’re going somewhere.” We also compare chubby indoor cats with poor jumping skills, to “unambitious Slytherins.” Also we may have had a drink or two. DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!: “RARE PAIR SUMMER SLAM 2k21: LIKE A VIRGIN” starts May 29th!! (Want to see Pavarti “Sephora checkout girl” Patil and OrganizedCrimeLord!Tom Riddle get together?? | Interview with RivkaT | 04 Apr 2021 | 01:38:34
Talkin’ Fanfic Episode No. - 203 Episode Title - Interview with RivkaT RivkaT has written 53 stories in the Smallville fandom, and many, many stories in other fandoms such as Supernatural, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fringe. Sara notes that nearly every time she sits down to read a RivkaT story, she learns something-- new vocabulary, a joke she hadn’t picked up on the first time, a new way of looking through a character’s eyes-- her writing is immersive, intelligent, incredibly thoughtful-- and fun! And even when utilizing overtly silly or overused tropes and clichés, nothing is cheaply handled. She is one of the best of the very best, not just in the Smallville fandom, but in the pantheon of authors held in highest regard. Sara was honored to sit down with her and talk about her work, including Sara’s favorite, “Useful Arts.”

| Interview with Smallville fic author XParrot !! | 22 Mar 2021 | 02:16:02 | |
Sara sits down with XParrot, whose writing in the Smallville fandom she finds inspiring and incandescent! They talk about getting into the fascinating and flawed mind of Lex Luthor, and his philosophical preoccupation with the unsolvable problem of an imperfect being wielding unimaginable power; they dip into the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom to look at another troubled genius, Seto Kaiba; they discuss dramatic irony, and how canon allows fanfiction authors to anchor a story to certain points, and from there climb to heights unreachable by typical and traditional methods of fiction writing; aaaaand also what Michael Rosenbaum’s famous ad-lib “I love you like a brother” really should mean in the context of a CW show. Also we mention The CoCK. Heh. Episode References

| “Who Is Like God?” by A_LazyPanda (BONUS Batfam/Superman chat at the end) | 11 Dec 2020 | 01:55:59 | |
This week Sara and Laura discuss “Who Is Like God?” a work in progress (WIP) written by A_LazyPanda (some of you may know her as Gia467). Centering on the character of Miguel, this work is a type of hero’s journey story that straddles the metaphysical line between the Valley as we know it, and something far more mysterious, magical, dark, and dangerous. It’s a story about the gray areas-- between right and wrong, between the ‘real’ and the fantastic, and between free will and fate. The story is also enhanced with a carefully chosen soundtrack (see Youtube playlist below) and some truly lovely fanart. Perfect for readers looking for a refreshing departure from typical fanfiction plots and tropes and the typical romance-centered story, dive into this WIP now and be ready for the conclusion! READ the full interview and show notes HERE on AO3 (ALSO: Laura and Sara end the episode at 1h14m ; from there till the end they talk recent engagement with the DC Comics Batman and Superman fandoms. | Interview - LibertinePast | 27 Sep 2020 | 02:37:29
Sara interviews LibertinePast, author of “Foreigner”, “The Backyard Series”, “Misgivings”, and SO MANY others! As one of the OG writers in the quiver, she has contributed so much to the LawRusso community, and also was one of the first to write “Amoush”, the Amanda/Anoush pairing. Her writing is chock-a-block with pop-culture, tongue-in-cheek references, and humor-- but is always infused with heartache and melancholy, resulting in a powerful blended tone and style that is always entertaining, nostalgic, and emotive. She is also a delightful, positive, and uncynical presence on Tumblr, so give her a follow to brighten your dashboard. IN MEMORY OF ROB GARRISON: Today, 9/27/20, marks one year since Rob Garrison’s passing. Let’s remember Rob this week, and think about all that he gave us fans with his performance as Tommy both in The Karate Kid, and Season 2 of Cobra Kai. Remember that ‘Cobra Kai Never Dies’ and Rob will live on with the legacy of his performance as Tommy in the hearts of us fans. RIP.

| Talkin’ Music with shineswithyou | 11 Apr 2023 | 02:08:16 | |
Summary: Sara takes (kind of sort of) a break from talking fanfic and bandfic to talk about a different form of storytelling– music, and writing about music! shineswithyou is a familiar face around Oasis and U2 tumblr, but what you might NOT know is that she has recently embarked on a writing journey of her own, with a substack blog about music and its place as the soundtrack of her own life. Sara and shines talk about her blog, and the difficulty of “writing words about sounds”; how music is a language in and of itself capable of telling its own (and our own) stories. Of COURSE we loop it back around to fanfiction and RPF (or, ‘real person fanfiction’), and how bandfic is, at its core, a pure form of love for the musical artist. Other talking points include: how awesome Bono is, and how we wish we could have been at Slane Castle in 2001; the perennial dysfunction of the Gallagher brothers; and the dichotomy of the U2 and Oasis fandoms. Switch842 is one of the best and most prolific vidders (a creator of fanvids) in the Cobra Kai fandom, and is also a familiar presence in the Cobra Kai Kompanion community. Kerri has written several one-shot and short pieces of fanfiction centering on the friendship and relationship between Daniel and Johnny, which are discussed in this episode. The gals also talk extensively about her vidding experience, and dig into how she chooses to tell a visual story vs. a visual showcase, or in many cases a little bit of both. Other topics-- Johnny's potential as a priest! (Answer-- yes please). Michael "Rosey" Rosenbaum's podcast "Inside of You", the absurdity of Smallville plots and character ages-- and "is Supernatural really still on??"

Sara welcomes veteran writer suecsit to the show to discuss her 2018 work, "The Bert Series," serialized into 14 individual stories, and one of the first ever in the Cobra Kai fandom to fully explore the 'LawRusso' pairing. The series is incredibly well written, vivid in both voice and dialogue, the prose is lovely, and delves into the themes of choice, control, and connection. It's a truly beautiful work. Sara and suecsit also discuss the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on her writing; suecsit's recent love affair with the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Queen, and other music of the 1970s; and her recent work featuring the characters of Demetri and Eli/Hawk.

| Interview with Jeevey | 24 Oct 2022 | 03:04:48 | |
Summary: Sara sits down with the amazing, sublime, talented Jeevey, a legend in the Oasis RPF and Gcest world. Jeevey talks about the challenges of finding time to express yourself amid real life responsibilities; telling the truth through amateur writing; the joys of RPF and her start in the U2 fandom; rejecting the shame of writing taboo topics, and why she likes writing about interesting, compelling characters versus ‘unproblematic’ more acceptable figures (BORING!) Jeevey is also a fandom expert on Noel Gallagher’s pre-Oasis career as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, and his friendship (ahem) relationship, with the now legendary Mancunian Clint Boon. Jeevey chronicles a Clint/Noel romance in her beautiful ongoing work, “Transistor”.
We also mention Jeevey’s recent trip to the UK to see both Gallagher brothers in concert; a highlight of which was Jeevey’s front row view of High Flying Birds’ guitarist Gem Archer’s rather, er, overwhelming and impressive physical presents. PRESENCE, I mean!

| Interview with phyn, aka RedHead | 05 Jul 2022 | 03:15:42 | |
Talkin’ Fanfic Episode No. - 302 Episode Title - Interview with phyn, aka RedHead
Summary: Yet another incredible treat for the ColdFlash fans! On this episode of Talkin’ Fanfic, Sara sits down with phynali, better known in ColdFlash circles as (the one, the only!) RedHead. RedHead has authored two of the top five kudos’d works under the ColdFlash tag on Ao3, and their work is commonly counted as some of the most seminal in the fandom. Sara and phyn dig into three of RedHead’s works: “Tumbling Together”, “An All Too Jagged Snowflake”, and “Got A Melancholic Temperament (that’s what they said to me)”. Sara and phyn talk about the joys and collaborative nature of the ColdFlash community, (“Hi, Aunt Crimson!”), the challenge of balancing a PhD thesis with fanfiction obligations, how juggling multiple (and very different) stories can actually help overcome writer’s block, and also touch on phyn’s work under the pseud “dyed_red”, where they publish Supernatural works of a very different (darker, stylistic, minimalistic) nature and atmosphere, and the challenge therein of dipping a toe into a new fandom.

| Interview with Crimson1 aka professional author Amanda Meuwissen | 23 May 2022 | 03:05:39 | |
Talkin’ Fanfic Episode No. - 301 Episode Title - Interview with Crimson1, professional author Amanda Meuwissen In Talkin’ Fanfic’s third season opener, Sara sits down with professionally published author Amanda Meuwissen, who has openly and proudly published fanfiction on both ff.net and Ao3 for decades, as Crimson1 ! Sara and Amanda discuss how Amanda’s introduction to popular fiction (via, ironically, Anne Rice novels) almost immediately funneled her into the world of fanfiction reading and writing, and how a Dean/OMC fic she wrote during the early seasons of Supernatural quickly rocketed in popularity (it is still, staggeringly, the #7 most reviewed Supernatural of all time on fanfiction.net, out of some 121 thousand) and served as the first project she would “flip” into a published original work. Sara and Amanda talk about two of her ColdFlash fics from the CW’s Flash fandom, her love of the characters of Barry Allen and Leonard Snart, and why in many ways, the ColdFlash fandom writes the characters better than the show itself. They also express a random common love for a Wellingbaum RPF coffee shop AU, Wentworth Miller’s hands, the surprising awesomeness of “Legends of Tomorrow” and Amanda gives listeners some tips and tricks on how best to break into publishing in the original fiction world!

| Choose Not to Warn, and “The Operative Word” by road_rhythm | 09 Apr 2022 | 01:52:01 | |
A literal throw-back! Recorded in February 2022, Sara didn't get around to editing and posting until September 2022. In this belated Season 2 closer, Sara and Laura discuss (after some updates on recent ColdFlash and Gallaghercest obsessions) a commonly forgotten or misunderstood Archive Warning: the "Choose Not to Warn" tag. They discuss the purpose of CNTW in context of and along with a phenomenally written story, "The Operative Word" by road_rhythm, in which Sam Winchester weighs the meaning of life, death, and the existence of Free Will itself. Do fanfiction authors have the option to choose their own endings? Do fanfiction readers have the resources to filter out what they do and do not want to read?? The option on all fronts is a resounding YES, and the Talkin' Fanfic gals break it all down, as well dig into the strong audience reaction elicited by road_rhythm's fearless work of near-metafiction. NOTE: Ironically in order to listen to this episode we are requiring you to first read "The Operative Word". You do not have a choice in this matter!! | Interview with elsi | 22 Mar 2022 | 02:21:06
Talkin’ Fanfic Episode No. - 209 Episode Title - Interview with elsi
Sara sits down to talk with elsi, aka Prince_of_Elsinore, an incredibly talented author who has spent many thousands of words exploring the heart of the relationship between the characters of Dean and Sam Winchester from Supernatural. Sara and elsi cover the show itself (that finale!) and discuss three of elsi’s works centered around Sam and Dean over the course of their lives together. elsi speaks in depth about the differences between gencest and Wincest, and the thin and not-so-thin lines that form the fascinating gradient between. elsi explains their love for this “ultimate ship” and why the heart of a good Wincest fic treats “problematic” aspects of the ship directly, in a way that feels honest, unafraid, and faithful to Sam and Dean themselves as characters. Other topics include: writing style, “Id fic”, letting subtext tell the story and do the heavy lifting, and how elsi’s experience in fanfiction has informed and differed from their professional, original writing experiences, and why fanfiction isn’t just “the minor leagues” of the publishing writing world, but an artistic pursuit entirely of its own.
