His Texas-based band, Pariah, was signed to Geffen Records where they joined the ranks of Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, White Zombie and the label’s other heavy hitters. Success seemed imminent, but never happened. Then tragedy struck. Guitarist Kyle Ellison walks us through subsequent (and cathartic) stints with the Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets, Roky Erickson, Ministry and his recent collaboration with actress Renee Zellweger. He also tells us how he and his brother, Sims, landed in a Madonna video and that time our own Jason McMaster shared a mic with Axl Rose.

Jeff Duncan

Best-known for his guitar playing with heavy metal heroes, Armored Saint, Jeff Duncan previously played in the popular 1980s Hollywood band Odin (who is memorably immortalized in the “Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years”). A child of the Sunset Strip, Duncan saw Poison, Ratt, Motley Crue and WASP play to near-empty rooms before they found fame. Today, he continues working with Armored Saint, DC4 and releasing instrumental albums under his own name.

Smitten by KISS, he was playing Pittsburgh bars at age 16 before discovering the Faces and the Rolling Stones. With Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards as inspiration, he formed the pub-rocking, Motown-flavored Borstal Boys and further entrenched himself in his beloved Pittsburgh music scene. John Perez

Wayne Nagel

An architect of the Austin music scene for more than four decades, Wayne Nagel was

the co-owner of the legendary Austin Rehearsal Complex (ARC) where musicians

like Charlie Sexton, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Ely and countless others

roamed the halls and fine-tuned their songs. He also co-founded the

long-running SIMS Foundation to help musicians struggling with mental health

and works as tour manager for Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Ray Wylie

Hubbard, Eric Johnson and others. He’s done and seen it all -- and is one of

the reasons Austin is known for its rich musical history.

Jimmy Ashhurst

Best-known for his eight-year stint as the bass player for

double-platinum rockers Buckcherry, Jimmy Ashhurst previously played in Broken

Homes and Izzy Stradlin’s post-GN’R band, the Ju Ju Hounds. He’s also jammed

with Finnish cult rockers, Smack, was roommates with the Damned drummer Rat

Scabies and was once held at gunpoint with his pal, Stiv Bators. Yeah, it’s

safe to say there’s never a dull moment with this rock-n-roll lifer.

Harald Oimoen

His photographs captured the early years of the Bay Area thrash scene and

were featured on landmark albums by Metallica, Slayer, Exodus and Possessed.

Along with co-photographer Brian Lew, he compiled his images into the

definitive Bay Area thrash metal photo book, “Murder in the Front Row,” which

was turned into a movie in 2019. Known by his nickname, “Harald O,” he’s also

an accomplished bass player who spent nearly 20 years in D.R.I. Enjoy the

brutally honest, funny and firsthand stories of Harald Oimoen.
