Understanding Sales Email Strategy with Kyla Roma08 Nov 202200:46:35

Email is emotional. Liz Wilcox said it in our episode on welcome sequences, and Kyla Roma is echoing it here today during our conversation on sales email strategy.

You get all the way through a huge part of the launch process only to realize

THERE.
IS.
STILL.
SO.
MUCH.
TO.
WRITE.

You're plowed through the pre-launch social media content, created a sales funnel and strategy, and wrote out an epic sales page that speaks directly to your clients' needs.

And now you have to write HOW MANY emails?

If feeling overwhelmed and overemotional about your sales emails is something you've experienced, this episode on being strategic with sales emails is one you won't want to miss.

Here's Exactly What Goes in a Welcome Series with Liz Wilcox25 Oct 202200:48:00

Yes! You're growing your email list. I hope you feel so proud of your efforts! 🎉

But now what?

Well, simple. You need a series of emails to introduce yourself to your new subscribers and set the groundwork about what they can expect from you. But, knowing what goes into a welcome email sequence and actually creating one are two completely different things.

I called in Liz Wilcox, the "Fresh Princess of Email" to chat about all things related to welcome email sequences. In this episode, she provides some concrete and clear suggestions on how to write (or edit) your welcome email sequence in a way that feels genuine, creates the opportunity to build relationships with your readers, and also convert them into potential customers.

This ended up being one of my most favorite interviews so far on the show, and I certainly think you're going to love it too.

How to Grow an Email List with Kate Doster19 Oct 202200:46:10

Wish you knew how to grow an email list for your business? If so, you're not alone. In preparation for this episode, I Googled "How do I grow an email list?" And do you know how many results there were for that search?

1,170,000,000. Yes, friends. That's over one billion results.

People know the value of email marketing. That's for sure. They just don't know exactly HOW to grow an email list.

Good news — you don't have to search any longer. I invited Kate Doster, host of the Inbox Besties podcast, onto the show to talk all about list building with me.

We'll cover how to grow an email list if you don't have one, how to kickstart a stagnant list or address your list if your business is completely changing, and what type of lead magnets will help you actually grow your list.

She believes you don’t need to bleed the alphabet or be a dirty rotten spam face to write emails that jolt subscribers into taking action, gobbling up your paid offers like candy… or kale if that’s their thing.

The Low Down on Marketing Quiz Creation with Jackie Aguglia07 Oct 202200:46:12

Quick: While you have the chance, join Interact's FREE Quiz Mastermind, happening from October 11-13!

Let me ask you a question for a moment. Have you ever taken a personality quiz? Do you remember the days of grabbing your monthly Cosmo subscription from the mailbox and scanning through to find out what type of "insert personality type" you were.

Or, maybe your last quiz wasn't that long ago. Maybe you find yourself scrolling through the popular Buzzfeed quizzes or taking the Myers Briggs or Enneagram to find out more about who you are and how you operate so you can step into your strengths and become aware of what might be considered weaknesses.

Enter quizzes for business: the marketing tool you (maybe) didn't know you needed.

Quiz creation is a great idea for almost any business. I've written quizzes for service providers and B2B SaaS companies. The quizzes can be silly and fun or serious and educational.

And, if interested in list building quizzes can be a lot easier way to get new leads on. your list than offering other lead magnets that may collect dust immediately in their inboxes.

Today, I'm excited to talk with Jackie Aguglia from TryInteract, one of the leading quiz creation companies...and the one I actually use in my business and recommend to my clients, all about quiz creation and how quizzes can fit into your marketing funnel.

Meet our guest expert:
I'm Jackie 👋 Quiz coach at interact and community manager of the quiz collective by interact. Interact's mission is to empower digital entrepreneurs, creators, and brands to grow their businesses through empathetic listening, deeper understanding, and true connection... at a human level.

In the “real world” you get to know your prospects personally; you can ask them questions and develop true empathy towards their needs and aspirations making it way easier to actually help them reach their goals.

An Interact quiz helps you do the same thing. And the connection, understanding, and personalized touch you create with your quiz will help you stand out in your industry – so you can attract more leads with less effort, increase your sales, and have a bigger impact.

Podcast Guesting and All the Copy That Comes With It with Angie Trueblood12 Sep 202200:46:37

How much copy do you think goes into visibility opportunities, such as podcast guesting?

Well, at first glance, it might not seem like a lot. If anything comes to mind, maybe you'd think of something like a professional bio that you'd send to the host.

But you need a lot more than a voice to get podcast guesting opportunities.

There's actually quite a bit of writing that goes into podcast guesting, like the actual podcast pitch, form completion, social media posts to share episodes, and more.

Oh, and don't forget about writing landing pages and lead magnets to help turn listeners into email subscribers, and finishing that project off with an email nurture sequence, too.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I'm chatting with Angie Trueblood, a dear friend and colleague, and founder of the Podwize Group about how to land podcast guesting opportunities with foundational research and solid copy.

Personally, Angie is passionate about normalizing the voices of women in leadership positions, which she feels privileged to play an active role in through her work. When she’s not knee-deep in the podcasting space for work, she can be found spending time with her family and friends in Richmond, VA, bingeing the Smartless podcast, and attempting to develop a love of bourbon (a relatively failed effort, at this point).

Set Your Own Website Rules with Teresa Schlup07 Sep 202200:46:00

If there's one thing that drives me bananas about the online business world...it's how people think there are "rules" they must follow in order to be successful.

Okay, so maybe you wouldn't call them rules, but if you're unsure of what I'm talking about here, I'll explain. It drives me bananas when experts proclaim that there is one true way to accomplish something. You know what I mean, stuff like:

  • "If you want to grow an audience, you must do XYZ"
  • "You need XYZ if you want your reel to go viral"
  • "This is exactly what you need for a 7-figure launch"

I mean, please.

We all know that my favorite phrase is "it depends" and I think there are so many marketing approaches and asset that will look different for every business.

Take your website, for example.

There are no rules you need to follow. Sure, there are best practices for both copy and design, but your business and your growth is what dictates the strategy for what best practices you should follow (and dare I say, which you shouldn't?!). I'm joined today with website designer, Teresa Schlup, to finish up this website series by  discussing how business owners can set their own rules for their websites and ways to be strategic while doing so.

Learn more about your guest expert:
Teresa Schlup is a WordPress and Squarespace web designer who helps her clients break the "rules of web design" by creating websites that are strategically designed to work as hard as they do.

She lives in South Dakota with her husband Todd, three pups – Marley, Toony & Presley, 2 cats – Frankie & Percy, and a flock of Ninja chickens.

How to Audit A Website (Think: Tech, Copy, Design + More!)02 Sep 202200:40:02

We all know the importance of having a website.  And if you didn't believe that before listening to my podcast, I sure as heck hope that I've drilled that in you by this point.

So, how do you know if the website that you have right now is working to your benefit?

Websites are not a set it and forget it type of thing.

And that's usually something I like to talk about with all of my done for you clients, before we even get started. Yes, you can do a massive amount of work to get a website foundation set, but as your business grows, adjusts, and as you get to know your own clients better, you're constantly going to be making small tweaks to get your offers out there in the world.

And this is exactly why website audits are so important.

In today's episode, I'll talk about everything that goes into a website audit, how you can DIY one, and why hiring a pro (like me!) to audit your site is the best investment you can make.

Brand Messaging and Repurposing Content with Emily Aborn20 Jul 202200:45:52

How many times have you sat down to create content quickly and instead spent endless hours adjusting the style, voice, personality, and vibe until the words actually sound like you? My guess is that you've been there and done that and spent a long time there...too long.

Creating content or repurposing content you already have shouldn't be that hard.

But staring at a blank page without your brand messaging nailed down means you're starting from scratch every single time you create any type of marketing asset. And that, my friends, is a ton of wasted time.

And business owners simply don't have time to waste time. Period.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I talk with Emily Aborn, a freelance content writer and host of the She Built This podcast. We dive into the importance of a brand messaging guide, how they help writers nail their clients' voices, and most importantly, how to create and repurpose content based on the messaging "rules" you create.

Guest Bio:

Emily Aborn is a Freelance Content Writer and Owner Founder of She Built This.

She gets ideas out of brains and onto the page by creating compelling content and copy that helps women entrepreneurs reach their dreams AND their dream clients.

She lives in New Hampshire with her husband, Jason, and their dog, Clyde. She's into hiking, reading books, all the word and nerdy brain games she can get her hands on, and of course... writing.

Learn more about your host:

Erin Ollila believes in the power of words and how a message can inform – and even transform – its intended audience. She graduated from Fairfield University with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and went on to co-found Spry,  an award-winning online literary journal.

When Erin's not helping her clients by writing strategic and SEO website copy, she’s encouraging them to spend time creating content if they don't have much or repurposing content that they already have.  And most importantly, she hopes this episode helps you understand how to do that in your own business.

What Goes In a Brand Messaging Guide for Your Business?18 Jul 202200:26:47

How do you know what to say to your clients? How do you know how to speak to leads on social media or what to write in your email newsletters?

Well, I don't want to oversimplify this for you. But I do have an easy answer.

The best way to feel confident in all of your marketing and messaging is by investing in a brand messaging guide that clearly lays out your mission, your vision, your values, your voice, your tone, how you speak to your audience, and the other key factors that go into all of your brand messaging.

With a brand messaging guide, you'll gain the confidence to know how to approach all of your marketing now and into the future. You'll also have a tool that helps any employees or contractors you work with nail your messaging so your brand is always consistent — and consistent brands make for trustworthy brands.

Curious about what actually goes in a brand messaging guide? Here's what this episode covers:

  • Why brand messaging guides are important for all businesses
  • Why brand messaging doesn't get the credit they truly deserve
  • What type of research needs to happen in order to prepare to create a brand messaging guide
  • How brand messaging guides influence all the other marketing strategies and assets you create
  • Who you can share your brand messaging guide with and why it helps them do their job better
  • The 10 most important elements all brand messaging guides need
  • What drives those 10 elements so you understand exactly what goes into each section (The meat of the episode happens right here!)
  • How brand messaging can help make you make business and marketing decisions

Turning Testimonials Into Case Study Marketing Content with Brittany Herzberg06 Jul 202200:39:28

Case study marketing offers an excellent return on investment. It's one way to show our clients our expertise, while also showcasing the breadth of work we can accomplish. Case studies are perfect for business owners who are modest (to a fault!) and don't love selling themselves as a personal brand or showcasing their expertise in other ways. Best yet — there are so many ways to approach case studies, which helps in this online marketing world where so many people are doing the same things over and over and over again.

Today, I'm talking with Brittany Herzberg, an SEO copywriter about how she approaches storified case study marketing. We both share a passion for strong SEO and solid testimonials, and I wanted showcase how two professionals who do the same thing for their clients (case studies!) approach the process similarly...and even more important, differently. If you're focusing on improving your customer experience or updating your systems to make clients feel more at ease, creating case studies should be the very next item on your to do list.

Here's exactly what we covered when we discussed turning testimonials into case study marketing assets:

  • How Brittany’s efforts to make friends as a child also served her well in the online business world
  • The importance of building out testimonials into bigger pieces of marketing content, specifically case studies
  • What a case study is and why business owners should invest in them.
  • Brittany’s approach to storified case studies
  • How case studies can show off your expertise without you having to boast and brag as a business owner
  • The trouble with writing your own case studies (and how to potentially overcome them)
  • The benefits of hiring an expert “outsider” to write the case studies for you. (Call us!)
  • How to determine what makes the best testimonials (and use them in your case study marketing
  • Whether or not sourcing information from your case studies can be templatizable
  • Where to use case studies on the website
  • Why case studies are good for client acquisition and also for SEO

Brittany Herzberg is who holistic health and wellness pros call when they want to show up as the answer to a Googled question and find clients that feel like friends. After building a thriving massage practice—she realized most of her clients chose to book because of her website. That combined with her 15+ years in the healthcare field has shown her that clients search for—& book with—providers they connect with.

She believes the first step to building a practice full of your dream clients—is to enlist the help of your website words. As an SEO copywriter, she knows how important it is to showcase your personality, highlight the client experience, & strategically use your clients' words. You can usually find her sitting on the floor—parked next to her dog, Jac—with an iced oat milk latte in-hand.

She graduated from Fairfield University with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and went on to co-found Spry, an award-winning online literary journal.

Customer Experience for Systems and Processes with Charlotte Isaac29 Jun 202200:49:03

Charlotte Isaac is a Business Operations Consultant who gave up her role as a corporate ops manager inside of a creative agency so that she could serve small business owners who love their people just as much as she does hers. Through her signature program, Ease Seekers Society, and her DIY Dubsado shop, Charlotte helps overwhelmed and overworked entrepreneurs build customized solutions so they can serve their clients better, automate busywork, and feel confident in their business. Blessed with a travel bug herself, Charlotte leads by example, having designed her own business in a way that allows plenty of space to enjoy life with her husband, both in their hometown of Sydney, Australia and around the world.

In this conversation, we talk about how systems can help business owners provide the best possible customer experience.

Here's what we covered in detail:

  • Why Dubsado (and the importance of choosing a tool that can grow with you)
  • How our customers come to us thinking they need one thing, but we’re able to provide them with more value than the face-value need or problem they’re experiencing
  • How people think systems = automation or tech, but words play a vital role when it comes to systems
  • Some of the many common touch points where words
  • Erin’s excitement over a compliment one of her client’s shared about Erin’s invoices
  • The 3 most important project phases and how to wow your clients in each phase (plus, a suggestion on how Erin breaks the third phase into two different sections)
  • Why systems aren’t sneaky or robotic. Instead, they’re a service for your client.
  • What goes into a services guide (Hint: Charlotte has a small and very helpful Services guide training in her shop. I’ve taken it and can recommend it!)
  • What goes into a Welcome Guide and how they can help you set boundaries within your business

Developing Thought Leadership Using Roundtables and Workshops with Jessica Lackey06 Jun 202400:43:02

We're a few episodes into this mini-series on thought leadership, which means its just about time to address the fact that a person isn't born WITH thought leadership. Thought leadership is actually created, developed, recreated, curated, and built upon over time.

And one way to do that: to practice your thought leadership and strengthen it is to offer workshops and roundtables to an interested audience. When you're in front of a live audience, you'll be better able to determine what hits, what falters, and then make changes to adjust and improve your thought leadership in ways you can't do with other mediums.

Today, I'm joined by Jessica Lackey, and we're going to talk all about using roundtables and workshops as a way to benefit your audience and also to create, adjust, and build upon your thought leadership. This is a must listen episode of Talk Copy to Me, and I hope you'll listen in.

On the previous episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, we talked about testimonials.

But what gets you stellar testimonials?

The answer is simple: you provide an excellent customer experience.

Megan works with female small biz owners and entrepreneurs to build their brand narratives and create offer suites that build a true connection with their audience. Social Proofing: How to Ask for a Testimonial (And Use It!)09 Jun 202200:29:37

As a business owner, it's vital to have testimonials on your website —and basically throughout all your marketing content and social channels. In today's economy, consumers want to feel like they can trust the brands and businesses they purchase from. Social proofing your copy and content helps your clients gain confidence and makes the decision-making process so much easier for them.

Plus, testimonials can help with SEO and storytelling, especially if you can turn your client's answers into case study marketing assets.

But, do you know how to ask for a testimonial, and even more importantly, where to put it once you get it? In this episode, we'll talk about the many ways you can ask for testimonials from your clients, where to display them, and how to use them to showcase your previous clients' experiences so your leads and overall audience feels excited to move forward and work with you, too.

Curious about testimonials and how to use them? Here’s what was covered…

  • Why social proofing via storytelling is a powerful conversion tool.
  • Why business owners should prioritize getting and using social proof
  • How to ask for testimonials from your current and former clients
  • How to incorporate social proof on your website, sales copy, and more places
  • How testimonials can help you improve your website SEO
  • How to map out your customers' journey with your testimonials

Erin's homework assignment for this episode

Go get testimonials! But seriously, if you're not sure how to go about doing that, I've got a great option for you. The Testimonial Toolbox will help you create systems to ask for testimonials so social proofing your web and sales copy will be a breeze. Sales Page Copywriting for a Short or Long Form Sales Page25 May 202200:25:41

Let's face it, you probably have really strong feelings about sales pages.

Most of the people I work with (or talk to!) either prefer a long sales page or a short sales page, and they definitely have their strong opinions on why those types of sales pages are their favorite. In this episode, we'll talk about both, as well as approaching sales from a place of service.

Here's what we covered:

  • Why sales are important. Sure, it's an obvious answer, but you need encouragement to get out there and sell your services and products.
  • Why selling is a service. When you shift your mindset to understand this, the anxiety of selling seems to just....well...disappear!
  • Reminder: the people who find their way to your sales page by choice (and why this matters).
  • Ever been disappointed by going to a really boring party? That's how leads feel about unappealing sales copy.
  • The reason why long sales pages are so long. (Haven't you always wondered this?)
  • Your clients don't necessarily have pain points...and if they don't remember, they do have needs.
  • The very questions you need to ask yourself before writing a sales page or hiring a copywriter to do it for you.
  • The outlines of both short and long sales pages. Not separated by sections or "rows" of content — I'm not sharing a template here —
  • If you have a primed buyer, make it easy for them to jump right to make a purchase. Similarly, provide enough information for the less aware or less ready clients to make a decision that they feel comfortable with.

I ALSO TALKED ABOUT TESTIMONIALS IN THIS EPISODE
And we allllll know how important testimonials are for both service providers and businesses that sell products.

Yet, so many business owners don't really know how to go about getting testimonials — never mind GOOD testimonials. Which is exactly why I created the Testimonial Toolbox, and I encourage you to work through this small course (don't worry, you can work through the material all in one sitting!)  https://bit.ly/eotestimonial

Non-Sleazy Sales Copy and Smart Launches with Jess Haney18 May 202200:48:59

Okay, let’s begin by addressing that this episode is long. Though every moment of this conversation on ethical sales launches and how to approach non-sleazy sales copy is so valuable, so I encourage you to listen all the way to the end (Listen and take notes. Listen and take notes, my friends.)

  • How to go from 1:1 to 1:many
  • How a 1:many model lowers the barrier to entry while still providing a lot of support to your clients.
  • How to look at sales as a service
  • How to ideate what to offer and how to be strategic about when and how to launch
  • How capacity planning goes into strategic sales launches
  • Why copywriting (or working with a copywriter) truly needs to be the first step after you’ve created an offer
  • What to do to course correct if you approach a copywriter too late in the launch process
  • Data. Data. Data. Why you need to collect and analyze date to make strategic sales decisions
  • How many different things factor into conversions and conversion copywriting.
  • The myth of 7-figure launch and false marketing promises
  • Erin’s crush on Trevor Noah and why that’s actually pretty relevant to this conversation
  • How to approach copy by acknowledging pain points without taking advantage of them, and more importantly how to shy away from shame-driven marketing

Lazy and Strategic Sales Launches with Kristin Macintyre11 May 202200:44:42

How do you feel about writing sales copy or planning a sales launch?

In this episode, Kristin and I will discuss:

  • What a lazy launch is and how you can learn so much from them for future strategic launches
  • What Kristin learned from her own lazy launch and how she shifted her upcoming launch based on the information she learned from the first launch.
  • How your clients (and VOC research) can help you determine what the product will look like when it launches and how your messaging gets marketing to your ideal audience
  • There’s a massive amount of copy that goes into any sales launch. Think: Sales page, emails, funnels, conversion events, and other assets, like registration pages, ads, and more (and more and more!)
  • The difference between a launch strategist and a sales copywriter and how someone can play both roles, but that doesn’t mean all copywriters help to create launch or funnel strategy
  • How the three pieces to all launches are: Audience, offer, and copy
  • Voice of customer research and data informs copy, which means there’s no guessing from copywriters
  • Learning the level of awareness your potential buyers are helps to create copy
  • Why a copywriter is only as good as the questions they ask….so let them ask those questions to help guide your project

The POWER Pre-Launch Marketing Framework with Ash Chow 04 May 202200:46:41

Want to know what makes for a successful sales launch?

Well, one of the key elements is prepping your audience during a pre-launch period so they're primed and ready to buy when it's time to sit down and sell.

Launch strategist, Ash Chow, stops by the podcast today to talk about pre-launch strategy and her POWER framework. This is a longer-than-usual episode and every moment is worth a listen.

Curious about pre-launch strategy? Here's exactly what we discussed on the podcast:

  • How most business owners attach a lot of themselves to what they've created, which leads to fear or anxiety in regard to launching.
  • Ash's mindset coach reminds her that "the victory is in the taking action." and shifting your mindset from outcomes to actions will lead to more contentment
  • How pre-launch marketing helps you do less heavy lifting during the actual launch period
  • The timeline to share pre-launch marketing content before a launch, and what to do if you start sharing pre-launch content a bit later than you should have
  • The factors that go into determining when to start intentional pre-launch marketing, and how to determine how capacity planning and other factors play into the timeline
  • Ash's framework that covers the five specific things your pre-launch marketing needs to do before your official launch. You don't want to miss this part!
  • Creating content that makes your product seem like a no-brainer offer.
  • Long versus short sales pages and the benefits of both.

Is SEO for Copywriting A Smart Investment?30 Apr 202200:28:00

I'm going to be honest with you: When I started my career, I didn't think SEO for copywriting was as powerful as SEO for content writing. <Hangs head in shame>

But for many reasons, I realized that there was just as much value in SEO for copywriting projects like web pages (and potentially even sales pages — gasp!) as there was in longer-form content.  In this episode, I'll talk about whether or not investing SEO in your copywriting efforts will bring a good return on investment. And if so, what you can do to maximize that return.

Off-Site SEO for Podcasts and More with Akilah Thompkins-Robinson19 Apr 202200:48:52

Think SEO is just for your website? Think again! The effort you put into SEO for podcasts, YouTube channels, and other media outlets is such a smart investment in your marketing. But where do you even begin to use keywords and keyword phrases when you’re not writing content for your site? How can you make sure you’re not creating (and getting dinged by the big ol’ search engines for) duplicate content.

In this episode, I’m talking with Akilah Thompkins-Robinson of Girl Get Visible about alllllll the ways SEO can be a major marketing asset when you work on building it up off of your website. There are opportunities to rank with your podcast, YouTube channel, and the guesting opportunities you do in other people’s communities. Good news. Akilah and I will explain exactly how to do that.

SEO for podcasts and YouTube doesn’t get enough mic time. Which is why I’m so grateful for this conversation with Akilah Thompkins-Robinson.

SEOhhhhh! The Basics of Search Engine Optimization and Why SEO Is a Marketing Must05 Apr 202200:25:20

I'm going to be honest with you from the very beginning: I am a geek for all things SEO.

I love the value it delivers. I love keyword research and the "game" of determining the best keywords and tracking them over time. I love using those keywords as I write my copy and making all the strategic decisions necessary to ensure I'm following SEO best practices.

But not everyone loves SEO as much as I do. And I can understand why — SEO can be difficult to understand at first.

But that doesn't mean it has to be hard to understand forever!

I thought recording an SEO podcast for beginners would help the Talk Copy to Me podcast listeners understand the basics of SEO before we dive into how SEO in regard to website copy, content, and off-site optimization for podcasts and video shows.

We've spent this mini-series talking about web pages, so let's end it by talking about all the other types of pages you can have on your site, in addition to the Big 3 we talked about in the past few episodes.

Here, we'll review 20+ types of pages you might want on your site. How many do you think yours has right now?

EPISODE 007.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Here's exactly what was discussed on the show:

  • How Shop pages can be set up different depending on the products, productized services, programs, or courses available
  • Whether frequently asked questions belong on their own page or if they should be spread out on services pages
  • How to include testimonials on your website and whether they should be on their own page
  • How a portfolio page and case studies can work together on your website; or, alternatively, why you might want to consider separating them.
  • Where the contact page belongs on your site (this isn't for everyone, but this one might surprise you!)
  • What are landing pages?
  • How to set up lead magnets and quizzes and why/how you'd send people to these landing pages
  • Why confirmation or redirect pages often get overlooked, but how you could implement them on your site.
  • Types of visibility pages, like speaker or media pages and what the differences are between the two.
  • The differences between a resources page and a blog, and how you would use both on a website
  • A soapbox rant about the importance of SEO
  • Dedicated pages for visibility efforts, like a podcast or YouTube channel
  • And let's not forgot about the sitemap, privacy page, your terms of use, disclaimers, and cookie policies

FYI: I do realize I was calling it Terms and Conditions in the episode — instead of Terms of Use — but I'm hoping you'll forgive me here ;)

How to Write a Services Page That Converts22 Mar 202200:41:32

How confident are you with your website's Services or Work With Me page? Are your offers or products all listed on one page? Are you using secondary services pages? How many spots in your top navigation bar are being taken by your offers?

Writing your services page might seem easy if you know your offers well, but there are a LOT of decisions that go into determining how to visually offer your products and services, in addition to how to shape the messaging to move your leads through a decision-making process.

In this episode, we'll talk about the different ways you can present your offers and products to your website viewers, as well as what needs to go on the page (and how to present it!) to make conversions.

  • How to determine which of these 3.5 approaches to services pages is best for your business
  • What information needs to be on your services page(s)? (This part is pretty meaty, and you don't want to miss it!)
  • Should prices be listed on your services page? If so, how? If not, why? What other ways can pricing be shared?
  • The similarities and differences between services pages and sales pages
  • Why your lead magnet (usually) doesn't go on your services page(s)

The Key Elements of All Successful Website Homepages01 Feb 202200:28:27

Okay — be honest with me for a second. How does your website make you feel? If you're squirming in your seat right now, you are definitely not alone.

I hear this all the time from prospective clients. They know the importance of a quality website, but they are not thrilled with what they have right now. They're worried that their copy doesn't speak to their audience or it doesn't showcase their mission, vision, and values in a way that they want it to. They may feel like there's no personality or it's not clear from their web presence what an incredible experience that they actually do provide for their customers.

Oh, and I also hear from a lot of people how jealous they are of their competitor's websites. They feel frustrated that people who have been in business for a shorter period of time or who may appear to have less experience than them seem to be vocalizing their message with clarity and attracting the clients that they wish that they could reach.

It's time to change all that. For the next few episodes, I'll be sharing a mini-series on web copy discussing how to develop strong Home, About, and Services pages, along with an episode on all the other pages your site might have (or need!). Today, we're talking the good ol' home page.

Is your website up to par? Yes? No? Maybe? Either way, this episode is a must listen.

Do You Need a Website for Your Business?18 Jan 202200:22:03

Imagine a website void of all words.

What would it look like?

There's be colors, of course. You'd likely see some pictures of people or products. There will be buttons and maybe even forms. But, when  combined, do all of those things give you a clear idea what the site is about? Would you be able to identify what kind of business it is? Who the professional is (and what they do!), or anything else?

Chances are, you wouldn't be able to tell a thing about a website if it didn't have  words on it.

So, why are so many small business owners still not investing in their websites?

Now, we’re talking about web copy today simply because I’m biased. As a website copywriter, my job is to write website words, and I’m pretty passionate about cheering on creative entrepreneurs and smart service providers.

But the point stays the same when you translate it to any type of marketing message: Without words, there's a very slim chance that your audience is going to understand your message, and more importantly there's an even smaller chance that they'll connect with it.

But let's stick with websites for this episode. Here, we'll learn .why having a website is so important for any small business owner in 2022, what we can learn from  sites who obviously didn't invest in their web projects, and talk about the many ways to build (or rebrand) an online presence, regardless of whether you've been in business for a while or you're just starting out.

2 Questions Everyone Wonders As They Consume Content18 Jan 202200:14:31

EPISODE 001.

Wait — what’s this all about?

What’s in it for me?

You might think it’s a bit silly to start the first episode of a brand new podcast posing those two questions, but the truth is, when it comes to creating any type of copy or content, you’re audience is going to ask themselves those two very questions — whether consciously or subconsciously.

Think about it: we all ask ourselves these very questions as we scroll through our social media feeds, scan the subject lines in our email inboxes, and sort through our physical mail after grabbing it from the mailbox.

There’s limited time in all of our already jam-packed days and we want to make sure we’re investing what time we do have in the right ways.

Which is why each and every time you sit down to write copy for your own business and brands, you need to be able to clearly answer those two questions:

What is this message all about?

What’s in it for my audience?

On this (very first!) episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, Erin  describes ways in which big brands and small businesses forget to answer those very questions, as well as suggested fixes.

Trailer: Introducing Talk Copy to Me, a Marketing Podcast08 Dec 202100:03:24

Who would have thought that putting words to the page would be one of the most difficult parts of doing business?

Yet here you are. Spending all your time trying to massage your message, and what you end up with (or what you've already hired out) lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.  And you know that if you're not content with the content, it's going to fall flat for your audience as well.

I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be like this.

Hello friends and welcome to the Talk Copy to Me podcast. I’m your host, Erin Ollila, conversion copywriter, copy coach, and ice-cream indulger.

My mission for Talk Copy to Me is to empower creative entrepreneurs and smart service providers to step into the spotlight and spark a connection with their carefully crafted copy.

See, clever words strung together may sound nice, but strategic and SEO-focused sentences make the difference between the wrong people knocking on your door and the right people patiently waiting on your wait list.

With over 15 years of publishing experience, an MFA in Creative Writing and years of working alongside billion dollar brands, I get what it takes to ideate, create, and implement smart copy and strategic content campaigns.

Though, I also understand how hard it is to be successful and consistent with your own marketing as a small business owner.

I’ve witnessed too many creative entrepreneur  floundering as they attempted to launch, rebrand, or pivot their offers and services simply because they didn’t have access to the marketing and copywriting know-how those big brands can easily tap into.

And that, my friends, is exactly why Talk Copy to Me exists.

Since starting my business, I’ve supported hundreds of small business owners, just like you, to develop marketing strategies, uncover and own their brand messaging, and wow with their websites.

I hope this podcast inspires you, encourages you, and lights a fire for you to perfect your copywriting.

You’re in the right place if you’re ready to attract high-quality leads, create instant connections, and transform your audience into paying customers.

Talk Copy to Me will take you behind the scenes with industry experts and give you quality one-on-one time with me, your favorite — or soon to be favorite — copywriter and copy coach.

What Does Thought Leadership Mean?20 May 202400:27:41

Think about all of the leaders in your industry who are consistently getting headlines, who speak at major conferences, and who seem to have a loyal and dedicated following who hang on their every word.

What sets them apart?

It's not luck. It's not just having the right connections. It's simple: These individuals understand the art of thought leadership. They have taken the chance on themselves to develop what could be a body of work, what could be intellectual property, and they're positioning themselves as the go to experts. And what they're doing is they're inspiring others to follow their lead.

Today's episode kicks off a brand new series all about thought leadership on Talk Copy to ME. And we're going to explore what it really means to be a thought leader and how you can develop and cultivate your thought leadership in a way that's best for you.

Plagiarism in the Digital Age: Practical Advice and a Personal Story of How My Work Was Stolen10 May 202400:31:54

Is plagiarism a crime? You betcha. But regardless of the legal implications and ethical issues with stealing someone else's work, plagiarism in the digital age runs rampant.

Business owners, course creators, and creatives of any kind often have their intellectual property stolen from them. It's often discussed, and people definitely feel strongly about this, but I don't think you really GET how awful it feels to be plagiarized until someone does it to you.

And my friends, someone just did this to me. My website copy, podcast content, and likely even my course content was stolen by another online business owner for use on two (TWO!) of their business websites and their new podcast.

In this episode, I'll share real-world instances of plagiarism that online businesses' face and the consequences of plagiarism in general, but especially in marketing. I'll unpack the legal and ethical implications of plagiarism, share real-world examples of intellectual property theft, and explore strategies for ways you can protect your intellectual property and make sure that you don't accidentally use someone else's IP in your own work.

And yes, if you stay for the end you'll get ALLLL the deets about how another creator — an artist, if you can believe it — stole my work and what I had to do to reclaim my copy, content, and concepts.

It's been a doozy of the past couple of weeks, friends. A doozy!

How to Measure Website ROI After a Site Launch12 Apr 202400:27:14

We talk about return on investment a lot in the marketing world. But how do you know that the thousands of dollars you spent on copywriting and design really gave you any website ROI?

Today I'm talking all about how to measure a website's success after it launches. After listening to the case study that I did with Tony Howell, who recently invested in a website copy project with me, I realized that there was a lot to be said about getting some data to know if the messaging choices, the design choices — and everything really — came together gave you a return on investment for your website.

Part Two of My Case Study With Tony Howell, an SEO and Website Copy Client05 Apr 202400:31:04

Part two of this website copy client case study is here! If you've been curious about would be like to work with me and what goes on behind the scenes in a website copy project, this episode will fill you in.

I invited Tony Howell, a website designer and personal branding expert to join me on Talk Copy to Me to chat about what it was like to work together.

If you haven't listened to part one of this case study yet, I highly recommend going back to the previous episode and giving it a listen first. Since these two episodes were recorded during one conversation we may reference the previous episode in what is discussed today.

Today, you'll hear part two. Tony and I talk about

  • Whether Tony had difficulty feeling as if he could trust me with his brand (since he's used to being the service provider, not the client)
  • What Tony learned from working with me that he'll take into future client projects and in his own copywriting for his business
  • How Erin had to check herself throughout the process to determine whether the advice she was giving was strategic or just preference-related
  • How Tony and Erin had to completely give up their normal processes and figure out how to work together and in tandem in writing and design
  • What website wireframing looks like when a copywriter creates it, and how a wireframe can influence the design process as well

And I sincerely hope that you'll tune back in tomorrow for part two of our conversation where we'll break down whether or not it was hard for Tony to put his faith in me, what  website wireframing looks like, and how we both had to significantly adjust our processes in order to work together.

  • Tony's strategic launch plans to drive traffic to his new website (you definitely won't be able to guess this one!)
  • Why now was the right time for Tony to hire a website copywriter
  • Ways you can work with a copywriting coach even if you're not ready to hire them for a complete done-for-you project
  • What influenced his services page and how we made the decisions we did about the messaging and the conversion copywriting needed
  • Tony's reaction to getting the first complete draft
  • What Tony learned about copywriting and SEO from working with Erin
  • and more!

And I sincerely hope that you'll tune back in tomorrow for part two of our conversation where we'll break down whether or not it was hard for Tony to put his faith in me, what  website wireframing looks like, and how we both had to significantly adjust our processes in order to work together.
