Some exciting insights to why as an architect we cannot skip those lost skills and methods in drawing manually as it can make us unstuck when it does not feel right while doing CAD / digital drawings. That and a lot more in-depth discussion on why manual drawings are very relevant and even more so in this day and age. | In-depth topic: Manual Drawing for developing design | 21 Jan 2023 | 00:15:41
In terms of purely production work there is no denying that CAD / digital drawings are better than manual drawings. However from initial ideas and concepts and right to detail design, manual drawings are essential and even better than CAD because of that connection between human and drawings. An interview with Amin Zakaria (teaser out soon) who does both and is an architectural educator specializing in drawings and practice drawing every day, talking about "the different muscle memory between using a mouse and a pencil" among others, will be published soon in this podcast. Would you study in a school that focuses on drafting and construction or art, architecture and history with more thought-provoking work? Can we have both? | Sense of drawing - Hand drawn, Autocad, Archicad, Revit, BIM? | 14 Nov 2022 | 00:26:11
What’s the difference between learning to draw by hand and using software or digital architecture tools? What’s the best software tool? Someone asked the question why architecture companies prefer their employees to draw in Autocad as they felt that it’s easier to draw in Archicad and Revit. This led to many conversations and led me to believe that we lost the ability to design in 2D as we had when we hand-drawn. We lost the ability to design as much as could. | Architecture and Reality - Drawings make it real! | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:14:38
Focusing on architecture education and why it is important that the process of imagining and visioning a design and putting it out as a drawing, or model with a strong description and narrative (essential keywords) is the key to starting being an architect. In a previous episode, we touched upon 'architecture and reality' and what is real. In this episode, we argue that 'drawings are reality' as it is depicted from the mind. Drawings make it real, even if it is not yet built. As long as it is in the mind it is still dreaming, a vision yet to be realised but it is still a reality. | Master builder: reality or myth | 25 Sep 2022 | 00:29:08
We continue with the idea of the architect where in the past, the architect is given the exclusive role to lead the project from beginning to completion. However, at present, this is not necessarily so, depending on the type of project and contract, the architect may only be involved in parts / certain phases of the project. This episode touches on that idea of a 'master builder' taken from the last episode and article by Brennan, and as a reminder of what an architect once was. Other discussions include the perceptions that a mid-level architect may have when the idea of the architect is not the same as before. Will disillusionment and disappointment prevail and make the architect quit his/her career? | Architecture Practice & The Challenges Facing Architecture | 22 Sep 2022 | 00:28:39
This is a commentary and reading of Joseph Brennan's article published in September 2021 published on medium.com. (Article link below). The overall idea is for Brennan to introduce "Digital practice for architects: a manual". In the first article, I referred to the first article: " The challenges facing architecture", where quote: To rethink architecture, we must first examine the enormous challenges that are currently facing our industry. Brennan raised a number of points similar to what Dami Lee discussed on her YouTube video channel on "Everything you need to know before you start architecture", like working in a team, complexities of working with other consultants, budget, specialization, licensure etc. These aspects are important to consider on the issues that we had been discussing on this podcast recently. | Commentary: Universiti Malaya campus design thesis (July - August 2020 special semester) | 13 Sep 2022 | 00:21:12
In the conversation that Kevin Mark Low and I had with the 5 architecture graduates, Gan (2021) gave his design thesis views at the end. He said: "So the problem is when the world didn't give chances for us, they didn't prepare the environment, we go and seek it." He also talked about why the Universiti Malaya campus design is fascinating as all the projects relate to each. Unfortunately, the original tutors could not work with the students after establishing the alternative master plan ended by the 7th week, and another set of tutors was instructed to do so. This episode is my explanation and commentary on what Gan had mentioned. I would not have done this commentary if Gan had not mentioned this. It is for the sole purpose of explaining things contextually so that the audience can understand better the conversation. This is a write-up (blog post) based on this podcast episode. | Teaser - New series on Observations and Starting Conversations | 11 Sep 2022 | 00:20:47
Observation and Starting Conversations is the core fundamental skill that is needed to be learned and cultivated when we first start out in architecture, at the very beginning of learning to be an architect before one is able to solve design problems. It's a very important thing to do in terms of the exchange of ideas that we create starting conversations. | Commentary: Leaders are critical thinkers | 19 Aug 2022 | 00:19:40
A commentary on the topics of the "culture of reading that will result in more critical thinkers that can differentiate truth from lies" and "bringing awareness on social media", was addressed, by Kevin Mark Low, for the first part of three episodes which has to do with "influencers and leaders". To create the "culture of reading", I assume that an individual wants to have a book to be their companion, at all times, every day, whereby having read the book, be it fiction or nonfiction, and delving into the mind of the author, and even authors telling stories from a third-person viewpoint. Thus, being comfortable with what you read, or enjoying reading is what matters most. Arguably, there are some books that are hard to read, and there are some books that are necessary to read. This list is given to me by Kevin, and thankfully, it is a good reference to discuss the matter further: click the blog post link.
