Andrew Weatherall – From Primal Scream to Warp Records and beyond, the Guv’nor of British dance music
Saison 1 · Épisode 63
lundi 28 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:03:23
Diving deep into all things ’90s… We celebrate Andrew Weatherall, the DJ giant who influenced every corner of electronic music across the ’90s and ’00s. Master arranger, remix royalty, father of indie dance and pioneering selector, he brought dub, rock and roll, soul, pop, punk, noise and techno from across all generations to the dancefloor. “Wevvers” kickstarted the ’90s with Primal Scream’s ‘Loaded’ and subsequent album Screamadelica, working with Happy Mondays, New Order, Beth Orton, The Manics, St Etienne and My Bloody Valentine.
Then there’s his time on the infamous acid house fanzine Boy’s Own, his massively-influential Warp-signed band The Sabres of Paradise, right the way up to his Nine O’Clock Drop compilation which heralded the ’00s electroclash revolution. Veterans of Jockey Slut magazine (now Disco Pogo) Jim Butler and Johnno Burgess of Bugged Out! fame, join Miranda to talk about their book A Disco Pogo Tribute To Andrew Weatherall and celebrate the man known as The Guv’nor.

Kylie! – Michael Hutchence, ‘Indie Kylie’ and those gold hotpants
Saison 1 · Épisode 62
lundi 21 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:04:48
Diving deep into all things ’90s… It’s the episode you’ve been waiting for. We present to you, Princess of Pop, ultimate gay icon, international treasure… Kylie. She kicked off the decade with Michael Hutchence on her arm – a masterclass in shaking off your good girl past – before diving into the world of indie via Nick Cave, the Manics, the Poetry Olympics, and a series of identity-shifting haircuts. There were highs, and there were definitely lows. Indie Kylie left the fans wanting, and the death of Michael Hutchence closed the door on one of the most important chapters of her life. But the millennium – and those gold hotpants – heralded a comeback like no other. Today we are talking ALL things Kylie, and who better to lead us than the fabulous Michael Cragg: returning Talk ’90s guest, journalist, Kylie fanatic and author of Can't Get You Out of My Head: In Search of Kylie, out on September 24th.

The Face magazine – How the Bible of the ’90s launched Kate Moss and got sued by Jason Donovan
Saison 1 · Épisode 60
lundi 14 septembre 2026 • Durée 59:05
Diving deep into all things ’90s… From Kate Moss and Keanu Reeves to Blur, Britpop and climate change, the original style mag The Face celebrated youth culture as well as spotlighting social change. Founded by former NME editor Nick Logan in May 1980, it paved the way for titles like i-D and Dazed. When Nick fell ill in the mid-80s, Sheryl Garrett stepped up to become editor, and under her and art director Phil Bicker it became the face of everything cool in ’90s music, fashion, film and culture.
When they put a Corrine Day shot of a fresh-faced young girl on the May 1990 cover, The Face launched Kate Moss’s career. From jungle to Britpop, Harlesden to Hollywood, the mag was there creating stories and shoots that still resonate today. Sheryl joins us to discuss life at the epicentre of Cool Britannia, how they knew Kate Moss was a star, and the infamous Jason Donovan lawsuit which nearly folded the magazine for good.

The Girlie Show’s Sarah Cawood – “I was never a ladette!”
Saison 1 · Épisode 58
lundi 31 août 2026 • Durée 57:14
Diving deep into all things ’90s… Young and quick-witted with an infectious energy and a flame of short red hair, Sarah Cawood encapsulated everything it meant to be a ’90s TV presenter. Fronting The Girlie Show with Sara Cox before moving onto Singled Out, Live and Kicking, Top of the Pops and Night Fever, she represented everything a smart carefree ’90s woman could be. But behind the scenes it wasn’t that easy.
Sarah had to prove herself against misogyny of the era: when her male co-hosts decided move on, Sarah would be asked to leave too. And even though The Girlie Show had a magnetic all-female lineup, an anarchic format and a cult audience it was came from a male perspective that doesn’t sit well today.
Sarah Cawood joins Miranda Sawyer to dig into the highs and lows of 90s TV, explain why she’s decided to document the era on Substack, and says why she’ll always be a rebellious indie kid at heart. Sign up to support us on Patreon for extra material too.

DJ legend SMOKIN JO on 90’s clubs – “It was hot, it was sweaty, everyone was off their t*ts!”
Saison 1 · Épisode 57
lundi 24 août 2026 • Durée 01:00:10
Diving deep into all things ’90s… A regular on the decks at Turnmills, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, The Haçienda, Space, Amnesia, Privilege and Panorama Bar, the legendary Smokin Jo is the only woman ever (!!) to win DJ Mag’s coveted DJ of the Year award.
After a painful childhood, she found herself and her family at gay raves, plus a new career and a lifelong obsession. But where were the female DJs? Jo tells Miranda how she took matters into her own hands and became an inspiration to generations of women – as you can read in her autobiography, You Don’t Need A Dick To DJ. Driven, free-spirited and dedicated to the decks, Jo has spent her life performing… when she’s not teaching yoga to Nick Clegg. More of that in the episode!

Raving in the ’90s – Pills, acid, warehouse parties and more with author Kirk Field
Saison 1 · Épisode 56
lundi 17 août 2026 • Durée 58:52
Diving deep into all things ’90s… “It’s an event for 4000 people starting at midnight. We won’t need alcohol – just water and soft drinks.” When Kirk Field found himself helping a mobile bar service to deliver to strange, out-of-town, alcohol-free parties – Sunrise, Raindance ajd more – he was on the road to becoming a full-on, acid-house-mad, die-hard raver.
From these early days of naivety to his rave column for Mixmag and now award-winning and bestselling tribute to the era, Rave New World: Confessions of a Raving Reporter, he tells how raves transformed the ’90s – and Britain. “Our lives are becoming separated,” he tells Miranda, “and I think there’s a danger in that.” As he writes in Rave New World: “When we watch someone else do the same thing at the same time as us, it feels like we become one.”

Tim Booth from James – “Sit Down? I’d rather keep dancing.”
Saison 1 · Épisode 55
lundi 10 août 2026 • Durée 01:02:42
Diving deep into all things ’90s… It was impossible to miss anthemic Manchester groundbreakers James’ monster hits in the ’90s, like Sit Down, Laid and She’s A Star. Huge communal singalongs with a melancholic beauty that struck a chord on both sides of the pond, they put James right into the mainstream (and on thousands of t-shirts too). Away from the charts it was even more of a rollercoaster story. After blagging his way into a Manchester acting school, Tim Booth went out one night, narrowly avoided a fight with some blokes who were trying to steal his drink, and found himself the lead singer of their band – the group he’s now been fronted for nearly 45 years.
From ending up in a cult to near death experiences, band addictions, breakups and makeups, collaborations with Brian Eno and Angelo Badalamenti, and an appearance in Batman Begins, Tim’s story is astonishing. He joins Miranda to discuss how Eastern philosophy saved his life… how an incident with a maraca nearly sank the band… and why despite never quite cracking America, he has no regrets.

Shirley Manson of Garbage – “Weird girls and disobedient women? That’s the ’90s”
Saison 1 · Épisode 54
lundi 3 août 2026 • Durée 01:11:50
Diving deep into all things ’90s… The fierce face and blazing voice of post-grunge feminist rock’n’roll, Shirley Manson became a 90s icon with Garbage’s era-defining hits: Only Happy When It Rains, Stupid Girl, Milk, I Think I’m Paranoid and more. A James Bond theme, acting in video games and TV – she played an actual Terminator! – fashion fame and more all followed. What was it like in the whirlwind of ’90s alt.rock, when you’ve graduated from Scottish bands Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and Angelfish to a new outfit whose drummer Butch Vig had just produced Nirvana’s Nevermind, and the whole world has its eyes on you?
Now back with Garbage and as fiery as ever, Shirley joins Miranda to talk global fame in the ’90s, being a literally starving artist when Garbage made their double-platinum selling debut Garbage, and becoming rock royalty.
