In this episode of Tales from the Truth Seekers, I’m joined by Abigail Kochunas —artist, actress, writer, poet, painter, energy worker, and survivor of a fourteen-year coercive experience connected to Scientology with an acting teacher in Los Angeles. In it, she bravely opens up about what Scientology is really like, how our current mainstream political and spiritual circles mirror the cult dynamics that she found herself victim of, and offers sage advice for anyone living in America today who wants to protect their mind and heart from the insidious nature of ideological possession.

If I was able to go back in time and describe to 2012 Natalie what the next fifteen years were going to look like, both personally and collectively, my chin would have fallen all the way to the floor. You will have a life-alternating spiritual experience, Donald Trump will be president, aliens are real, and the twists and turns your life is about to take might be too much for you to process all in one sitting. Reconnecting with old friends has a way of bringing up these kinds of thoughts. Jimmy T. Martin is one of these old friends, and the paths we’ve both been fated to walk since our fresh-faced, 20-something days have be far from easy. In this episode, Jimmy opens up about losing his beautiful wife to cancer at 29 years old, grappling with losing the will to live, reencountering her during an experience with DMT, finding love again, and all that the hardships have to offer when you look back at your life and realize the true power and meaning of what it is to surrender.

I am lucky enough to live in one of the most magical places on earth. The ancient hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains are home to the world famous Monroe Institute, Yogaville which hosts the only shrine in the world dedicated to all major religions, as well as The Department of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia, just to name a few. This specific department at UVA, affectionally nicknamed “DOPS,” is a scientific research group devoted to the rigorous evaluation of empirical evidence for extraordinary human experiences and capacities. I am also lucky enough to call Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova of DOPS a friend, and this episode is full of her professional and personal insight on the near-death experience. It isn’t often that you are able to capture this kind of perspective from someone on a topic like this. There has been a long-time division in our culture between the heart and the mind. Yet Marieta has studied numerous NDE cases at the most prestigious university in the state, and her prolific academic knowledge combined with her personal spiritual insight create a balance and unification of this rift that is nothing short of healing.

Marieta Pehlivanova, Ph.D., is a Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies. She earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology with a focus in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research explores near-death experiences, children’s reports of past-life memories, after-death communications, and the personality and cognitive factors associated with psi beliefs and experiences. Before joining UVA, she worked as a biostatistician in health research. She has presented her work nationally on near-death experiences, survival research, and best practices for supporting people who report spiritually transformative experiences.

When I was a twenty-something, running around Brooklyn NY, auditioning for commercials with my cat eyes, red lip, and skinny jeans, I never would have guessed that 15 years later, I would be interviewing my old actor friend about his near-death experience, and his full on encounter with God. These were not things we talked about then, or even acknowledged to be real. But so far my life has been nothing but surprises, and I am here for it. Timothy describes his previous self as a lukewarm Christian, who followed his faith in a transactional way. But when he was rushed to the ER last year due to a sudden stroke, his consciousness left this world as the surgeons were performing emergency surgery. What he experienced has changed him forever. When you survive death, you are born again, and as he shares his story, this newness radiates with every word he speaks. It’s the same newness that comes from an infant, or a child, or anyone who has just came from beyond the veil to return with the gift of pure, unconditional, love.

Timothy Lofing was born and raised in Montana. He is an independent producer and director working in New York City and across the United States. He has worked in the commercial, film, and television market from the age of 18. When listening to someone describe what it’s like to die, it doesn’t matter how many times you hear it, you always leave the conversation feeling profoundly affected. The wisdom, love, and humility that permeate each word is undeniable, as some deep and ancient knowing begins to stir at the root of your being. I only knew Evan as an online classmate at Atlantic University. I specifically remembered him because of his natural ability to leave his fellow students feeling incredibly inspired when it was his turn to share in discussion. I was unaware when I reached out to him a few years later for an interview, that I was asking the newly elected president of the International Association for Near-Death Studies to come be on my podcast. Despite his new role and busy schedule, he graciously agreed, and with that was born a truly beautiful episode. This journey we are on that spans dimensions and multiple lifetimes- may we all finally experience a moment of pure rebirth.

Evan’s Bio:

Evan was an entrepreneur who built and sold several successful companies in the automotive aftermarket. He also served as an officer in the United States Airforce Reserve. Following his business career, Evan embarked on a new path of service, returning to university to become a transpersonal psychologist, minister, and spiritual counselor. He is trained in a wide array of modalities, including regression therapy, NLP, and Reiki energy healing. A published author of spiritually uplifting articles, Evan is also dedicated to his community, supporting the Buddhist Shambala Mountain Center and volunteering as a caseworker at the Fish Food Bank, where he counseled and mentored others. On September 11th, 2001, Jenna Axelrod experienced true loss. After the towers fell, she and her husband were invited to so many funerals that they couldn’t attend them all and had to pick between them. At the time, Jena was a stand up comedienne and waitress, turned bond broker. Her world couldn’t have been more separate from the spiritual side of life, but perhaps these experiences have a way of finding you when so many of your friends suddenly find themselves out of body. Her story is amazing, beautiful, and a true testament to the notion that the unseen realities that our society appears to ignore, can make themselves known to anyone at any time.

This episode is one of the most powerful I’ve recorded so far. Not many stories are as equally bone chilling as they are beautiful. I was truly touched. Debbie Ison has encountered disembodied energies throughout her life, but it took many years and multiple life experiences for her to arrive where she is now. While Debbie is careful not to claim if she, or anyone else knows whether a perceived possession is a construct of the brain or an external entity, she is doing powerful, alchemical, spiritual healing either way. She is a primary school educator turned spiritual release therapist, and her story gave me reassurance. It validated something deep within me that we all desperately need to be true- that good will always conquer evil, and that authentic love is the most powerful tool of all. Of course this is not always the case on a micro level in the material realm. But on a broad, ontological level, this has to be the most fundamental truth that there is. There are no other options. I hope you enjoy listening to Debbie describe her work as much as I did. Her clients come to her with spirits of the dead, or possibly even demons attached to them. Alternative voices come out of their mouths, sometimes hurling horrible abuse her way. But she is strong and she is armed. What is her most powerful weapon in the face of such horror? The gentle compassion of a school teacher.

Debbie Ison is a full-time hypnotherapist who works with clients to overcome a range of issues. Debbie is trained in 13 different therapies, and she also trains therapists in Hypnotherapy, Past Life Regression and Reiki. Throughout her therapeutic journey Debbie has been called to work with clients who wish to explore their spirituality and heal through a transpersonal approach, something which has led Debbie on a spiritual journey of her own. Juliet Trail was introduced to an out-of-body awareness early on in her childhood after experiencing a car crash that severely injured both herself and her mother. In adulthood, Juliet was extensively trained in the spiritual teachings of the Native American, Lakota Sioux tribe. Ever since Diomira Rose D'Agostino could remember, she always knew there was something more. Throughout childhood she wondered what it was that they were not teaching her in school, and what was inherently missing from her everyday life. This launched her into a lifelong quest to find out, and her story does not disappoint. Diomira has traveled the world, visiting many famous, treasured, ancient sites that predate antiquity, and without knowing a thing about the magic that lives there, she happened to find her holy grail in Glastonbury. Diomira Rose D’Agostino is a teacher of the Earth Mysteries, a soul path mentor and guide, certified flower essence healer, soul astrologer, plant spirit ceremonialist, and metaphysician. Bernie’s Bio:

Bernie graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, Delaware in 1960 at #5 Grade Point Average. He majored in Chemistry at Swarthmore College and was one of two outstanding pre-medical students. He attended Yale Medical School graduating in 1964. He did his one-year general medicine internship at Mount Zion Medical Center in San Francisco and then completed the three-year psychiatric residency at Stanford in 1974 after working in the U.S Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco from 1971-1973 as the hospital’s psychiatrist. He then joined the faculty of the department of psychiatry at the University of Washington in Seattle. After ten years there he was denied tenure and then joined the faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he became a world leader in the study of chest pain and panic disorder which led to his becoming chair of the psychiatry department. (A door closes, and a big window opens.) Building on his book The Structure of Individual Psychotherapy, he created the book Learning Psychotherapy which was taught to half the psychiatric residency training programs in the United States. In 2006 he started formal research into coincidences and then, in 2009, moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, to join the Division of Perceptual Studies of the University of Virginia, which supported his coincidence work as a non-paid faculty member. As a “recovering academic,” he led the development of The Coincidence Project.

Carol’s Bio:

Carol E. Richardson was born on the equator in what was then the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and spent her childhood moving between Africa and the United States from 1958 to 1977. Raised by highly educated missionary parents, she grew up in a multicultural and deeply spiritual environment that shaped both her intellectual curiosity and spiritual outlook. Widowed at 28 after her husband died from a cerebral aneurysm, leaving her with two young children, she went on to earn a Master of Public Health degree and a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School. Ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she served churches for more than 15 years before pursuing Eastern spiritual studies, including nearly two decades of Raja Yoga meditation and Kriya Yoga practice.

In 2010, Richardson experienced what she describes as an “Enlightenment Vision,” inspiring her current work as an intuitive life coach and healer in the Washington, DC area. A lifelong lover of science as well as spirituality, she leads workshops on meditation and stress reduction and created “Mastermind Stars: Master Yourself & Your Life” for children, teens, and young adults. She also speaks on personal growth and resilience, including her motivational talk, “Why Are There Ants in My Salad?” Her mission is to help people recognize their potential, connect more deeply with the universe, and live with greater joy and purpose.

Kimla Desrosiers was raised Catholic until she encountered her first awakening upon reading about Buddhist teachings. The idea that everything within reality can be broken down into wisdom and compassion resonated so deeply with her, that she felt something within her heart break open and remember. Much to her parents’ discomfort, she left the Catholic Church, joined the Universal Unitarian church and eventually became a Tibetan Buddhist, taking a vow that spans across lifetimes. In this episode, she shares with us her experience of leaving her body for the first time, the beings she met there, and the wisdom they shared. She also shares her experience of clear light, non-duality, and oneness, something that is quite ineffable and yet simultaneously, could be discussed until the end of time. Dr. Nancy McLaughlin-Walter never expected that she would end up studying consciousness. I am excited to reintroduce a truly magical person to you all, Mr. Mark Phillips, whom you may have met in Season One. When Joan Walton wast just 16 years old, she walked out of church confirmation classes, upon learning the ceremony meant that she believed every single word in the Bible to be true. This started a lifelong, experiential, journey for Joan that set her on a path to discover universal spiritual truths for herself. From discovering the works and practices of Carl Jung, to the sudden and tragic death of her loving husband, to becoming the chair of the board for the Scientific and Medical Network, Joan has an incredible and inspiring story to share with all of us, and she makes it clear that the story is indeed where true awakening lies. Joan’s Bio: Joan is an Honorary Research Fellow with the Alef Trust. She is also a Principal Research Supervisor on the PhD Applied Transpersonal Psychology programme, and a research mentor for the Conscious Community Initiative. Joan gained her PhD from the University of Bath. Her thesis tells the story of her spiritual journey and draws on the social sciences, philosophy, depth and transpersonal psychology, eastern and western religions, quantum physics, and a science of consciousness. Her first degree was in the social sciences, and her Masters in Race & Education. She is also a professionally qualified social worker. Following a career in social work and education, Joan moved into the academic world. She is now in the School of Education, Language and Psychology at York St John University (YSJ), where she teaches and supervises postgraduate researchers registered for a PhD or a professional doctorate.

Joan has an interest in, and teaches, Research Methodologies, especially those that challenge the separation inherent in positivist paradigms. She has a particular interest in participative dialogue, co-operative inquiry, and other forms of integrating theory and action. She co-leads the cross-university research group Participatory Enquiry, Action Research & Democratic Methodologies in the Institute for Social Justice at YSJ. Joan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Scientific and Medical Network, a member of the Galileo Commission Steering Group, and is the Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Network for the Study of Spirituality.

Dr. Joan Walton has generously offered to switch hats with the host of Tale from the Truth Seekers so that listeners could get the inside perspective on Natalie’s story, what motivated her to start the podcast to begin with, and what she has learned and observed by interviewing 30+ people about their spiritual experiences in just one year. In 1977, P.M.H. Atwater died and came back three consecutive times. After this experience, she was sure that she was going crazy, until she attended a symposium in which a speaker gave a talk on eternal consciousness and shared an image that exactly matched what she had experienced when she died. Since then Sioux has focused her research on the paranormal in human history, mainly focusing on UFOs/Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). Tonya Schroka is no stranger to spiritual experiences, having had ties to the other realm since childhood. You may have heard of Scarlett’s story, as she was featured on The UnXplained with William Shatner in 2019. But her experience barely fits into a television show format, as it is one of the most beautiful stories you might hear on your quest to know the unknowable. Scarlett was doing her best as a single mother of two boys with special needs, when she discovered reiki healing could be highly beneficial to her son, so she decided to earn her certification. One night, while attending her AA meeting, she met a grieving mother who confessed that she had just been told by the hospital that there was nothing more they could do for her son. Much to her own surprise, Scarlett responded by telling the mother not to give up just yet, and that she would be happy to perform reiki on him the next day. This is where the unbelievably powerful magic, channelled from the beyond, begins to illuminate her story. He was a stranger, hovering between worlds, and she was a channel for divine love.

Scarlett L. Heinbuch, PhD

Scarlett L. Heinbuch worked in the financial services field for more than 20 years. She is an internationally known researcher/theorist in the area of women’s financial health and social norms theory.In her other world, Scarlett had a childhood Near-Death Experience (NDE) at the age of four, in which she was out of her body and felt the love and awareness of the universe. In a world that’s falling apart and seems laden with suffering, there’s a simultaneous unfolding of a collective awaking to our true nature and purpose on this earth. In this realm of duality, perhaps these extremes are unavoidable, yet the natural inclination towards balance is what can always bring us hope. I know, from a deep experiential place, that the human spirit, and all of creation, is made of one consciousness bound together by a force called “unconditional love.” So as we look out upon the landscapes of horror that seem to infiltrate our news sources, the best antidote to chaos that exists, is simply connecting with this gentle, profoundly powerful force within ourselves. Not through chasing, or attaching, but through pause, connection, and compassion for what’s real, now. This is the only true antidote. This is sanity.

I also hope it goes without saying that plenty of people have good experiences with religion, I do not condone gaslighting in the face of suffering, you should dream big, and any and all kinds of people have spiritual gifts. (There are times during solo episodes when the words flow and constant clarifications are tedious, so I have made sure to include them here.)

In Season One, Episode 7 of Tales from the Truth Seekers I had the pleasure of connecting with Lydia, a former university art professor who is deep in the midst of her spiritual journey, and recently returned from an extended residency at a Zen Buddhist monastery. In this episode, she shares her initial spiritual experience with us which encompassed vast, never-ending lightness, as well as intense darkness and fear, and the incredible, continuously evolving insights that can come with an experience like this. We both share our stories of attempting to navigate the aftermath, the struggles of trying to find a teacher who is not dismissive but understanding (even in some Buddhist circles), and our shared experience of how funny, alive, and un-serious the beauty of the world really is.

The most potent of all being an out of body experience that introduced a burning clarity back into his life, melting everything else away. This episode also touches on the struggles of integrating an experience like this back into daily life as we follow Roger into circles of people who seem to have grave misunderstandings about what it means to be “spiritual.” Yet he ends with hopeful perspectives on the nature of humanity and our innate connection to our distant indigenous past, as the inevitable restructuring of our modern society continues to loom ever nearer.

This episode is a special episode. Not long after I recorded this interview with Jewels, she passed away. I didn’t know she was sick at the time of recording, or at all. I am grateful that the nature of my podcast is to ask about the person‘s entire life. So I look forward to sharing and celebrating the incredible life of Jewels Maloney with you. Rest in peace dear one.

In Season One, Episode 4 of Tales from the Truth Seekers, I had the pleasure of interviewing my professor/mentor Jewels Maloney, from the Edgar Cayce founded college, Atlantic University. In this episode, Jewels takes us through the incredible ups and downs of her life and spiritual journey since 1977. From her initial heart opening and kundalini awakening, to a true dark night of the soul, to becoming a channel for the sacred Magdalene, to the disarmament rallies of the 1980s, her life is a myriad of spiritual experiences, all equally as beautiful, and all coming with their own unique lessons to learn.

Jewels’ Bio: Jewels Maloney was a Mentor at Atlantic University for the Masters in Transpersonal Psychology program and the Certificate in Spiritual Guidance and Mentoring. Her passion was pure gnosis - intuitive inner connection with Creator and Creation in all forms of life, especially here and now on our magnificent Gaia/Mother Earth. And her greatest passion these days was simply BEing in nature. In the past, Jewels received a Masters and Doctorate in Creativity, worked with young children, founded two nature-based schools, and mentored Early Childhood and Elementary teachers in training in Massachusetts and Montana. She moved to Sedona, AZ in 2003 and for 20 years was involved with taking people out in the red rocks and vortex energy areas, and doing healing work, emotional release work, and spiritual readings.

The news about your passing comes as a surprise and a shock to me and I am grieving today. But I am so grateful that in our last conversation I was able to convey to you just how important you were to me. You changed my life in beautiful and amazing ways and your work continues to inspire me. Your podcast interview will be airing very soon now, and I am so humbled to be able to share your light with the world, one more time, even after your passing. <3

I would look forward to classes with you every week and made sure to sign up for all the classes that you were teaching because you were a channel for love, and you understood what this human existence thing is really about. Thank you for bringing so many lifelines into my world, for being so supportive during the time when I needed it most, and for being a huge catalyst in my journey of peeling back the layers and learning to be brave enough to be who I really am.
