This week we go in a totally new direction: we discuss not a song, not an album, not even an artist, but a BOOK that was a gateway to country music. Of all things, it was the Reader's Digest Country and Western Songbook that helped this week's guest, comedian Zac Maas, discover his love of country music.
We're back! And for the month of September we are doing something special—a series of episodes about concept albums that we are calling CONCEPTEMBER! First we are digging one of Willie Nelson's best albums (if not his absolute best) which came out 50 years ago this year, Phases and Stages, a concept album about divorce and how both sides of the couple experience it differently.
This week Danny and Tyler are joined by comedian Nick Pupo (@Nickpupo, The Only Horror Movie Podcast) to discuss the incredible music and hard life of Ted Hawkins. Hawkins cannot be pinned down to one genre—he effortlessly switches between folk, blues, soul, gospel, and country—but we highlight one of his most-country tunes, "Happy Hour," and add it to our public playlist.

Chris Canterbury, our first-non comedian guest, is a singer-songwriter in Nashville by way of his native Louisiana. Canterbury's new album is Quaalude Lullabies, a nine track collection of mostly sad songs that offers on-the-nose lyrical phrasing, subtlety loose production, and an honest insight into razor-edge topics like addiction, depression, and loneliness. Danny and Tyler both highly recommend this new album!

It was not an easy task narrowing down which of Cash's many excellent songs would be the first of his to add to our Ultimate Country Music Playlist (TM), but we decided to go with his recording of "Folsom Prison Blues" from his legendary live album, At Folsom Prison. We discuss how "Folsom Prison Blues," one of his earliest songs, became an enduring statement of his empathy for the incarcerated throughout his career. This week Danny and Tyler chat about country-rock pioneers, The Flying Burrito Brothers with standup, author, and drummer, Sam Tallent! (@SamTallent, Running the Light, Chubby Behemoth Podcast)
Sam talks to the boys about the lyrical versatility of “Sin City”, FBB’s traceable influence on artists like The Eagles, Orville Peck, and The Flaming Lips, and why he should have played football for Harvard. “Sin City,” a semi-apocalyptic semi-waltz that happens to be the Flying Burrito Brothers’ signature song, is from the group’s 1969 debut album (an album which somehow has still not sold enough to be certified gold, despite its influence).
Call it “Cosmic American Music” or call it “Country with a better backbeat,” but thanks to Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman’s infusion of psychedelic rock and blues (with some help from Sneaky Pete!), we have some of the most enduring country songs ever recorded.

This week we're a day late (and probably a dollar short too), and so discussing the ramblin', hard-workin', hard-timin' Charley Crockett seems to make a lot of sense. Crockett is one of the most prolific and beloved artists currently working in the folk/country/Americana/etc. world, and though narrowing down a song was hard, we landed adding his soulful, funky, swampy ditty "I'm Just a Clown" to our Ultimate Country Playlist.
We'll admit: including this song on our podcast and playlist is almost TOO obvious. But we'd be remiss not to include this timeless crossover hit from the singular and phenomenal Patsy Cline, so "Crazy" is the song of the week!
You've almost certainly heard this song before, but it's such a *classic* that one might forget that it is in fact a *country* song. Danny and Tyler talk about Patsy's short but influential recording career, how she became a crossover hitmaker, her famous confidence, Willie Nelson's possible inspiration when writing "Crazy," and Patsy's tragic passing.

And they’re joined by fellow comedian, banjo player, and Sturgill fan, Eli Coyote Mandel (@elicoyote, SNL, Search Party)! Eli breaks down the Pete Seeger to John Prine to Sturgill Simpson pipeline, and how he went from hating country to loving it. The boys talk about Sturgill’s excellent storytelling, his rise to country stardom, and his refusal to stick to any one genre. We’re confident that if you’re a fan of folksy goodheartedness and/or fiery guitar licks you’re gonna like Sturgill.

RIP to Hargus "Pig" Robbins (January 18, 1938 - January 30, 2022), who was mentioned in this episode (recorded in fall 2021). The Hall of Famer played not only with Sturgill Simpson, but with Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, and just about everybody else. One of the best pianists of any genre.
