45. Love, Loss, and Faith: How Grief, a Cancer Scare, and a Spiritual Journey Transformed My Life 09 Jun 202600:52:03

Season 2 is here and I am starting it with the episode I have needed to record for a long time.

The last few years have been the hardest of my life. My sister died of triple negative breast cancer at 31, I faced my own cancer scares, I went through toxic mold exposure and PTSD, and somewhere in the middle of all of it, I found my way back to faith.

In this solo episode, I walk you through all of it honestly: the mammogram callback that started a two-year testing spiral, why I stopped circulating tumor cell screening, what EMDR did for my nervous system that nothing else could, and how Dr. Joe Dispenza meditations and clarigenic medicine gave me back a relationship with something greater than myself.

I also talk about my daughter Elle and the bullying that quietly dismantled her confidence, and the school change that gave her back to me in less than a week.

And I share what is coming: a revised The Autoimmune Solution™ with new sections on trauma, COVID, and long COVID; a new website; and the Dr. Myers Inner Circle.

I have missed you. I am back. And I have a lot left to do.

The Myers Way Episode 34: Hormones with Dr. Bethany Hays01 Apr 201400:58:43

[Originally published on April 1st, 2014] Dr. Hays has practiced obstetrics and gynecology, and now Functional Medicine, over a career lasting 32 years. In describing the focus of her career at present – she said: “I went into medicine to help people be healthier, but what I found in medicine was a system that was as sick as the people it was treating. Ultimately I realized that my calling was to heal the system as well as the patients. I have three areas that I feel are important enough to put my time, energy and monetary resources into. They are:

  • creating a model for integrative care that treats illness upstream before it requires drugs and surgery
  • finding better ways to train physicians
  • providing better end of life care, essentially, learning to die better

Her practice includes: comprehensive women’s health care, Functional Medicine, non-surgical gynecology and mine-body medicine. Dr. Hays is a founding member of True North.

41. Healing Through Hardship: My Experience with Toxic Mold Exposure, PTSD, and a Cancer Scare16 Dec 202400:43:14

I am excited to say that I have wrapped up season 1 of my Take Back Your Health™ podcast. For the last episode of the season, I have finally recorded my first solo cast. This is not just any solo cast. This is so personal and vulnerable for me—I literally bared it all in this episode. I share what ups and downs I have been through over the last three years and, most importantly, a big health scare. I hold back tears (for the most part) as I describe almost being diagnosed with cancer and all of the very outside-the-box treatments I tried to finally get the all clear.

As the season comes to a close I want to thank you all for listening and let you know how very much I appreciate all of your support. I love what I do, and if I’m being honest, so much has transpired in my personal life. I’m finding it challenging to envision a season 2. It can be tough to publish a podcast episode every week. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the effort it takes to work on my podcast, and weighing whether to keep going. So, I want to hear from you! If my podcast has helped you in any way and you would like to hear a season 2, please let me know. Regardless of what the future holds, I cannot thank you enough for joining me on this journey to Take Back Your Health™.

37. How Habitat Optimizing Plasma Exchange Could Change Future Brain Health w/ Dr. David Haase25 Nov 202401:01:50

While cleaning up your closet can clear your mind, cleaning up your cellular habitat can change your life. This week, I'm joined by Dr. David Haase, who specializes in integrative holistic medicine and is the founder of the Maxwell Clinic in Tennessee. We sat down to discuss neurofeedback, diagnosing head injuries, and how plasma exchange (aka "an oil change" for cells) can help optimize your brain health and enhance your well-being in the long run.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • The Science of Brain Injuries: "When the brain gets injured, the blood vessels get damaged… You no longer have the amount of vascular supply to the neurons," says Dr. Haase, adding that around 80% of people suffer from a "meaningful head injury." Fortunately, an isolated injury doesn't necessarily mean your entire brain is hurt.
  • What Is Neurofeedback: "Neurofeedback is a way of retraining the brain to be more electrically efficient," says Dr. Haase. This brain training, which involves measuring the electricity coming off your scalp, shows how your brain reacts to certain stimuli. This feedback can help train the brain to adjust its learning pattern naturally, thus improving focus, mood, migraines, and seizures.
  • Why Habitat-Optimizing Plasma Exchange Is a Game Changer: Dr. Haase is a pioneer of Habitat-Optimizing Plasma Exchange (HOPE), an intravenous treatment that cleans and replaces your plasma to improve your cellular habitat. "This process of 'oil change' for the blood decreases the rate at which Alzheimer's proceeds by over 60%," he says of the highly individualized method.

33. Rewire Your Brain for Happiness: Mindfulness & Self-Compassion with Dr. Shauna Shapiro07 Oct 202400:52:03

Being kind and self-compassionate may be the key to a more fulfilling life. So, how can you make it a constant in your life? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Shauna Shapiro, a clinical psychologist and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and self-compassion. We sat down to discuss the true meaning of mindfulness, what being kind does to your brain, and how to successfully introduce meditation to your daily routine.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Kindness Shifts Your Neurochemistry: Practicing self-compassion and kindness greatly benefits your mental fitness. According to Dr. Shapiro, being kind to yourself "literally turns on the learning centers of the brain." This signals the brain to release oxytocin, which helps to settle the nervous system, and dopamine, which "is this neuromodulator of motivation and learning."
  • Mindfulness vs Meditation: While sometimes used interchangeably, mindfulness and meditation are not the same. "Mindfulness is a way of being," says Dr. Shapiro, adding that to be mindful is to be present in the moment and with yourself. "Meditation is the exercise."
  • Why Progress Matters More Than Perfection: In short, perfection is not attainable, sustainable, or something to strive for. "Perfection is the antithesis of evolution. Perfection means I'm done. That's not the goal," shares Dr. Shapiro. "And so when I make a mistake, instead of beating myself up, it's like, how can I learn? How can I grow? And you're cheering for yourself instead of kicking yourself when you're already down."
  • How to Start Your Meditation Journey: Instead of setting a lofty goal, start with meditating five minutes a day for five days, morning or night. It may feel difficult in the beginning, but the benefits are worth it, says Dr. Shapiro: "It shifts our relationship with ourselves, our relationship with the world, how we perceive things."

35. Medicinal Fungi: The Key to Reducing Inflammation and Boosting Immunity with Dr. Robert Rountree21 Oct 202400:58:23

What you eat and drink determines how you feel—and can inform your ability to develop or ward off chronic disease. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Robert Rountree, a leading expert in integrative and personalized medicine. We sat down to discuss how an inflammatory diet is linked to chronic disease, the health benefits of medicinal fungi, and which types you should start incorporating into your daily wellness routine.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • The Role of Inflammation in Chronic Diseases: If you regularly consume inflammatory foods and beverages (think: high-sugar, high-carb, and overly processed), you run the risk of setting inflammation in the body in motion, says Dr. Rountree, adding, "The problem is, it doesn't always turn off." And inflammation is the precursor to virtually all chronic diseases.
  • The Power of Medicinal Fungi: Training your immune system is possible, according to Dr. Rountree, and medicinal fungi can help strengthen it to combat a wide range of infections. "The first rule is to eat as many of the ones you like as you can," he shares, citing lion's mane, shiitake, oyster, and king trumpet as the best mushrooms to cook with.
  • Mushroom Varieties and Their Benefits: Different mushrooms have different benefits. Cordyceps can help with adrenal and kidney support, reishi is known as "the elixir of immortality" can help support stamina, while coriolus (also known as turkey tail) can help combat cancer. Go ahead and have your pick of the harvest—you can't go wrong with any of them.

34. The Power of EMDR therapy: Overcoming Trauma and Anxiety with Ginger Poag14 Oct 202400:48:23

When it comes to experiencing a traumatic event, overcoming its rippling effects can feel overwhelming—like there's no end in sight. EMDR is here to change that. This week, I'm joined by Ginger Poag, a clinical psychotherapist and trauma counselor specializing in EMDR therapy. We sat down to discuss how EMDR works, the effects this modality has on the brain, and why those with anxiety, trauma, and PTSD may benefit the most from it.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • What Is EMDR: An acronym for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, EMDR therapy "allows us to get into the limbic system of the brain where traumas are stored,” shares Poag.
  • How EMDR Works: EMDR helps you reprocess traumatic events through bilateral movements using eye movements, hand tappers, or sound. This is important because "on a subconscious level, what we do today is being affected by the trauma still stored and unprocessed," says Poag. Introducing a positive belief ("I can overcome anything") can also be done during your session.
  • EMDR vs Talk Therapy: While talk therapy is always an option, Poag says it can feel limiting to someone with a history of trauma. "I feel like there's a form of narrative therapy where you keep telling your story over and over again, and it can be more traumatizing to the client," she shares, adding, "What I like about EMDR so much is that I don’t need to know every little detail. All of the work is happening in your brain."
  • Ketamine Can Help Access Emotions: Reserved for people who are having a hard time accessing certain memories or those hitting a plateau, using a small dose of ketamine—administered by a clinician—can prove helpful during EMDR sessions. "It's been so effective, and we're able to process through so much at an even quicker rate with the ketamine," says Poag.

32. Trauma & Mitochondria: Reversing Chronic Illness at the Cellular Level with Dr. Susan Blum30 Sep 202401:03:45

Stress and trauma will always hold power over you and your overall health—unless you face the problem at the cellular level. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Blum, a board-certified physician specializing in preventative medicine, functional medicine, and integrative medicine. We sat down to discuss the critical role of mitochondria on your health, the impact of environmental toxins, infections, and trauma on these cellular powerhouses, and integrative approaches to healing.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • What Exactly Are Mitochondria: As vital organelles found in cells—most notably in the brain, muscles, and heart—mitochondria are "the little furnace inside every cell that makes your energy called ATP," describes Dr. Blum.
  • The Link Between Trauma and Mitochondrial Health: Stress and trauma can cause the cell to enter the cell danger response, says Dr. Blum. This, in turn, damages the mitochondria by blocking their ability to function properly. This can result in brain fog, fatigue, and even chronic illness.
  • How to Treat the Root Cause: Dr. Blum stresses the importance of “cleaning up your environment“ as your first step, which can include testing your home for health-disrupting mold or figuring out what triggers you physically and emotionally. Next steps may include going to therapy, filtering your water, and prioritizing deep, restorative sleep since "your mitochondria repair at night," says Dr. Blum.
  • The Healing Power of Ketamine: Under the supervision of a trained professional, IV ketamine can safely take the healing process to the next level when paired with therapy. "Most people's experience is there's this deep meditation space of quiet behind their thoughts without needing to meditate almost," shares Dr. Blum.

14. A New Way of Eating: Nutrient Density (with Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD)27 May 202401:09:59

This week I welcomed Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD on my show to talk about the power of nutrient density through the lens of her new book, Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat. Nutrivore is the revolutionary yet simple dietary concept: get all the nutrients our bodies need from the foods we eat. To Dr. Sarah, Nutrivore represents a completely new way to think about foods. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad”, Nutrivore looks at the overall quality of the whole diet.

In our conversation, we explore the fascinating Nutrivore scores and how they serve as a compass for optimizing our food choices and meal planning. Dr. Sarah shares insights from her transition from medical research to health advocacy, underlining the importance of nutrient density, debunking dietary myths, and proposing a balanced, informed way of living. Additionally, she unveils a surprising, evidence-based update on mercury levels in tuna and Atlantic salmon.

Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD is the founder of Nutrivore.com and New York Times best-selling author of Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat, which was released on May 14th. Grounded in scientific rigor and free from rigid dogma, Nutrivore prioritizes nourishment over judgment, making it accessible to all.

7. Easing Eco-Anxiety Through Joyful Daily Action with Heather White08 Apr 202400:50:14

This week, I welcomed Heather White on my show to discuss the impacts of climate change on mental health and share actionable advice for living more sustainably. In addition to having decades of experience in environmental advocacy, Heather is also a mom of two and is driven by her own children’s deep concern about the future. She shared a staggering statistic from a recent global study of 10,000 young people (ages 16-25): 47% of respondents said climate anxiety interfered with their daily life.

Though it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, Heather’s goal is to empower individuals to take meaningful and joyful daily actions to ease eco-anxiety. Drawing from her wealth of experience, she shares actionable advice aimed at fostering a more eco-conscious and health-oriented lifestyle. We explore a range of topics, from the importance of deciphering product labels to practical strategies for reducing food waste. Heather underscores the significance of everyday choices, whether it's opting for safer personal care products, environmentally-friendly cleaning agents, or embracing sustainable fashion.

Heather White is an author, speaker, consultant, and expert in environmental health, green living, and eco-anxiety, the mental health impacts of the climate crisis. She is also founder of the nonprofit OneGreenThing.org. White's two decades of experience include serving as presidential campaign staffer to Al Gore, as the environmental counsel to a US senator, and as the executive director to three national environmental nonprofits, including EWG (Environmental Working Group). Her new book, 60 Days to a Greener Life, will be released nationwide next Tuesday, April 9th.

38. The Inflammation Epidemic: How to Heal Your Body From the Inside Out with Dr. Will Cole02 Dec 202400:55:11

Looking inward is the first step to enhancing your overall health, from putting gluten sensitivities at bay to keeping autoimmune flare-ups dormant. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Will Cole, a leading functional medicine expert and dear friend. We sat down to discuss why some people are more sensitive to inflammatory foods and environmental toxins, the role of trauma in autoimmunity, and the importance of spending time in nature.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why Every Body Is Different: Have you noticed how certain people can eat inflammatory foods or live among mold with no side effects? Turns out, this resilience comes down to genes. "The more gene variants you have makes your body slower at detoxing, slower at methylating, more prone to being sensitive to an environmental toxin, a virus or a mold, chronic stress, or trauma,"
  • What Contributes to Inflammation: The way food is grown and processed has an effect on well-being. "We're seeing food reactions that 15 years ago we weren't having," says Dr. Cole. "And I think every few years, we're seeing people with more sensitive systems. So it's not the food's fault per se. It's what we've done to the food supply and what we've done to the human microbiome."
  • Find the Right Diet for You: "Don't focus on all the things you 'can't have,' but you can have whatever you want," says Dr. Cole, who recommends making hearty, easy-to-digest stews and soups if you're looking for soothing, gut-friendly recipes. " I want to shift someone's mindset away from this sort of dieting culture to 'I love my body enough to nourish it with things that love me back.'"
  • The Link between Trauma and Autoimmunity: While environmental toxins and microbiome health can result in autoimmune issues, so can psychological trauma. "The higher one's ACE (Adverse Childhood Events or Experiences) score, the more likely that that's a component to things like autoimmune conditions and metabolic issues,"

42. From Diagnosis to Thriving: How Taylor Dukes Chose Integrative Medicine to Heal Brain Cancer10 Feb 202500:48:58

A free way to support your cancer treatment? Shifting your mindset and finding the positives in life. This week, I'm joined by Taylor Dukes, a family nurse practitioner, mother of two, and former colleague. We sat down to discuss her cancer journey—from finding out she had a brain tumor to entering remission—what she's learned in the years since her initial diagnosis, and how reframing her mindset helped her thrive.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Integrative Approaches to Cancer Treatment: When doctors found a brain tumor in Dukes' right frontal lobe, the mother of two didn't jump straight into surgery. Instead, she implemented a lot of integrative therapies such as coffee enemas, hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy, wearing a red light helmet, and more. "In the five months between when I got diagnosed and when I actually had surgery, we were able to shrink the brain tumor in half," says Duke."
  • The Power of Positive Thinking: Dukes, who currently has "no evidence of disease," believes that as long as you’re breathing, there is always hope and there are always options. "No diagnosis, no test, no statistic has the ability to figure out the number of your days," says Dukes, who credits prayer and meditation for her mindset. "Your mind is powerful and what you believe is so, so powerful."
  • Maintaining Your Health After Cancer: Two years after her diagnosis, Dukes is now in maintenance mode and focuses on getting her immune system back on track. She keeps up with regular fasting, eats a lower-carb diet, and alternates between red light therapy, ozone therapy, and sauna. “I'm starting specific therapies to target the co-infections and Lyme markers I have,” she says.

39. The Terrain Approach to Cancer: Dr. Nasha Winters on Revolutionizing Integrative Oncology09 Dec 202401:04:28

When it comes to cancer care—from the specific diet you follow to the type of treatment you subject your body to—quality intervention is key. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Nasha Winters, an integrative oncologist and cancer "thriver" (she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer at age 19), who is pioneering the future of cancer care. We sat down to discuss the root cause of the illness, the importance of doing a self-audit of your home and habits, and why there is a time and a place for conventional cancer care.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Cancer Goes Beyond Genetics: Cancer was originally believed to be genetic, but recent research demonstrates that it's a metabolic disease. A common denominator among cancer cells is that they all have very damaged mitochondria (known as the powerhouse of the cell), shares Dr. Winters.
  • Why a Self-Audit Is a Non-Negotiable: An easy first step to change your terrain is knowing what you’re putting on, in, and around your body. This can be anything from skincare products and kitchen utensils to water filtration systems and air fresheners. "The more we're exposed to at a younger age, the more our nervous systems, our immune systems, and our metabolic systems are wired differently to make us more vulnerable to disease in general and cancer in particular," says Dr. Winters. Making small lifestyle changes can lead to a big, sustainable impact.
  • Blending Two Types of Care Is Vital: Despite her lifelong mission to educate patients and practitioners on the transformative benefits of integrative medicine, Dr. Winters isn't here to villainize conventional cancer treatments. She does, however, stress the importance of marrying the two—based on your individual needs and diagnosis.

43. Unlocking Peak Health: The Healing Power of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy with Dr. Scott Sherr24 Feb 202501:05:48

Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have long been used for acute issues such as strokes and brain injuries—but can they be used for chronic conditions as well? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Scott Sherr, an internal medicine physician certified in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We sat down to discuss what makes this chamber "a wound healer from the inside out" as well as the proper protocols one should follow before even considering oxygen therapy for chronic issues.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): As soon as you step into the hyperbaric chamber, your body works to reoxygenate the cells in low-oxygen tissue.
  • Having a Healthy Foundation Is Key "You want to get some of that foundational stuff working before you start stressing the system with oxygen," says Dr. Sherr.
  • HBOT's Role In Cancer Treatment: Dr. Sherr uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in conjunction with other interventions, such as vitamin C IVs and a ketogenic diet, as a way to support and sensitize people for chemotherapy and radiation
  • What Methylene Blue Does: In terms of supplemental support, Dr. Sherr turns to methylene blue, which helps optimize the mitochondria, while promoting detoxification at the same time

31. Neuroscience-Based Writing Practices to Rewire Your Brain from Trauma w/ Donna Jackson Nakazawa23 Sep 202400:57:23

Do deep, vulnerable conversations overwhelm you? According to Donna Jackson Nakazawa, sharing your story is essential to healing. This week, I'm joined by the award-winning science journalist and author of The Adverse Childhood Experiences Guided Journal. We sat down to discuss how your childhood shapes your present, why revisiting key moments from your past is imperative to healing, and how writing through it all can leave a lasting impact on your mental and physical health.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Childhood Trauma Can Lead to Illness Down the Road: Nakazawa cites a study that found women who've experienced three or more adverse childhood experiences were not only 60% more likely to have an autoimmune disease, but to also be hospitalized with one in adulthood.
  • The Power of Writing: 30 years of research support the power writing has on well-being. "Writing is a very powerful way to get old beliefs out of the brain to discharge trauma and to begin to rewire and refire the brain," says Nakazawa.
  • Why Daily Journaling Is the Goal: For a sustainable, safe approach to answering the thought-provoking prompts in Nakazawa's guided journal, the author recommends starting with 20 minutes daily, four days per week. According to a study, doing so "is linked to fewer doctor’s visits and greater immune function," she says.
  • Faster Is Not Always Better: Take baby steps when starting out. Be gentle with yourself as you tap into your most vulnerable self. Be expressive with your writing—don't overthink!—and keep your pencil moving quickly.

36. Learn How to Breathe and Align Your Body to Build Strength with Aaron Alexander, CR, LMT28 Oct 202400:57:39

Did you know how you move and breathe is tied to your strength and longevity? This week, I'm joined by Aaron Alexander, a pioneering movement coach, author, and creator of The Align Method. We sat down to discuss the importance of proper breathing, functional movement, the best ways to align your body, and why everyone should "redevelop a relationship to the ground."

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why You Should Pay Attention to Your Breathing: Compared to breathing in through your mouth, breathing in through your nose reigns supreme. Doing the latter helps you take advantage of filtration, additional nitric oxide (allowing for oxygen to flow to vital organs), and humidification. "Your nose is preparing the air for your lungs and the rest of your body every time you breathe," says Alexander. "It's like passing through the processing plant."
  • Spending Time on the Floor Has Its Health Benefits: Challenge yourself to sit on the floor for 30 minutes each day, whether that means watching TV on your living room floor or eating dinner at your coffee table. Why? This simple act benefits your mobility, setting you up for healthier aging in the long run, and your digestion.
  • Everything in Life Is Fitness: Think outside the gym, shares The Align Method creator. "Fitness is not a thing that you do, but fitness is who you are as a person," he says, adding that using your visual, breathing, and postural muscles all count as fitness. "You're always in a place of training yourself," shares Alexander. "Every moment throughout your day is an opportunity to heal your body a little bit more."
