53. Creating What Women Want with Joanne Cloak, Founder & CEO of Jofit03 Jul 202300:40:35

I sit down with Joanne Cloak, CEO and founder of the golfwear brand JoFit. With her unique perspective as a former model, phys ed teacher, and lifelong athlete, Joanne takes us through her journey from grappling with ill-fitting clothes to starting her own brand that champions comfort, fit, and style.

Joanne unveils the backstory of JoFit, recounting how she drove up and down the East and West Coast, trying to sell her brand to pro shops. She shares how she maneuvered through the challenges of scaling her business, managing cash flow, and pre-booking orders.

We also deep dive into Joanne's design ethos, emphasizing the importance of details, patterns, and sizing strategies. She shares why long-sleeve sun shirts are her go-to and how she ensures styles to fit all body types. We explore her wide waistband design aimed at comfort and inclusivity. Lastly, we provide a sneak peek at the exciting JoFit designs planned for Fall 2024.

Key Highlights

·      Joanne took matters into her own hands when she realized the lack of good-fitting clothes available for women, especially in the golf apparel industry. Her brand prioritizes comfort, fit, and style, with a keen eye for details like pocket size and armhole fit.

·      Selling to pro shops wasn't easy. Joanne had to rely on her samples and the feedback of women in the shop to get her brand off the ground. She soon realized that the key to success was pre-booking orders so she could afford the production. With 26 reps and booming orders, Joanne found herself in a promising yet tricky cash flow situation.

·      She realized that as sizes increase, the grading needs to be adjusted differently for areas like the bust and belly. This feedback led to alterations in the grading process to accommodate these changes.

·      Joanne's story also highlights the importance of inclusivity in the fashion industry, particularly in sports apparel. Her focus on creating clothes that cater to all body types and her dedication to improving the fit and comfort of her clothes based on customer feedback demonstrate a commitment to creating a brand that truly serves its customers.

49. Overcoming Fear and Having Your Worst Round Ever with Michael Leonard19 Jun 202301:02:09

Tara and I sit down with Michael Leonard, host of the Wicked Smart Golf Podcast, to discuss his journey from novice golfer to competitor in US Open qualifiers and how he rekindled his love for the sport. Michael's enthusiasm is infectious, and it was a joy to reminisce about our own experiences playing college golf and how it shaped us both on and off the green.

During our conversation, we shared stories about unforgettable golf vacations, like Michael's family trip to Pebble Beach where he played three times a day and managed to shoot an impressive 79 at Pebble and 73 at Spyglass. We also delved into the impact of the new NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) rules on college athletes and offered advice for younger players looking to pursue a career in college golf.

Fear is a hurdle all golfers have to overcome more than once in their career. Through the example of one of the worst rounds Michael has ever played, we explored how to navigate the emotional roller coaster that comes along with playing competitively. We discussed the importance of a solid pre-shot routine, positive self-talk, and remaining present on the course to improve our mental game.

48. Prevention & Recovery of the Most Common Golf Injuries with Dr. Audra Lance15 Jun 202300:29:15

Today, I’m sitting down with Dr. Audra Lance, a leading sports and non-surgical injury specialist, who gives her best strategies on reducing the risk of injury or recovering from one.

Listen in as Dr. Audra shares her valuable insights into understanding the root cause of common sports injuries such as tennis elbow, rather than simply stifling the pain with a temporary band-aid solution.

We cover the fundamental role of breathing and thoracic spine mobility for golfers, as well as how loading the joints can prevent bone and muscle deterioration, and how modifying yoga poses can aid in injury prevention and recovery.

 Key Highlights

·      Recovering from an inflamed elbow from repeated golf swings, without taking time away from playing the sport, is possible with a little planning. For example, instead of playing 18 holes, go to the driving range and do 15 minutes of swing practice. Holistic, deliberate movement, combined with purposeful breathing, can serve as your “tylenol”, helping you heal from your injury faster.

·      The importance of breathing when it comes to preventing and treating lower back pain is essential. Nasal breathing can help access your diaphragm and pelvic floor, not only to help release tension almost immediately, but to help you perform better out on the golf course!

·      We explore how strength training and yoga can help prevent and treat neck pain, headaches, jaw pain, and shoulder blade pain. We emphasize the importance of loading the joints to prevent bone and muscle deterioration, and how modifications to yoga poses can help with injury prevention and recovery.

·      We look at how examining the feet can help diagnose and treat an injury, and how adding different components of movement to your routine can help maintain health and prevent pain.

45. The Show About Expectations with Jon Sherman05 Jun 202301:06:14

Today, I’m joined by Jon Sherman, author of The Four Foundations of Golf, and creator of the Four Foundations Masterclass based on the book.

Jon shares a powerful story about playing golf with his father in Florida, which served as the catalyst for the four foundations concept and emphasizes the importance of aligning expectations with the reality of our abilities in the game.

The concept of managing expectations on the golf course is something that resonated deeply with both of us. Through our conversation, Jon and I explored the delicate balance between competition and enjoyment in golf, and how adjusting expectations can lead to a more satisfying experience on the course.

Jon and I delve into the crucial role that practice and feedback play in improving golf performance. Drawing from his own experiences and insights, Jon shared tips on how to strike the right balance between practice and play, and how to manage expectations with the two thirds rule and the PGA Tour Fallacy.

Sign up for The Four Foundations of Golf Masterclass at www.fourfoundationsofgolf.com/masterclass!

 Key Highlights

  • Many players approach golf with an all-or-nothing mentality, basing their skill level on the success or failure they experience directly in front of them. Throw away this mindset. One of the greatest indicators of growth in the game of golf is incremental progress.
  • Golf shots can be divided into three phases: tee shots, approach shots, and finesse shots. Virtually no golfer can nail all three shots above average in one game. Focus on getting at least one of these three shots right to take the pressure off of yourself and build your resolve.
  • The PGA Tour Fallacy is when a golfer overestimates the ability of a PGA Tour player based on the highlight reel they see on TV. Temper your expectations for yourself by realizing that the best golfers in the world are nowhere near as flawless as the media makes them out to be.
  • Find the right balance between practice and play for you. Think of playing as a form of practice, and that you can learn from the experience.
  • Sometimes shooting your best score ever can be bittersweet. No matter how good you get at this game, there's a Jekyll and Hyde side to you, and the low-mid single-digit handicap is one of the most tortured golfers.

44. Listener Questions, an Alabama Golf Trip and Being a Cop with Kim Eaton01 Jun 202300:55:06

Today, I’m sitting down with Kim and Pat to share some exciting news, including our upcoming Dallas Shootout (head over to www.dallasshootout.com to sign up!) and retreats in Ireland and Scotland.

We also have one more single occupancy spot at the five-star Ireland 2023 Retreat, so grab it while you can. Plus, we'll give you a sneak peek at our plans for the Desert Classic in 2024.

Despite a challenging course and an underperforming driver, she managed to recover and even shoot par on the front nine.

Finally, we wrap up with some golf talk and a listener question about Kim's waggle and how to develop your own pre-shot routine. Plus, join us for a trip down memory lane as Kim reflects on her time as a police officer in the 80s and her transition back into the golf business.

138. Taking on Course Management to Break 80 this Summer with Scott Fawcett of Decade Golf (Part 2)24 Jun 202400:49:21

I’m back with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to get the ins-and-outs of his unique approach to breaking 80 this summer!

This time, we’re really getting into the weeds of course management strategy. Scott highlights the limitations of traditional stat tracking and the benefits of focusing on metrics that truly reflect your game, while examining the relationship between putting and overall scoring.

We discuss the power of keeping a “mental scorecard” and why it’s so important to have a clear intention for each shot. For golfers averaging scores in the high 80s, tracking meaningful metrics like greens in regulation and redefining what constitutes a successful tee shot can lead to performance optimization.

We dive into distance measurement next. Get Scott’s expert insights on using launch monitors with your specific golf ball to pinpoint true iron distances and eliminate outliers. Learn how PGA pros like Aaron Wise use this data to make strategic adjustments, leading to more consistent, reliable shots.

Finally, we’re exploring how speed training systems like the Rypstick and TheStack can take your swing speed to new heights!

43. Inside the Business of Growing the Game with Abby Liebenthal29 May 202300:45:15

Today I sit down with Abby Liebenthal, Founder and President of Fore the Ladies, a nonprofit on a mission to introduce more women to the game of golf.

Abby shares her experience hosting 70 clinics and other events under the Fore the Ladies banner every year, particularly the third annual The Lily Golf Getaway held at Pinehurst Resort.

She also discusses her Intro to Golf series, breaking down what participants can expect out of the event from start to finish. Finally, Abby explains how players at different levels of skill can choose the right event they need to take their golf game to the next stage.

 Key Highlights

·      The lineup of golf events to be hosted in 2023 by Fore the Ladies total 70 so far! These range from golf clinics to Happy Hour events.

·      Abby shares why she’s recently decided to host more events on actual golf courses rather than in indoor facilities, explaining that playing the game out on the course makes newer players more likely to play for the long haul.

·      Fore the Ladies is planning international events, starting with Scotland. Abby shares whats in the pipeline for 2024, including their itinerary for Ireland!

·      Every opportunity that comes our way is exciting, but with each new opportunity we take on, we need to dedicate a chunk of our day to it. Abby reminds us to never forget that self-care is just as important to our success as the time and energy we put in to achieve that success.

42. Doing Golf Differently with Haley Bookholdt25 May 202300:53:48

Tori sits down with social media influencer Haley Bookholdt.

She began her golf journey at nine years old during the 2008 recession. Her father, an avid golfer himself, encouraged Haley to pursue their shared passion. In 2017, she had the opportunity to attend Elon University on a golf scholarship.

Listen in as Haley talks about the mental and emotional challenges that came with her role as a college athlete, as well as the frustrating experience of transitioning to recreational golf later on.

Haley shares her experience as an influencer on Instagram and TikTok, and how she overcame the pressures of pleasing her male followers to display her authentic self on social media, which is to be a model for fellow female golfers.

Finally, Haley talks about the future of women’s golf in our male-dominated space, and why she believes that true representation can only be achieved when more women “claim the game as their own”.

 Key Highlights

  • As golf rounds become longer and longer, it’s become more important to find a purpose in every game to maintain your enjoyment in the sport, whether it’s for competition or simply a mode of relaxation.
  • Haley shares her social media journey, how she built a brand on her own terms (and not based on what others, especially men, thought of her), and her future plans.
  • The male-dominated golf world will only become more inclusive when women claim the game as their own.
  • If you want to progress as a golfer, embrace humility; otherwise, your athletic development will only slow down.

41. How Knowing Your Enneagram Type Can Help Improve Your Golf Game with Tracy O'Malley22 May 202301:08:51

Tracy sits down with Tracy O'Malley, world-renowned Master Performance, Business consultant, and Expert Enneagram Coach.

Listen in as she discusses the nine Enneagram types and how to use knowledge of your “soul blueprint” as a compass for making sense of the gaps in your golf game.

According to Tracy, getting in the reps is a foundational principle for all golfers, but that has to be complemented by breaking down the mental and emotional barriers that get in the way of growth. By knowing your Enneagram type, you’ll know how to do just that!

 Key Highlights

·      Type 1s, the perfectionists, need to avoid making absolute statements (ex. I’m good/bad) and consider the gray areas. We miss the miracles when we fall back on black-and-white thinking.

·      Type 2s, the helpers, have to learn to ask for what they want and need. By putting your own oxygen mask first, you can offer much more help afterwards.

·      Type 3s, the hustlers, easily experience burnout. Being “the best” doesn’t necessarily trace back to something measurable, so slow down and enjoy the journey, the experience.

·      Type 4s, the romantics, could do with more structure. Creativity and expressiveness is great, but having a plan of action is the way to take your game to the next level.

·      Type 5s, the introverts, can get a little too obsessed with the accumulation of knowledge; but, there has to be a moment where you step away from the “how to” YouTube videos and take action.

·      Type 6s, the overthinkers, can get paralyzed by an outcome that has not even transpired yet. They have to learn to let go and have more faith in their game.

·      Type 7s, the master networkers, can end up seeking out fun in order to avoid the hard feelings. They need to visit the “solitude cave” every once in a while to find moments of quiet and create a strategy.

·      Type 8s, the cholerics, can be headstrong and domineering to the point of intimidating others. Consider making the journey from active controller to considerate helper.

·      Type 9s, who always prefer going with the flow, eventually have to take a stand in spite of a constant fear of conflict. Don’t be afraid of using your voice.

40. 5 Keys to Stay Miserable on the Golf Course with The Par Train Dudes18 May 202301:11:48

What a fun episode we have today with Evan Singer and Matt Cermak from The Par Train podcast joining us. We are filling you in on 5 ways you can be miserable on the golf course – this is a must listen!

Key Hightlights:

  • Expecting what you do on the range to happen on the course. A warm-up is just that: a warm-up. Your best swing or putt is an outlier, not an average.
  • Trying to shoot your best score. When was the last time you actually shot your best score when you “tried” to shoot your best score? Don’t reinvent a past victory. Instead, recommit to earn a new victory. That is, don’t look at the finish line. Focus instead on the process—the journey—that will result in a win.
  • Trying to impress others. Since we’re only human, we can’t help but care what others think; but, when we let the opinions of others influence our performance on the golf course, we end up doing worse than if we just put aside that insecurity.
  • Assume you won’t make mistakes. Just because your last round was perfect doesn’t mean this round will be perfect. Golf is a game of recovery.
  • Don’t get too high, and don’t get too low. Take care not to rest on your laurels after every good shot and beat yourself up after every bad shot. If you get too high, you create unnecessary pressure on yourself come the next swing; and if you get too low, you gradually lose the confidence and motivation to go on.

38. Golf Update and Summer Goals with Kim & Tara11 May 202300:53:24

Tori sits down with Kim and Tara to talk about what they expect going into the upcoming Arizona Four-Ball and the Arizona Senior Open. Kim and Tara, who are partnering up for the Four-Ball championship, discuss their game plan and pre-round routine.

Tara then shares her experience going through the P.J. Boatwright Internship Program as a college sophomore and how it affected her golf career going forward. She also talks about her recent drive to once again qualify for the Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship.

Finally, Tori, Kim, and Tara talk about the challenge of getting the 2022 Women’s Mid-Amateur to push through, followed by their goals for the summer.

 Key Highlights

  • When playing with a partner, don’t put pressure on yourself. There are no “sorrys” in partner golf. If one partner makes a mistake at a hole, the other partner is there to close that gap and provide support.
  • Tara explains that caddies don’t necessarily need to know a lot about golf. A newcomer can learn a lot just by spending enough time on the green and staying observant. When scouting out a club, don’t be afraid to ask if anyone’s in need of a caddie, because more often than not, someone’s looking.
  • Golf is an emotional game, and like with any sport, no one likes to lose. Tori reminds us that it’s actually after the greatest losses that the most valuable lessons are learned.
  • It’s okay to be competitive, even among friends. But it’s definitely tough (and often awkward) to compete against friends. That discomfort goes away over time as long as everyone remembers that competition ends when the game ends.

Download the Breaking Bogeys Workbook HERE.

You can also watch the workshop on YouTube HERE.

Justin Klemballa does a deep dive into making better contact with the ground, explaining how to avoid fat shots and train yourself to take a divot in front of the golf ball.

He breaks down the four steps to improving your swing, covering how to shorten your backswing, stay on plane all the way through the swing, and create a mental plan to stay consistent with each and every shot.

 Key Highlights

·      The biggest technical problem golfers struggle with, if they have bad contact, is not realizing where the divot is supposed to be. Your club bottoms out and hits the ground with every golf club in your bag except your driver and your putter. Every other club should hit the ground slightly in front of the ball. Hitting the ground before the ball is called a “fat shot”, and it saps energy that would have otherwise gone into the ball.

·      What causes the ground to be struck behind the ball is when the golfer’s weight is distributed evenly (50/50 on each leg) or their weight is too much on the back foot. Get your weight (around 70-80%) into your left side prior to the moment of impact.

·      The four areas golfers must work on to improve their swing, in order of priority, are: to hit the ball more consistently, to hit the ball straight, and to hit the ball farther.

·      To help shorten your backswing, your body and arms should stop turning at the same time. Eliminate the tendency to continue swinging your arms after your body stops swinging.

34. Using Manifestation to Give Yourself the Mental Edge with Tiffany Carter27 Apr 202300:47:46

Tori sits down with Tiffany Carter, a female empowerment speaker, money-making mentor, and marketing expert.

She’s the founder of ProjectME, a program which taps into the power of manifestation to turn your deepest desires—whether in wealth, love, career, self-worth, travel, or relationships—into reality.

Listen in as Tiffany shares how to apply manifestation to your golf game in three steps. Whether your goal is to break score barriers or get your handicap index down to single digits, you can’t physically train yourself to overcome self-limiting beliefs.

She explains the process of envisioning the end result as regularly and as powerfully as you can until it comes to fruition, as well as how to prevent nervousness and creeping insecurities from sabotaging the process.

Finally, Tiffany, talks about the importance of actually taking action on the things you envision. By showing up for yourself every day, and having a community to uplift you during those inevitable low moments, the Universe will always come through with the things you desire.

 Powerful Quotes by Tiffany

“Manifestation is when the power of visualization meets action meets energy.”

“You can’t out-practice or outplay a broken mindset.”

 Key Highlights

·      Manifestation is all about visualizing a desired outcome and having that desire come into existence. This is a process which starts with the dream. When you combine that dream with the feelings attached to it, igniting all of that with action, you can manifest anything into your life.

·      Almost every top performer in every sport, including golf, works with a mindset coach. They didn’t become the elite of the elite through sheer physical talent and honed skill. They did it by focusing just as equally on the mental game. “The edge,” Tiffany reminds us, “is yourself.”

·      Manifestation isn’t about lying to yourself, saying, “I’m a good putter,” when you know it’s not true. Instead, it’s about expressing the type of golfer you want to be: “My putting is improving.” Make the vision as detailed as possible, down to what you’re wearing.

·      Release your attachments from the past and the future and stick to the present moment. All of your anxieties, fears, and insecurities, which impede manifestation, stem from being unable to focus on the now.

·      Half-measures beget half results. By deliberately taking aligned actions, doing them consistently, and having a support group to cheer you on, the Universe can’t help but make real what you’re putting all of your energies into manifesting day after day.

137. Taking on Course Management to Break 80 this Summer with Scott Fawcett of Decade Golf (Part 1)17 Jun 202400:59:10

In the first of this two-part conversation, I’m sitting down with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to learn his unique approach to playing golf with intention–beyond the swing.

Listen in as Scott shares how the game's evolution places equal weight on both the mental and the physical, drawing parallels between golf and chess. Whether you're a club-level player or an aspiring pro, Scott’s Decade system offers a simplified approach to understanding the complexities of the game, helping you play smarter, not harder.

We then take a deep dive into putting performance, breaking down the concepts of tracking putts and strokes gained. Discover the importance of walking off putt distances and why nailing long putts can dramatically impact your game. Professor Mark Broadie’s strokes gained method offers a nuanced, step-by-step approach that goes beyond just counting total putts.

Scott and I end the first part of our discussion with our thoughts on the types of mental health challenges faced by golfers at all levels. We explore the emotional and psychological strains of the sport, using drawing on our personal experiences to highlight the importance of having a support system to keep you afloat. From Tiger Woods’ legendary mental resilience to the tragic story of Grayson Murray, we’re bringing to the surface the need for more mental health awareness in the golfing community.

33. A Golf Trip Turned Tradition with Oli Bell24 Apr 202300:25:32

Tori sits down with Shannon Mercer, Ashley Ibañez, and, all the way from the UK, Oli Bell.

Oli is a sports broadcaster who specializes in horse racing, while occasionally dabbling in soccer as well as niche sports like snooker and darts. He’s also passionate about golf.

Shannon and Ashley reflect on their 2022 trip to Scotland, where they intended to visit Dumbarnie Links as the first of their lineup of golf courses in the country, and how the Queen’s funeral forced them to postpone that visit.

They went to North Berwick Golf Club and St Andrews Links, finishing at Kingsbarns Golf Links where they met Oli.

Oli also discusses the planning process behind his annual golf trip for his group of twelve, the Bear Fight Invitational. He shares why he thinks the game of golf is not only great for building authentic relationships with like-minded folks, but also for broadening your horizons by traveling to amazing places in different countries.

 Key Highlights

·        Oli’s Bear Fight golf trips have allowed him to maintain genuine friendships amid the glitz and glamor of the world of media he’s constantly immersed in. Tori agrees, saying that golf has been a great way to meet new people and strengthen existing relationships, not to mention travel and discover beautiful new spots around the world.

·        As female golfers, Tori, Shannon, and Ashley probably felt more welcome in the Scottish golf community than in America. There, they didn’t feel like “women golfers” as much as they were simply “golfers”.

31. The Journey of Becoming One of the Top Senior Amateur Players in the Country with Shelly Haywood17 Apr 202301:06:15

Tori and Kim sit down with Shelly Haywood, who discusses how she has been able to successfully balance business ownership with high level amateur golf and became one of the most elite amateur players in the country.

Shelly discusses the highest highs in her storied career, which include winning two national titles, as well as her biggest loss in the form of the 2019 Southern California Senior Women’s Tournament and the priceless lessons that followed.

 Key Moments

?      (15:37) If time is a real issue, focus on quality practice. “I’m lucky if I can play once a week,” says Shelly. She prioritizes her short game over all else.

?      (33:00) Shelly’s first major tournament, the 2019 Southern California Senior Women, was also her first major loss. Being only a year into her pro career, Shelly knew that she simply didn’t have the experience nor the tools to be able to evaluate what went wrong in the moment. She’s since realized that the primary challenge she faced during that tournament was all a mental game, particularly around her self-worth. Her biggest lesson learned? “I am not defined as a person by the score that I shoot.” That the only thing she, as a player, can control is the shot in front of you. “Once that ball leaves the club face, it’s out of your control.”

?      (48:01) When men play good golf, they’re happy. When women are happy, they play good golf.

?      (51:17) Stop obsessing over “winning” the tournament you’re planning to play. We all want to win; otherwise, we wouldn’t go! Stay focused on the things you can control and let go of the things that you can’t. Take care of the little things and the big things will always follow. In golf, take care of your short game, your wedge game, and your bunker play, and commit to every shot 100%. Beyond that, stay grateful and in shape.

30. What’s in Your Bag, Bev Cart Chronicles & the Babes Golf Experience13 Apr 202300:50:44

Tori sits down with Alex, Sally, and Amanda of Babes Golf to talk about what sets their exclusive community apart from all other golf communities.

They then show off the most unique items they keep in their golf bags, all the while giving their best tips for newbies on golf bag essentials!

 Key Moments

?      (14:37) “We may not get a hole-in-one, but we have a whole lot of fun.” This is what Babes Golf is all about: to steer as far as possible from your usual competitive golf club and be a community that prioritizes fun, without any of the pressure of outcompeting your fellow golfer!

?      (27:36) Opening a Babes Golf chapter in Arizona came with a fair share of surprises. The first was how much higher the costs are in running a golf club in Arizona even compared to California. Another is having to figure out a way to fill the summer schedule, considering very few people want to play golf around this time.

?      (32:17) Sally and Amanda show off the most unique items in their golf bags! Listen to the stories behind a custom-made JAWS wedge, a Birdie Supply towel with a magnet, a handy club-cleaning brush, a special-edition ball and a matching club head cover, and wedges passed down from father to daughter!

?      (41:34) It’s important to change your wedges every 80 rounds. Likewise, players should get their grips changed every 40 rounds. This is a very easy process: Head to the PGA superstore, or any golf store, and ask the representative to install the grips for you for a fee. They’ll be ready in a couple days. Note that if you belong to a club, you can ask to get new grips installed in the bag room.

28. Find Your Best Golf Ball with Beth Yahara06 Apr 202300:58:51

For more info on the Dallas Shootout, visit: DallasShootout.com

Tori sits down with Beth Yahara, a member of the Titleist Golf Ball Fitting Team.

Listen in as Beth shares how any player, whether beginner or expert, can find the right ball for them. She smashes several common golf ball myths, and unpacks the three primary factors to keep in mind when choosing a ball: flight, feel, and spin.

 Key Moments

?      (03:01) Swing speed doesn’t matter. Regardless of your gender, handicap, and all other factors, swing speed is not the most important factor in your game.

?      (07:35) The cover of the golf ball is its most important component. It’s almost always unintentional, but it will throw off a lot of players. The cover is the brakes of the golf ball—what helps it stop. The softer the cover material, the better it interacts with the grooves of the ball.

?      (10:26) There are two types of stopping power. The “cover” takes care of shots going around 50 yards out. Fuller golf swings—around 150 yards coming into the green—come from the “core”, the engine of the golf ball. The Pro V1, Pro V1x, and AVX golf balls will give you your best short game control. The flagship differences between the three balls are flight, feel, and spin.

?      (15:52) You can identify the year of a Titleist golf ball by reading its sidestamp. The flight, feel, and spin of a Pro V1 from 2013 is different from one from 2018. This is why it’s so important to be fit for a golf ball to find one that suits your game.

?      (27:19) Pro V1, Pro V1x, and AVX balls come in optic yellow. There is a “sheen” to these balls that allow sunlight to reflect off of them while airborne, making them easier to see.

?      (36:28) Even beginners can benefit from playing a golf ball they were fitted for. This is for the same reason getting fit for clubs early on can be extremely beneficial. Simply, it allows you to get better, quicker.

?      (43:59) The higher the elevation, the farther the ball goes. Other factors that influence the ball include humidity and weather. However, it’s important to play with the same golf ball no matter the weather, and to store them in a controlled environment regardless of season.

?      (46:40) The feel of the golf ball is influenced by the compression of the core. Cores are all solid rubber. A low-compression golf ball, such as 60 compression, will feel softer than 110 compression. One is not better than the other. As with weather and temperature, performance all depends on the player. This is why players must practice with ...

25. Part Two // Top 5 Golf Etiquette You HAVE TO KNOW When Playing a Tournament27 Mar 202300:28:56

PART TWO of the conversation with Tori, Kim, Tara and Pat as they continue their discussion on tournament must-knows in the wake of their time at the Desert Classic.

This time, they dive into their top five etiquette rules that every tournament player needs to keep in mind.

 Key Moments

?      (02:36) Show up if you made a commitment. That means all two or three days of the tournament! It even includes individual tournaments, no matter how poorly you’re performing because, as Kim reminds us, “You have to take the good with the bad.” By demonstrating that you have the integrity and gumption to stick with it no matter what, you’ll almost always be invited to play another tournament.

?      (06:56) Don’t step in someone else’s putting line. It’s almost always unintentional, but it will throw off a lot of players.

?      (08:49) Always ask whether to have the flag in or out on the first hole. A lot of players won’t care either way, but it’s always best practice to ask.

?      (10:10) Always ask whether players want to play ready golf or honors. Some players like to start with honors, others don’t. But when it comes to the putting green, always go with honors.

?      (14:35) Always ask before playing music. The rule of thumb here is, the more serious the tournament, the less appropriate it is to play music. In a similar vein, try not to be on your phone for too much of the game, as this will likewise distract the other players.

?      (18:25) Help others in the group look for lost balls. Aside from basic etiquette, making the effort to look for a lost ball helps with pace of play. Once the player gets to the location, they have three minutes to look for the ball until it’s considered lost.

?      (20:53) Fixing ball marks and filling sand divots. And don’t just fix and fill yours. Fix and fill two more.

24. Top 5 Rules You HAVE TO KNOW When Playing a Tournament23 Mar 202300:34:34

Tori sits down with Tara Bateman, Kim Eaton, and Pat Kuntz.

With their experience at the Desert Classic fresh on their minds, Tori and her guests dive into the top five rules every player needs to keep in mind when playing in a tournament.

 Key Takeaways

?      (02:52) Know the difference between a red line and a yellow line. The red line is a lateral penalty area, in which there is always an option to play the ball. The rules have recently changed so that a player can now ground their club and pick up almost anything in the penalty area. A yellow penalty area may still be playable, such as across water. But it’s likely that the player will have to take a penalty of one stroke if the ball is in the water.

?      (11:53) Drop the ball from the cart path, considered a free relief. Other examples of free relief include ground under repair, casual water, embedded ball, animal hole, and a cable box within your swing path.

?      (18:14) When your ball moves on the putting green after marking it, the ball’s official place is still on that mark. Once you’ve marked it, you have to replace it, even if the ball enters the hole.

?      (22:10) When a ball is non-playable (ex. in a bush), a player has three options. 1) Take two club lengths from the ball in any direction; 2) Take the ball on the line to the flag stick and go back as far as needed; 3) Replay the shot.

?      (25:57) When a ball is OB (out-of-bounds) or lost, the only option is to retee it. If you’re not sure that the ball is lost, always play a provisional before going forward. That’s because, once you go forward, you can no longer go back to hit a provisional.

23. Building a Golf Apparel Business from the Ground Up with Founder of Golftini, Susan Hess20 Mar 202301:01:55

Tori sits down with Susan Hess, Founder and Head Designer at Golftini, a luxury brand of fashionable and functional women's golf apparel.

Listen in as Susan looks back on starting Golftini in 2004, motivated by her own annoyance that women’s golf wear at the time was either functional or fashionable, but never both!

The first skort she ever designed, for herself, instantly caught the attention of the other women at her club, and for the next year she made and sold product to her peers with no intention to make a “real” business out of it. That was until she was invited to set up a booth at a PGA Tour a year later in 2005. She went home with a $70,000 check, and she never looked back.

Susan shares how she learned the ropes of business ownership, gaining almost all of it from practical experience in the trenches day by day as the brand grew. And the name “Golftini”? She says it came to her almost on a whim amid the martini craze in mid-2000s New York.

She wrote the name, along with the martini logo, down on a napkin, and it stuck!

 Key Moments

?      (32:03) Susan talks about her Spring and Fall lines and what to expect in upcoming seasons.

22. Keep Your Golf Stats to a Lower Handicap Index16 Mar 202300:50:42

Download the *NEW* Round Report Card

Tori sits down with Adam Walicki and Christine Fero.

Christine kicks off the conversation with an update on her journey to a single-digit handicap, which she began on June 30, 2022. You can follow her progress in real-time on her Instagram (www.instagram.com/practice_makes_9)!

Tori, Adam, and Christine then dive into today’s topic: the importance of keeping stats, and how to use a round report card to track your game.

 Key Takeaways

?      (02:48) When working to improve your handicap, the number won’t mean as much as the confidence you develop on the course. When Christine began documenting her journey on Instagram over half a year ago, she had no idea how things would go. All that mattered was that she gave it her best shot. When she embraced that mindset, progress naturally followed.

?      (16:01) You should prioritize your stats even over your handicap. Stats are like a handicap: Everybody should have them. However, not only do your stats give you an overall picture of your progress as a golfer, but they also tell you the direction you need to go to keep improving.

?      (24:06) Take advantage of the round report card. You can use the round report card for any course and any round. Start by filling in the par in the top row, the score in the second row, then the fairway in the third. There is a row for yards in and clubs used, followed by greens in regulation (GIR). There is an optional row where you can note which direction you missed. Finally, there is a row for putts.

?      (35:21) For a handicap index of 10-19, great goals are 5-6 fairways, 8+ GIR, 34 or fewer putts, and 50+ feet in putts made.

?      (38:32) The latest version of the round report card includes rows for throwaways and opportunities. An opportunity is a birdie putt inside of about 18 feet down to 15 feet (the latter for more undulated greens). Throwaways is the most important category for any golfer striving for a single-digit handicap. Examples of throwaways (as listed on the new round report card) include: out-of-bounds, penalty shots, unplayable, sideways or backwards punch-out, bogie within 100 yards, 3 puts within 40 feet, putts missed within 3 feet.

20. From a 10 Handicap Index to a 1 Index in 18 Months with Michael Hutchinson09 Mar 202301:06:13

Tori sits down with Michael Hutchinson, who famously went from a 10 handicap index down to a 1 in 18 months.

Listen in as Michael explains how he was able to accomplish this feat by assessing his golf capabilities and skill gaps.

He breaks down the three areas that made the biggest difference: Understanding what occurs at impact (ground strike, face strike, face direction), optimizing his strategy, and working on his mental game.

Key Takeaways

  • (18:22) To stop topping the ball, learn how to accomplish a full swing as short as you possibly can. Work on your low point control, where the club impacts the ball. There is no such thing as the perfect swing, much less a repeatable perfect swing. Every golfer needs to build the skill they uniquely need to coordinate the way their muscles fire, and in which sequence.
  • (24:30) Determining what needs work, whether your irons or your skill, is a matter of diagnostics. There are three areas to take note of: what is occurring at impact, strategy, and the mental game. Impact in particular is influenced by ground strike, face strike, and face direction. Once you can distill those impact variables to determine why your balls end up where they land, the better you can improve.
  • (32:01) Face direction accounts for roughly 75% of where the ball starts. When you hit a shot that starts to the left, your path wasn’t necessarily to the left, but the face was closed on impact. Learn the ball flight laws to understand why the ball curves as it does. Only two things cause a hook: the face of the club being closed to the path through impact, and gear effect.
  • (39:51) Strategy is all about applying knowledge of your own patterns, or the dispersion of your golf shot, to the course layout and design. The two biggest mistakes players make is aiming too close to the center of the fairway and the pins. Going into a round with a game plan is always helpful. Most importantly, know your exact target off the tee and know where to miss.
  • (49:36) Your mental game will evolve the most out of these factors. Mindfulness practices tend to change over time, and finding the best ways to put yourself into a state of flow is a daily process of discovery.

18. Speed Training and Gaining More Distance with Andrew Hannon & Zach Gulley02 Mar 202300:54:43

Tori sits down with golf fitness trainers Andrew Hannon and Zach Gulley.

Our guests kick things off with their thoughts on using social media as a tool for business growth, before diving into the meat of today’s conversation: each of their top five ways to gain more distance!

Key Takeaways

?      (13:53) Improving your speed can increase your distance, but it’s not the only way to do so. Other factors that play into distance are improving the mechanics of your swing, and fixing or acquiring equipment specifically built for you.

?      (18:30) The gym will only take you so far. It’s never a bad idea to go to the gym and work on your fitness. But if you’re serious about unlocking your potential as a golfer, it’s important to work with a coach on a regular basis.

?      (21:46) Work on sequencing. At the most basic level, a swing sequence is a progression of movement from the pelvis to the torso to the arms to the wrists to the club. It’s not like that for everybody, not even tour pros. But Andrew and Zach train this sequence as a foundation because it results in maximum athletic motion. In other words, getting as close as possible to this particular sequence has been observed to produce the most power.

?      (30:48) Improve your force production. This is where the gym comes into play. How fast can you squat, bench, and row? Have a professional evaluate your current level of fitness as well as your body fat and other vitals, so that you’re able to create an optimized roadmap for your physical progression. Force production is crucial because more strength equals more speed.

?      (37:46) When screening a player, Andrew and Zack begin with trying to understand who they are as a golfer. What’s your motivation? Are you teachable? Are you willing to invest a considerable amount of time to achieve your goals? Most people are excited about the thought of improving their fitness and skills, but it’s just as important to willingly put in the time and effort needed to do so!

?      (42:01) Incorporate power implements to your training. The goal is to train your body to move lighter loads faster. Use equipment such as medicine balls and bands, and practice jumps to boost your force production.

?      (43:55) The three Ds of iron fitting are Distance, Dispersion, and Dissent angle. This is because each club has a different goal. Two clubs that do the same thing only make for a heavier bag. As important as distance is, without tight dispersion, you will have worse misses. The better your misses, the better your game. Likewise, if you’re not landing on and holding greens, your score will continue to add up.

17. All the Club Fitting Questions Answered with #TeamTitleist27 Feb 202301:00:12

Tori and her sister Alix sit down with Titleist’s Manager of club fitting and trial events Bobby Flood, and fitting specialist Kayla Fridley.

Listen in as Bobby and Kayla explain the importance of getting fitted for clubs as early as possible if you have the goal of improving your golf game.

They run us through their personalized tried-and-tested process at Titleist so that you know what to expect at your first fitting!

 Key Takeaways

?      (07:10) If your score matters to you as a golfer, you should consider getting club fit. If you’re working on your game, it’s worth getting fitted as soon as possible. Even if you’re just trying to break 100 or 110, it’s important to be using the right equipment for you.

?      (12:23) It’s okay to use someone else’s clubs at the beginning to establish the fundamentals. As you get the basics down, you can gradually replace those hand-me-downs as you transition into fine-tuning those fundamentals.

?      (13:37) At Titleist, you can get fitted for everything but a putter, but you can always choose specifically what you want to be fit for. Fittings last 45 minutes per category and are based on Titleist’s registration and interview process, based solely around your goals.

?      (16:30) The fitting fee at Titleist is $100. This fee secures your spot and fitting time, and it goes toward any purchases you make during the fitting. For example, if you decide to buy the driver you get fitted for, that $100 covers the purchase. A complete set with a driver, fairway wood, hybrid, a wedge, and even a partial set of irons will cost around $2500.

?      (27:58) If you maintain a consistency in your swing but still feel that you can improve, get fitted in addition to working with an instructor. Finding a teacher who understands how a proper club can help you progress is also important.

?      (38:35) When getting fittest at Titleist, bring your current set of clubs. You will be asked about your golf game, expectations, and wants and needs. You’ll start with your 7-iron and get a few swings in, then give your feedback. Usually, this process beginning with drivers proceeds all the way down to wedges. However, with only 45 minutes to work with, your process ultimately depends on which clubs you want to prioritize at your fitting.

15. An Outline to Organizing Your Member/Guest with Kim & Leslie20 Feb 202301:02:10

Tori sits down with Leslie Rangel and Kim Eaton.

After briefing us on their golf game and a few of their secrets to staying in top shape, Leslie and Kim discuss the ins-and-outs of planning and organizing member-guest tournaments.

Key Takeaways

?      (13:10) Know your budget. Once you settle on the number of days you want for the tournament (and verify availability at the pro shop), you’ll want to get clear on your budget. Your budget determines how many spots you’ll pay, the entry fee, meals, and more. Note that the price per day will change depending on the day of the week and the time of year.

?      (21:35) At partner events, you can opt for either the stroke play format or a match play (9-hole matches). Most clubs stick to traditional formats which they’ve run for years. However, you may be able to switch things up for your particular event by making a suggestion with the board. Optionally, you can do what’s called a Horse Race at the end of a game with 10-20 teams taking strict alternating shots on the same hole.

?      (32:34) When determining registration prices, factor in increasing costs. Typically, the use of a country club course is free. But there are cart fees, as well as costs for tee gifts and prizes. Then there’s food, which is often the biggest expense.

?      (37:34) Open registration at least three months in advance, and close around three weeks before the tournament.

?      (41:01) Themes are fun, but they can easily be a time- and money-suck without careful planning. Our favorites for invitationals include casino, rock & roll, gold rush, and springtime.

?      (46:07) You can include parimutuel betting in which players can bet on individual teams to win, place, or show. In Tori’s experience, women don’t usually bet enough money to make it worthwhile. Even if your team wins, you might only walk away with the same amount you bet.

?      (51:47) Get creative with tee gifts and prizes. Our guests’ favorite tee gifts are portable fans and rechargeable hand warmers, water bottles, shoe bags, speakers, and saddle bags. Typical prizes include pro shop credit, gift cards, cash, and merchandise such as bags.

14. Making Your Tournament Schedule and Playing in Bigger Events16 Feb 202300:44:28

Tori sits down with Abe Candelaria III, Adam Walicki, and Erin Groeneveld.

Today’s conversation is all about the often-intimidating world of tournament golf. Listen in as our guests offer their best advice on qualifying for the right events and how to prepare for the rounds that matter.

They also give their thoughts on the mindset differences between male and female players when it comes to participating in golf tournaments, and how women can better motivate and prepare themselves to qualify for championships.

Key Takeaways

  • (8:26) “The way to get better at tournament golf is to play tournament golf,” says Abe. To build up your skill and confidence, particularly at the beginning of your journey, consider joining your local ladies’ or men’s club. The hardest part is getting started, but the only way to improve as a player is to participate in more tournaments.
  • (14:05) Joining an individual event doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be alone. Sign up alongside whoever you’re most comfortable playing with at partner events to carry that support over. “It’s scary until you do it,” says Erin, but most people who join individual events for the first time end up connecting well with a like-minded community of people who are invested in the same thing they are.
  • (26:52) The U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open have more qualifying sites than all others. The U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur is the least participated despite the fact that there is a great chance of qualifying and playing for these championships. If you’ve been a tournament player for the last five or so years, and you’re willing to take time away from your family for the duration of the championship, you’re ready to qualify.
  • (37:06) Never enter a tournament round worried about your mechanics. For a round that matters, Adam and Abe like to be there 90 minutes in advance, the bulk of that time being spent on the range. Adam focuses on wedge timing around 70% of the time, 20% on irons, and the other 10% on drivers and 3 woods.

135. Life at Number One with Stanford Women's Golf Assistant Coach, Brooke Riley23 May 202401:02:12

I’m sitting down with Brooke Riley, the assistant coach of the Stanford Women's Golf team, as she shares her experiences in the world of women’s amateur golf.

Listen in as Brooke talks about her unexpected start in the world of golf, sparked by a gift from her grandfather, and her transition from pro athlete to collegiate coach.

She delves into the Stanford team's meticulous preparation for the NCAA championship and the impact her high school coach's unwavering confidence had on her–a quality she now strives to instill in her own players.

Brooke reflects on the Augusta National, sharing her grandfather's legacy and how a chance encounter with a caddy sharing his name deepened her connection to the game.

We also discuss the ins-and-outs of amateur golf (and how it differs from professional golf), how golf manifests as a part of your identity as a woman, and the often-overlooked role of nutrition and well-being in a golfer's performance.

13. What It’s Like to be on the Road with LPGA Player, Brianna Do13 Feb 202300:52:10

Tori sits down with LPGA touring pro Brianna Do, LPGA caddy Tara Bateman, and Tara’s wife Brandi.

Listen in as Brianna reflects on her first professional event, the 2012 U.S. Women's Open, including her experience at Q School as well as the rewards of playing on the Epson Tour as a “stepping stone” to the LPGA Tour. She then shares how she navigated her last 7 years on the LPGA Tour.

Brianna also gives her thoughts on finding the right caddy, the importance of getting fitted early, getting sponsors, and how playing in a Pro-Am can make or break your professional career.

Key Takeaways

?      (8:31) Having experience playing on the Epson is a great stepping stone to the LPGA Tour. For Brianna, the Epson Tour honed her pace of play while allowing her to make connections with fellow professional women golfers.

?      (12:32) While on conditional status, you can bounce back and forth before the first reshuffle before settling on a tour to stick with. Chase the Monday qualifiers before the first reshuffle. If you don’t make the cut on the LPGA after the first reshuffle, pick one tour to stick with. Play to win at every stage if your goal is to play on the LPGA.

?      (18:19) Not every shot needs to be perfect, and you don’t need to do what everyone else is doing. Listen to your body. You may not need to push yourself to do 18-hole practice rounds on the regular just because you see all the other pros doing them. Also, rather than focusing on the perfect shot, consider the perfect miss instead.

?      (28:32) Minimalism and consistency are key to improving your golf game. You don’t want to spend time wondering whether it’s your club, your swing, or both that are holding you back. Get fitted as early as you can so that you have about a year’s roadmap for skills growth.

?      (41:16) Participating in a Pro-Am Tour may sometimes feel like a necessary evil, but it’s a long-term play. This is for a variety of reasons, including the opportunity to make lasting connections in the world of professional golf. People will remember your Pro-Am rounds.

12. February’s Quick-9 Questions Including Playing Golf on a Budget09 Feb 202300:49:32

Tori sits down with Babes Golf Founder Alex Andersen, and Dobson Ranch Golf Course instructor Natalie Farahani.

Listen in as Alex and Natalie join us to answer listener questions and give their best tips on playing and planning golf events on a budget, and how to deal with feeling intimidated as a female golfer when entering this new world!

 Key Takeaways

?      (8:38) Finding Clubs on a Budget as a Beginner: You don’t need the latest and greatest toys to grow as a player. Sporting goods stores such as Golf Mart in San Diego and 2nd Swing in Arizona can offer you a decent beginner or used set of clubs. You can get by just fine with a wedge, a 7, an 8, and a driver. And while it may not be the most exciting activity, just practicing your putting on a regular basis makes a big difference to your golf game in the long run.

?      (16:02) Lessons on a Budget. A coach doesn’t need to have trained a bunch of pros to be considered high-quality. If you’re on a budget, the best kind of coach is one who you feel comfortable around. More coaches are offering the first lesson for free. Shop around and find the right match, because trust and relatability goes a long way.

?      (21:25) Rounds and Courses on a Budget: Consider joining one of the smaller clubs in your area. They may not have the greatest views, but it isn’t difficult to find reasonable deals relative to what you’ll find at the more prestigious courses. In Arizona, you can get city passes at Encanto 18, Cave Creek, Aguila, Palo Verde, which give you discounts on green fees.

?      (28:16) Hosting Events on a Budget: A growing number of golf courses are eager to see more women on the green. Connecting with these clubs and sharing your vision-mission with them can do wonders when it comes to keeping event costs down.

?      (29:52) Plan early morning or early evening lessons. Most people have to navigate busy schedules to fit golf into their lives. Many golf enthusiasts are moms with full-time jobs. Try looking for coaches that do night training and driving ranges that are open late. Also note that a lot of courses offer junior golf programs.

?      (35:32) In a man’s world, knowing your golf game is vital. It can be really intimidating as a first-timer to begin your golf journey. It’s natural, and everyone goes through it. The best thing you can do is get familiar with the process and your own golf game as soon as possible. When you’re looking at a country club, ask the women there how the culture is before making a decision.

11. Every Shot Must Have a Purpose with Pia Nilsson & Lynn Marriott06 Feb 202300:58:11

Tori sits down with VISION54 co-founders Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson. They are internationally recognized and are the two highest ranked female instructors in America. The pair co-authored four bestselling books, including Every Shot Must Have a Purpose, which we dive into today.

Listen in as Lynn and Marriott discuss the philosophy behind VISION54 before diving into four powerful principles for playing better golf: 1) Think small, play big. 2) Anger makes us stupid. 3) Make practice real. 4) Make pressure your friend.

Key Takeaways

?      (5:19) “54” is a mindset and a process. Shooting 54 (trying to birdie every single hole in an 18-hole round) is a dream for any player. VISION54 comes down to keeping a mind open to possibilities. Professional golfers are distinguished primarily by a greater awareness of their strengths and gaps.

?      (14:12) Think small, play big. “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” Allow yourself to have big and compelling dreams. However, seeing those goals through to fruition starts with the tiniest, seemingly insignificant step. Know the factors that are in your control and those out of your control.

?      (21:42) Anger makes us stupid. Especially heightened emotions, anger included, blind us to perspective and coordination. During those all-too-familiar down moments in a game, the best thing to do is to let the negative emotions pass before making your next decision. Get the tension out of your body by sprinting to the next tee or doing a few jumping jacks. Celebrate all your good shots to raise your positivity all the while. In fact, emotionalizing your outcomes is one thing you can control on the course.

?      (28:18) Make practice real. “There is a big foundational mismatch,” says Pia, “between range culture and the golf course.” Many golfers tend to train the same movements using the same clubs in the same environment, committing them to muscle memory. But the reality is that golf is a game of variables, and no two games will ever require the exact same strategy. Make sure to do all three primary forms of practice regularly: maintenance practice, performance practice, and future practice.

?      (40:27) Make pressure your friend. Downplaying the intensity of the game might not actually be the best strategy. Instead, lean into the pressure, arousal, and adrenaline, if only to be incentivized to stay creative and on your toes.
