Are the "ethical" food choices we make as pure as we imagine them?

Making Sustainable Fashion Sexy Again — Conscious Influencers @SanjanaRishi and @PallaviSingh26 Jun 202402:13:14

Fast fashion has sold us the idea that more is better, turning a capitalist trap into the disguise of retail therapy.

It pushes us to overconsume, promising the illusion of happiness through endless purchases of mass-produced items for short-lived trends.

But what is the actual cost of these seemingly cheap outfits, our ‘add to cart’ mentality, and who really pays the price?

The underside of the industry is far more shocking than we’re led to believe.

Sustainable fashion strives to challenge this norm through thoughtful consumption, valuing quality over quantity, supporting ethical practices, and making choices that reflect both our own values and our cultural heritage.

Why is sustainability the new sexy? And can we redefine fashion to be more conscious and compassionate?

In this episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, sustainable fashion influencers, Sanjana Rishi and Pallavi Singh strut their insights with Shreya Ghodawat, delving Into the reality of fast fashion, the importance of decolonising our mindset and returning to our textile roots, the power of individual choices, breaking the addiction of mindless shopping, greenwashing among brands, and the crucial role influencers can play in promoting ethical fashion.

Taking on the Global Food Crisis by Solving Hunger and Malnutrition - Neel Ghose, Robin Hood Army12 Jun 202401:06:29

Global agricultural systems produce around 4 million metric tonnes of food every year, more than enough to feed 10 billion people. So why does hunger and malnutrition still exist? Today, 795 million people are hungry. Another 2 billion are expected to join them by 2050. Could it be that global food production is incredibly inefficient or is our inability to feed the entirely of the world’s population stemming from excess? And where does all of the extra food go? Mostly, in our bins. Every day, enormous quantities of food are thrown away, while too many go to sleep without having eaten a single meal. This paradox of abundance vs shortage is a created problem, one that can be solved if we make use of local resources, divert surplus to the hands with nothing and improve community resilience. The idea of a zero-fund volunteer-driven nonprofit organisation began to improve food access to those who need it most. In this episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, co-founder of  @RobinHoodArmy.  , Neel Ghose and  @SustainableTeaWithShreya  discuss how hunger is more than missing a meal and that has the less fortunate in its grip, why the NGO won’t accept money, the purpose behind the altruistic work they do, and how they developed a humanitarian network of good samaritans in India and across the world to solve the global hunger crisis.

Exposing the Hypocrisy in Global Leadership: What They Don't Want You to Know— Selma Bichbich28 Aug 202400:55:48

Imagine waking up one day as a refugee in your own homeland. Your identity, your roots, your very existence - questioned and threatened. For many in Palestine and parts of the world, this isn't a hypothetical scenario; it's a harsh, daily reality. But why don't these stories reach our ears unfiltered? Why does the truth seem so elusive? In an age of information overload, our inherent biases, preconceived notions cultivated over years, sensationalised news coverage, and surprisingly, even AI systems, have all played a role in confusing truth for falsehood. How did we arrive at this point where the lived experiences of millions can be so easily dismissed ? In this thought-provoking episode with Selma Bichbich we uncover the surprising and often overlooked connections between climate change and regional conflicts, the power of youth in shaping policy, real impact of 'keyboard activism', questioning whether our online efforts are driving meaningful change or simply creating an illusion of progress, limitations of peace negotiations, the changing narratives around international law, and the crucial role of youth in shaping a sustainable future. This conversation will push you to reconsider what you thought you knew, offering fresh perspectives on some of the most pressing issues facing the MENA region and the world at large. A Survival Story from the Depths of Ocean Pollution Turned Into Conservation - Mathilda Dsilva01 May 202401:01:48

How many times have we enjoyed a refreshing dip in the ocean, surfed on or splashed in the waves with no worry?

Where pristine beaches once invited us with their crystal-clear waters and sandy shores, something deeply troubling is happening beneath the surface.

Toxic, untreated, polluted water is wreaking havoc, causing serious health issues in the face of inaction.

But this isn't only about numerous individuals falling ill; it's a broader issue affecting those reliant on coastal resources, entire communities grappling with the consequences and collapsing underwater ecosystems.

Are we next on the (overfishing) line?

The truth is out here for all to see. And yet, despite strong evidence, many are still reluctant to accept it.

Others sink into a current of hopelessness, unable to swim past reality and do something to turn the tide on it.

So what can we do to emerge from our defeated mindset and dive into action?

'Garbage Man' to PM Narendra Modi's National Cleanliness Ambassador- Malhar Kalambe on Beach Please17 Apr 202401:18:20

What do you do when you see your local beach choking with plastic? Do you take charge to clean up the mess or simply complain and blame the authorities? While we debate about if it is our job to pick up the trash we may or may not have thrown, our shorelines are becoming clogged with waste. But have we ever stopped to think about our own civic responsibility? Heavy with pollution to the point of no return, we’re swiftly losing the tide of our natural, open spaces. We can all play our part in bringing change, starting with throwing trash where it is meant to go—in the bins. By minimalizing and segregating our waste, and limiting our reliance on plastic. Then maybe, one day, we won’t have to go abroad to enjoy a lovely picnic at a wave-kissed waterfront. We could simply put on our straw hats and go to one nearby. So will we come together to keep our beaches clean or wash our hands off the matter? One man has made it his mission to take up the back-breaking work no one else wanted to do, starting a ripple effect that will inspire you too. In this episode of Sustainable tea with Shreya,  @SustainableTeaWithShreya  and Malhar Kalambe environmentalist and founder of Beach Please India discuss the huge plastic problem plaguing the beaches of cosmopolitan cities, how microplastic is polluting our oceans, the deadly consequences it has on both marine and human life, why the ban on single-use plastics failed, his personal growth from an angsty teenager to a ‘Swachhata Ambassador Award’ Recipient, how a one-time beach cleanup turned into an on-going youth-led movement, and why we should strive to be the change we want to see in the world. Does your food affect your thoughts & feelings? Nutrition, gut health, wellbeing with Neha Ranglani03 Apr 202401:19:41

Is health and nutrition only about what you eat? Or is there more to food than meets the mouth/ palate? The lack of synergy between the mind and body makes us look for comfort in food. This seemingly harmless, emotional reliance can quickly become an unhealthy attachment. A hindering habit we can’t let go off. How often do we snack mindlessly, finish meals in a hurry, or worse, neglect the nourishment on our plates to cater to all the other stressors in our lives? Stuck in this mindset, we get carried away and try to make up for it by measuring every calorie, cutting out essential carbs and exercising excessively. It takes guts to acknowledge what we’re putting ourselves through and to step away from that. But when we do, we gain a whole new perspective on conscious consumption and learn to prioritise mind over matter. Want to sustain your wellness and nourish a better quality of life? In this episode of  @SustainableTeaWithShreya  integrative health coach, holistic wellbeing nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner, @NehaRanglani and @ShreyaGhodwat share their insightful food for thought on the process of eating well, the dairy myths we’ve been fed, the pro-protein gym culture, inflammation and heart attacks, the breakdown of plant protein vs animal protein in the body, the scientific sync between the gut and brain, facing backlash for speaking up against everyone’s beloved cottage cheese (paneer), balancing thoughts and emotions with nutrition, and how opting for a plant-based diet improves your holistic wellbeing. Smartphones, smart homes to smart protein? Beyond Meat, Food Tech & Resistance with Varun Deshpande17 Mar 202401:32:34

How does food shape our sense of belonging? Why do we seek comfort in it? Are meals only for sustenance or do flavours evoke feelings?

We’re emotionally connected to our foods. They become symbols of culture, celebration, community and childhood memories.

We gush about secret recipes passed down through generations. To many, it’s a culinary identity they want to hold onto. So if a large part of who we are is what we eat, what does consuming meat make us?

Since food is such an incredibly personal experience, we can be reluctant to look beyond what we’re told or what we think we know.

Better alternatives are often met with skepticism, criticism, or social stigma.

And we hesitate to try new things that may be much better for us.

But what happens when we’re faced with the truth about the foods we love?

When you find out that the most efficient animal we farm for food gives only 1 calorie per 9 calories worth of plants it consumes?

And is everything labelled “natural” actually good for you?

Global health expert, @VarunDespande, former Founding Managing Director of @GFIIndia & @GFIAsia and current Director at the @AsianInstituteofOncology: Cancer Hospitals across India breaks down the discourse around meat.

In the fourth episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, Varun and @ShreyaGhodawat uncover the processed reality of “real” meat, the unnatural methods in its production, the inefficiency of factory farming, the fear around plant-based or cultivated substitutes, toxic masculinity and meat consumption, and reaffirm the healthy partnership of science and food, clearing all doubts around alt protein.

Kiss, Marry, (Not) Kill With Priyansh Parekh & Farah Amber | Vegan Dating, Relationships and Community 10110 Mar 202400:38:46

Can vegans and non-vegans date? Would you see someone you don’t see eye to eye with?

All hell breaks loose when 3 vegans in a room sit to discuss their dating lives. What could possibly go wrong?

Apparently quite a lot, considering all the proposals, love and hate they’re getting in their comments and DMs.

Dating in 2024 can be tricky, especially if you’re on the internet and find yourself in a group that everyone LOVES to troll.

Seeking like-minded partners who share the same values may not be as easy as you’d imagine. So what makes it worth it?

In this episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, @shreyaghodawat, @prunchme and @itsfarah have an unfiltered chat about relationships, dating within and outside the plant-based community, raising hypothetical kids with compassion, the stigma around the term ‘vegan’, advocacy through content creation, and the love-hate they get for it.

Can Tofu be used as skincare (Please DON'T try this at home)? How to flirt with a vegan? Would we kiss, marry, date a meat eater? Preachy vegan, militant vegan - is there a certain type of vegan anymore?

Is there a difference between ‘cruelty-free’ and ‘vegan’? Why should we be open to different perspectives? Why is what is right versus who is right more important? And how do we hold the power to create change?

This trio will force you to think and leave you in splits with their fun banter, candid conversation, and quick wit.

Architecture dropout to Tofu King 👑 - Finding your WHY with Priyansh Parekh03 Mar 202401:02:11

We are constantly told what to do, what not to do, what to eat, what not to eat, what religion to follow and to what degree, how to speak, how to create and how to stay inside little boxes. In a world where it’s easier to follow the norms, what happens when you break the mould of convention? When you find your rationale the reason for your beliefs? When you decide to back your words with action? When you find your WHY and it’s much bigger than a cube of cottage cheese? In the second episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, Shreya sits across from dubai-based Low-waste Chef and Content Creator, Priyansh Parekh as they dive into the power of walking the talk.Priyansh's extraordinary story is one of daring to follow his heart, even when it meant straying from the conventional path, from dreaming of designing Bollywood sets, studying performance design and dropping out of architecture school, to finding his true calling in the kitchen that had him cooking at United Nations COP28.Shreya and Priyansh explore the importance of gaining wisdom through reasoning, of community and connection, staying true to one’s values even when it's tough, embracing diversity, questioning the status quo, and finding hope, sometimes in unexpected places.Discussing the similarities between Jainism and veganism; using nature as inspiration in architecture; the misconceptions around soy with a standoff between tofu and paneer; and how grandmas know best when it comes to sustainability and environmentalism - this conversation make you want decolonise your plates, unlearn your biases and embrace the past.#colonialism #sustainability #ahimsa #veganprotein #soy #tofu #paneer #tofurecipes #veganrecipes #veganchef #plantbased #protein #iron #fat #calcium #fibre #soya #myth #dairy #meat #chicken #hormones #chickennuggets #decolonisation #environment #intersectionality #jainism #religion #nonviolence #leather #animals #tofurkey #nutrition #crueltyfree #community #COP #unfccc

"Why does NO ONE show us THIS footage?” Farah Amber on how her Shock turned into Digital Advocacy25 Feb 202400:43:13

Imagine having your fate sealed the day you were born.

Who gets to live and who doesn’t - is that up for debate?

Where does our empathy begin and where does it end?

Are we at the top of the food chain or a part of it?

If we knew THIS hidden truth - would we continue doing what we do?

In the first episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, Shreya sits down with Farah Amber. Farah is an animal rights advocate and content creator from Dubai, with a background in filmmaking and video editing. She is also the host of Changemakers Podcast and pretend “undercover agent”, who visits livestock farmsteads to uncover the truth behind animal husbandry operations.

Farah shares the inspirational story of her grandfather’s recovery on a plant-based diet, the dichotomy of growing up in a family of meat eaters and vegetarians, her brother’s influence, having cool grandparents, and how she “accidentally” became vegan.

Why are we biased towards certain animals? What are we supporting as consumers?

Shreya and Farah explore the ways to cope with the online hate they receive for their causes/ belief systems, going against what everyone else is doing and the societal alienation that comes with it.

Gain insights on where your animal products come from, the emotional toll it takes on farmers, the connection between war and slaughterhouses, the intersection of feminism and veganism, and the desensitisation of speciesism.

Ensuring Safety for Women through Law, Leadership and Change—@AmandaChong & @ChristineAmourLevar23 Aug 202401:01:49

In a system that treats women as second class citizens without safety, dignity, or equal rights and opportunities, what can we do to bring about change? Women make up 50% of the world’s population, yet they are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, bearing the brunt of its consequences while also being excluded from the decision-making process. By bringing women's leadership and their voices to the forefront, driven by their strength, empathy, and collaboration to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time. With men as allies, actively challenging the structures that perpetuate their own privilege. How can we be a part of the solution? In this episode of  @SustainableTeaWithShreya  in collaboration with the  @womens_forum  , Shreya Ghodawat sits down with public international lawyer, playwright, poet, and social advocate, Amanda Chong and sustainability advocate and co-founder of Women on a mission, Christine Amour Levar to discuss the role of education in dismantling the patriarchy, stigmas as cultural taboos, the equality vs equity debate, female reproductive health, the impact of systemic inequality, the need for women leadership, gender justice and men’s participation in this fight. #masculineenergy #feminineenergy #balancewithin #legalempowerment #ActivistInsights #divineinspiration #genderjustice #empathymatters #lawyer #socialchange #survivorsupport #traumaawareness #creativeflowstate #womenempowerment #climateaction #sustainability #empowersurvivors #speakup #humanityfirst #courage

The Global Sisterhood Reshaping Climate Action: Pat Mitchell, Ronda Carnegie & Hafsat Abiola 13 Sep 202400:37:45

In the fight for climate justice, inequality isn’t just about resources or emissions; it’s also about representation. Women, often disproportionately affected by climate change, have long been sidelined in decision-making spaces dominated by men. Despite their critical role in communities, particularly in the Global South, their voices remain underrepresented in climate leadership. Yet, rather than accepting this imbalance, these women are using their exclusion as a driving force, turning eco-anxiety into a catalyst for global change.

We delve into the emotional journey of these "dangerous women" as they navigate their roles in the climate movement. We explore how they channel their frustrations into powerful action, revealing the stark contrast between idealistic aspirations and the tough realities of driving meaningful change. Their stories offer invaluable insights into what it truly takes to create a lasting impact in a space where representation and action are critically intertwined.

While we are asking ourselves What does it take to bridge the gap between climate ambition and action? And how can women around the world step into leadership roles to drive the change we need?

In this episode of Sustainable Tea with Shreya, @ShreyaGhodawat is joined by @PatMitchell, @HafsatAbiola, and @RondaCarnegie to explore their transformative roles in climate justice. They discuss how Project Dandelion breaks barriers, amplifies marginalised voices, and combines scientific solutions with empathy. Tune in for personal stories of overcoming eco-anxiety, bridging the Global North-South divide, and harnessing indigenous knowledge to shift the narrative from women as victims to powerful solvers.

What Drove Actor Genelia Deshmukh to Make This Drastic Change—And Why Her Family Followed Suit!02 Oct 202400:56:06

The internet’s favourite person, actor, producer, and entrepreneur Genelia Deshmukh breaks down the scientific and empathetic reasons why her entire family is plant-based. Growing up in a Mangalorean Catholic household where non-veg meals, especially fish, were the norm, Genelia’s shift to plant-based living was unexpected. What started as a spiritual practice evolved into a wholesome lifestyle, leading to her realise the health benefits of ditching dairy and meat for good. Learning about the power of plants through nutrition courses with plant-based pioneer and expert, Colin Campbell, she first challenged her own long-held beliefs while also navigating societal pressures and smirks from others for raising her children differently. Her commitment to making plant-based living more palatable to those like her and her husband, @RiteishDeshmukh, led to the inception of her alt-protein venture, Imagine—offering delicious alternatives that even non-vegetarians cannot resist. Much like her beloved character, Aditi aka Meow, in the nostalgic #Bollywood movie, #jaanetuyajaanena , she is winning our hearts all over again with her kindness and compassion for the voiceless. Her mission is simple: To introduce everyone to a whole new world of cruelty-free, plant possibilities. It’s a thoughtful and endearing conversation about health, family, food, and the future of plant-based living OR making plant-based living full of joy and hope, just like her radiant smile. [हिन्दी] Acharya Prashant's Powerful Message on Why Spirituality Must Go Beyond Religion & Tradition24 Oct 202401:09:27

Not your typical spiritual leader, forward-thinker, and truth seeker, ‪@ShriPrashant‬ tackles the hard-hitting issues we rarely hear discussed—climate change, sustainability, and animal rights: In this thought-provoking episode, he breaks down why compassion comes from self-awareness, not religious traditions or cultural norms. Join us for a deep, powerful conversation on the links between violence, consumerism, and belief systems as Acharya Prashant advocates for making veganism central to our lives, revealing how personal choices impact our environment, health, and our higher selves.
