This company is making endlessly recyclable shoe soles from Mediterranean cork!12 Aug 202300:33:29

Series 3, episode 14 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing David Even, the Co-Founder of PRIMAL Soles, a company that specialises in making circular cork insoles which are endlessly reusable.

According to Circular Online, 23 billion pairs of shoes are made each year and 22 billion pairs are thrown into landfill. With sneakerhead and trainer consumption only growing every year - more of what goes into our shoes is just ending up in landfills.

Shoes are one thing, but shoe insoles themselves are contaminating the environment by emitting chemicals into the soil and groundwater.

So, what is the solution to this problem?

PrimalSoles shoes believe they have the answer.

PRIMAL Soles are CO2 negative and endlessly recyclable high performance cork insoles. The bottom of each insole is made from recycled cork and footwear waste. Made for a lifetime of maximum comfort without the environmental footprint.

What makes it even better is you can return your PRIMAL Soles and reuse the material endlessly.

With Carbon neutral shipping on all orders, now that we at SC have discovered this brand, we will be using what David and his team have made in our shoes going forward. A small change with such a huge impact!

This company is transforming discarded wood set for landfills and turning it into valuable products!02 Aug 202300:32:22

Series 3, episode 11 of the Sustainability Champion's Podcast!

Introducing Theo Hooker, Co-Founder of Cambium Carbon; a company that specialises in transforming fallen trees into valuable products with place-based impact!

Put simply, the team at Cambium Carbon looks to source locally, save locally and reinvest in local tree planting. A circular economy model that creates new green jobs and funding support for urban canopy restoration in the communities that need it most.

The problem that Theo and his team are looking to address is that in the US alone, more than 45 million tons of urban tree waste is generated every year. With wood reuse, in the US alone, this has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 251 million tons annually.

The approach that Cambium Carbon takes is unique—reduce wood waste, create jobs in a transparent supply chain, and support equitable restoration of community forests.

This tea company’s factory that runs on 100% renewable energy and gives back to the grid!26 Jul 202300:34:39

Series 3, episode 9 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Daniel Graham, Managing Director of Birchall Tea, a company that specialises in making fine teas with a focus on sustainability using plant-based tea bags.

For those who watch our podcast weekly, you will know that our Host, Daniel Hartz, loves, as the British call it - a cuppa.

In fact, per episode, Daniel will go through an entire pot of tea - so approximately 4 cups per episode.

So when the opportunity came about to interview a tea company, with sustainable practices and infrastructure, we (Daniel) were extremely excited!

A company that’s been in the tea trade since 1872, Birchall Tea is an award winning, family-run business located in England. What makes Birchall tea stand out from their competitors is their commitment to sustainability - and this is evident in their factory, which is powered 100% by 482 solar panels - which produces twice as much electricity than their factory needs, meaning they give a lot of the energy back to the grid!

What’s more - Birchall Tea has become the first tea company in the world to officially join the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative, which invites organisations to work towards global climate neutrality by addressing their own climate footprint.

Even down to their tea - Birchall Tea have created a biodegradable tea bag, which is plastic free. So with 165 million cups of tea enjoyed in the UK each year, Birchall Tea are on a mission to make sustainable practices at the core of their operations.

Guilt-free sipping.

In this week’s podcast, we learn more about Birchall Tea and their approach to being more sustainable.

This app is helping consumers reduce their emissions and live more sustainability - each purchase at a time!13 Jul 202300:40:36

Series 3, episode 8 of the Sustainability Champion's Podcast!

Introducing Sanchali Pal, Founder of The Commons Earth, a company that specialises in helping consumers measure and reduce their carbon footprint.

For Sanchali, she saw first hand the impacts the climate crisis is having on people when working in Ethiopia and India. When returning to the US, Sanchali began tracking her carbon footprint in an excel spreadsheet, and through tracking her purchasing, and other activity, was able to cut her emissions by over 30%. For Sanchali - her life is richer, healthier, and happier because of it.

“We have an intuition for other important metrics in our lives – dollars, calories, steps. Soon we’ll have an intuition for carbon, too.”- Sanchali Pal.

So how does The Commons Earth app work?

Every spending choice is a climate choice, and every purchase is an opportunity for action.

The products and services we buy require resources from the Earth to produce. Those are carbon costs, and they’re part of being alive.

The Commons Earth helps you grow your carbon institution so we can shrink our collective impact.

Track your emission, act on how you are building a lifestyle that is more in balance with the planet, offset to compensate for unavoidab;e commissions, and multiplying - getting more people to have more balance.

It’s that simple.

In this week’s podcast, we learn more about The Commons app, and how it works. We also discuss Sanchali’s background and the inspiration she had in developing this app - also what’s next for The Commons Earth as they begin to scale out!

This company is on a mission to reduce waste, and reliance on fossil fuels in the wool market!05 Jul 202300:36:32

Series 3, episode 7 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Claire McGovern, Founder of Rhyme studio, a company that specialises in advisory, interior design and design manufacturing of high quality, customisable, responsible, and healthy sustainable furnishings that includes; carpets, tapestry & textile collections.

In many of our recent podcast episodes, we have discussed the textiles industry widely and the issues textile materials have on the environment. So we are always delighted to learn about new champions who are working in this space to reduce waste, introduce a circular approach in production and reuse as much as possible.

And that is exactly what Claire and her team are doing at Rhyme Studio.

After the collapse of the Irish wool market in 2020, Rhyme Studio became the sole entity both inside and outside Ireland promoting the use of native Irish wool for carpet & textiles. An environmental tragedy persists today as many sheep farmers the world over dump or burn freshly shorn wool deemed unacceptable by a fashion industry that will only trade in merino or fossil fuel based synthetic fibres.

With a shift towards mass production of petrochemical based synthetics and resource draining cotton, this approach has transformed the global fibre market, largely driven by the whims of the fashion industry. Within the EU alone, there is considerable wool waste and a failure to recognise the multi-faceted renewable and biodegradable qualities of this earliest known natural textile.

At Rhyme Studio it is their desire for the design world to put nothing out that does not give back in equal measure. Calling attention to the unnecessary waste, the decline of the global market for wool and the environmental crisis facing the industry. Carbon sinking, renewable & biodegradable wool fibre, not synthetic and fossil fuel dependent fibre is Nature’s way and has a multitude of uses not limited to their customizable surfacing and textiles.

Rhyme Studio’s ultimate goal is a circular production model for a genuinely responsible design collection.

This brand is positively impacting society with clothing through transparency and education.28 Jun 202300:32:40

Series 3, episode 6 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Josh Gelder, Founder and CEO of The Fision, a company that specialises in making fashionable T-Shirts with a purpose.

When our team was introduced to The Fision all we could think was ‘Looking good never felt so good’. On our channel we have been showcasing a number of fashion brands who are specialising in a circular approach, or waste reduction, to their brands' clothing.

Fast fashion and the fashion industry are contributing largely to many environmental problems. From the carbon the industry emits each year, to the landfill crisis doubling year after year with textiles, to human rights issues surrounding workers' rights in factories around the world.

More ethical, sustainable fashion brands need to be available to set standards within the industry, and that is exactly what the team at The Fision is doing! By putting intention into each and every step of its process, The Fision uses innovative methods such as regenerative farming, blockchain technology, and even traceable packaging created from ocean-bound plastics to ensure, as the team at The Fision puts it, “radical transparency to prove what we claim [in our marketing and communications] is true." The mission at The Fision is simple: continue to be innovative, and develop a fully sustainable and circular apparel model.

From incorporating ‘Good Earth Cotton’ and using blockchain technology, this podcast covers a wide range of issues and how The Fision is addressing each.

This company is on a mission to prevent 1 billion tonnes of CO2e emissions by 2030!21 Jun 202300:33:18

Series 3, episode 5 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Louis Potok, Co-Founder & CEO at Recoolit, a company that specialises in, put simply, fighting the most neglected problem in climate change.

The planet is burning, and we need as the team at Recoolit put it “all hands on deck”. Summer after summer, we are seeing more extreme forest fires all over the world. With extreme weather changes, drought in regions and extreme rainfall in others, we need companies to innovate, and create solutions that protect our environment, communities & homes.

And that is exactly what Recoolit are on a mission to do!

In 2019, guest of this week’s podcast, Louis Potok, went looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the fight against climate change.

The problem Louis discovered was that refrigerants are responsible for more warming than the entire aviation industry - with 3 billion tonnes of CO2e being emitted each year!

So, in 2020, Louis founded Recoolit and what started as a 1 man team grew to a team of 9 based in California and Indonesia as the team at Recoolit looked to capture harmful refrigerant waste and destroy it.

Their work depends solely on businesses and individuals that purchase their carbon credits - and the impact Recoolit has made over the years is huge!

Removing 10k tonnes already this year, 1497.79 tonnes of CO2e prevented so far, the equivalent to:

4,036,853 miles driven or 24,950 trees planted.

This company is on a mission to create sustainable and long-lasting electronic products!07 Jun 202300:27:25

Series 3, episode 3 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Fabian Hühne, Co-Founder of Syllucid, a company that specialises in creating sustainable electronics that are good for the planet and look to reform the mining industry for the better.

Fabian and his team use products as magnifying glasses in the electronics industry. By researching their supply chains, they show us what challenges the industry is facing. What problems the current supply chains cause and what we must do to solve these issues.

Syllucid can’t change the industry alone or overnight, but they are steadily putting solutions in place!

Fabian and his team are dedicated to fairly and responsibly sourced materials and creating planet-centric supply chains for their products. This means using recycled and fairly sourced minerals and plastics, as well as good working conditions for employees along the entire supply chain.

From durable designs, supply chain research and transparency for their customers, in this week’s episode, Fabian sheds light on an industry that has caused so much harm to the environment where these mining practices are carried out, and how unsustainable the industry really is with a limited number of materials and minerals available.

This company is helping homeowners live in safer, more sustainable spaces!24 May 202300:34:24

Series 3, episode 1 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast!

Introducing Jen & Rusty Stout, Co-Founders of Healthier Homes, a company that was ‘born out of necessity’’.

To understand the story of Healthier Homes, is to know the background for the inspiration behind Jen & Rusty’s work. In 2009, when working on her MBA, Jen discovered her health was deteriorating. The cause—hidden black mold in the walls of her new Dallas apartment.

The results from this were catastrophic on Jen’s health and well being.

During Jen’s recovery, and meeting her now husband Rusty, they were inspired to rethink how we build, furnish and live inside our homes. For both our health and the environment.

For many of us, especially during the pandemic, we spent much of our time indoors surrounded by a wide variety of chemicals. So Jen & Rusty are building and decorating homes and hoping to inspire other contractors and homeowners to make smart building choices. This starts from the construction and goes to fixtures, home furnishings and more.

With a combination of their book, ‘Healthier Homes’ and their online shop which sells eco-friendly, sustainable home products, Jen & Rusty are on a mission to educate audiences on the issues poor buildings and home products can have on our health.

‘All the beauty minus any of the harsh chemicals’.

While championing real change to protecting endangered animals and educating audiences on wildlife preservation and conservation in Africa and around the world, Shannon is using her experiences ‘in the wild’ and working as an ambassador to a number of conservation charities and foundations.

Australian born, Shannon now lives in South Africa with her husband where she works as a photographer and cinematographer for channels like NatGeo, the BBC, and Disney to name a few. Through the moments she captures on camera, Shannon brings the natural world safaris to people's attention and helps to showcase the beauty of some of the most endangered species in Africa and around the world.

After a near death experience when filming, Shannon was inspired to create her own line of handmade bracelets - Wild in Africa - with the mission to give back to wildlife and habitat conservation.

Shannon has appeared on our channel before through an Instagram Live, and this week, she is the EIGHTH and final guest of our Women In Sustainability podcast series.

On the SECOND episode of this week and final of our Women In Sustainability podcast series, we speak to Shannon Wild.

These authors have created a complete guide to small-scale homesteading!22 Apr 202300:40:35

Women In Sustainability Series, episode 6.

Introducing Stephanie & Michelle, the Authors of the book ‘Small-Scale Homesteading’.

With over thirty-five years of combined experience, homesteaders Stephanie Thurow and Michelle Bruhn have taught thousands of people across the globe how to garden, preserve food, tend backyard chickens, cook from scratch and care for their families with natural home alternatives.

Now, their homesteading knowledge and instructions can be found in one place in their new book!

You might be asking - What is ‘Homesteading’?

Homesteading is the term given to a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterised by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and among other things.

Many of us want to be more self-sufficient, while also providing a more nutritious lifestyle for our loved ones. Books like Stephanie and Michelle’s offer us a guide to live more sustainably while learning how to grow our own foods, tap maple trees to make homemade syrup and maybe even successfully raise a small flock of egg-laying hens!

There are many sustainable advantages to homesteading—from soil health to avoiding food waste, to name a couple—and homesteading is a growing trend amongst those of us trying to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

That’s why we invited Stephanie & Michelle onto our podcast to be part of this series and to share their knowledge and insights and introduce some of our audience to a homesteading way of life!

On this week’s podcast episode, we speak to both Stephanie and Michelle as part of our ‘Women in Sustainability’ series.

This woman repurposes old garments and materials to make hand-made luxury pillows!12 Apr 202300:38:23

Women In Sustainability Series, episode 3.🎙

Introducing Cate Brown, Founder of Cate Brown Design, a design studio located in New York that creates sustainably sourced, hand-selected objects of finery to make luxury pillows for clients around the world.

The team at Cate Brown Design are offering an alternative to the fast-fashion approach to homewares and celebrating reclaimed luxury craft.

You might ask ‘Why is it essential to repurpose or reuse materials, especially for pillows?’

In the United States alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste—equivalent to 85% of all textiles—end up in landfills every year.

Fast fashion has created an industry focused on quantity over quality—with consumers buying pieces that they only wear a handful of times and then end up in our already-overfilled landfills.

Something needs to be done to address the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our planet.

We love showcasing champions who creatively solve this challenge by making unique designs and products from materials that already exist within the industry. Form curricular approaches from Sumedhaa at By.Sume for clothing to Cate Brown Design for luxury, handcrafted pillows.

With all their products designed in-house and produced by skilled seamstress Cate Brown, Cate Brown Design’s pieces are designed and made locally in Brooklyn, New York, and Vancouver.

With Cate’s products stocked in some of the best-known retail stores—and used in many hotels—her pillows are finding a new use for garments that otherwise would be discarded!

In this week’s episode, we speak with Cate Brown to learn about the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our environment and how a more creative approach to circular designs is needed to address the problem. We also learn more about her design studio, her team, and the brand she has created.

This women’s cosmetics brand is cruelty free and vegan!08 Apr 202300:35:41

Women In Sustainability Series, episode 2.🎙

Introducing Christina Flach, the Founder and CEO of Pretty Girl MakeUp and Beauty Expert on NBC. Christina’s brand, Pretty Girl MakeUp, was founded in 1996 as she looked to create a better product for both herself, her clients, and customers.

She could never find a high quality lip gloss that would last after application throughout her busiest days. Every gloss she tried and was referred to would seemingly disappear within an hour of application or a sip of water. After trying a dozen products, Christina decided to fix the problem herself–and after a year of formulation, Pretty Girl MakeUp was born.

Christina wanted to do more than just create another lifestyle and cosmetic brand. Christina wanted her brand to resemble her beliefs. From the quality of the product, to how the product is made and even packaged, Christina created something for more than a lifestyle product–she challenged the cosmetics industry to do better.

From skin and eye products, many cosmetic brands use animal testing–something that has been condemned by many animal rights groups and consumers. As such, Christina wanted her brand to be different and take a stand against this. So all of her products at Pretty Girl Makeup are cruelty free.

What’s more, as Pretty Girl Makeup grows, Christina is developing new brands and products. With her business growth, she continues to look for ways to reduce waste in the packaging and postal of her products by using less material and biodegradable packaging.

This episode covers some interesting topics–from understanding more about her approach to health & lifestyle, living more sustainably, creating a brand and businesses with sustainable practices and goals, to also defining a ‘vegan’ cosmetic product!

This brand is on a mission to do something about the damn plastic in our environment!05 Apr 202300:25:56

Women In Sustainability Series, episode 1.🎙

Introducing Victoria, Co-Founder at Damn Plastic, a franchise and online store that sells plastic free products like edible straws, bowls, spoons, biodegradable ear swabs and bamboo toothbrushes!

Based in Austria, the founders of Damn Plastic are on a mission to make sustainability more mainstream by selling products that reduce the amount of single use plastics.

Founded in 2018, the idea for Damn Plastic originated when Co-Founders Victoria and Steph “got drunk” at a festival and they couldn’t stop looking at all the plastic and single-use trash that was, in their words, “f***ing everywhere”.

So in 2019, they opened their flagship store in Salzburg, Austria. Since the launch, the team at Damn Plastic have grown rapidly over the past three years and have accomplished a lot: from receiving the UN Sustainable Development Goals Action Award in 2020, to helping other green entrepreneurs in discovering their dream and launching their own Damn Plastic franchises. With more franchises appearing not just in Europe, but now around the world, the team at Damn Plastic is growing and so too is their #DamnPlastic reach!

From their stores, consultancy and B2B work, the team at Damn Plastic believe in making a damn solution to addressing the needs of climate change and reducing our environmental footprint. Their focus is making environemntally-friendly purchasing habits–which eliminate harmful single use plastics–as easy as possible.

This company is addressing global drought by reducing the amount of water farmers need for crops!22 Feb 202300:37:06

Series 2, episode 9 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing Jeff Ciudaj, the Founder and CEO of Deep Root Irrigation, a company that specialises in making a water irrigation system for farmers that reduces the amount of water needed for harvests.

The team at Deep Root Irrigation created this solution to address the need to conserve water and reduce the amount of water used in the agriculture industry. In fact, agriculture uses approximately 70% of the world’s freshwater; this industry alone can address the issue of water scarcity globally!

And this is where the team at Deep Root Irrigation comes in.

As a company, Deep Root Irrigation, or ‘DRI’ have 5 key principles their team follow: Honour God, honour family, honesty, quality and bless the world.

For Jeff and the team at DRI, this product and their mission goes beyond innovation - for the team at DRI they believe this idea came to them as there is a need on earth, now more than ever, to conserve our natural resources.

As our population continues to grow and water scarcity continues to become a problem for billions of people globally, there is a need for more creative solutions and innovations that help conserve natural resources, improve practices such as agriculture efficiently and reduce waste.

On our channel we have highlighted thousands of champions and this week’s podcast guest is the true definition of a Sustainability Champion who has inspired us with their message, values and product.

This man is on a mission to make his products from 100% ocean-bound plastics by the end of 2023!11 Feb 202300:34:54

Series 2, episode 7 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing Ben Ridding, the Founder of Ulu, a company formed because of Ben’s love for the sea. Ulu makes waterproof backpacks and tow floats with the mission to make all of its products from 100% ocean-bound plastics.

So, why does the ocean matter?

When we think about the issues we face as a result of climate change, it’s important to remember that our oceans need to be clean and protected to avoid the most severe issues that climate change is causing globally.

Our oceans feed us, regulate our climate, and generate much of the oxygen that we breathe.

We sometimes overlook the need for a clean and protected ocean when we think about sustainability. But for many people, the ocean is their playground, where they go to escape life's challenges and reconnect with nature.

Ben does not necessarily consider himself a ‘Sustainability Champion,’ but rather someone who is eco-conscious, using common sense to make a small change to address a major crisis. In this episode, Ben discusses how he plans to make all of his products from 100% ocean-bound plastic.

This is how he and the team at Ulu ensure they are making a real difference when it comes to protecting the ocean from plastic.

In this episode we discuss the plastic pollution crisis, what brands and people can do to address this problem, ‘greenwashing’ - or falsely advertising a brand is sustainable - and how Ben is trying to create awareness by educating consumers, people and manufacturers.

This Climate Change Coach helps people overcome eco-anxiety by taking action in their daily lives!25 Jan 202301:02:45

Series 2, episode 3 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

Introducing Katharina Hellmann, certified Life Coach & Climate Change Coach, who specialises in turning climate anxiety into empowered action, from helping individuals reduce their carbon footprint, live more sustainability and become happier than ever before!

After reading in the 2018 IPCC report that humanity had a mere 12 years left to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, Katharina became crippled with climate anxiety, questioning everything including her dream to have a family.

It was only after she found life coaching that she learned how to manage her emotions in a healthy way and how to transform our minds so that we can create the change we want to see in the world.

She shook off her paralysis, reclaimed her power to act and embarked on an ongoing journey to slash her family’s carbon footprint without any sacrifice to their quality of life. And this journey has been so transformative that she decided to become a Life Coach for the sole purpose of putting the most powerful tools into the hands of people who are done watching the world go up in flames without doing anything about it.

Today, she helps eco-conscious people turn climate anxiety into empowered and effective action and actually implement a sustainable low-carbon lifestyle that maximises their quality of life.

The term eco-anxiety has only recently become mainstream and it was in an attempt to combat people's fear of the environment and overcome eco-anxiety that our Founder Daniel Hartz and our team here at Sustainability Champions started this channel.

In our first of two episodes this week, we speak with Katharina Hellmann on the third episode of Series 2 to discuss her work and how she is helping individuals.

This startup-founded university is on a mission to educate and empower the change makers of tomorrow11 Jan 202300:44:09

Series 2, episode 1 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

Introducing Dr. Thomas Funke, CEO and Co-Founder of Tomorrow University, the first fully state-accredited European university to be founded by a Tech-Startup.

Tomorrow University has been educating learners through its revolutionary approach to education since 2020, with a strong focus on sustainability and technology.

When the pandemic hit, Thomas and his co-founder, Christian Rebernik, quickly realised that our current education systems are not prepared to take learning into the 21st century. Traditional classrooms were simply taken online, resulting in highly ineffective learning through endless Zoom lectures and little peer interaction.

Seeing this as an opportunity to radically change education for the better, the two founders created Tomorrow University: a remote-first university allowing students to learn from anywhere in the world at any time, and forming a real-time community in a virtual campus.

Tomorrow University offers students the opportunity to acquire 21st-century skills in sustainability, technology and entrepreneurship through its challenge-based learning model. Learners tackle real-world problems and scenarios and devise strategies to solve them. They can choose from a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, an Impact Degree in Green Tech, or participate in one of the regular Open Challenges to discover a new way of learning.

This week, we speak with Dr Thomas Funke on the first episode of our new series to discuss their higher education courses and their approach to education in sustainability.

This company is on a mission to divert 100 million tonnes of waste from landfill by 2025!21 Dec 202200:33:28

Series 1, episode 15 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing May Al-Karooni, Founder & CEO of Globechain, a company that is a leading ESG data reuse marketplace connecting enterprises with non-profits, small businesses and people to redistribute unneeded items.

Globechain generates ESG data on your impact, helping you reduce waste costs and achieve your sustainability and SDG targets.

May Al-Karooni realised no one had digitised the waste industry when the bank she worked for moved offices across the road. Rather than moving their office furniture, most of which was in perfect condition, they disposed of it all and purchased brand-new furniture.

Seeing this immense waste was a revelation; she knew there were charities and people that needed these items, and that her bank had also incurred high fees for both the disposal and repurchase of the furniture.

This revelation resulted in the birth of Globechain!

In February 2022, our founder Daniel Hartz interviewed May as she was scaling Globechain into new markets and its marketplace was beginning to be used by more users. Today, Globechain is the biggest reuse marketplace worldwide, with over 10,000 members operating in the UK, Spain, the UAE and New York.

We brought the Sustainability Champion's Podcast series back in September of this year, and Globechain has helped us facilitate this series by sponsoring our episodes! A champion we featured in 2020, two years later is now helping us showcase more champions from the world.

Introducing Som Ray, The CEO & Founder of CLIP, a company that specialises in making a portable propulsion device that is designed to transform any standard bike into an e-bike instantly!

Transportation is responsible for 24% of global direct CO₂ emissions, road vehicles account for nearly three quarters of transport emissions, and these numbers are not decreasing. This company has created a compostable and landfill biodegradable packaging solution!07 Dec 202200:51:50

Series 1, episode 13 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing Devana Ng; The Co-Founder of INVISIBLE COMPANY, a company that specialises in providing alternative packaging to different fashion brands, e-commerce, logistics and retails to replace the conventional packaging.

Their solution is water-soluble, compostable and landfill biodegradable packaging which is called #INVISIBLEBAG. This packaging doesn’t contain PP, PE, PS, PVC plastic and is Non-toxic to the environment!

The story behind Invisible Company began in 2018 when Co-Founder Devana and her husband Flavienthrough their love and passion for hiking, especially in the mountains in Hong Kong.

It was through this passion booth Devana and Flavien discovered they were cleaning up trails on their hikes, most of which included plastic waste and rubbish bags.

Devana and Flavien discovered that all the packaging they found was neither recycled nor biodegradable. They wanted to find a way to reduce waste at the source with an alternative solution which is not harmful to our environment. Hence, in 2020, they started researching and created this water-soluble material and design that makes up their INVISIBLE BAG packaging.

Since then, Invisible Company has started to work with over 700 brands worldwide, mostly in fashion, with the goal to create a greener online shopping experience for logistics companies and e-commerce brands.

Both Founders Devana and Flavien are passionate about addressing the needs of climate change and for Insviable Company, they are optimistic that their packaging solution will make a small change to both businesses and consumers, but make a big impact on the environment!

This team aims to demystify the circular economy and design.26 Nov 202201:01:52

Series 1, episode 11 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

Introducing Michael Hirschhorn, CEO and Founder at Mebl Furniture & Scarlette Tapp, Executive Director at The Sustainable Furnishings Council.

Michael & Scarlette work together to create and publish The Circular Design Glossary, a glossary of terms that provides definitions on specific language used in the circular economy. The idea is to help the furniture industry move towards circular thinking and design  of furniture products both in the US and around the world.

The very concept of sustainability is based on meeting the various needs of the present without compromising the possibilities of future generations. But what does furniture design have to do with the circular economy? Basically everything because they go together! Design is the starting point of the production chain of every piece of furniture.

WIth The Glossary, both Michael & Scarlette are on a mission to help more businesses within the furnishings industry to reuse and recycle different materials as many times as possible, therebye avoiding unnecessary pollution and waste, while simultaneously  promoting values of social and environmental responsibilities, both with their members and nonmembers.

Michael, Scarlette and the team behind The Glossary want to feature inspiring circular-design applications from sofas to tables to lighting. The Glossary illustrates real-life solutions to today’s wasteful linear ‘take-make-waste’ way of living.

The Circular Design Glossary is an independent, non-sponsored publication featuring:

  1. 40+ circular design concepts, case studies and photographs
  2. Emerging and established designers
  3. Innovative furniture/furnishings companies
  4. Insights, inspiration and concrete applications for practitioners

This week we speak with both Micahel and Scarlette on our eleventh podcast episode to discuss their Glossary publication and the concepts behind a circular approach to the furnishing industry.

This company created an entire product line of condiments that are made from quality ingredients from organic farmers!24 Nov 202200:58:48

Series 1, episode 10 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

In life only two things matter: Food & love.

Well, that's according to the team at Curtice Brothers!

Introducing Mario Bauer, Founder of Curtice Brothers and Simon Korn, Production Manager at Curtice Brothers.

Curtice Brothers is a company that created an entire product line of condiments made from quality ingredients from organic farmers!

The team at Curtice Brothers cooked, experimented with the wildest recipes, tasted the worst and the best outcomes, drank wine, danced in the kitchen and learned how to squeeze 15 tomatoes into one small bottle. Although you can't call it ketchup yet, the outcome is promising.

Mario, the Founder of Curtice Brothers, had this crazy idea of creating a healthier and better ketchup that would exceed the expectations of his epicure friends – some of them sommeliers, chefs of upscale restaurants and the pampered lovers of good food.

By sourcing quality ingredients from some of the best organic farms, they don’t compromise a single step towards making a ketchup that they are proud to serve. And, as part of that, they work towards a more sustainable environment through the ingredients they source and make their condiments from!

Certified vegan and gluten-free, this brand's condiments are packaged in glass bottles, encouraging their customers to reuse their bottles with their orders or for other means in the kitchen!

This company is changing everything we know about wind turbines!16 Nov 202200:51:43

Series 1, episode 9 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing Cheryl and Chris Moore, the Co-Founders and inventors of Harmony Turbines, a company that was founded with the idea to create a simple, efficient and affordable residential wind turbine that could meet the needs of most homeowners.

Founded in August 2020, Harmony Turbines have the goal of developing a wind turbine solution that can achieve mass adoption in the residential marketplace by addressing the deficiencies that are often overlooked by current wind turbines.

Chris Moore, Co-Founder of Harmony Turbines, is no stranger to the Clean Energy R&D space. Since 1998, he has worked with many teams and organisations to create innovative solutions for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

From his experiences, he has seen first-hand the issues with the current wind turbine models and is determined to create a more effective solution.

So what are the disadvantages of conventional wind turbines and why are Harmony Turbines looking to innovate and improve upon the existing models?

Although wind energy is a renewable, greener option of energy, it too still has its limitations. For example, many turbines pose a threat to the surrounding wildlife. Flying birds and bats whose habitats or migratory paths pass through turbines can be injured or killed if they fly under the blades of a turbine.

What’s more is that many turbines come with an expensive upfront cost and can, in some cases, be unreliable/unpredictable.

With Chris and Cheryl’s solution, they are looking to address these problems with Harmony Turbines and make clean, green energy more efficient and cost-effective.

Their goal is simple: they want to help make the world a better place. And, in their view, it starts with giving more people the ‘power’ to change the world.

An inspiring and innovative couple, this week we speak with both Cheryl and Chris on our ninth podcast episode to discuss their product and their current Kickstarter campaign.

This company is improving water efficiency to prevent over-consumption in water-scarce areas09 Nov 202200:37:52

Series 1, episode 8 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

Introducing Yasmine Ben Miloud, the Co-Founder and Head of Marketing at Water-Sec.

At present; Tunisia is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. In 2017,  367 cubic metres (m3) of water were available per capita to almost 12 million inhabitants, compared to a regional average of 526 m3 and a global average of 5,700 m3.

This lack of access to water has meant many Tunisians live with water curfews in the south and drought in many parts of the country.

Water-Sec was born to tackle the issue of water scarcity in Tunisia and the wider MENA countries. By offering a technological solution to monitor the water consumption of people and organisations, to help save the water used daily and face resource scarcity concerns.

This week COP27 will be held in the MENA region in Egypt and our Founder Daniel Hartz will be at COP27 speaking with sustainability champions from around the world to discuss the climate problems we all face and the solutions these champions are creating.

One of these champions is the team at Water-Sec and their Founder & Head of Marketing Yasmine Ben Miloud.

This company saves 96,000 hides from landfill by turning waste into leather for upholstery!02 Nov 202200:56:46

Series 1, episode 6 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast 🎙

What is the environmental cost of producing leather? Is it ethical to wear leather? Is leather considered sustainable?

The leather industry is one of many industries that brings about much conversation surrounding its ethics, its practices, its environmental impact and whether it is a material that is actually sustainable.

As a channel, we always want to meet new people and showcase their innovations and activism to a wider audience. We always aim to get their perspectives and understand their views on topics and issues that affect all of us and the environment we live in.

A different type of post to what we are used to here at Sustainability Champions; introducing Jack Prause, CEO of Cortina Leathers. Cortina Leathers started in 1903 and since then has become a market leader, with their leathers being made for clients in a range of markets globally from hospitality, workspaces, the automotive & aviation industries and residential spaces. With a large number of clients around the globe, you may have sat on a chair that has been upholstered with leather made by Cortina Leathers!

On this week’s podcast, our Founder Daniel Hartz speaks to the CEO at Cortina Leathers to discuss more widely the issues within the leather industry and explore the subject of whether or not leather is a sustainable fabric.

To be able to better answer this question, we wanted to speak with an industry leader and get their view, while also learning more about the industry itself.

In this episode, it was fascinating to hear about Cortina Leathers Environmental Stewardship initiative and learning about the certifications Cortina has received over the years from Future-Fit Business, SCS Global and ISO.

Are you interested in joining the conversation on whether leather is sustainable? We will be sending Jack Prause our listeners' questions after this episode goes live. You can send your questions and thoughts to our Marketing Lead Peter at peter@sustainabilitychampions.com

This company is removing harmful carbon from the air with the aim to get the world to net zero and keep global warming below 1.5°C26 Oct 202200:45:16

Series 1, episode 5 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Climeworks has been on a journey toward a solution that would empower everyone to take climate action.

Founded in 2009 by two Co-Founders Jan and Christoph, who met on their first day of university at ETH Zurich.

Sharing a passion for alpine sports and spending time in the Swiss Alps, they experienced the effects of climate change first-hand. Shocked by the retreat of the glaciers, they vowed to do everything they could to tackle climate change.

Combining their engineering expertise, they have created a technology called direct air capture, a way to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air. As a result, Climeworks was formed and is now the leader in direct air capture (DAC) technology.

So why direct air capture?

In recent years, climate action has experienced a paradigm shift. It’s now recognized that drastically reducing emissions alone won’t be enough to halt climate change. The IPCC reports show that drastic emissions reductions are more important than ever, but on top of this, carbon dioxide removal is needed to get the world to net zero and keep global warming below 1.5 °C.

But it’s no longer just the scientists saying this; individuals and businesses also agree. We need many carbon dioxide removal solutions working together to prevent further global warming and restore balance to our climate. The global capacity to store carbon dioxide is vast and lies between 5 and 30 trillion tons.

As a carbon dioxide removal solution, Climeworks’ direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) is particularly effective because it’s highly efficient, permanent, safe, and measurable.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5°C, humanity must remove around 5 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the air annually by mid-century and 17 billion tons by 2100. And Climeworks believes direct air capture will play a significant role in achieving these goals.

This man diverted 850,000 KGs of waste from landfill; aims to prevent 1M kgs in 2022!19 Oct 202200:57:12

Series 1, episode 4 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙

Introducing Anthony Levy, Founder & CEO of Circularity First a company that specialises in helping businesses design, build, manage and quantify IT infrastructures with a circular mindset.

Circularity First Group have been working across sustainable IT for over 14 years. At their origin, they knew that systematic change was required. As the wider business community assesses its carbon footprint, others are realising it too.

Numbers suggest that IT contributes between 5% and 20% to a company’s Scope 3 carbon footprint. With 80% of that carbon coming from manufacturing, Circularity First has extended the life of what we have and stemmed the tide on new. For their founder and their team, it’s their belief that ‘It’s now or never.’

Circularity First works with both vendors and customers and over 14 years have achieved:

- Preventing 850,000 KGs of technology equipment from becoming eWaste, the equivalent of 6 blue whales.

- This year, 2022 Circularity First is on track to prevent 1M KGs from ending up in landfill

- Of the networking products they sell, 99% are sourced from manufactured, reused and redeployed authorised programmes.

- As a company, they aim to be carbon neutral by the end of 2022.

- Using science-based targets they also aim to be net zero by 2030.

In this episode, the CEO of Circularity First, Anthony Levy raises an interesting point; ‘How many sustainable IT companies can we name?’ As an industry, it is contributing to massive energy use & carbon footprint, requires extensive mining for minerals, and leaves an environmental cost with roughly $62.5 billion of electronic waste thrown away each year.

A conversation we have not addressed yet on this channel, we are delighted to announce that this week’s podcast episode will look at how the industry can be more circular, and environmentally friendly and how Circularity First aims to address the main issues centred on the industry over the coming years.
