The world can shift in a weekend, and the hard part is not buying gear. The hard part is knowing what you can actually do when you’re tired, scared, and responsible for other people. We take a practical, step-by-step look at emergency preparedness and personal protection training, using the same approach we teach in class: build capability in small pieces, and make choices you can live with.
We start with a personal inventory that goes beyond wishful thinking. Health, mobility, medications, and medical needs like insulin or an EpiPen shape every evacuation and shelter plan. We also talk about emotional preparation and family emergency planning, because the worst time to negotiate roles and responsibilities is when the ground is shaking or the smoke is already in the air. Money matters too, so we dig into budgeting and prioritizing, including why backup power and a solar generator can be worth considering when the grid goes down first.
From there, we get real about human nature after a disaster. Adrenaline crashes can leave you drowsy and vulnerable, and opportunistic crime can appear fast. You’ll hear what a “blitz attack” looks like, why situational awareness is your best time buffer, and how scams can show up in plain sight. We round it out with preparedness food planning, comparing freeze-dried food storage and portability with the downsides of MREs, then shift into first aid readiness, including why I recommend Stop the Bleed training and the basics of gloves and biohazard handling.
If you want a calm, realistic path to disaster readiness, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the training.

Share the takeaways from my live class at SOU this January. Excerpts highlight: A store-bought survival kit full of tiny bandages and cotton puffs is funny until someone’s bleeding. That hard-won moment kicks off a practical tour through modern preparedness: what to pack, what to skip, and how to stay effective when plans collide with reality. We share field-tested upgrades across three missions—staying home, getting home, and surviving in your car—so your gear works where life actually happens: shelters, motels, closed highways, smoky skies, and dark neighborhoods.
We dig into the shift from the old three-day rule to a smarter thirty-day baseline and show how to build modular kits that stack like Legos. You’ll learn why neutral “gray” bags reduce risk, how to stage essentials for fast exits, and where redundancy matters most (yes, carry two can openers). We also discuss lighting strategy: compact chem lights, powerful rechargeable flashlights that double as deterrents, and simple squeeze torches that keep shining when batteries die.

You are invited to join us for the kick-off of our new weekly Podcast here at RTBAV-PPT. Last months flurry of "Bug Out Bag" sales was the tip of the iceberg. It got us to thinking. What kind of bag do you need for where you live? What kind of events are you likely to encounter? Then let's look at the psychological aspects of it. Having it and being able to use it effectively are two different things. This all came into play for one of the team here Bill Bateman, when the Northridge earthquake struck. He went for cover first, then the Bug Out Bag he had prepared and got quite a surprise. It was a life-changing lesson. The bag is really just a first step, and it may be different for each of us. Don't just throw money at a problem. Buy smart. Tune in over the next 8 weeks and explore "Beyond the Bag."

A short outage can be annoying; a long one can upend your life. We open the door to a calmer, more capable approach to preparedness by focusing on the two weak links that fail first after a crisis: water and power. With our upcoming OLLI course as the backdrop, we map a practical path from “I should get ready” to “I can handle thirty days.”
We start with water because scarcity and contamination now collide more often. You’ll hear a clear breakdown of collection and storage fundamentals, why purification isn’t the same as removing chemicals, and how to layer treatment with sediment filters, activated carbon, boiling or UV, and when to consider reverse osmosis. We point to trusted resources and emphasize simple routines that keep your supply fresh and safe.
Then we shift to electricity: choosing the right portable solar power stations, matching watt-hours to your actual loads, and using open-box and seasonal deals to stretch your budget. From 750 to 2000 watt setups, we share where solar shines—quiet backup for lights, comms, laptops, and compact fridges—and how to size panels and plan multiple charging paths. The goal isn’t a bunker; it’s reliable, everyday capability you use and understand.
Finally, we turn gift cards and post-holiday sales into durable wins by shopping local for gear you’ll use weekly: water containers, headlamps, first aid, and layers that hold up. Throughout, we frame preparedness as being your own first responder, not a caricature—calm, skilled, and ready for thirty days of self-sufficiency. If this resonates, tap follow, share this with someone who could use a nudge, and leave a quick review telling us your top priority this month: water or power?

Join me, Bill Bateman, and the Refuse to be a Victim team as we lay bare the insidious world of scams, especially those that rear their ugly heads during tax season. We don't just stop at attempted scare tactics; you'll be armed with actionable advice on ramping up your security measures, like the fortification of your passwords, to shield your hard-earned cash from these con artists. Ever been caught off-guard by an emergency with nothing but a stale granola bar to get you through? Bill Bateman here, and I'm about to change that for you. I recently faced the great water pouch leak debacle in my cars emergency kit, and it made me realize just how vital it is to keep those survival supplies in check. Tune in as I walk you through the dos and don'ts of seasonal car emergency kit management, ensuring your food, water, and batteries are in top-notch condition. We're talking busted water filters, pesky battery corrosion, and yes, even how to ensure your water doesn't turn your trunk into an unintended aquarium.
Strap in as we shift gears to the homefront where the rotation and reevaluation of your emergency stash can mean the difference between calm and chaos. You'll learn why your freezer food might need a refresh, which batteries can be life savers, and how a solar generator could be your new best friend. And with summer on the horizon, it's not just about beating the heat but being prepared for it—with well-organized, accessible supplies. Don't forget, our community classes at Retired Guy Productions are in full swing, offering a mix of safety skills and good old-fashioned camaraderie. So, grab your notepad, and let's make sure you're ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way!

Imagine being equipped with the know-how to handle the aftermath of a bleeding injury—whether it's a minor scrape or a deep cut. That's exactly what you'll grasp in this episode as Bill Bateman walks you through the essential steps of first aid and wound care. Bill shares his expertise on the ABCs of emergency response, emphasizing the importance of airway, breathing, and circulation, and guides us on how to tackle bleeding with confidence. Moreover, he highlights the life-saving Stop the Bleed program by the Ashland Fire Department, reminding us that cleaning wounds and seeking medical help is paramount. Bill's advice doesn't stop there; he knows that teaching others and being self-sufficient is vital in a crisis, and he discusses the need for two types of first aid kits—outlining what essentials your "boo-boo kit" should contain.
In our second segment, we get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a first aid kit effective, from the practicality of vet wrap to the psychological comfort provided by fun bandages for all ages. Bill's insights into the items your kit should never be without, like gauze pads of various sizes and saline solution, are invaluable. He also navigates us through the importance of professional medical training and consulting healthcare experts for emergencies. By the end of this discussion, you'll not only be motivated to ensure your kit is up to scratch, but you'll also understand why looking at product ratings is crucial for emergency readiness—not just for minor issues. This episode is teeming with actionable advice that could make a critical difference when care is needed most.

Last time we talked about a car tire, flat and frozen to the street in two inches of ice. That set off an interesting series of events and ideas. This week we will discuss Donut Spare tires, "Spare Tire in a Can", and NO spare tires. Plus portable air pumps, and battery jump starters.
I'll also give you some suggestions on Wound Care as a preview to next week's more in-depth segment. I'm also giving my Podiatrist a shout-out for some excellent work and getting me back on my feet-literally.
We will finish off the episode with some good news, some questionable business decisions I've observed, and class reminders for this month.

It was a cold mess out there this past week and we went to the reserves to see what information we had to share. In checking, I found three prior podcasts about dealing with cold weather, emergency heat, and emergency power. We wanted to share those with you to keep you prepared.
I also discussed some of the unexpected problems that come up when the Internet goes down in an Internet-based society. All that plus some classes that will be happening in the second half of the month that you may find interesting!

Let's take a look at what's going on due to the weather as a perfect example of why we need to be prepared. (Over 400 Thousand homes without power on the East Coast.) I'll also send up a flare on the EMP question. I know they are a serious issue, but the information is so divisive I am hard-pressed to make a recommendation. I need your help.
I have some follow-up on the topic of regenerative farms and "buying local", some local shopping tips, and as promised, where to order some Oregon Buffalo. I've also got some information on the Refuse to Be a Victim team, and why you should be coming to see us for your training.

Smart Survival Stocking Stuffers And Real-World Readiness
Ten days before Christmas is the perfect moment to trade forgettable gadgets for gear that actually helps when plans fall apart. We dive into a no-nonsense holiday guide anchored in field-tested essentials: tiny can openers that never quit, emergency blankets that truly keep you warm, pocket flashlights bright enough to trust, and weatherproof notebooks that safeguard critical details when your phone is dead or soaked. The goal is simple—give useful tools that make loved ones more capable tomorrow than they were today.
We take a hard look at food and water strategy so gifts don’t gather dust. You’ll hear why dehydrated meals should be taste-tested now, how to prevent leaky trunk disasters, and when a standalone water filter like the Sawyer Mini beats a single-user bottle. We also get practical about money: small bills tucked in separate envelopes, a handful of coins to smooth barters, and a cautious view of silver eagles as a hedge rather than a plan. If your family isn’t into prepping, you’ll get friendly, low-intimidation ideas—a compact filter, a reliable pocket knife, or a real compass with a quick lesson on local declination—that spark interest without pressure.
We close by calling out a critical truth: life-saving tools are not where you cut costs. A trusted tourniquet and solid shears beat bargain-bin versions every time. For those watching budgets, a well-aimed gift card plus post-holiday sales can unlock the good stuff without overspending. Subscribe for more practical readiness, share this with the person who needs a sensible list, and leave a review telling us the one gift you’re adding to your kit this year.

Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you prefer, to everyone out there from all of us.
My wife and I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. We did all the Touristy things- We took the double-decker bus tour and had a memorable seafood lunch at Dragos in the Hilton. Not only was the lunch great but included some of the BEST gumbo we've ever had.
Along with that was the worst excuse for a Po Bo I have eaten at the French market. Gak! We watched a TV show filming on Bourbon Street while having a libation, from the back of a pedicab. Exceptional driver and guide. We had some alligator on a stick. I even managed to decorate my dark slacks with the powered sugar from a plate full of Benigets.
Well good for us. What's the point? Well despite it being in the low 50’s temperature-wise and too cold for gators, and the water lower than normal, we still had a series of great adventures thanks to some great people.
When it is said and done, it is all about the people. Time for a look back at some of the lessons from last year and some thoughts on getting into 2024
(And by the way: That lake I was trying to pronounce is: Cataouatche. The Swamp Tour is Ragin' Cajun and located in Luling, LA.)

Each month I review all kinds of information. I came acorss some notes I'd made perviously about some items worth mentioning. I'm going to be sharing information and a few links to things thatI think are useful.
Medical information is pricesless and I'm including a link to a site I like quite a bit. It is run by an actual Doctor and Nurse and has all kind of useful information to share. The Stie is Doom and Bloom and I think it is worth a look. Not only does it offer medical information, but articles like What To Barter Off The Grid?
I'll be sharing news on our newly redesigned website and improved class booking for the coming year, and somequick stocking stuffer suggestons for gift giving. Be safe and look out for each other this busy Holiday Season.

The topic of Radiation and how to deal with it safely is a very deep dive. I shared links last week and I'm finalizing the topic here by stepping back and urging you to follow up and get first-hand training and product information. It is too complicated and important to hear secondhand. I'm including some new information on Rsperatiors or Gas Mask to designed to be used in an emergency situation.
Now is an excellent time of year to take advantage of Black Friday sales to fill in any holes in your supply cupboard. It also occurred to me that some of my listeners may not be familiar with Thanksgiving, as it is an American Holiday.
We have news on Classes, Gift certificates, and a Fruitcake that got passed back and forth for over 12 years. Is it still good? Was it EVER good is the question?
A very Happy Holiday season to everyone in our family.

To be able to deal with a problem, especially a scary one, I have found you have to look it in the eye, say its name, and tell it to **** off. Then you can deal with it. The thought of a bomb, or a "radiation event" is like that. OK. We've named our fear.
Let's begin to identify what steps we can take. I'm sharing resources to dig into. The first two have a wealth of information on useful steps to take and reliable product information. I'm including information about ways to measure radiation and the medication you may encounter if such a scenario were to take place.
It is a big topic, so I will also be going back next week. I also want to touch on EMP and RDIF issues. (For some reason the two seem to be linked.)
I also have class information and news on gift certificates. Thanks to my wife, I've included the address along with my invitation to come visit the range.

This week I'm looking at the more advanced aspects of prepping in the medical area. Because it is a serious area of study, the standard disclaimer applies: I'm not a healthcare professional and this is not medical advice. Speak to your healthcare practitioner before making any changes as they can have very serious implications.
I'll be sharing some resources for emergency medications, techniques for emergency treatments, and how to create survival caches. This is intended to be a basic introduction to the topic and will require additional research and effort to use properly on your part to be useful.
I'll also have information on classes, and Gift Certificates for the upcoming holiday season.

His name is Todd and he reminded me that building a plan is the key part of the Bug Out Bag and it can be pretty overwhelming at the start. He had some good ideas to share. It seems we are seeing more and more reports of emergencies lately. When we do, one of the common issues is the loss of power to the home. There are an increasing number of choices when it comes to choosing a source of backup power. It is a deep subject and the key to success is research and planning. It can be confusing and it doesn't matter if you go Gasoline Generator, Solar backup, or some of the new alternate systems. Your first task is to decide what you are going to keep running. Let's go over the basics.
I'll also talk about two really good things that happened this week to brighten my attitude and perhaps can help you with that as well. All that plus new classes are coming together nicely.

First frost hit and we took the hint: it’s time to rethink not just jackets and batteries, but the way we prep, train, and carry ourselves through the season. We start with a fall gear audit—simple steps that pay off fast, like checking battery corrosion, rotating food, and pulling forgotten gadgets from the “oh yeah” drawer. From there we get practical about privacy with Faraday phone sleeves, weighing real‑world benefits in crowded spaces against the hype, and we share how to test them in a calm, rational way.
Lighting becomes an unsung hero. Today’s headlamps are lighter, USB‑powered, and red‑light capable, making them ideal for late dog walks, campsite tasks, and first aid when both hands must stay free. We talk through tradeoffs, including how to avoid spotlighting your face at distance, and why neck‑worn lights can be a smart alternative. Then we pivot to what really changes outcomes: time. The same patience that makes a great sauce makes durable skills. We walk through a safer path for new shooters and returning owners—non‑ballistic self‑defense, fundamentals of safe handling, and only then concealed carry law, holsters, and everyday decision‑making.
Along the way we explain why firearm fit matters more than brand hype, how range passes encourage consistent, perfect practice, and how to avoid locking in bad habits you picked up from well‑meaning advice at the bench. We emphasize avoidance and critical thinking as the highest form of self‑defense, and share how families can turn range time into real bonding and steady progress. If you’re upgrading your kit, starting your training, or gifting confidence to someone you care about, this conversation gives you a clear, humane roadmap to do it right.
If this resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who needs a smarter start, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. Tell us: what’s the first piece of gear or training you’re upgrading this season?

September is National Preparedness Month, and it couldn't have come at a better time. August has been a veritable &^%$ Storm of disasters. The tragedy in Lahina, blistering heat and drought, and fires up and down the West Coast have stressed everyone to the limit. There are some common themes too. A report by our local County officials points out that "Milling" is an issue. People are told to leave and when officers check 30 minutes later they find folks haven’t moved. Why? They believe that it won't happen here. Or even worse…won't happen again. There is a reoccurring theme of missed/incomplete…even non-existent communication of danger, and blame back and forth. One side says," Impossible to warn everyone" countered by charges of "no warnings being given". Add to that water shortages and the issues with powerlines.
Family, we need to slow down, get focused, and begin to take control of our own lives. Work to get decisions made. Do not wait to be led. Make sure you can be self-sufficient and stand on your own for 30 days. The Bug Out bag is the first step in that process.

Sometimes you head off in one direction on a project and something catches your attention and you are "down the rabbit hole", moving in a new direction. I was planning on talking about being able to help first responders if you are unable to speak. I was looking at the medical dog tags I wear and the connection to Memorial Day was too strong. The irony of speaking for those who can no longer speak for themselves was a bit too strong, as well as the connection to the aftermath of the Civil War.
