Broken Wings: Planning for When You're Down18 Jun 202500:17:01

Send us a text

A critical moment of vulnerability awaits us all. That moment when we—the prepared ones, the designated responders—find ourselves suddenly incapacitated during an emergency. What happens when you can't be the hero in your own story?

As we celebrate our 99th episode and over 10,000 downloads, we're tackling this often-overlooked aspect of preparedness. Using the example of someone recovering from open-heart surgery who faces sternal precautions (unable to lift, push, or even dress normally), we explore how quickly an emergency can transform when the caregiver becomes the patient.

Have you considered what would happen if you broke your leg during an evacuation? Or if you received CPR, which often cracks the sternum? Would your group or family know how to apply a tourniquet correctly, treat shock, or manage severe bleeding without your guidance? These aren't comfortable questions, but they're essential ones.

Quality matters tremendously in emergency situations. As we emphasize, "You don't want a discount steak and you don't want a discount tourniquet." Your life could depend on proper training and equipment distributed among multiple capable hands. Beyond physical preparedness, we also discuss the psychological aspects of emergencies—managing hysteria, fear responses, and group dynamics when strangers might join your circle during a crisis.

Looking forward to our milestone 100th episode, we're shifting our focus toward long-term resilience and 30-day self-sufficiency as the new minimum standard. Join us as we continue exploring survival beyond the typical 72-hour bug out bag mentality. What questions do you have about preparing for your own vulnerability in crisis situations? Send them our way as we embark on this next chapter together.

Reminder: Keep your medications together in one location to collect them quickly, as well a container or bag to transport them.

Have a list of all meds on the Fridge. Good for you to grab. Very useful for emergency responders. Typed is best.

When Everyday Incidents Become Survival Lessons11 May 202500:17:00

Send us a text

When a car crashed into the loading dock of a restaurant while I was having lunch, it sparked an important realization—I'd forgotten to check the exits when I walked in. This simple oversight highlights how easily we neglect situational awareness in our daily routines.

Preparedness isn't just about stockpiling supplies; it's about developing habits that keep you safe in any environment. Whether entering a restaurant, grocery store, or public space, take a moment to observe who's there, what they're doing, where the exits are, and what resources might be available. Are people behaving normally? Is security unusually tight? These environmental cues provide valuable information about potential risks and should influence your decisions.

The grocery store landscape has changed dramatically in recent months—emptier shelves, modified hours, items locked behind cases, and increased security presence. These shifts reflect our changing society and underscore the importance of having both supplies and skills. Do you know how to cook rice from scratch? Can you bake bread without a recipe? Many younger people lack these fundamental survival skills, leaving them vulnerable during extended emergencies. The time to develop these abilities is now, when resources are available and you have time to practice, not during a crisis when internet tutorials are inaccessible.

Your homework is twofold: evaluate your situational awareness practices and assess your emergency preparedness, both in supplies and knowledge. Include your entire family in this process—everyone needs basic skills and understanding. Whether you're a seasoned prepper or just starting out, remember that awareness and preparation are ongoing practices, not one-time events. Want to enhance your preparedness skills? Come check out our range classes covering everything from non-ballistic self-defense to advanced tactical training. Your future self will thank you for the time invested today.

Beyond the Bugout Bag: Prepping for Spring20 Apr 202500:18:54

Send us a text

Spring brings a critical transition period for anyone concerned with self-reliance and emergency preparedness. The warming weather signals it's time to reevaluate your supplies, update your plans, and reconsider your approach to personal safety in an increasingly uncertain world.

The warning signs at local grocery stores can't be ignored—shelves with growing gaps, eggs priced at $11 a dozen, increased security measures for everyday items, and fewer staff. These aren't reasons to panic, but practical indicators that thoughtful preparation now can prevent hardship later. As one prepper wisely notes, the goal isn't to hoard 500 packages of toilet paper, but to methodically build resilience through careful planning.

Power solutions deserve special attention, with more preparedness-minded individuals shifting to solar options that avoid the storage challenges and noise signature of gas generators. Food preservation strategies gain importance during power disruptions, with innovative approaches like utilizing medical-grade ice packs to extend refrigeration capabilities. The hierarchy of emergency food consumption (refrigerated items first, frozen foods next, and dehydrated supplies last) maximizes resources during extended emergencies. Don't overlook the importance of seasonings—spices like black pepper, cinnamon, and cayenne not only make survival food more palatable but also offer medicinal benefits.

Perhaps most significantly, the philosophy of preparedness continues evolving beyond political boundaries. The lone wolf survivalist model gives way to community-based resilience, recognizing that diverse skills within a prepared network provide greater security than any individual could achieve alone. As one preparedness expert bluntly observes, "You may have 10,000 rounds of ammunition, but if you break your leg and nobody helps you, you're going to get gangrene and die." True resilience comes from balancing self-sufficiency with strategic community connections.

Ready to strengthen your preparedness posture this spring? Check out resources like the Happy Prepper's "37 Foods to Hoard Before a Crisis" and consider which skills your personal preparedness network might be missing.

How to Address Wound Care Effectively13 Feb 202400:20:28

Send us a text

Imagine being equipped with the know-how to handle the aftermath of a bleeding injury—whether it's a minor scrape or a deep cut. That's exactly what you'll grasp in this episode as Bill Bateman walks you through the essential steps of first aid and wound care. Bill shares his expertise on the ABCs of emergency response, emphasizing the importance of airway, breathing, and circulation, and guides us on how to tackle bleeding with confidence. Moreover, he highlights the life-saving Stop the Bleed program by the Ashland Fire Department, reminding us that cleaning wounds and seeking medical help is paramount. Bill's advice doesn't stop there; he knows that teaching others and being self-sufficient is vital in a crisis, and he discusses the need for two types of first aid kits—outlining what essentials your "boo-boo kit" should contain.

In our second segment, we get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a first aid kit effective, from the practicality of vet wrap to the psychological comfort provided by fun bandages for all ages. Bill's insights into the items your kit should never be without, like gauze pads of various sizes and saline solution, are invaluable. He also navigates us through the importance of professional medical training and consulting healthcare experts for emergencies. By the end of this discussion, you'll not only be motivated to ensure your kit is up to scratch, but you'll also understand why looking at product ratings is crucial for emergency readiness—not just for minor issues. This episode is teeming with actionable advice that could make a critical difference when care is needed most.

Finally Thawed out and Back on my feet again!05 Feb 202400:21:01

Last time we talked about a car tire, flat and frozen to the street in two inches of ice. That set off an interesting series of events and ideas. This week we will discuss Donut Spare tires, "Spare Tire in a Can", and NO spare tires. Plus portable air pumps, and battery jump starters.

I'll also give you some suggestions on Wound Care as a preview to next week's more in-depth segment.  I'm also giving my Podiatrist a shout-out for some excellent work and getting me back on my feet-literally.

We will finish off the episode with some good news, some questionable business decisions I've observed, and class reminders for this month.

Let's take a look at what's going on due to the weather as a perfect example of why we need to be prepared. (Over 400 Thousand homes without power on the East Coast.) I'll also send up a flare on the EMP question. I know they are a serious issue, but the information is so divisive I am hard-pressed to make a recommendation. I need your help.

I have some follow-up on the topic of regenerative farms and "buying local", some local shopping tips, and as promised, where to order some Oregon Buffalo. I've also got some information on the Refuse to Be a Victim  team, and why you should be coming to see us for your training.

L Look at some suggestions gathered   to get you ready for the coming year. Im feelling things will be happening a LOT faster than they have in the past and will be more intesnse both in duration and impact.
Are you prepared not only with  food and water, but  fiscally? Are yo spending wha tyou have on the right products? Lets take a look at what we are buying, andn where we are buying  it as well .Farm stores and pre purchasng beef  locally are just two ways to get aheda on both filling the pantry and  keeping a good eye on the bank account for the coming year ahead.

It about a mind set. It goes to being as self  sufficent as possible for as long as you can, regardless of "why" that happens.

Taking time to step back and look at a few of the changes in 2023, and say goodbye to some of the people we lost over the past year.  Next week I'll be taking a look forward to the coming year and some of the changes I predict.
A reminder on the updated class schedule for the new year and a thank you to those of you who took advantage of our Gift Certificates for the Holidays. ( You can get them anytime, and they make great gifts for Birthdays and Anniversaries.)

Be Safe and have a good New Year! See you in 2024!

Thoughts from a Swamp Boat11 Dec 202300:20:59

Send us a text

Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you prefer, to everyone out there from all of us.

My wife and I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. We did all the Touristy things- We took the double-decker bus tour and had a memorable seafood lunch at Dragos in the Hilton. Not only was the lunch great but included some of the BEST gumbo we've ever had.

Along with that was the worst excuse for a Po Bo I have eaten at the French market. Gak! We watched a TV show filming on Bourbon Street while having a libation, from the back of a pedicab. Exceptional driver and guide. We had some alligator on a stick. I even managed to decorate my dark slacks with the powered sugar from a plate full of Benigets.

Well good for us.  What's the point? Well despite it being in the low 50’s temperature-wise and too cold for gators, and the water lower than normal, we still had a series of great adventures thanks to some great people.

When it is said and done, it is all about the people.  Time for a look back at  some of the lessons from last year and some thoughts on getting into  2024

(And by the way: That lake I was trying to pronounce is: Cataouatche. The Swamp Tour  is Ragin' Cajun and located in Luling, LA.)

Things worth Mentioning02 Dec 202300:18:57

Send us a text

Each  month I review all kinds of information. I came acorss some notes I'd made perviously about some items  worth mentioning. I'm  going to be sharing information and a few links to things thatI think  are useful.

Medical information is pricesless and I'm including a link to a site I like  quite a bit. It is run by  an actual Doctor and Nurse and has all kind of useful  information to share. The Stie is  Doom and Bloom and I think it is worth a look. Not only does it offer medical information, but articles like What To Barter Off The Grid?

I also found an interesting  read on People to Avoid in a Collapsed World at Urban Survival.  That includes s certain crazy Uncles at Holiday dinners.

I'll be sharing news on our newly redesigned website and improved class booking  for the coming year, and somequick stocking stuffer suggestons for  gift giving. Be safe and look out for each other this busy Holiday Season.

Radiation Wrap Up and Pre Holilday Planning21 Nov 202300:23:47

Send us a text

The topic of Radiation and how to deal with it safely is a  very deep dive. I shared links last week and I'm finalizing the topic here by stepping back and urging you to follow up and get first-hand training and product information. It is too complicated and important to hear secondhand. I'm including some new information on Rsperatiors or Gas Mask to designed to be used in an emergency situation.

Now is an excellent time of year to take advantage of Black Friday sales to fill in any holes in your supply cupboard. It also occurred to me that some of my listeners may not be familiar with Thanksgiving, as it is an American Holiday.

We have news on Classes, Gift certificates, and a Fruitcake that got passed back and forth for over 12 years. Is it still good? Was it EVER good is the question?

A very Happy Holiday season to everyone in our family.

Say My Name.02 Nov 202300:24:41

Send us a text

To be able to deal with a problem, especially a scary one, I have found you have to look it in the eye, say its name, and tell it to **** off.  Then you can deal with it. The thought of a bomb, or a "radiation event" is like that.  OK. We've named our fear.

Let's begin to identify what steps we can take. I'm sharing resources to dig into. The first two have a wealth of information on useful steps to take and reliable product information. I'm including information about ways to measure radiation and the medication you may encounter if such a scenario were to take place.

It is a big topic, so I will also be going back next week. I also want to touch on EMP and RDIF  issues. (For some reason the two seem to be linked.)

I also have class information and news on gift certificates.  Thanks to my wife, I've included the address along with my invitation to come visit the range.

You've got homework family.

Start Small on your Prepping Journey07 Mar 202500:25:18

A Video Version is also available on YouTube

A harrowing survival story opens this eye-opening episode as we learn how a 79-year-old skier survived a night in the Montana backcountry using only basic survival skills and minimal equipment. His experience dramatically illustrates why proper preparation matters when stepping out your front door—especially as global supply chains weaken and store shelves show initial gaps.

From tiny keychain lights to comprehensive bug-out strategies, we explore the spectrum of personal preparedness tools that can save lives when unexpected emergencies strike. The humble flashlight serves as our starting point—whether it's an $11 micro light that lasts a decade or a powerful rechargeable behemoth capable of charging phones during power outages. We examine fire starters, whistles, compasses, and other compact tools that easily fit in your pocket, console, or everyday carry.

Beyond gear, we delve into the critical nature of family emergency planning. With parents typically working in separate locations while children attend school or daycare, coordinating meeting points and establishing communication protocols becomes essential. The episode emphasizes teaching children safety measures like verification code words and making everyone feel invested in the family's emergency preparations.

The preparedness window is closing faster than many realize. Now is the time to assemble supplies, develop skills, and create thoughtful plans—whether for bugging out or hunkering down. Emergency preparation isn't about fear; it's about responsibility. As we navigate increasingly uncertain times, becoming your own first responder until professional help arrives isn't optional—it's necessary. Browse our newly launched bug-out bag classes and learn to protect what matters most.

First Aid: Beyond the Basic Supplies23 Oct 202300:20:33

Send us a text

This week I'm looking at the more advanced aspects of prepping in the medical area. Because it is a serious area of study, the standard disclaimer applies: I'm not a healthcare professional and this is not medical advice. Speak to your healthcare practitioner before making any changes as they can have very serious implications.

I'll be sharing some resources for emergency medications,  techniques for emergency treatments, and how to create survival caches. This is intended to be a basic introduction to the topic and will require additional research and effort to use properly on your part to be useful.

I'll also have information on classes, and Gift Certificates for the upcoming holiday season.

A new listener from Southeastern Ohio reached out and had some good suggestions to share. His name is Todd and he reminded me that building a plan is the key part of the Bug Out Bag and it can be pretty overwhelming at the start. He had some good ideas to share.  Let's take a look at some of those ideas, and I'll share some tips on how to build your plan.

I'm pleased to report that we have good news on the new class, Non-Ballistic Self Defense, we are setting up. It is live on the website. We of course still have our Concealed Carry class happening on October 14th and again on November 11th.  I recommend you register early, while there is still space. With the holidays coming up, you may want to book the Concealed Carry Mastery at the same time.

Back up Power Planning24 Sep 202300:27:46

Send us a text

It seems we are seeing more and more reports of emergencies lately. When we do, one of the common issues is the loss of power to the home. There are an increasing number of choices when it comes to choosing a source of backup power. It is a deep subject and the key to success is research and planning.
It can be confusing and it doesn't matter if you go Gasoline Generator, Solar backup, or some of the new alternate systems. Your first task is to decide what you are going to keep running. Let's go over the basics.

I'll also talk about two really good things that happened this week to brighten my attitude and perhaps can help you with that as well. All that plus new classes are coming together nicely.

Break's Over. Back to work01 Sep 202300:18:36

Send us a text

September is National Preparedness Month, and it couldn't have come at a better time. August has been a veritable &^%$ Storm of disasters.
The tragedy in Lahina, blistering heat and drought, and fires up and down the West Coast have stressed everyone to the limit.
There are some common themes too.  A  report by our local County officials points out that "Milling" is an issue. People are told to leave and when officers check 30 minutes later they find folks haven’t moved. Why? They believe that it won't happen here.  Or even worse…won't happen again.
There is a reoccurring theme of missed/incomplete…even non-existent communication of danger, and blame back and forth. One side says," Impossible to warn everyone" countered by charges of "no warnings being given". Add to that water shortages and the issues with powerlines.

Family, we need to slow down, get focused, and begin to take control of our own lives. Work to get decisions made. Do not wait to be led.  Make sure you can be self-sufficient and stand on your own for 30 days. The Bug Out bag is the first step in that process.

Are you curious about what it truly takes to be prepared for unexpected disasters? Join me, Bill Bateman, as we unravel the essentials of survival beyond the typical bugout bag. You'll gain insights into why prepping has become a crucial aspect of modern life, especially with natural disasters occurring more frequently in places like Los Angeles and Maui. We’ll discuss how being self-sustainable for at least 30 days, stocked with necessities like water, food, and medicine, can transform your approach to emergencies. I draw from my experiences in Oregon, where seniors are setting impressive examples in preparedness. Plus, you’ll get a taste of our hands-on classes that feature gear, designed to equip you for any situation.

This episode also tackles the importance of communication during emergencies when technology might fail you. Imagine relying on basic walkie-talkies and other simple solutions when the usual networks go down. Our instructional sessions are crafted to provide you with practical guidance tailored to diverse audiences, from seniors to young adventurers, without any product pitches. Emphasizing self-reliance in a world of rising prices and scarce supplies, I encourage immediate action and proactive learning. With opportunities to engage further through our website and classes, the path to effective emergency preparedness is laid out. So stay informed, stay prepared, and let’s navigate these uncertain times together.

Just how ready are you? The series of local thunderstorms and related lightning strikes in the area got me thinking about the status of my own Bug Out Bag and my preparation level. I'm giving myself a good talking-to.  Time to repack the bag.

That also got me to rethink some of the newer first-aid ideas that I will be exploring in the weeks to come, All of this while I'm getting ready for the Speakers Bureau event in Ashland on June 28th.  Class information? Of course.

Please follow, share, and download.

Memorial Day and its Roots30 May 202300:18:12

Send us a text

Sometimes you head off in one direction on a project and something catches your attention and you are "down the rabbit hole", moving in a new direction. I was planning on talking about being able to help first responders if you are unable to speak. I was looking at the medical dog tags I wear and the connection to Memorial Day was too strong. The irony of speaking for those who can no longer speak for themselves was a bit too strong, as well as the connection to the aftermath of the Civil War.

The History teacher in me took over. I still included the basic information for you, but I also have some background on Decoration Day,  the event we now call Memorial Day. There will be a Quiz next week.

While fire starters and the latest solar toys are nice, a key part of Prepping includes planning your finances too. This week's latest round of bank failures and job losses brought that home to me. I want to share some suggestions and links with you too.

Let's look at "needs"  compared to "wants", the importance of paying yourselves first, and just what high credit card interest rates do to your wallet, and self-esteem. It's a long road but a trip worth taking.

When you're hot, you're hot!26 Apr 202300:21:12

We have gone from frost and cold weather to temps already in the 80s since the last program. I've broken out my summer straw hat and sunscreen. That can be good news for the garden, but not so much for what emergency supplies you may need to have available in the car. A reminder of the danger of high car temps in the summer and options for storing water and first aid supplies correctly.

Nice seeing you at the MRPC Gun Show last weekend. I'll be answering a few questions that caught my ear.  I've even found a product for a listener. The new Speakers Bureau is active on our website, so check that out too.

And some good news! It looks like Medford has a local paper again. The Rogue Valley Times is a twice-weekly paper in electronic and print format. Il let you know all about that.

Classes are open: Concealed Carry on May 13th. Basic Pistol and Concealed Carry Mastery are now by appointment.

Be sure to share this with at least two friends and when you write regarding the  Salem insanity, be the adult in the room for the conversation. Make us all proud

Life Happens Too03 Apr 202300:16:50

Send us a text

This week I explained the "why" of my long absence. That also leads us to how "Real Life" gives us a lot of opportunities to use our prepping skills. Sometimes it is not always a national disaster that kicks things into motion. It can be a personal one as well. It is even more important to be prepared in those cases too. This was a classic example of the positive value of not only planning but using and working that plan, to be ready for the curve balls that life throws.

I had someone ask if we teach other than CHL classes. (!) Yes, we have a full roster of classes. Please click the link at the bottom to get to the webpage for a full list.

Finally, the rabid ghost of Prop 114 still haunts the halls of Salem and efforts are still underway to make the Oregon Constitution read "Void where prohibited".  Your positive ongoing action is needed.

(One final note: I discuss being sick with COVID during our move. I want to repeat that we did notify everyone involved in  advance and took extra precautions to avoid making others sick, No negative after-effects were reported.)

Disaster, eggs, Prop 114 and a LOT of classes.14 Feb 202300:22:39

First of all, a Happy Valentines Day to  each member of our Family of Preppers.

This week I'll follow up on the question of egg prices and gouging.  Why carrying some cash is a good idea again. Some lessons we can all take away from the disaster in Turkey,
I also  I  built the Website it reminded me of just how many different classes we offer. All that and links to the lastest on Prop 114 .
Follow this link for the full report:  https://www.oregonfirearms.org/114-lawsuit-update

Next year I'll try to get some candy. Be safe and stay well.

Kicking the can down the road.25 Jan 202300:25:17

(Hi. I am already beginning  production on Season 7  in 2024 of this series. My goal is to bring you accurate information as  products and plans change.  I'm going through  all of the early episodes during  the Holiday season to  check content and make notes to  insure accuracy. I  have added my  updated email address.)

This time I will be following up on the “Great Coffee Can” Question from last week regarding our emergency car heater project. With that under control, I have some great news as far as our listeners. The numbers are up! That has led to new directions for the podcast which I'll share at the end of this program.

But first, Let's check on the status of 114. Connected to that stupidity, l want to look at how three major businesses shutting down locations are a microcosm of our overall society.Mcdonald's, Chase Bank, and  Starbucks have made the decision to shutter some stores and reduce hours.  This is due to increases in crime and disruption due to drugs, mental illness, and even in some cases killings. Employee Safety concerns top the list.

I’ll talk about how my long-term planning for an upcoming trip brought some prep-related issues into focus.

I'll put on my tinfoil hat and meet with my secret source for a look at the latest conspiracy theory: The rising prices at the grocery store. It is making it very expensive to be caught with egg on your face these days.

All that plus Class Updates and a Special Surprise announcement for 2023!

Think Small: Steps to Crisis Readiness 22 Jan 202500:18:40

Send us a text

Ever been caught off guard by a small detail in an emergency? Picture this: a New Year's Eve interrupted by a burst pressure release valve on the water heater, leading to chaos and a frantic scramble to shut off water and power. Through this personal tale of unexpected disaster, we explore how tiny preparations, like clearly labeled breaker boxes and having emergency contacts ready, can make a world of difference. We also shine a light on the surprising utility of military can openers, the P-38 and P-51, proving that even the smallest items can hold immense value in crisis moments.

But being ready isn't just about having the right tools; it's about maintaining them too. We dive into the critical importance of choosing reliable knives and firearms, and the need for their regular upkeep. From avoiding those flimsy "gas station" folders to ensuring your ammunition is safely stored with silica gel packets, we cover it all. Plus, we sprinkle in tips for effective emergency heating solutions and planning your range visits with flexibility. Tune in for an episode packed with insights on preparedness, whether it's for a day at the range or an unexpected emergency.

Prop 114 is causing, as expected, a lot of misinformation and upset, as well as a spike in gun sales to beat the arbitrary Dec. 8th deadline.  Today we look at some of the negative impacts, the lawsuits moving forward as well as, an unexpected side effect.

A part of that has caused some misinformation concerning our Sheriff's Department and getting your CHL.  We want to correct that. We  stand behind Sherriff Sickler and his team and appreciate his long-term positive support. Time to  step that back.
