Creating a tapestry of anti-violence advocacy and exploring (abolitionist) futures of the movement15 Aug 202600:50:34

Inspired by Dr. Melinda Chen’s new book, Killing Radicalism: Anti-Rape Advocacy Reimagined, this episodes explores how the myriad “threads” of anti-rape activism over the centuries create a “tapestry” of anti-violence advocacy—and what they mean for the futures of the movement. Rather than replicate periodical histories, i.e., going by century or by decade, each “thread” involves distinct social identity-based organizing collectives, such as queer and trans* liberation, racial equity, decolonization and sovereignty, and immigrant justice, and how each grouping approached issues of sexual violence. This approach ensures that listeners see intersectionality inherent to anti-rape advocacy and queer what must be done to continue supporting survivors of all backgrounds. Support for survivors of violence, including queer and trans survivors, must enjoin hands with intersecting movements to be truly effective.

Censorship: What's happening, why, and how to fightback with Cat Hadley31 Jul 202600:42:09

The accelerating censorship of queer spaces — online and in person — is not accidental. From social media platforms demonetizing and removing queer content, to physical spaces being shut down or legislated out of existence, this episode will explore how censorship operates, who it targets, and what communities are doing to fight back. Key takeaways include understanding the mechanisms platforms use to suppress queer content, the real-world impact on community building and visibility, and what meaningful resistance looks like. Target audience: queer communities, digital rights advocates, organizers, and anyone paying attention to the current political moment. Join Dr. Shanna Katz Kattari (they/them) of the SRG Collective and Cat Hadley (she/they) for great time!

Cat Hadley is a co-founder of RE/STRICT, a Detroit-based multimedia platform celebrating kink and queerness as political resistance. Through film festivals, magazines, and community events, RE/STRICT platforms work that has been censored or suppressed. In a moment when pleasure is criminalized and queer and trans bodies are under attack, RE/STRICT insists on the radical right to desire, autonomy, and existence on your own terms. Cat is a campaign strategist, Truman Scholar, New Leaders Council Fellow, and elected Ann Arbor District Library Board Trustee.
