Surprise Chef is Superb!25 Nov 202500:44:16

In this episode Adrian and Leon dive deep into the lush, groove-driven world of Melbourne’s very own Surprise Chef, celebrating their brilliant new album 'Superb''.

This record marks a turning point for the band — trading their usual meticulous production for something looser, more spontaneous, and full of unbridled joy.

Across the conversation, we explore how tracks like “Bully Ball,” “Body Slam,” and the dreamy “Websites” blend jazz-funk, cinematic soul, and experimental textures, revealing a band confidently pushing their sound into energised, playful territory.

As part of our Australian music spotlight series, we unpack why Surprise Chef’s 'Superb' feels like both a creative leap and a deeply soulful statement — and why it might just make them one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary instrumental acts.

Tropical F*#k Storm - Fairy Land Codex06 Oct 202500:47:49

A word of warning, there is no escaping using expletives in this episode: it's right there in the band name. In this episode, we discuss the Melbourne art rockers, Tropical F*ck Storm and their 2025 album, Fairyland Codex.

This band is a massive favourite of Leon's - he would almost characterise himself as a super fan. This episode is a deep dive into the poetry, noise, chaos and beauty of these avant garde animals.

Grab your pepper spray from Kmart and join us for a record where the apocalypse comes with a wink and some howling feedback . It's like Sesame Street hallucinations - guitars that sound like broken transmissions, and lyrics that make you laugh just before they pull the floor out from under you. Tropical F*ck Storm have always thrived by carefully guiding chaos that beautiful, buzzing tension between creation and collapse and re-creation.

Confession Booth: Aretha Franklin and Fleetwood Mac02 Jul 202400:52:12

In your lifetime, there are some albums that you simply must listen to.

We had heard the music of the following two artists, but we had never before listened to these albums in full:

Young Gifted and Black by Aretha Franklin

and

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

Sometimes this kind of musical experience will simply be an education in music history, at other times it will be like discovering a parcel of pure joy. Sometimes it is a bit in between.

Which of these did we experience when listening to Franklin and Fleetwood?

Forgotify 10 Jun 202400:54:11

It is staggering how many songs on streaming services do not have even one listen.

Yep. No one has ever listened to them, even the person uploading them apparently!

Ade and Leon visit Forgotify.com, a site that serves up tracks on Spotify that have never been listened to.

The challenge was to listen to the first ten songs that were presented and report back.

What do you imagine the tracks were like?

Basement singer songwriters?

Bedroom EDM?

Bizarre metal?

The truth will surprise you.

Enjoy fascinating chat on the state of streaming services, technology and the music industry in general.

Gig Report: Wilco and TFS06 May 202400:56:40

There is nothing quite like seeing live music. Right around the same time Leon and Adrian saw two shows in different Australian cities that may have been almost the polar opposite.

One was in the Sydney Opera House, the other was in a Brisbane pub venue. One was a stand alone band, the other was 4 bands touring under the name, "Cellophane Honeymoon". One experience was of a tightly controlled musical curation, the other was a menagerie of noisy guitar.

*please note that due to the name of a band discussed, there are several expletive words used

The Greatest Bands That Never Existed22 Apr 202400:53:27

Some of the greatest bands never actually existed.

Sometimes bands exist to service something fictional, be it in a film, book or tv show.

This episode features what we think are the greatest fictitious bands to ever exist. Four from Adrian, four from Leon with a special bonus....

... As a special treat, the final two bands come from the following challenge:

**Invent a fictitious band each and present them for your listening pleasure**

Can you think of any bands we missed that should have been on the list? Crucial Taunt or The Jolly Green Giants? Maybe the Be Sharps?

Albums of Agony and Adulation08 Apr 202400:56:06

Adrian and Leon share an album with each other. Adrian loves the album he shared with Leon and the same goes for the album Leon shared with Adrian.

However, the person sharing the album has carefully chosen an album that the other will hate. The exercise is to choose an album that will cause extreme irritation and displeasure by listening to it.

The joy of this chat is hearing the different ways that each person hears the same album.

Adrian has recommended Aja by Steely Dan and Leon recommended Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella by Nurse with Wound.

NASA's Golden Record and Rock Music for Aliens25 Mar 202400:54:54

In 1977 NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft.

Each craft contained a special Golden Record.

Each record was a time capsule, containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and were intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them.

They also include 90 minutes of music.

Our challenge in this episode?

Imagine being tasked with selecting 10 tracks to include on the next NASA space probe. Specifically, rock music. What tracks would you choose?

Sweet Chat: Sweet Talk01 Sep 202500:52:09

On this episode, Leon and Adrian lock horns over one of the most intriguing new Australian acts, Sweet Talk. This season, the boys are on a mission to shine a spotlight on brilliant Australian music that deserves more ears – and Sweet Talk’s rootsy, Americana-infused album has certainly caught Adrian’s.

But here’s the rub: Leon can’t stand country or Americana. At least… not usually. After firing off a quick takedown of all things cowboy hats and Dodge Trucks Leon gamely embraces the challenge, turning the conversation toward why Adrian is so taken with this band. The result is a thoughtful and surprisingly entertaining exchange where genre bias meets genuine appreciation.

It’s a chat full of wit, passion, and sharp music insight – proof that even when one of them is squirming in his seat, Leon and Adrian are at their best when they’re pulling apart what makes a record tick.

Tune in for a Super Sonic Chat where Sweet Talk sparks some very sweet talk indeed.

The Weight of Expectation: The National & Yeah Yeah Yeahs31 Jul 202301:05:39

Do you ever look at someone and just know they are a fan of a certain band?

Have you ever met someone and just know they'd be into a certain artist?

This chat is about the weight of expectation.

Adrian kept having a certain band recommended to him by many people, including Leon.

'Oh you'd love them!' many people would say. 'I can't believe you've never listened to them before!'

Is Adrian the kind of person that looks like he'd love The National?

Is Leon the kind of person that looks like he'd love Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

The weight of expectation can change the way we experience music and this episode is a perfect example.

Language warning: Lyrics of rage often contain expletives of a very colourful nature.

Songs of Few Words08 May 202301:01:37

There’s a story about Ernsest Hemmingway, famous author, taking a bet that he couldnt write a story in 6 words.

Needless to say, when he read out six simple words, everyone paid up.

It got us thinking about the simple songs.

Not the songs loaded with lyrics.

Not those dense and lengthy songs.

But those songs that manage to say so much with so little.

If you will, what are some great ‘6 word’ type songs?

This is a simultaneous event, but which is separated by 900 kilometres. The bands are different, but within a congruous genre. This is the concert experience of Leon watching Black Midi in Brisbane while at the same time, Adrian watches King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in Sydney.

Approaching the Unknowable: The Transcendent Role of Music and Art10 Apr 202300:49:11

Sometimes you need to talk about the things you can't see or touch.

For millenia the role of the artist has been, in part, to touch the sublime, to transcend the every day, to access something bigger than themselves and invite us to be a part of that.

In this chat we tackle this uplifting role that music plays in our lives whilst visiting the cathedrals of the everyman: the pub and the sporting arena.

We hear about the Romanticists and sci-fi author and philosopher Aldous Huxley.

We chat about Pub Choir, singing when your team is winning, the magic of anthemic choruses as well as music for psychedelic therapy and much more.

Feel it in Five - Bahamas and Beirut27 Mar 202301:03:12

Here's the challenge:  how do you distill an artist down to 5 songs for a first time listener?

When introducing someone to an artist or band they've never heard, it can be tricky to pick a playlist.

Too many songs can overwhelm the listener - so Adrian and Leon have developed the technique of choosing five for the unfamiliar. Five songs that impart a sense of what the artist is about. Not your five favourite songs. Not the five best songs. Five songs that hint at the flavour of the artist without delivering the full course. If done correctly it should be enough to leave them wanting more if they like what they're presented with.

This is the experiment: to pick only five songs of an artist you love that are tailored to hook the uninitiated.

In this episode, your hosts put this into practice for each other.

Adrian recommends the cool, catchy compositions of Bahamas.

Leon recommends the esoteric, sonorous sounds of Beirut.

Both artists filed under the letter 'B'.

Both artists with monikers you'll find on the world map.

Featured Songs:

Bahamas

No Expectations from Earthtones, 2018

Caught Me Thinking from Barchords, 2012

Lost in the Light from Barchords, 2012

Never Again from Barchords, 2012

All the Time from Bahamas is Afie, 2014

Beirut

Nantes from The Flying Club Cup, 2007

Postcards From Italy from Gulag Orkestar, 2006

Tracy Chapman 'Tracy Chapman' (1988)

Spoiler alert:  we clash wildly on our opinions of one of these albums!

We also incidentally mention some artists along the way such as:

Songs of Love27 Feb 202301:09:41

What makes a great love song?

By chatting about our favourites maybe we can find the common elements.

We were inspired by recording our 69th episode in the middle of February which felt like the right convergence of events to talk about songs that express a sentiment of love.

Not lust. Not fleeting moments of teenage attraction. Not a rendezvous at the local discotheque.  Long lasting, true, heartfelt, dedicated love. But also the pang of love lost - or true love yet to come to fruition.

Featured songs:

Pagan Poetry by Bjork, from Vespertine, 2001
To Make You Feel My Love by Adele, from 19, 2008
To Make You Feel My Love Trisha Yearwood, from Hope Floats soundtrack, 1998
A Chicken with its Head Cut Off and I Don't Want to get Over You by The Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs, 1999
Everlong by Foo Fighters, from The Colour and the Shape, 1997
Ore D'Amore by Mike Patton, from Mondo Cane, 2010

Struggle & Swagger: Genesis Owusu02 Jun 202500:50:06

Our 2025 mission remains: to shine a spotlight on great Australian music.

Here we dive deep into Struggler, the critically acclaimed second album by Genesis Owusu. With its genre-bending soundscape, existential themes, and unrelenting energy, Struggler cements Genesis as one of the most inventive and fearless artists in the Australian music scene—and beyond.

We peel back the layers of sonic experimentation, poetic lyricism, and Owusu’s shape-shifting persona. From the post-punk propulsion of “Leaving the Light” to the dystopian funk of “Tied Up!”, we unpack how Struggler wrestles with chaos, identity, and perseverance—anchored by Genesis’s unmistakable voice and bold creative vision.

Along the way, we connect the album’s themes to the broader challenge of carving out space for Australian artists in a global market dominated by US and UK acts.

Why is Struggler so vital in this cultural moment?

What does its international success say about the evolving landscape of Australian music?

And how does Genesis Owusu embody the future we hope to see for homegrown artistry?

Tune in as we celebrate Struggler — a record that refuses to play by the rules, and a reminder of why Australian music matters on the world stage.

The Terrifying Abundance 28 Nov 202200:46:16

Have you noticed there's a terrifying abundance of music out there?

A. Terrifying. Abundance.

How do you find new music?

How does new music find you?

The choice can be both overwhelming and paralysing.

Join in on this week's challenge.  It's a simple one: go out and find new music that you love.

We gave ourselves a week to do this.  The only rule was we could not ask each other!  We dived in and fully experienced the process of searching for something new and interesting to listen to.

Our chat revolves around the obstacles and observations involved in navigating this challenge.

We definitely discuss curation in both art and music and how critical curation is now more than ever.

Where do you find new music?  Who or what are the trusted sources?  Can Artificial Intelligence play a role? Is the algorithm a trusted source?

Confession Booth: Kate Bush and Miles Davis14 Nov 202200:56:53

In the life of a music obsessive there are unwritten responsibilities.

There are albums that at some point in your life you must listen to.

In particular, when you are faced with a wrong, you must take all necessary steps to right it.

In this semi-regular series we call Confession Booth, we publicly confess our wrongs and take corrective action.  We present this subsequent recorded chat as our penance.

Let it be known that Adrian, and his comrade Leon, had previously never listened to either:

the 1985 album by Kate Bush called ‘Hounds of Love’

OR

the 1960 album by Miles Davis called ‘Sketches of Spain’.

In this chat we record our initial reactions and discuss our thoughts and feelings on these two universally acclaimed albums.

Saxophilia - an interview with Kirk Hamilton (Strong Songs podcast creator)31 Oct 202201:08:02

This is part two of Adrian's therapy program where we go from saxophone aversion to saxophone acceptance to possibly saxophone love.

We've called in a bona fide sax expert Kirk Hamilton for a second opinion.  Kirk is an expert on not only the sax but contemporary music as a whole, and is the host of the great music podcast Strong Songs.

We were extremely excited to be chatting with the host of Strong Songs, a podcast that is not only incredibly and impeccably made, but also has the capacity to not only introduce the listener to previously overlooked music, but also to open up facets of music that you have listened to for an incredibly long time.

Dive deep into the wonderful world of the saxophone as Kirk breaks it wide open for us, playing live examples of incredible sax as well as beautiful, wonderful tangents that will hold you captivated.

Gizz in 5 Songs: an intro to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard17 Oct 202200:58:59
In this episode we present to you our chef's selection, our 'amuse-bouche', our tasting plate for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Here's the challenge:  how do you distill a band down to 5 songs for a first time listener? Imagine you're chatting with someone and it becomes apparent they have no idea about a band you've loved for a long time. You have a choice to make: Do you hit them with the full mysteries of the Gizzverse?  A deep dive into the members, the albums, the tours, the songs, the side projects, the role they played in music history and the depth of love you feel for them? OR Do you pique their interest with a few choice selections and give them five key songs that deliver a good insight into the band? We choose the second path. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, or King Gizz or just Gizz, is a band we both have loved for a long time.  They're a totally unique and cult level band that are consistently prolific and endlessly interesting . Without wanting to overwhelm you, we simply present to you Gizz in five songs. If you're a Gizz fan, let us know if we get it right. If you do not know who King Gizz are, enjoy the journey and let us know your impression. Either way, just beware being pulled into the Gizzverse!
