MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM is a 2022 doc based on the book of the same name by Lizzy Goodman. Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, this look at '00s nostalgia focuses on a cluster of rock bands coming out of New York and Brooklyn at the beginning of the George W. Bush era. These bands that went on to define this scene were The Moldy Peaches, The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, and TV On the Radio - or so this film would have us believe.

It's inarguable that this cluster of musicians made a lasting impact on music culture and are among the most successful acts still touring. The doc digs in, but is there much dirt to unveil?

The only film credited to Banksy, Exit Through The Gift Shop tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a self-taught street artist/documentarian who ends up becoming the subject of the film. It has to be seen to be believed, and even then there’s a lot that is unbelievable, as befits a prankster like Banksy. Is Thierry aka Mr. Brainwash real or a long con? We get into the theories and the comedy of the art world.

Eric Steuer works with artists, media companies, technology developers, and cultural institutions on the use of Creative Commons licenses and CC-licensed content. Before joining CC, Eric was an editor for Wired magazine, where he is currently a correspondent, covering the intersection of technology and popular culture. We discuss Michael Moore’s latest documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 with journalist, activist, and comedian Francesca Fiorentini. Francesca has been at SF Sketchfest and the Comedy Comedy Festival, and appears at clubs throughout California. She was the host and producer of Newsbroke, the political comedy web series for AJ+, so we’re stoked to talk about the looming influence of Michael Moore and the intersection of comedy and reporting.

While the trailer for Fahrenheit 11/9 looks like an epic Donald Trump takedown, he's really only in it about a quarter of the film. Moore also takes on the media, the Electoral College, and the ongoing water crisis in his hometown of Flint, Mich. There are bright spots along the way like interviews with upcoming candidates in the midterms like Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, and a generational shift in the Parkland activists. It's in theaters now.

This was a crazy night in the mission because we recorded immediately after the Warriors won!

We review the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 which you can catch on Vice TV on Sept. 8th, just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

The documentary features interviews with comedians including David Cross, Gilbert Godfried, Janeane Garofolo, and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor’s place in the aftermath of the attacks that day. The film explores how stand-up comedians, Broadway performers, late-night hosts, and Saturday Night Live helped audiences laugh even in the darkest of days. Our guest is Julie Seabaugh the director, executive producer, and story editor of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.

Too Soon premieres on VICE TV September 8 at 9 p.m. and will be repeating numerous times thereafter. (VICE TV is available via all major satellite and cable providers and the VICE TV app via iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.)

Julie Seabaugh grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and discovered stand-up when Dave Attell performed during her senior year of college. Way back in 2003, she founded and edited the criminally ahead of its time print and online comedy magazine Two Drink Minimum. Now the only full-time freelance comedy journalist in the United States, she’s contributed to The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, GQ, Variety, The A.V. Club, The Village Voice, The Huffington Post, Spin, Playboy, Vulture, Paste, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, and numerous other alt-weeklies. 

Seabaugh’s coverage of modern roasting culminated in the 2018 book Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.'s Fight Club for Comedians, and her love of Mitch Hedberg led to producing/hosting 2020’s Hope on Top: A Mitch Hedberg Oral History for SiriusXM’s Comedy Central Channel (available to stream via the SiriusXM app). With Emmy-nominated director and editor Nick Scown, she is currently producing the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. Participants include David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Gilbert Gottfried, Lewis Black, Darrell Hammond, Doug Stanhope, and Marc Maron; the film’s 2021 release will mark the twentieth anniversary of the attacks. 

Among her career highlights, simultaneous Bridget Everett Village Voice and Roast Battle L.A. Weekly cover stories ran on both sides of the country the week of September 8, 2014. Interviewees over the years include Carl Reiner, Christopher Guest, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, Don Rickles, Eddie Izzard, Drew Carey, Howie Mandel, Jimmy Kimmel, Key & Peele, Judd Apatow, Lily Tomlin, Mitch Hedberg, Seth Meyers, Wanda Sykes, and Zach Galifianakis.  

Having previously served as A&E staff writer at Las Vegas Weekly, Seabaugh won a 2015 Nevada Press Association Award for a cover profile tracing the downward health spiral of The Amazing Johnathan. “It’s obvious the author is a wordsmith,” judges wrote. “Every sentence is well thought out. It’s full of lively adjectives and truly paints a picture of what the Amazing Johnathan looks like, what he’s experiencing and how he got to his current state. I felt like he was sitting next to me, boisterously telling his story.”

Our True Crime month of Mayhem rolls on.

Today it's the 2009 film Cropsey by Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio and our guest is Andy Sell.

Staten Island’s tight knit community was the site of a series of child disappearances throughout the 70s and 80s. The police found one suspect, but could this one man account for the bogeyman legend of Cropsey? Was he working alone, or was he the wrong man altogether? Cropsey is like a horror movie come to terrifying life.

Andy Sell is a comedian, actor, and writer who has been obsessed with horror movies since he started watching them at an arguably inappropriate age. Born in Iowa, Andy graduated film school from a college in New Mexico that no longer exists and currently resides in the Los Angeles area where he co-produces the monthly storytelling show, We Still Like You. Andy has performed at comedy shows and festivals across the country. He has no representation but still managed to co-write and co-star in a Comedy Central snapchat series called Nostalgia-rama in 2016, and act in a principle role in the neo-noir feature film, Los Angeles Overnight (now available on Amazon). Andy worked for Ray Bradbury's Pandemonium Theatre Company, has officiated four weddings, mains Junkrat on Overwatch (but will fill as healer), loves cats, and is candid about mental health onstage. He is followed on Twitter by some pretty cool well-known people despite not being verified, but doesn't want to drop names (but like, you would totally be jealous). It's MAYHEM again, our month-long coverage of True Crime documentaries.

Part 1 of our True Crime series starts off with West of Memphis (2012 Amy Berg). We recap this follow-up to the Paradise Lost series with horror filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth. Gavin is shooting a new feature film "Last Call" this summer, and make sure to check out his newly released music videos for artist SYML titled "Body" and "The War"!

Canadian born director Gavin Michael Booth’s film, music video and commercial work has been featured around the globe in theatres, on television and online. His work includes collaborations with Third Eye Blind, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Blumhouse, Royal Bank of Canada and more. Currently LA-based, Gavin is available for projects in the U.S. & Canada.

As with the Paradise Lost film and its two sequels, West of Memphis follows the events of the West Memphis Three, a case in which three teenagers (Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin) were arrested for the murders of three 8-year old children.

The West Memphis Three were subsequently convicted of murder and remained in prison for more than 18 years. West of Memphis focuses on Terry Hobbs, stepfather of Stevie Branch, one of the victims of the 1993 crime, as a potential suspect due to physical evidence linking him to the crime, a history of violent behavior and his lack of an alibi for the time the murders were committed, as well as damaging statements made by his ex-wife, former neighbors, and most recently his own nephew, who claims Hobbs confessed to him. The film reveals that inexplicably Terry Hobbs was not interviewed by police at the time of the murders.

It’s the return of legendary comedian Wayne Federman! Not only is Wayne a comedian but also a co-producer on The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling the two-part biography directed by Judd Apatow and recently released by HBO.

A long time friend of Shandling’s, Wayne played Larry’s brother Stan on the ground-breaking series The Larry Sanders Show. We also find out he was a part of the storied Sunday Basketball game that Shandling hosted at his home.

Wayne's credits include Transparent, Seinfeld, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Funny People, head monologue writer for Fallon, and much much more. He teaches comedy history at USC and wrote a book about Pistol Pete Maravich.

When the Rajneesh movement and their leader the Bhagwan came to rural Oregon in the 1980s was it just a clash of cultures (worldly orange-clad hippies vs. conservative townspeople) or a mafia-style hostile takeover? The directors Maclain and Chapman Way have crafted a twisting drama with unearthed videotape of the Rajneeshpuram saga, plus new interviews with many key players. While most of you reading this may not know the name Bhagwan Rajneesh, those who were around to watch the news in the early 1980s can tell you that he was a massive story around the country. That’s because Rajneesh and his followers spent $125 million back in 1981 to build Rajneeshpuram in in the Oregon desert, a 64,000-acre “utopia,” complete with a hospital, schools, restaurants, a shopping mall, and their own airport. What happened there and in the surrounding area is so far-fetched that you won’t believe it’s all true.

One of the great things about the doc is the way the filmmakers weave footage from the actual events in alongside new interviews with the people involved.

Our guest is journalist-podcaster/multi-hyphenate Los Angeles native, Richard Parks III. Richard has written for Lucky Peach, the New York Times, and McSweeney's. He's behind on his child support payments, he drinks too much, he can't even convince his ancient Uncle Bill that he has a future as a moviemaker. He plunders the bank account of his Uncle Bill for funds to continue, he uses his friends and hapless local amateur actors as his cast, he enlists his mother as his cinematographer, and his composer and best friend is a guy named Mike Schank who, after one drug trip too many, seems like the twin of Kevin Smith's Silent Bob. American Movie is a classic documentary!

Our guest is comedian Alex Hooper here to talk about the Academy Award winning documentary Man On Wire.

Man On Wire is a 2008 documentary directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit‘s 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations and still photographs of the walk, alongside re-enactments and present-day interviews with the participants.

Alex has a strong connection to this doc: he recently started slack-lining and we uncover the connection between performing comedy and walking on a wire without a net!

Boomer nostalgia meets nu metal in a fight where no one wins. The ceremonies took place in Rome, New York in 1999, three decades after the initial Woodstock festival. Seemingly small logistics issues roll into a massive (and literal) shitshow, sprinkled with arson, sexual assaults, and at least one fatality.

Do Bill Simmons’ and HBO lay the blame where it belongs, or are they re-exploiting these events for a quick payday two decades later?

Today we sat down with writer Tony DuShane. Tony is the author of Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk, published by Soft Skull Press and now a feature film directed by Eric Stoltz.

His writing has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, The Rumpus, and The Believer. He was a music columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle and wrote hundreds of articles covering books, film, and music. He also teaches novel writing at UCLA Extension.

Tony wanted to discuss the 2014 experimental music documentary 20,000 Days On Earth (directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard) which depicts a 24-hour period in the life of musician, author, composer and actor Nick Cave. It won for Documentary directing and editing at Sundance and was nominated for a Best Documentary BAFTA.

Kinison was raised to become an evangelical preacher, wasn’t any good at it, and turned to comedy to find his voice. George talked to Tyler Hubby about the work he did with Jeff Feuerzeig on The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which coincides with our Episode 69 with Kip Uhlhorn and Daniel's current tour (where his backing band changes from city to city and includes Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Doug Martsch of Built To Spill). Sup Doc kicks off the jams w ROCKTOBER a month long line-up of music docs and great guests. We hit the stage with The Devil and Daniel Johnston with our guest, musician Kip Uhlhorn!

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2005 documentary film about the noted American musician Daniel Johnston. It chronicles Johnston's life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, edited by Tyler Hubby, and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal.

Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002. The first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain.

In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.

Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Cloudland Canyon’s ranks have included close friend Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Turing Machine, Moby) who died in 2009. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton) has joined the band.

In celebration of Werner Herzog's 75th birthday Paco and George welcome (long time friend) the very talented writer/comedian Bucky Sinister to Sup Doc. Bucky was very excited to talk about one of his favorite docs My Best Fiend. My Best Fiend (German: Mein liebster Feind - Klaus Kinski, literally My Dearest Foe - Klaus Kinski) is a 1999 German documentary film written and directed by Werner Herzog, about his tumultuous yet productive relationship with German actor Klaus Kinski. It was released on DVD in 2000 by Anchor Bay and reissued on Blu-ray by Shout Factory in 2014 as part of Herzog: The Collection.

We also talk to Bucky about his start in poetry, growing up in a cult, sobriety, and much more as it relates to Herzog.
