SMAC325 Introduction To Non-Towered Airport Operations01 Sep 202400:54:10

It was after midnight and the lights of New York City could be seen from miles away as we flew over Republic Field on Long Island New York on our way to White Plains. I could make out the airport many miles away and the winds were calm. I caught myself saying “What could go wrong on this perfect night”. I wish I didn’t say that.

In the flare to touchdown, I noticed things getting dark out of the corner of my eye. That is when I realized the time set for the lights had finished and I clicked the mic 7 times making the airport “come alive” again.

This made me think about how infrequently many of us fly to non-towered fields and how we should review the procedures to know what to say and how to turn the lights on.

Listener mail:

Listener mail (Russ) – do ICAO equipment codes matter for VFR flight following/radar services?

I’m an active-duty soldier working in Army Aviation and transitioning to civilian life. For as long as I can remember I’ve had a strong interest in flying. I’ve always been drawn to aviation in general. Until recently I had continued to put off my pursuit of aviation for financial reasons or whatever other excuses I had at the time. I enlisted as a rotorcraft mechanic hoping to get at least some form of a fix. It’s been great. I wanted more but still had too many excuses.

I was deployed for a while and didn’t have much to do in my off-time other than listen to podcasts or watch movies. So I thought I’d take a look and find all the aviation-related podcasts and at least learn a few things. Needless to say, in my time there I managed to listen to and catch up on nearly every episode of about 35 podcasts. It’s amazing how quickly you can get through content when you listen at double speed while working 12-hour shifts. I have more notes written in my notebooks than I know what to do with.

When I returned stateside I got my first class medical and enrolled in a flight training program. I’m also beginning my airframe and power-plant certificate next week as part of my exit program from active duty. I couldn’t be happier. 12 years since my first flight and I’m finally pursuing my goals. 29 feels like a late start, but so long as I can fly you’ll never see me without a smile on my face again.

The scholarship guide, the countless episodes of pointers, the stories from other pilots, advice on ways to accomplish flight training, the different ways to build time, recommended products or strategies, and the encouraging words from all the podcasters out there have been an invaluable resource. I’m still not entirely sure which route I want to take with my career. I have made it my goal to get through all my ratings, and give back to the community at the very least. If I can just influence one person the way all of you influenced me; whatever I do in aviation will be worth it.

Thank you all so much for everything you put into the community. You’ve really lit a fire under me. Keep putting out all that amazing content!

SMAC219 Soaring to Glory: A Tuskegee Airman’s Firsthand Account of World War II15 Aug 201901:08:08

Soaring to Glory: A Tuskegee Airman’s Firsthand Account of World War II. Welcome to the podcast about learning to fly, living to fly, and loving to fly. Today I have a special guest Lt. Col. Harry Stewart. A passionate aviator with a unique story to tell. Fortunately Lt. Col. Stewart has launched a new book telling his story. He is one of only a few living WWII Tuskegee pilots and his book, Soaring to Glory: A Tuskegee Airman’s Firsthand Account of World War II, tells the story of how he and his fellow airmen risked their lives to shoot down Nazis all over Europe while fighting racial prejudice both at home and in the air in.

This is the remarkable first-hand account of one of those 14 men, Lt. Colonel Harry T. Stewart, Jr, who flew 43 combat missions in Italy—including one legendary mission in which he shot down three German planes in one day. Stewart and his fellow pilots faced segregation, prejudice, and disrespect—and still, day after day, they took to the skies to battle America’s enemies.

Cruise Flight (Challenges after an accident or incident):

Listener mail:

Hi Carl, I just listened to your show with the aviation attorney, Chris. Does he have a recommendation for the level of AOPA membership for good general legal coverage?

Answer from Christ Pezalla:

AOPA offers two levels of coverage, basic and plus. The plans are the same,
except that the plus level provides more hours of legal help in the event of
an accident or investigation. Both plans offer hotline support and both
plans will cover the majority of legal issues a pilot might encounter.

In addition to being a panel attorney for AOPA, I’m also an AOPA member and
I have the plus-level plan for myself. I went with plus-level because it
offers more hours of legal support and better support with medical issues.

That being said, both plans are excellent.

SMAC214 Do You Need An Aviation Attorney01 Jun 201900:49:48

Do you need an Aviation Attorney? Welcome to a special edition of the Stuck Mic AvCast. Recently we have received feedback from many of our listeners concerning a situation where they have received a letter from the FAA concerning their medical exam. We also have had a few folks who have been concerned about recent accidents, incidents, and violations.

Sometimes a vital point is lost in the excitement and spectacle of the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-in and Expo, and that’s the fact that this entire event is the biggest fundraiser for the most successful aviation education initiative in the nation: the Aerospace Center for Excellence. The money from every exhibitor, from every sponsor, and yes, from every single wristband sold, goes to support this most worthy of charities: the future of aviation in America.

While you’re out wandering around in the heat, admiring (or drooling on) the marvelous aircraft and aviation “stuff” out there at the expo, think about how you can go a little further to support the young men and women at ACE, the Aerospace Center for Excellence, and get something tangible in return. Sun ‘n Fun offers three upgraded amenities to thank our generous donors and supporters.

First, there’s Preferred Airshow Seating, in front of the announcer’s stand. For not many dollars, you can do a lot better than standing in the crowd: Preferred Airshow Seating offers seats with a great view of the action, private restrooms, and ice cold water. Inure at the Preferred Airshow Seating window in front of the announcer’s stand.

Next, for those in a position to support ACE a bit further, there’s the 9/27 Club. Located on the warbird ramp at the flight line, the 9/27 Club offers gourmet chef-prepared breakfast and lunch each day of the Fly-In, with dinner on Wednesday and Saturday. You’ll dine in air-conditioned comfort, with a different menu each day, plenty of soft drinks, as well as beer and wine for those so inclined. Your 9/27 Club pass also includes private VIP parking with continual shuttle service to and from the flight line, private restrooms, and tasty treats between meals. Daily and weekly prices are available on the Sun ‘n Fun web site at flysnf.org.

Finally, Sun ‘n Fun offers its largest individual donors and corporate sponsors the ultimate in luxury at an airshow: The ACE Ambassador Flight Deck. Our Ambassadors enjoy a front row view of the airshow from comfy couches and armchairs in the air-conditioned comfort of a private club, where snacks and beverages are available all day. The Ambassadors can entertain business and personal guests, get private transportation around the grounds, and basically enjoy all the hospitality that Sun ‘n Fun can provide to its most significant supporters: the ACE Ambassadors. To become an ACE Ambassador, or for further information, contact Holly Parrish, Sun ‘n Fun’s Director of Development, through the flysnf.org web site.

You may be thinking “Hey, Carl, isn’t it a bit late to take advantage of these amenities tonight?” Well, it’s never too late to support such a great cause and such a wonderful program. The Sun ‘n Fun website always accepts tax-deductible donations, and when you’re thinking about your trip to Sun ‘n Fun 2020, you might consider whether an upgraded hospitality amenity and a larger role in supporting the Aerospace Center for Excellence will be in your plans for next year.

SMAC202 Spatial Disorientation And Prevention15 Mar 201901:07:37

We are told to trust our instruments but many times our body tells us we are descending and turning when in reality we are flying straight and level. It takes discipline to trust our instruments and also vow to never fly into IFR conditions if we are not instrument current and competent. Today we discuss how to prevent and how to mitigate spatial disorientation.

“The majority of weather accidents were VFR flights into IMC. Additionally, this category had the largest number of fatal accidents and the highest lethality rate.” – Nall Report 2018

https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/pilots/medical/fit-to-fly-pilots

Cruise Flight (Spatial Disorientation):

What Is Spatial Disorientation – Spatial disorientation specifically refers to the lack of orientation with regard to the position, attitude, or movement of the airplane in space.

Systems in our body – Vestibular, Somatosensory , Visual.

Why VMC to IMC is usually fatal:

During flight in visual meteorological conditions (VMC), the eyes are the major orientation source and usually prevail over false sensations from other sensory systems

Experiences with spatial disorientation caused by flying.

When these visual cues are removed, as they are in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), false sensations can cause a pilot to quickly become disoriented.

“Unless a pilot has many hours of training in instrument flight, flight should be avoided in reduced visibility or at night when the horizon is not visible.” – PHAK

“Illusions rank among the most common factors cited as contributing to fatal aviation accidents.” – PHAKT

Systems our body uses to orient our body

  • Vestibular
  • Somatosensory
  • Visual

Types of spatial disorientation.

  • The Leans
  • Coriolis Illusion
  • Graveyard Spiral
  • Somatogravic Illusion

SMAC312 Managing Traffic Stops as a Pilot01 Mar 202400:23:08

As a pilot who loves to fly, we try to protect our hobby through prudent planning, budgeting, and training. I often get asked questions about what to do when pulled over by the police to protect our pilot certificate. Should I take the sobriety test or not?

To help me answer this question is Chris Pezalla from the Law Offices of Robert M. Strumor, LLC. Chris is an airline pilot and aviation attorney who has been a frequent guest on this and our sister podcast Aviation Careers Podcast.

Before we begin a quick reminder that the new 2024 version of the scholarship guide has been published and is available by clicking on the scholarships guide on the right side of the screen at https://stuckmicavcast.com/

Cruise Flight:

If I am pulled over and asked to take a sobriety test, what should I do?

Be professional and truthful. Anything you say can end up in a police report.

Always take the breathalyzer and blood tests. This advice is specific to pilots.

Failing to get a BAC alcohol level recorded will cost you your medical certificate.

Even if pleading guilty to the DUI, get a blood alcohol test.

14 C.F.R. § 61.15(e), which mandates that all Pilots, Flight Instructors, and Ground Instructors certified under FAR Part 61 to report any Motor Vehicle Action (MVA) related to drugs or alcohol to the FAA in writing within 60 calendar days.

The 60-day period begins when your driver’s license is revoked.

What is a roadside suspension?

Can I wait until after my court case to file the 60-day report? (No)

Considerations for Light Sport, BasicMed, and Class III medical.

Reporting on your next (and all future medical applications).

SMAC191 When To Declare Minimum Fuel and When To Declare An Emergency01 Dec 201800:59:48

Cruise Flight/When To Declare Minimum Fuel and When To Declare An Emergency:

Listener mail:

Hi Carl.

I just stumbled upon your site. Very nice! A lot of good information. Thanks for posting it.

I do want to call your attention to an issue in your article titled “Should I Declare Minimum Fuel If I Have An Alternate?”

Should I Declare Minimum Fuel If I Have An Alternate?

In that article, you state “The wonderful aspect when declaring minimum fuel is that it is an advisory to ATC and requires no paperwork.” This seems to imply that if you declare an emergency you have to submit “paperwork.”

In fact, since at least the 70’s, it is rare that you’ll have any contact at all with the FAA post-flight after declaring an emergency, and it is exceedingly rare that any “paperwork” will be involved. I feel it is very important to ensure that pilots know this so they do not hesitate to declare an emergency if they need assistance. Avianca flight 52 is an example of what can happen if pilots are hesitant to declare an emergency.

So it’s great to get the word out about the “minimum fuel” declaration, but not so great to portray it as a way to avoid declaring an emergency if an emergency exists.

My $0.02, and worth about that much!
ATP/CFI

  • When you should declare minimum fuel.
  • MINIMUM FUEL− Indicates that an aircraft’s fuel supply has reached a state where, upon reaching the destination, it can accept little or no delay. This is not an emergency situation but merely indicates an emergency situation is possible should any undue delay occur.
  • When you should declare emergency fuel.
  • EMERGENCY− A distress or an urgency condition.
  • URGENCY− A condition of being concerned about safety and of requiring timely but not immediate assistance; a potential distress condition.
  • DISTRESS− A condition of being threatened by serious and/or imminent danger and of requiring immediate assistance.
  • General advice on declaring an emergency.
  • Chapter 6 of the AIM Emergency Procedures
  • Request assistance immediately
  • Don’t Hint and Hope
  • Use the transponder
  • MAYDAY− The international radiotelephony distress signal. When repeated three times, it indicates imminent and grave danger and that immediate assistance is requested.
  • ATC assistance
  • After You land think about the ELT.
  • Maybe invest in a PLB.
  • Survive by being discovered easily.

SMAC187 Is Your Airport Aviation Friendly?01 Oct 201800:54:57

Is Your Airport Aviation Friendly? As many of you know we recently moved to Lakeland, Florida. The move has been a tremendous boost to our business and to this podcast. We really love being in Lakeland and close to the many aviation venues and events in Central Florida.

Since I am between airplanes I decided to try and find somewhere local where I can hang out, rent planes, join a flying club or simply hanger fly. The logical place to start is the airport with a runway only a 2 miles from my house. Walking out my front door, I looked skyward as the drone of an airplane became louder then flew by towards my destination for the day. This is when I got excited.

Memories danced through my head of my childhood local airport. Perched next to the runway, my fingers entwined in the chain linked fence, I looked in awe of at the flying machines. Similar to this day at the airport my fingers clenched the chain link fence, but in a disappointed and somewhat desperate grip. I had discovered I moved next to an airport that was not what I envisioned as a general aviation friendly airport.

Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I should have done more research. Maybe I needed to find a new friendlier Airport. But that led me to thinking about my dilemma and I thought I would ask our co hosts and you if I am being too tough on my local airport. Also what is a general aviation airport?

SMAC186 Teaching Skills or Creating Aviators15 Sep 201801:05:00

Teaching Skills or Creating Aviators? While reading an aviation magazine I read a statement from the editor that “Flight training is great for teaching skills, but it’s terrible for making pilots”. This started a thought process in my head and made me realize that in many cases he was correct.

Today we discuss how we can better prepare ourselves for the real world of flying while also accepting the fact your pilot certificate is truly a license to learn. Remember a good pilot is always learning.

SMAC185 The Successful Go Around01 Sep 201801:01:58

We rarely do them and when we do they usually don’t go as planned. Your instructors always told you to be ready for one and be spring loaded to perform one. We hear many accidents and incidents of pilots performing one with no success. What are we talking about? The go around. In this episode we will discuss how you can have a successful go around every time you fly.

Preflight Checklist:

Sponsor: AviationCareersPodcast.com – Scholarships, Career Coaching, and Interview Preparation.

Cruise Flight:

Our successful and not so successful go-arounds.

What is a successful go-around?

Why go around?

Situations such as air traffic control (ATC) requirements

  • unexpected appearance of hazards on the runway
  • overtaking another airplane
  • wind shear
  • wake turbulence
  • mechanical failure
  • unstable approach

How to make all your go arounds successful.

  • Decide early
  • Unstabilized approach
  • Power and Pitch up.
  • Don’t point at the ground.
  • Assure airspeed is going up and altitude is not going down.
  • Know your airplane. Most planes pitch up but some pitch down when applying power.

Go arounds are a normal maneuver not an emergency.

Why we don’t go around when we should

  • Mission driven
  • We feel it will reflect negatively upon us as pilots
  • Get-there-itis
  • Pressure from passengers
  • Plane needs to be back at the FBO soon

  • How did BasicMed change the definition of who could be Safety Pilot?
  • Should the Safety Pilot be willing to pay his pro-rata share for aircraft rental?

The topic is one that is both easy to understand and easy to misunderstand. And sometimes there is lots of misinformation being repeated on the interwebz.

Which is why I think a discussion with your podcast crew would be a good topic.
