The Diabetes - Bone Health Connection You Can’t Ignore06 Nov 202500:46:02

What if your blood sugar was secretly affecting your bone strength? In this episode of the Stronger Bones Lifestyle Podcast, I sit down with Ben Tzeel, a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and strength coach who’s been living with type 1 diabetes for over two decades.

We dive deep into how blood sugar balance, inflammation, and strength training intersect to influence bone health, muscle development, and longevity. Whether you’re managing diabetes, prediabetes, or simply want to feel stronger and more balanced, this episode will change the way you think about your metabolism — and your bones.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • The surprising ways insulin resistance and inflammation contribute to bone loss
  • How strength training improves blood sugar balance and boosts bone density
  • Why slow, controlled movements can be safer — and more effective — than lifting heavy too soon
  • The importance of hydration, protein, and proper recovery in maintaining strong muscles and bones
  • How to interpret blood sugar trends and use them to guide your fitness and nutrition choices

Action Steps

  1. Lift smart, not just heavy. Focus on form, control, and consistency — 3 seconds up, 3 seconds down.

  2. Prioritize protein. Include quality protein in every meal to support bone and muscle repair.

  3. Hydrate daily. Water keeps tissues flexible and supports blood sugar balance.

  4. Move often. Daily walking, yoga, or resistance training keeps joints and bones active.

  5. Monitor your stress. Elevated cortisol weakens bones — prioritize rest and recovery.

Debi’s Takeaway

Your bones and metabolism are more connected than you think.

When you fuel your body, move mindfully, and manage stress, you’re not just preventing fractures — you’re building a stronger foundation for your entire life.

Your body is always listening. Treat it with care, consistency, and compassion — and it will reward you with strength and stability from the inside out.

Healing from the Inside Out: Understanding Long COVID, Fatigue, and the Hidden Links to Bone Health30 Oct 202500:45:29

In this episode, Debi Robinson talks with Dr. Jenny Tufenkian, a naturopathic doctor specializing in long COVID, chronic fatigue, and environmental medicine. Together, they explore the deep connections between energy depletion, inflammation, and bone loss — and how true healing begins from within.

Dr. Jenny explains how post-viral illness and stress can disrupt your body’s terrain — the internal environment that determines how well you absorb nutrients, manage inflammation, and rebuild your bones. You’ll learn why fatigue isn’t just about energy; it’s a message from your body that something deeper needs attention.

If you’ve been struggling with exhaustion, brain fog, or unexplained bone loss, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and tools to help you recover your vitality and strength naturally.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • The connection between long COVID, chronic fatigue, and bone health
  • How inflammation and acidity weaken your body’s terrain and bone-building capacity
  • Why stress hormones like cortisol can dissolve bone tissue
  • The importance of detoxification and restoring energy flow
  • How to rebuild your body’s foundation using naturopathic and lifestyle tools

Action Steps

  1. Listen to your body. Fatigue is a signal that your system is out of balance, not just a lack of willpower.

  2. Support detox pathways. Focus on hydration, fiber-rich foods, and gentle movement to support the liver and lymphatic system.

  3. Reduce inflammation. Choose anti-inflammatory foods, manage stress, and prioritize quality sleep.

  4. Rebuild from within. Consider working with a holistic or functional practitioner to address underlying causes like gut health and adrenal fatigue.

  5. Stay patient. Healing deep imbalances takes time—start where you are, and be consistent with self-care practices.

Debi’s Takeaway

Your energy is your body’s currency — and when you’re constantly spending it on stress, inflammation, or recovery from illness, there’s little left for building strong bones. Healing starts when you support your body’s terrain — your gut, your detox systems, your emotional balance — so your bones can thrive again.

Is the healthcare system really working for you — or against you?

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Jeff Gross to explore why our current healthcare model is broken and what that means for women navigating osteoporosis, bone loss, and healthy aging.

Too often, patients are handed a prescription with little explanation, pressured into bone drugs, and given fear-based warnings instead of root-cause solutions. Dr. Gross pulls back the curtain on how Big Pharma, insurance companies, and outdated training created a system that prioritizes pills over prevention.

We also talk about how functional medicine offers a more empowering path—focusing on lifestyle, nutrition, stress management, and individualized care that actually supports long-term bone health.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • Why the U.S. healthcare system is “broken” for both patients and doctors
  • How “evidence-based medicine” often means “evidence-biased”
  • The pressure women face to take bone drugs like bisphosphonates and Prolia
  • How the economics of insurance shape your doctor’s recommendations
  • Why functional medicine and prevention-based care are key to bone strength
  • Practical steps to advocate for yourself and your health

Action Steps:

  • Ask deeper questions before agreeing to medication
  • Invest in prevention: exercise, stress management, nutrient-rich food

  • Reconsider your insurance model for more personalized care
  • Stay informed so you can make confident, empowered decisions

Debi’s Takeaway:

The system may be broken, but you are not powerless. You can choose prevention, question prescriptions, and seek out providers who see you as a partner in your health — not just a diagnosis.

Lymphatic Health – The Missing Link in Bone and Whole-Body Wellness with Kelly Kennedy14 Aug 202500:56:56

Could your lymphatic system be the hidden factor behind your inflammation, fatigue, and even bone loss?

In this eye-opening conversation, I sit down with Kelly Kennedy, lymphatic health educator and founder of the Flowpresso™ therapy method, to explore the critical role your lymph system plays in detoxification, immunity, and tissue repair — including your bones.

Kelly shares how the lymphatic system works, what signs indicate stagnation, and practical ways to restore healthy lymph flow so your body can heal more efficiently. If you’ve been doing “all the right things” for your bone health but still feel stuck, this might be the missing piece.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The lymphatic system’s role in detoxification, immunity, and tissue repair

  • How poor lymph flow fuels inflammation and bone breakdown

  • Common signs your lymph system is congested

  • Why lymphatic health impacts the gut-bone connection

  • At-home practices to improve lymph circulation

  • How Flowpresso™ therapy supports whole-body healing

  • Why bone health requires more than just diet, exercise, and supplements

Action Steps:

  • Move daily: walking, rebounding, or stretching to stimulate lymph flow

  • Practice diaphragmatic breathing to pump lymph naturally

  • Stay hydrated to keep lymph fluid moving freely

  • Try dry brushing toward the heart to stimulate lymph vessels

  • Alternate hot and cold showers to boost circulation

  • Consider professional lymphatic therapy like Flowpresso™

Debi’s Takeaway:

Your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like your heart — it depends on your movement, breath, and hydration to work well. Supporting lymph flow is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to reduce inflammation, improve bone health, and boost overall vitality.

"When we’re exposed to stress as humans, which is normal by the way, we are not trying to have zero stress, we’re just needing to understand how the stress we’re exposed to affects our stress hormone levels. We want our stress hormones to respond in the moment to protect us. If the alarm goes off, we want our adrenaline and cortisol to help protect us or help us go into action of what needs to happen. So that’s not the problem, we want a healthy stress response. The problem is when we get stuck in stress mode." [11:39] - Dr. Doni

It’s part of the energy of breast cancer, as a homeopath there are diseases that have certain energies to them, and the energy of breast cancer and that philosophy is called a miasm in homeopathic medicine. The energy of breast cancer is 'rush, rush, rush, do, do, do, I have to do this, I have to do that", you’re always on the go, you’re always pushing yourself, you’re making lists. And you tend to be a bit of a perfectionist which keeps you from asking for help." [36:25] - Carol Lourie

9: The Power Of Yoga And Strengthening The Weak Side To Defy The Odds Against Scoliosis with Dr. Loren Fishman21 Mar 202301:00:31

Healing scoliosis without surgery seems impossible, but yoga may provide hope to patients suffering under the weight of their diagnosis. Today, we welcome back Dr.Fishman to discuss his yoga routine for scoliosis. His technique is helping patients without surgical intervention. Most cases of scoliosis are characterized as idiopathic, meaning no medical explanation. However, Dr. Fishman believes the cause is simply muscular imbalance.

This simple hypothesis informs his yoga therapy so that he can address the weaker side of his patients. By evening out the muscular capacity, it is possible to reverse scoliosis and prevent dire symptoms from arising. Left untreated, the angle of the curve worsens by 1 degree each year.  Elderly patients with untreated scoliosis can develop curves that obstruct the heart's ability to fill with blood, subsequently depleting the organs of oxygen.

Early intervention is the key to reducing the long-term consequences of scoliosis. Dr. Fishman’s Yoga for scoliosis has the potential to change lives, and help patients live a stronger bones lifestyle!

Key Takeaways:

Memorable Quotes:

“It can so distort your chest, that your heart can’t fill up with blood, so it’s pumping alright, but it’s not pumping as much blood, therefore the other cells of your body, which include your liver, your spleen, and your kidneys, and of course your brain, they don’t get as much blood as they did before, and therefore they don’t get as much oxygen.”  [9:47] -Dr.Fishman

“These muscles are not the dexterous muscles of your fingers, the coordinated muscles of your muscles of your vocal cords. They are not such fine muscles, their strong suit is that they pull, and they endure, they persist. You know, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, your back doesn’t hurt, most of the time, why? Because those muscles are so darn strong and so well created to sustain the pressure that they do so.”   [32:55] -Dr.Fishman

5: What a Dexa Scan Really Tells You with Dr. Wendy Warner21 Feb 202300:48:26

In this episode of the Stronger Bones Lifestyle Podcast, we discuss what a DEXA scan is actually telling you about you and your bones. Today’s guest, Dr. Wendy Warner, a board-certified functional medicine practitioner and gynecologist. After 14 years of practicing conventional ObGyn care, Dr. Warner founded a collaborative holistic medical practice that provides nutritional counseling, genetic investigation and integrative functional medicine consultations.

Not all scans are created equally because different manufacturers tend to find varying results which call into question the accuracy of all DEXA scans. Dr. Warner also points out that the recommendation to get a DEXA scan every 2 years after menopause puts women at risk of high levels of radiation exposure. With all this in mind, she focuses on bringing you the most effective strategies that you can implement today to naturally support your bone density and metabolism.

Stress management, diet and the appropriate bioidentical hormones can help your bones grow stronger throughout menopause. Dr. Warner details her protocol for helping patients analyze their diet and habits to restructure into a lifestyle that will optimize not just your bone health but your overall well-being because healthy bones come from a healthy mind and body.

4: How Medications Cause Biochemical Dysbiosis with Dr. Mihaela Gruita14 Feb 202301:04:20

Today on the Stronger Bones Lifestyle Podcast, we discuss the biochemical imbalance caused by medications with Dr. Mihaela Gruita. She is a naturopathic pharmacist and with her program The Medicine Cabinet Makeover, Mihaela helps patients understand how their medications are causing deficiencies at the biochemical level. Often the side effects of drugs are worse than the problem they intend to solve.

Digestion is at the root of health but it’s not about what you eat, it’s about what you are actually able to digest, absorb and assimilate into your body. Biochemical dysbiosis is at the root of all health problems and poor lifestyle habits is what sparks that imbalance. A healthy  gut means healthy bones and proper absorption of vital amino acids, vitamins and minerals that otherwise will be taken from your own body.

When patients are diagnosed with a disease, it can be tempting to reach for a prescription for a quick fix but allowing fear to rule your decision making leads to further injury to your health. The pharmaceutical industry often omits rare side effects if they are not discovered during trials because of limited test subjects. Understanding every side effect of your medications allows you to make informed decisions about your health so you can find long term solutions that address the root cause. In this episode, Mahaela uncovers the downstream effects of popular medications and arms you with the knowledge to confidently speak to your doctor about reexamining your prescriptions.

Key Takeaways:

[2:30] Osteoporosis can be a side effect using acid reflux medications for too long

[5:20] PPI’s stop digestive enzyme that digest proteins into amino acid, needed to build bones

[6:00] If you’re nutrient deficient, your body will dissolve your bones to use as a mineral source

[18:30] Calcium without magnesium will precipitate and it absorbs into the soft tissue

[20:30] Vitamin-D is essential to absorb calcium and Vitamin-K distributes it into the bones

[24:30] Dairy is highly inflammatory and is not a good source of calcium for bone health

[40:10] Osteoporosis medications usually don’t prevent fractures and have terrible side effects

[48:20] Not enough doctors are doing post marketing reports on the side effects in their patients

[50:00] In studies with only 3000 people, rare side effects usually won’t be captured in the study

[55:00] On average patients are usually taking 3 different medications to treat one issue

A diagnosis of osteoporosis does not determine the destiny of you or your bones. Today’s guest is Dr. Loren Fishman, medical director of the Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center and author of Yoga for Osteoporosis. Modern medicine can improve the outer layer of bones but often lack the ability to strengthen the core that ultimately supports well-rounded bone health. Dr. Fishman has used Yoga as a treatment for women who have reversed bone loss without medication or nutritional intervention.

Dr. Fishman has an ongoing study, 12 Poses vs. Osteoporosis which has proven an increase in bone density. However, the benefits of Yoga go beyond bone health. Studies have proven that Yoga effectively strengthens vascular flexibility, preserves cognitive function, and aids in longevity.  If you are wanting to learn more about the benefits of Yoga, this is the episode for you.

Key Takeaways:

12 Poses vs Osteoporosis

Yoga for Osteoporosis

Memorable Quotes:

“With the bisphosphonates, the outside of the bone does get better, the cortex it’s called, the periphery, the part that measures the bone mineral density but the inside part gets weaker! So 30-70% of the strength of the bone is donated by something that's getting weaker on the medicines.”   [13:15] - Dr.Fishman

“To me there is nothing in this world like yoga for osteoporosis, for bone health, for joint health because we load the joints from so many different angles and then we create that compressive and tensile force necessary to pull and push on the bones, to demand more every single day, which is what creates that stimulation for the bones to remodel.”  [16:15] -Debi Robinson

2: Rebuilding Stronger Bones with Debi Robinson31 Jan 202300:18:45

Welcome to the Stronger Bones Lifestyle Podcast. I am your host, Debi Robinson. I created this podcast to inspire women to reclaim their bone health because osteoporosis is not a life sentence and should not limit your quality of life.

After my own hip joint surgery caused my hip to collapse, I felt fragile. That feeling of fragility kept me from doing physical activities that I loved, leading me to settle into a sedentary lifestyle that worsened my bone density and strength. Once I discovered that I was more than my DEXA scan scores, I ventured into functional medicine and began my journey to rebuild my bones!

Bone remodeling is a response to the demands placed on your bones every day. If you have a diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia, it can be reversed. Bone remodeling is a metabolic process that you have control over. Don’t think of your DEXA score as the end instead, it is an insight into the changes you need to make. In this show and episode to come, I will teach you how you can rebuild your bone density and break free from the mindset that you are fragile.

Memorable Quotes:
“When you get this diagnosis and you are told that they are fragile or you feel that word fragile, that happens in the layer of the mind and once you have that feeling; you’re more likely to move less, and if you move less. If you don’t use it, you lose it because bone remodeling happens according to the demands that are placed on the bones every day all day.”  [4:40]

“Posture plays a huge role in the health of your thoracic spine because of the compressive force… it is the proper alignment that will create the exact load necessary to constantly create that stimulation for your bones to be strong.”   [13:05]

1: My Journey to Stronger Bones with Debi Robinson31 Jan 202300:30:03

Today, I am sharing why I am so dedicated to helping women understand the root cause of their bone loss. Many women think their diagnosis is the end but wIth the right diet, sleep, and exercise, it is possible to stop, slow down, or even reverse bone loss.

After I was told my hip joint collapsed I felt delicate and weak. I  was afraid of further injuring my hip and consequently stopped exercising which only worsened my condition. By healing my body as a whole and committing to a strengthening yoga routine, I not only regained flexibility but I no longer feel fragile.

I know what broken feels like, which is why I am equipping you with the tools to strengthen your bones or hopefully avoid bone loss altogether. Bone remodeling is a metabolic process which is why your diet, exercise, and lifestyle heavily influence the health of your bones. With simple lifestyle changes you can heal your gut and invigorate your bones again. I created this podcast to educate and inspire you because there is hope for a stronger, healthier, and more flexible tomorrow.

Key Takeaways:

[1:35] Until you experience bone loss, you take for granted that your bones are your foundation

[2:40] I treated my chronic pain with excessive advil use not knowing that it was harming my gut

[3:40] An osteoporosis diagnosis makes you feel too fragile to move and you become inactive

[7:50] The importance of safety when taking on a yogic practice to avoid further injuries

[10:30] Understanding the effect of diet, sleep, and lifestyle on your bone health

[12:20] Your bone tissue begins breaking down as early as your 30’s

[13:10] A diagnosis is not  the end because you can stop, slow down or even reverse bone loss

[15:18] Inflammation, stress, toxicity & inactivity are just a few of the 7 root causes of bone loss

[18:25] There is no single treatment that will improve bone health, it requires a lifestyle change

[21:00] Calcium supplements won't work until you heal your body so it can utilize it effectively\

[24:20] Detox and focus on what needs to heal, your gut, bones, acidity, or your physical body

[25:20] Bones must be in alignment, Incorrect posture is a huge contributing factor to bone loss

Memorable Quotes:

“In order to keep those who I was teaching safe because safety was so key to me because  I knew what broken felt like and I knew how broken affects your life. So practicing and keeping our bodies strong and mobile and at the same time doing it in the safest manner possible is the real key for me.”  [7:55]

“When you are practicing something like yoga or anything where you’re going to be stretching muscles and joints and putting pressure on them, that you do it safely. Because there is one side where we do strengthening and that’s great but there is the other side where injuries can happen as well.” [9:50]

“Bone remodeling is really an act of metabolism. The bones are building, dissolving, building, dissolving and what we do all day, every day, either is contributing to building or contributing to dissolving.” [15:45]

The Truth About Bone Loss—And Why You’ve Been Misled24 Jul 202500:28:06

Do you really have osteoporosis — or have you just been compared to a 30-year-old on a machine designed to sell medication?

In this solo episode, I open up about the real story behind bone scans, how osteoporosis became a billion-dollar industry, and what most doctors don’t explain about the medications they prescribe. From the insurance-fueled rise of the DEXA scan to the flawed use of T-scores and the overprescription of drugs like Fosamax and Reclast, this episode is here to help you question the diagnosis, challenge the standard approach, and step into your power as a strong, informed woman.

If you’ve ever felt confused, scared, or pressured by a bone scan or diagnosis—this is the episode you need to hear.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The shocking backstory behind how osteoporosis diagnoses exploded after 1997
  • Why comparing your bones to a 30-year-old’s is misleading (and unnecessary)
  • How medications like bisphosphonates work—and why they don’t actually build bone
  • What the drug companies don’t mention about long-term use and rebound fractures
  • The role of inflammation and metabolism in true bone loss
  • Why bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) may be safer and more effective than we’ve been led to believe
  • How to naturally support your bones with nutrition, yoga, and stress reduction
  • Why DEXA is just one data point—and not the full picture of your health

Action Steps:

  • Stop thinking your T-score defines your future
  • Ask your doctor about TBS (Trabecular Bone Score) or REMS scans
  • Focus on lifestyle factors that reduce inflammation and promote bone remodeling
  • Join the Stronger Bones Lifestyle community and get the support you deserve

Why REMS Is Replacing DEXA for Bone Health with Dr. Andy Bush17 Jul 202500:30:54

Could everything you’ve been told about bone scans be outdated?

In this game-changing episode, I welcome back Dr. Andy Bush, orthopedic surgeon and bone health innovator, to explore a revolutionary new technology: REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry).

Unlike the traditional DEXA scan that only measures bone density, REMS analyzes bone strength, structure, and real fracture risk. Together, we break down what REMS actually does, why it matters, and how it’s reshaping the future of osteoporosis diagnosis and prevention—especially for women who want to avoid unnecessary medications and take charge of their health.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why T-scores and DEXA scans are incomplete—and sometimes misleading
  • How REMS technology uses sound waves to assess true bone strength
  • What a Fragility Score is and how it can predict fracture risk more accurately
  • Why orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Bush are leading the shift to structural bone assessments
  • The importance of viewing bones through a mechanical AND biological lens
  • How muscle loss (sarcopenia) and bone loss are linked—and what you can do about it
  • Why women deserve more than a “diagnosis and a drug” when it comes to bone health

Debi’s Takeaway:
Your bones are more than a number. What we need is not just more medication, but better diagnostics and stronger education. REMS is offering both — and giving women the power to understand their real risk and make informed decisions.

About Dr. Andy Bush:

Dr. Andy Bush is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon based in North Carolina. After 30+ years of surgically repairing fractures, he now leads a prevention-focused bone clinic using REMS technology to assess and improve structural bone health—without radiation or outdated density-based models.

Does Your T-Score Really Matter? Rethinking Bone Health with Dr. Andy Bush10 Jul 202500:35:51

Is a single number determining your treatment plan? For many women, the T-score from a DEXA scan becomes the full story of their bone health. But what if that story is incomplete—or even misleading?

In this episode, I sit down with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andy Bush, who has shifted his focus from fixing fractures to preventing them. Together, we dive into the flaws of the traditional DEXA scan, why your T-score might not reflect your actual fracture risk, and the power of a better diagnostic: REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry).

If you’ve ever been told you have osteoporosis — or felt confused and fearful about your scan results—this is the episode for you.

🔑 What You’ll Learn:

  • Why T-scores alone are not reliable predictors of fracture risk

  • What the DEXA scan actually measures (and why it’s incomplete)

  • How REMS technology assesses bone strength and quality

  • The difference between density and structure in bone health

  • Why 50% of fractures happen in women without osteoporosis

  • What a fragility score tells you that a T-score doesn’t

  • What to ask your doctor if you’re getting a DEXA scan

  • The role of TBS (Trabecular Bone Score) and how it adds context

👤 About Dr. Andy Bush:

Dr. Andy Bush is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon based in North Carolina who transitioned his practice from surgical fracture treatment to preventative bone health care. He is a pioneer in the use of REMS scanning in the U.S. and specializes in assessing structural bone strength and fragility risk in women.
